I think it would be fair to consider our guards to be in the bottom half of the league. Excuse their play in any number of ways but in terms of pure production they weren't very good.

The TE's as a unit are subpar as well. Watson is a solid starter, but he's also coming off multiple concussions.

Who is lining up across from Haden? Skrine, who is known only to Browns fans? 33-year old Sheldon Brown who was beaten routinely last year?

And lastly, how many teams in the league would trade their QB's for our QB's? Let's be very honest with ourselves about the position: We have a failed starter who has been permanently benched, a 29-year old unproven rookie, and a 10-year, 5'10 guy. I can, maybe, name 5 teams with a worse QB situation, but even if you can count a few more, is that really any good?

We're still full of draft-day optimism. Once we've taken the nice, bright, shiny new toys out of the packages and start playing with them, we're going to realize how far we have yet to go.

Darn Toad.. You could have as least waited a few weeks before you broke our bubble.

Your right about our status and how far we have to go compared to the better teams, BUT. I see real progress on the horizon this year. I'm more optimistic now than I have been in several years.

We added a few key pieces that should bring hope and some excitement to the team. All I wanted from this draft is the POSSIBILITY of excitement. TR brings it, and I think Weeden is going to surprise all of us. We haven't had any hope at the QB position for such a long time and our offense has been SO bad, I quit even thinking about spending a grand for a road trip up there.

I may be enticed to go this year though, just to witness the excitment and the possibility of watching TR run over someone or Weeden hitting someone in stride and watch them RUN !

I was mostly stating that with the (optimistic) assumption that our first ~3 draft picks would pan out.

Our guards improved drastically from game 1 to game 16 in my evaluation of them.

I think our TEs our decidedly average.

As for our CBs, I believe we absolutely have a top 5 group. Sheldon gets picked on because he is the lesser of the evils.

I think Patterson is our #2 CB this year, and Skrine is the Nickle, Bring in Shledon at 2 if you want to go Dime...

I think that our Guards were close to middle of the league by the end of last season ..... and I suspect that they will improve in their 2nd seasons with a full training camp behind them.

Everyone made such a big deal out of no training camp for one certain position, but our Guards, especially our rookie 5th rounder, had no off-season experience with the WCO, nor did our 2nd year Guard in Lauvoa.

Our receivers also had no experience in the WCO entering training camp.

I think that all of those guys benefit from a full off-season program.

I think that we could wind up seeing a fair amount of Smelley in some 2 TE formations. He's definitely a good blocker, and he's also a heck of a receiver. He could play some H Back type, as a FB swinging out, and as a blocker. I am actually kind of excited about him as well.

I really, really liked this year's draft. I think that we got several players who will be either starters, or major contributors sooner rather than later.

For anyone who's interested, Brandon Weeden will be on the PD's live show at noon tomorrow:

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2012/05/brandon_weeden_joins_pd_sports.html

New Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden will call in as a guest on PD Sports Insider live Thursday at noon on cleveland.com.

Weeden, the 22nd overall pick in the NFL Draft, will talk about joining the Browns, what he brings to the team and answer questions from Mary Kay Cabot, Bud Shaw and Dennis Manoloff for about 10 minutes at the top of the show.

Once again, be sure to watch live at noon at cleveland.com/pdsportsinsider.

BTW, I'm in the boat that thinks we should have done better with the 22nd pick (WR/DeCastro). I'm truly speaking from an unbiased (but hopeful) perspective.

My only thought is, If Weeden busts, we passed up a good oppurtunity to grab a player at a different position that will likely still be a hole later...

This is true for every pick every year in the first 2 rounds. It is not unique to just Weeden.

But the risk of it happening with a guy like Weeden is significantly higher than it is for a guy like DeCastro...

I like our OL. Pinky and Lauvao are coming into their on and developing chemistry with Mack and Joe Thomas. Swartz is the perfect compliment for this big grungy offensive line. I think Richardson is really gonna love these behemoths in front of him. Hopefully Weeden will feel the same way too lol.

My big question is Brandon Weeden when it comes to the offense.

On Defense free safety is the glaring hole. I wonder how this DL will end up shaking itself out. Does Sheard go back over to RDe or do we keep him at LDE? Marcus Benard is the guy we really need to step up as our situational pass rusher.

It's true about Bernard, but how bad of a place are we in as a defense when we're relying so heavily upon a mental midget like Bernard to develop.

As for the love-fest for our guards around here, I don't see it. I think there's a ton of hope based on nothing but...hope. With Weeden the statue back there instead of Scrappy-Doo, their lack of blocking is going to be exposed.

Buncha Homers.

the OGs definitely improved by the end of last season, but I agree some people are taking that too far. i don't think they were league average yet.

they went from absolutely terrible (the Indy and Seattle games in particular) to passable. I am hoping they get to league average or better this year but it will definitely take some growth to do so.

