I agree that the only QB that would split the locker room is Wallace. This signing should mark the end of Wallace on this team. I think keeping McCoy on as a backup would be smart.

jc...

I have made this point before...every season brings injury risk and a need for depth at every position on a football team.

Concerning the QB position, who gives the team the best chance to win, should the starting QB go down with injury?

If we are talking about ability to perform on the field, I would give the nod to Wallace over McCoy.

If we are talking about mentoring young QBs, McCoy appears to have a level head and a great team player, but he has no experience in the NFL as a mentor.

On the other hand, we have Wallace who has openly commented he is not in Cleveland to be a backup. In Jan. 2012, Wallace said, "All I want is a legit opportunity. That's all you can ask for at the end of the day." ...
web page

Wallace sat behind McCoy until he was injured and now that the Browns have drafted another QB, who happens to be 28 years old. Wallace is in his 10th season and if he is going to ever start in the NFL, he needs to get the opportunity soon.

I'm not sure how the Browns will handle this situation, but as we found out again last season, the Browns need to have at least 2 QBs capable of running this offense.

I don't think they honestly planned on taking Weeden in the 1st Round. I recall the F.O. claiming that they didn't want to "run the risk" and allow Weeden to fall to them at #37, so they decided to take him with the #22 pick.

I agree. I think they had a short target list at #22 and Wright was the last guy on that list available and when he was gone it made the pick of Weeden possible... I also think they knew that they had Schwartz graded higher than most and that even if a couple OTs were gone by 37, he would still be there... and even if he was gone, a decent OT would be available...

Doesn't deserve its own thread - the media shouldn't use other media members as sources, IMO - but for what its worth ...

Report: Brad McCoy’s comments sealed Colt’s fate in Cleveland

Profootballtalk.com

by Mike Florio on May 3, 2012

AP - After Browns quarterback Colt McCoy suffered an obvious (to everyone but the Browns) concussion during a Thursday night game against the Steelers in December 2011, McCoy’s father, Brad, called out the Browns for failing to keep Colt out of the game.

At the time, I feared the Browns would hold those comments against Colt. According to Tony Grossi of ESPNCleveland.com, they have.

Grossi reports that “McCoy’s fate as a former starter was sealed” when Brad McCoy sounded off.

It’s not a surprise. Football coaches at every level generally prefer that parents butt out. Given the fairly legendary temper of Browns president Mike Holmgren and the high degree of sensitivity that the Browns exhibited regarding the question of whether Colt McCoy should have re-entered the game, Brad McCoy’s words undoubtedly triggered a stream of four-letter words at Browns headquarters in Berea.

it didn't even really deserve to be written.. If H&H drafted a QB, changed their draft strategy, and removed the starting QB based on something this father said, then they should go back to coaching peewee where that kind of stuff belongs.

I don't look at it necessarily like that ... but more of like it being the final straw.

If McCoy had set the world on fire, then it would be easier to overlook comments made by his father ....... however when considered as part of the total, overall package ..... it made it just that much harder to consider McCoy as a viable possibility as a starter.

I'm with you Daman, I think Grossi is just trying to stir the pot. IMO it is pretty far fetched that a professional team would do something so childish. Maybe he's trying to stir up some hate against H&H, and trying to get a little attention for himself.

I can't friggin' stand Grossi. I can't believe he got a second crack at the Browns beat ANYWHERE in Cleveland.

And I can't stand Mike Florio who seems to lap it all up as fast as Grossi can make it up . . .

He does appear to have some grudge against team managment and ownership. I'm not exactly sure why that is,, but his tweet showed his true colors and now anything he says is suspect.

If the Browns trade or cut McCoy, his father will not be a reason. If they cut him, it's because they don't think he fits on the team for whatever reason, Not because his father opened his trap about a concussion.

Colt has been a stand up guy., mouth shut, head in the books, works at his craft. Hate his ability if you want, but you can't hate the kid. If the Browns think he can be of any help at all, he's here for at least his first contract..

Grossi is an idiot for even saying anything like that...

Totally agree. Colt has been the perfect team-first person. If his physical abilities limit his ceiling that is hardly his fault - he's a hard worker and has done all he could with what God gave him. Those that berate and insult him at any opportunity show more about themselves than Colt.

Colt is the kind of guy we would all root for and is the kind of kid you'd be proud of. He will be a great backup and who knows - watching may do him a lot of good in the long run.

Saying that, I'm stoked to see what Weeden can do. I hope Colt stays, he is what the Browns should be about - hard work, class and toughness.

That's how i feel about it - the kid is a hard worker but I'm not sure physically can be a star QB..... I'm fine with keeping him as a back-up and maybe he'll have a career as a coach or something? Who knows... but obviously (unless weeden comes in and total bombs training camp) this team has moved on from the McCoy era.

May Kay called Colt's dad and asked him the questions and he answered them honestly based on what he saw and what he knew.. What is the difference between Colt's dad answering the question or Trent Dilfer talking about later or Mac Brown commenting on it or LeBron James tweeting on it? Fact is that his dad was right, anybody watching on TV could tell that Colt wasn't all there after the hit.. everybody except those responsible for his health at that moment who were 100 feet away and able to talk with him. If she would have called me, I would have given her the same answer... He looked out of it, you could tell he was woozy... why he was still in the game was stupid.

I'm with ya on this...

The question I have is, "Why is what Colt's Dad said the story everyones talking about, and not what the Browns risked by putting Colt back in the game?"

