Football wouldn’t be football if people involved in running football teams weren’t telling something other than the truth.

It happened in Cleveland on Thursday, when according to Adam Schefter of ESPN the Browns told quarterback Colt McCoy they wouldn’t draft a quarterback in round one.

The Browns picked Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden with the 22nd overall selection.

Though the Browns had to do whatever they thought they should do to make the team better, why say anything to McCoy about their plans? Even if he was demanding an answer, there had to be a way to defuse the situation without lying to the guy.

While they may not care about what McCoy thinks if he’s now going to be displaced (and possibly traded or cut), there are other guys in the locker room who may now be less inclined to trust the coaching staff and/or the front office.

I can understand telling him that.. no way would they want it out that they were looking at Weeden late in the 1st if they really wanted to get him (especially if they were planning on trading back into the first to get him)

It's possible that when the day started they weren't planning on taking Weeden in the 1st, it's just that something happened, or they heard something, that made them change their mind.

Maybe they were targeting Wright and when he went to Tenn it threw our board off. Or maybe they heard someone was moving ahead of 37 to take Weeden and we didn't want to lose him.

No comment like that should be seen as a promise or guarantee. It happens.

How in the hell does Adam Schefter know what the FO did or did not tell McCoy? Sounds like a load of BS to me.

It seems like their plan was to take Wright at #22, then trade back into the first round and take Weeden.

According to "reports", we wanted Kendall Wright at 22. But the Titans took him at 20. link I think Weeden was likely the next guy on our board.

Think about it. If Wright is there at 22, we take him and hope that Weeden is there at 37, which is where a lot of people projected him.

So, we just stuck with our draft board (totally my guess, but makes sense, IMO).

That makes sense.

How dare you, sir! This is a message board, and that kind of act doesn't fly around here.

then our board is seriously flawed, the first three picks could have netted us a RB, WR and Tackle. giving colt enough talent to actually measure what he can do.

We know what Colt can do, and it isn't good.

Sorry, but he is a seriously an deeply flawed QB. You might not like it, but McCoy will almost certainly never be a starter ever again.

What bothers me is, if colt is so bad, why in the hell did we replace him with a guy that mostly couldn't get it done without Blackmon....and there is NO Blackmon here.

The other thing on this Ytown, I have a feeling we could have drafted Daffy Duck if it meant Colt McCoy wasn't our QB anymore and you'd be happy.

Justin Blackmon :

2009 : 20 receptions, 260 yards, 2 TD's
2010 : 111 receptions, 1782 yards, 20 TD's
2011 : 121 receptions, 1522 yards, 18 TD's

What changed between 2009 and 2010?

Brandon Weeden.

Blackmon was a 3-star coming out of high school and his only offers were Oklahoma State, Colorado, Missouri and Northern Iowa.

Maybe Blackmon can't do it without Weeden.

FWIW...About 20 minutes ago, the FAN radio was reporting that after talking with either Heckert or Shurmur, the reports about McCoy being shopped are not true.

Well the 2nd and 3rd rounds didn't exactly support that theory.

Seems about as likely as 'Colt guns down the Steelers'

Man, what a risk of a pick.

Even when I think we've tanked a draft, I give the benefit and wait to see.. I even did so with Mangini... but Weeden at 22?

Failure written all over it.

I disagree.

We'll see who's right later this year.

What on Earth do you see in the guy to merit a pick at 22, besides merely replacing McCoy?

He's 28 years old and is far from a sure thing. A liability more than a sure thing, actually.

I get that you have an obsession with replacing McCoy ... but this move is almost dumber than selling the farm for RG3. I'd almost rather have made that blunder... at least there's more upside there.

Better arm.

Better accuracy.

Better size.

He can hit a receiver in stride, and knows how to throw a receiver open.

And he is .... wow ..... 3 years older than McCoy. OMG .... send him to the nursing home.

Better arm, size and accuracy than McCoy? What does that even mean? McCoy is a bum. A good third round pick should be 2 or 3 of 3 on that one.

If those 3 things give you so much hope, than why not Tannehill (who you deplored) or even Osweiler? (who would've hit 2 of 3, which, according to Meatloaf, ain't bad)

Ask yourself --- is Weeden that great at 22, or do you just want McCoy gone? If it's the former, expand on it, without using '> than McCoy'.

I felt that Weeden was the 3rd best QB in this draft, and a clear upgrade for us.

I would have loved to have Luck or RG3, obviously, but I think that it is almost impossible to evaluate our OL or WR when we have a horribly ineffective QB.

I do not think that Tannehill will ever be able to put it all together at the pro level. I also do not believe that Osweiler will be able to do so. I do think that Weeden has a chance.

That chance is our best opportunity in this draft to upgrade a position of need .... and in fact, the position I felt was our most dire need coming into this draft.

I did not like Tannehill's accuracy, nor did I care for the fact that he crumbled under pressure despite being sacked only something like 8 times last year. His accuracy was over-inflated by a lot of short, shorter, and shortest passes. I also don't trust a guy who has so few starts in college. Cam Newton had fewer ..... but he is a major exception.

Osweiler got worse last year in some ways, and really doesn't do a whole lot very well. he can ge on a roll and do well .... but he can just as easily start throwing the ball right at defenders. He struggles reading defenses, has a long, long release, and I don't really like much about him as a QB.

I think that Weeden is the best option behind the "big 2". I feel that he has enough positives to be a plus NFL starter, and now it is up to him to put it all together. I feel that he will be a significant upgrade at the QB spot from day 1 of next season.
