I love that they are playing their hearts out, but I just can't see us keeping this pace up with the roster we have. What are the probabilities that all or most of these things happen:

1. an 80 year old Derek Lowe keeps this up a whole season?
2. Hannahan keeps up his incredible hot bat with RISP
3. Hafner stays healthy.
4. Jimenez and Masterson iron out their shaky starts
5. Chris Perez holds it together.
6. Kotchman starts hitting consistently.
7. Any three of Brantley, Damon, Duncan, Choo, or Cunninham start hitting.

Those things have to happen if we're to contend in this division. I think its asking too much. Too many things have to fall into place. I mean, we literally don't have one outfielder batting above .236! Our five outfielders COMBINED have 4 HRs. That is atrocious.

If you can't get hitting from the outfield and 1B, you're in trouble. Our two Aces are struggling with consistency. We're getting by on timely hitting from unlikely guys and pitching that is barely hanging on and relying heavily on defense. I want to be optimistic, but what about this team is any better than last year's team?

If Choo returns to form, if Masterson returns to form, if Sizemore gets healthy and returns to form, If Hafner stays healthy, if Cabrera stays hot, if Kipnis stays hot, if Brantley returns to last year's form, if Damon or Duncan suddenly turn back time, or if LaPorta and Chisenhall make a huge leap from the minors...

Too many ifs. How many guys on this team would start for the Yankees, Rays, Texans, or Tigers? Cabrera, Santana, Kipnis, maybe Pronk...and that's it.

Not a Reds fan, but I picked up Cueto in a trade in the offseason of my dynasty league, got him very cheap for the numbers he puts up, not sure why he doesnt get more run.

ah, 1 bad game means to ignore the other 29 games.

look, noone expects this team to be world-beaters. it's going to be a tough season and we need help from the Tigers not running away (which they are obliging so far).

but, it's baseball, there's always a chance for crazy things to happen and you can't list all of the negative if's, ignore all the positive if's and call it a day.

Today is May 10, 2012 and the Indians have a 2 game lead in the AL Central. Enjoy it.

I don't think I'm ignoring the 29 other games. I'm basing my comments on all 30 games. I'd feel the same if we had won yesterday 8-1 instead of losing 8-1.

If the playoffs started today, i'd enjoy it. I enjoy the wins. But a two game lead on May 10 means squat. I guess its a moral victory?

Look, I enjoyed the games last year. It was fun winning. But I want to watch the team win the world series. This team isn't going to do that. So why do I have to ignore that?

how do you know so definitively that this team won't win the world series? once you make the playoffs you never know what might happen.

i'm just looking at LAA, Detroit, Boston, Philly, SF, Milwaukee, Arizona and heck, even NYY (because of their division). all those teams are .500 or worse (except NYY). all were expected to be contenders for their divisions and/or WS this year. I would guess maybe 2 or 3 recover and make the playoffs, but a majority of them will not.

the games count just as much early as they do late. we are 1/5 of the way there which means we still have 4/5 left. but, we have managed to hang in 1st despite our top2 pitchers pitching poorly, hitting ridiculously terribly with the bases loaded, being bad in extra innings, getting next to nothing out of several of our hitters (20th ranked SLG%, Choo not rebounding, Brantley not improving, Kotchman, etc.), and our bullpen not being the strength it was for much of last year.

so yes, alot has gone right so far this year (schedule certainly helped), but alot has gone wrong too. we were unlucky with injuries last year, so hopefully we get by a bit better on that front this year. we'll see.

for now, enjoy

No, all it means is that its a heck of a lot better than being 6 games out.

Obviously that's the goal and maybe this team isn't ready for that yet... but if that is the only reason you want to watch, then wait until September, check the standings and if the Tribe isn't in the playoffs, then you won't have to worry about it.

I LOVE a good "standing boo" at Fenway

Beckett chased, 7-1 Tribe, top 3

gotta admit, Derek Lowe has been a good pick up so far. I'm impressed.

Becket gonna get all kinds of crap for golfing now that he imploded so badly. Always nice to get a pitcher off his first start back from injury.

Better then I expected, that's for sure.

I thought he would add the most as a clubhouse guy, showing the kids the ropes. Turns out he's been one of our most consistent players.

Not sure, I picked it up in the 3rd, and they were well on they're way to running Beckett out of town by then.

if you take a look at Lowe the past 3-4 years on GB%, xFIP, and other peripherals, he has been pretty consistent. he caught some bad breaks last year and his stats looked worse than he really pitched, so we get a $10mil discount on him

I like Lowe and said it was a good pick-up back when we did....back when everybody was laughing and cussing at the pick up.

I watch at least parts of nearly every Braves game played since that is the "local" team and they are always on. As you mention, his numbers were always pretty solid. Another factor is it seemed the way the schedule fell, Lowe was always pitted against the other teams #1. It just seemed Tommy Hansen was never on the mound against Clayton Kershaw or some other top pitcher. You always found Derrick Lowe who would put in his 7 decent innings, allowing 3 runs while his team would manage to support him with one run, and he would lose.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

So.....it's probably about time to start hammering out that long term deal with Kipnis eh?

Anyone have any insight in to his contract rights? After this year?

I know he's only on a one year deal (through this year) but I wasn't sure what control the Indians may or may not have in regards to free agency. Think it would be advantageous to get ahead of the market with him.

he is not even arbitration eligible until 2015. he cannot become a FA until 2018.

that being said, if he wants to sign a 7 or 8 year deal right now, I'd do it (sew up the first couple years of his FA period in exchange for him having the security of a deal locked up).