Is this to deflect criticism, by blaming the messenger or maybe even protecting the Browns from another major lawsuit...didn't Joe Jurevicius win a lawsuit against the Brows for bad medical treatment?

I am not in PR, so I can't say if the Browns should just kill this rumor right away during the next press meet and say "it's not true", or just let it go away?

I don't see how H&H would even think that what Colt's Dad said was out of line, but they may not be able to say it. I am sure they are looking out for the best of each player, but they might want to put in an extra medical opinion option when someone is hit like that.

McCoy already looks like a cherub. I don't think having his dad make comments does much to help take him seriously as a leader. Seems kind of childish.

I miss the days where NFL parents were restricted to selling Chunky soup.

Warning: Can of Worms

I was google searching Holmgren's temper to see if it is a fact and this came up:

Tales from the Green Bay Packers Sideline

Quote:

He would routinely bench a player for fumbling, the one miscue he could not abide and, indeed, even traded one promising running back, Ahman Green, when he was in Seattle because of his penchant for putting the ball on the ground.

Maybe Hillis' fumbilitis angered Holmgren?

Hmmm, how odd. I thought most coaches had no problem with their players fumbling the ball . . .

I'm hearing rumblings of the Saints being interested in Colt. Anybody have a link . . . ?

LOL, chunky soup.

As a parent I do not fault him for being concerned, but I do question his tact, by putting the Browns management in the cross hairs and making them look incompetent/negligent in their duties is not a feather in his Sons hat.

The way I remember it, McCoys father didn't initiate the conversation., he was asked a question, he answered it honestly (we all saw it) and for that, some folks feel he should shut his mouth..

Tell me, if you are asked a question, which choice do you take,, Answer it honestly, Answer it with a lie, or shut up.. and remember, it's your kid your talking about.

Brad McCoy's response to any questions from the media should have been "no comment". His concerns should have been conveyed directly, or through Colt's agent. He did his son no favors by going public. With that said, you would hope and expect that the Browns front office wouldn't hold the son responsible for the father's actions.

I agree that "no comment" would have been the best choice for Mr McCoy, openly. By stating the obvious truth he did not serve to help his son, but he could have let the Browns know that he was concerned in a more tactful way and still satisfied his parental concerns over the matter.
Maybe it will help other parents sons of this team and I'm sure that this instance will be handled differently in the future, but at the end of the day was he helpful or hurtful to Colts case? That's the question that he has to live with.

Concussion Gate, or whatever you want to call it, was a disgusting moment last year. Colt looked bad, the team looked REALLY bad, and Mr. McCoy's comments did not help matters in any capacity.

Colt's gotta be the one who stands up for his personal safety in this instance. Mr. McCoy was just speaking out for the well being, and the frustration against a football team who plainly mishandled his son's health and well being by putting him back in that game.

It shouldn't be held against Colt, he's never once called out the coach or anyone, he's done only what this team has needed him to do. Managment's gaffes and his own father's gaffes shouldn't be held against Colt. He's done everything he can to look like the team player he has always been. Though he doesn't have the 'experience' to be a "mentor" what's to say he would be any better/worse than Seneca Wallace from a standpoint of helping Weeden learn the system? Wallace has experience over the span of his career, sure, but it was Colt out there starting most of the games for us last season. Colt has put in the work, I am sure he would be fine in a backup capacity, helping Weeden learn this offensive system. He only helped the entire team digest it last off-season before the pre-season started. If the guy has the initiative to try and get an entire team on the same page, I am sure he would show the enthusiasm and spirit to help his own fellow QB learn the same system.

I really don't buy that Wallace is a better mentor simply because of his experience.

Well said and as a parent of an athlete I had to learn this same lesson.

Keep my big pie hole shut LOL.

I agree that Colt will be an asset to this team if we chose to keep him in the fold and I hope that we will.
I would like to commend his parents for razing a person of high integrity in Colt McCoy. Job well done Mom and Dad.

LOL, "raze" may end up being what Colt's dad did to his future with the Browns. "Raise", on the other hand, would be what Colt's parents did for him, and I agree they did a good job.

doesn't matter, he was asked a question, he answered it.. and when your kids are involved,, tons of rules go out the window.

In either case, anyone holding anything against Colt because of something his father said is just plain nuts..

I apologize.Had I known you were lurking around I would not have responded.
The level of deep thinking required to grasp the complex concept that a head coach should not talk to the media appears to be beyond your ability to comprehend,so it might have better to not have said it.

The venom floweth like wine around these parts.

I dunno...this entire thing looks like the author has folks on his puppet-strings. I'd encourage everyone to think for themselves and not get hoodwinked by the dope that kicked up the dust on this one. He made a story where there was a non-story...and we're talking about it.

In pro sports, if you rock, you can get away with anything short of murder. If you suck you can't jaywalk without getting released. No team is going to demote a player because his da-da was asked a question and answered in a way that was unfavorable for a team.

McCoy got sat because the organization is ready to move on. Let's not make this out to be more than what it really is.

He wants you to do just that.

As Clint Eastwood famously said in Heartbreak Ridge..."Don't give the #@%*! the satisfaction..."

Actually you brought up a point that I considered, because he was his Coach he really never had to experience his sons game from the other side of the fence and perhaps it was uncharted territory with not having hands on control of the situation as he was accustomed to in the past. I don't know, but it could have been a variable.

It's not an excuse, but it could be a factor here.

It was a PR nightmare for this franchise and though it should not reflect on Colt personally. It certainly was not a feather in his cap either.

With that said I don't think that Big Mike feels any differently about Colt McCoy as a person. He is the Man, but even he has a boss to answer to