Don't know what you are watching, to be quite honest. Pinkston was a good guard last year, especially in pass protection. Luavao is a good run blocker, who needs some help in pass protection.

I don't see any reason why they cannot work on this, with a year of chemistry, workouts, and experience. Then again, I understand that having any type of optimism is frowned upon, and saying that the offensive line was average to good last year is hypocrisy in these parts.

Here's how all that looks...

Mack is a good center. Thomas is the best LT in football. So if the guard play was solid, that means the only position on the line that sucked was RT.

By all accounts the line-play last year was not very good. So based on the above, we're essentially saying that the right tackle was the reason the line sucked.

It doesn't add up.

I think there's optimism for the guards based on hope that they'll improve because of their youth. I don't share that optimism, though I do share the hope.

Here is where we disagree:

I don't think the line sucked last year. Right Tackle included.

He wasn't even close to St. Turnstile.

The line was providing time for QB's to throw and running backs to run. The problem was the QB and the running back.

Hopefully we fixed that.

I wouldn't call the guard play "solid" I would call it "promising".. I think you had a fair amount of good play with some bad play that can be chalked up to youth... and those bad plays are the ones that stand out. We also had very substandard/inconsistent play from our RBs, QB, and WRs which will make just about any OL look bad.

If you watched their performance, the right side was most of the problem. Our left side performed consistently. Pinkston will be solid nestled between both Mac and Thomas. Now in regards to Lauvao, he gave up a lot of penelties and broke down in pass protection. My hope is that Schwartz will be able to help that right side.

Hopefully, un-Shurmur will realize that Trent Richardson is the key to offensive productivity THIS year and not force 61 pass attempts a game. I honestly believe our line is built to run this year.

Oh, and this being a Weeden thread: Weeden won't take as many hits as McCoy did last year.

You're forgetting the linebackers and defensive ends. We have Fujita/Maiava on one side as starters. Sheard is our only DE who can rush the passer.

Even if we make the HUGE assumptions that Weeden can be middle of the pack in his rookie year, that TR is the solution at RB, and that Little is a #1 receiver, we need at least these guys to make the jump to good starting NFL player:

Lauvau
Pinkston
Schwartz
Alex Smith or Jordan Cameron
Massaquoi
Norwood/Benjamin/Mitchell
Rucker/Parker
Maiava
Skrine/Patterson
Young/Haag

That's a lot of folks who have to make a jump, and probabilities tells us at least some of them won't.

We do not have a proven above average starter at RG, LG, RT, FB, #2 TE, #1WR, #2 WR, #3 WR, QB, RB, #2 pass rusher, OLB (for at least 3 games), #2 CB, and #2 Safety.

But hey, we've got loads of potential!

Our team is still pretty young. Who knows who's lightbulb will come on. I honestly think that Maiava will be replaced as the starter mid-season and I think our #2 CB is on our roster and NOT named Sheldon the liability Brown.

Your post makes the assumption that to be a competitive team that you have to have above average talent at all 22 positions, which simply isn't true. The Steelers succeeded for years with a few glaring weaknesses in the OL and the secondary but some of their other players were good enough to make up for it.. the Patriots were in the super bowl this year with a few gigantic holes in their defense, etc...

I've said for a long time and I still believe it, the Browns aren't 12 decent players away from being competitive, they are 3 or 4 great players away. One Troy P. makes almost all of our secondary problems go away and some of our linebacker problems because the other players are "good enough"... an Demarcus Ware type player would have a similar impact...

On offense it begins with the QB.. really good play from the QB will elevate the status of just about every offensive position on your list whether they improve individually or not... I believe we are now set at RT and RB spots, though its not guaranteed.

In short I don't think we need all of the positions you listed to make a huge leap just to get to 8 wins...

I don't want to be "competitive" I want to win a championship. I think you need above average starters at 80-90% of your positions and a top QB.

That doesn't mean I expect that this year. I'll be happy with competitive and with steady improvement. I enjoy watching the young guys develop. But I'm not going to talk myself into being ok with what we have because we might be competitive. If a guy on our roster is just ok enough to be competitive with him, he isn't the answer to the position and we need to look for an upgrade.

I appreciate that because I don't want to be happy with 8 wins every year either. This year I'm hoping for competitive weekly in games, next year I'm hoping for playoff competitive... then on from there.

But by the same logic, of those on your list who you say need to make a big leap... those that aren't are going to fall off and be replaced... if 3 or 4 can make the leap to above average this year... then replace 4 or 5 next year via draft and FA.. then 3 or 4 make the leap... that is how we will get where we need to be 2 or 3 years from now.

In my opinion our run game could be elite level with this big strong mauling line combined with Trent Richardson. I have to admit, I am absolutely pumped about this OL and our backfield.

Our passing game could not be any worse if we tried one year ago. Average QB play would make this offense downright intimidating.

Defense side, FS and blindside pass rusher worry me. I dont know how much Parker has left and I dont know if Benard can get it going. FS is a big gaping hole, my vote is move Skrine to FS. i think weakside backer should be ok with one of the rookies. I like both of those kids we just drafted.

Sadly, this has been the train of thought just about every year since the return. Expectations were a bit higher in '03 and '08.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Brandon Weeden knows he's on the fast track to be the Browns' starting quarterback, and it can't happen soon enough.

"I feel like I'm ready," Weeden told The Plain Dealer Thursday. "I have a long way to go, but I feel like I've taken the right steps to get to where I can play at that level.

"If I'm asked to be the guy Day One, I'm going to do everything on my part to put our team in position to win games and score points. I'm really anxious to get going and the season will be here before you know it."

Weeden, the No. 22 overall pick, said he's been inspired by the rookie quarterbacks who started last season.

"You see guys like Andy Dalton and Cam Newton and Christian Ponder that came in, these guys played relatively soon. That's what I mentioned to teams the entire time, that my maturity in baseball will help," he said. "There's going to be a learning curve. It's going to be a challenge, but I have a lot of faith in my ability to play football."

Weeden, who will attend rookie camp May 11-13, said he's been mostly insulated from the buzz his selection generated, including the impact on the status of Colt McCoy and Seneca Wallace.

"I understand how that works," he said. "It's a business and there's a lot that goes into it, but honestly, I'm still in Oklahoma trying to get all my stuff together, so I'm not in Cleveland, which probably makes it a little bit different.

"Those are two great quarterbacks and they've had a lot of success at that level. It's kind of something you need, kind of relying on them, getting help from those guys. Like I said, I'm just really just champing at the bit to get to Cleveland and get going on learning this offense and meeting the guys around me and start working to win a lot of football games."

Weeden also knows he's been asked to elevate the play of the current crop of receivers. The Browns also drafted Miami speedster Travis Benjamin.

"It's all about the chemistry," said Weeden. "It's all about comfort, trusting the guys you're throwing it to and letting them make a play. That's going to take some time, working with these guys and getting a feel for what each guy can do.

"I look forward to us pushing each other and getting the most out of each other."

One of Weeden's Oklahoma State targets, Josh Cooper, is coming to Cleveland as an undrafted free agent. Weeden was driving in the car with Cooper Thursday when he did the phone interview. Cooper was Oklahoma State's second-leading receiver last season behind Justin Blackmon, with 71 catches for 715 yards and three TDs.

"We came in the same year and he's a guy that's made a lot of big-time plays for us at Oklahoma State," said Weeden. "Josh is actually going to live with me, so we'll be able to help each other learn this entire system and get through this entire process."

Weeden, who went 23-3 the past two seasons, said it won't be a problem going from the spread's shotgun attack to the West Coast scheme and operating under center.

"When I was at the Senior Bowl and I was under center, we ran the same exact offense as we run in Cleveland," he said. "I felt more comfortable under center than actually taking snaps in the shotgun.

"The biggest difference between the West Coast offense and what we did at Oklahoma State is the terminology. I don't think it will be a huge, huge, adjustment at all."

He also disputed critics who questioned his ability to throw under duress.

"You've just to get a feel for it," he said. "You have to stand in there and take a hit. If you throw a good ball and you take a shot to the chin, it's always a little more fun.

"To be the quarterback you've got to be a tough guy. You don't get to hit anybody, everybody just gets to hit you, so you've just got to take on that mentality."

Weeden said he appreciated working with former Browns offensive coordinator Marc Trestman for three days before the NFL combine and also meeting former Browns QB Bernie Kosar at the Senior Bowl.

"I've talked to [Kosar] from then on out," said Weeden. "Obviously he had a great career in Cleveland. When you get to this level you need guys like that to talk to and help get a feel for what you're about to go through."

For fans wanting to buy his jersey, he confirmed what everyone already knew.

"I'm letting the cat out of the bag," he said. "I was informed Friday I'll be wearing No. 3."

If that's going to work, it's gotta happen very quickly for Weeden, and I'm not referencing his age.

He's gotta learn to read while dropping, plant, then throw on time. That's the very foundation of this philosophy, and the thing that McCoy couldn't do. McCoy bought more time than people may have given him credit for, though, and the closest Weeden can get to that is to learn to slide in the pocket instead of just run from it. So far, he doesn't do much of that. He's got to learn to do that....very quickly.

(common theme, hehe)

He's never seen an offense like this, nor directed one like it against NFL-style defenses, the which he's never seen either. He has to learn to do those two things....very quickly.

Weeden needs to learn how to stand in the face of pressure, make a read, and make a good throw. That is something he's not very good at right now, and he's going to have to learn to do that....very quickly.

In short, there's numerous things this soon-to-be 29-year old has to learn to do. And yes. He must learn them...very quickly.

Not one team in the entire league has an above average starter at every position. That is ridiculous.

"Josh is actually going to live with me, so we'll be able to help each other learn this entire system and get through this entire process."

It would be financially prudent for him to seek a more long term solution for a roommate.

As for the love-fest for our guards around here, I don't see it. I think there's a ton of hope based on nothing but...hope. With Weeden the statue back there instead of Scrappy-Doo, their lack of blocking is going to be exposed.

Buncha Homers.

Toad...I welcome you to my neighborhood...the Oline.

The Browns OGs, Pinkston and Lauvao, were exposed for exactly what they were...rookies.

Lauvao was a 2 year guy who had started but one game his rookie year, so technically, he was a rookie. Pinkston, who played 4 yrs at Pitt as an OT, was converted to play guard after Steinbach suffered a back injury needing surgery.

There were times...many times, defenses took advantage of the Browns lack of experience at OG, blitzing the center of the Oline, forcing McCoy to run for his life.

One of my greatest complaints of our Guard play was how easily they were shoved back into the pocket and into the face of our QB. The pocket was collapsed from the center push and that was without blitzing.

McCoy has the ability to run away from that pressure...Weeden does not have the same speed and quickness...he will be a sitting duck, for the most part.

Weeden is a pure pocket passer who must rely on his offensive line to protect him. Weeden will not be successful if his Oline does not provide him with a "pocket" to throw from.

Those who envision our QB defeating the rush with quick, short passing...it won't take the defenders long before they start jumping those short routes.

Those who envision our QB defeating the rush by throwing deep...our QB has to have the time and space to needed to complete a long pass.

Best way to defeat the pass rush up the center...develop the center of your offensive line so they can stone the pass rush and provide a pocket around their QB.

The two OGs who started for the Browns last season must improve their play. If they don't Weeden will be a sitting duck and everyone will be wondering what is wrong with our QB.

Couldn't agree with you more, Mac.

You readin' this, H & H? Mac and I are in agreement. That's how you guys in the FO know you've got a REAL problem...

Weeden would have to learn all of that quickly, whether he was 22 or 28.

This age thing is quickly getting on my nerves. I guess once Weeden hits 33, his arm falls off...or something.

you had a good run Hank.

good thing for Weeden is his short-term memory is so bad at his age that the age questions don't get on his nerves

If that's going to work, it's gotta happen very quickly for Weeden, and I'm not referencing his age. - 'Toad

I'd watched a ton of him. Only natural since I'm here in Texas. My #1 bartender is an Okie so I always allow him to put one of the bar TV's on Oklahoma and/or OK State games. Before the draft I'd watched all I could find on him. Since we've drafted him, I've re-watched all of that ad-nauseum. He's got some serious holes in his game. I keep looking for the positives, and I do see those, but the negatives are glaring, and all the pre-season optimism isn't going to change that. Based on all that, here's my official prediction of what his rookie stat-line is going to look like if he starts all 16 games:

57% comp rate, 3300 yards, 17 TD's 23 INT's with a 75 rating.

21 or 29, a rookie is a rookie, and no amount of linear years are going to change Weeden's learning curve coming out of the college spread.

I'll tell you what is making me have a cynical chuckle...the double-standard that Weeden himself is using when it comes to his age. He wants people to ignore his age. He wanted teams to ignore it. He wants the media to ignore it. But you know what else he wants everyone to embrace? His maturity.

I see...his age doesn't matter...until it works in his favor.

I don't care about his "maturity." That BS hasn't prepared him for the NFL. The only thing his maturity has prepared him for is failure because he's suffered it with a failed baseball career. Conversely, I don't care about his age at all. I care about the offense he came from, his lack of execution when pressured, and all the other issues which pertain to his shortcomings as a QB.

A 5-win season seems appropriate...

sadly, I see alot of the same flaws. I am hoping that we open up the triangle throws more (stronger arm means the out is a more viable option), which in turn opens up more of the WCO route trees.

but, your above stats are really worst case scenario to me. they are basically the compl% and yards from Colt's 2nd year combined with his TD:INT rate from his rookie year. Otherwise known as the worst portions of Colt's time as a Cleveland Brown. I surely hope that the worst of what we have seen from Colt doesn't get combined into what we do see from Weeden.

No kiddin! Looking back at some of our major busts over the years you see several all-pro players that we passed on... hindsight...

I really hope that this kid can play. My biggest worries on him is just his lack of experience over the last couple of years coming out from under center and having to learn the WCO.... I really hope that he can pick up both very quickly.

With our luck we'll find out the kid can really play. He'll start out on fire and no team will be able to figure him out, then heading out of our 14th straight win against RG3 and the Skins we'll suddenly find out, the Mayans were right...
