Well, the bipolar was a JOKE, hence the smiley face. Second, my players UNDERSTAND THE GAME and don't think the QB is the automatic fix for a team filled with many holes. Third, they love going to the playoffs and winning conference championships and getting into college programs, so yes, they do love playing for me Now, on to your rant. Maybe the typical ignorant fan thinks that the QB is the single most important position and would need it drafted immediately, but the KNOWLEDGEABLE ones would understand that every player's performance is dependant on the performance of others. It's called being part of a team. Of course, these same fans you are referring to were touting Kelly Holcomb for the Pro Bowl, Mike Junkiins for the HOF, and Craig Powell for DROY in past years.

Shaub become unrestricted next year... please don't waste any picks on him... let Frye do his thing!!
If we traded for Shaub, there would be a long term deal in the mix. We wouldn't take him without a new contract in place.
As for the idea of trading our #3 and getting their #10 and Schaub (and maybe their 44th too). GO FOR IT! Of course Atlanta wouldn't do that until draft day.....if Calvin Johnson was their target.
We could get Amobi Okoye, Levi Brown or Leon Hall at 10. And holding the 36th and 44th picks....wow! We could pick more or trade up again. That would be my dream scenario!

But, if we have a rookie QB starting, wouldn't the "win now" pressure be eased?
If our team isn't ready to "win now," drafting and starting a rookie QB buys RAC time. I think anyone with basic football 101 common sense wouldn't blame a losing season on RAC if we started a rookie QB.
If we need to slow down the optimism around here and be more realistic, a rookie QB will do it.
Draft Quinn, draft Russell, pick up Shaub, pick up Carr, start Frye, start Anderson... I don't really care which one you do, if RAC wins 4 or 5 games this year, he's gone...
We don't need to slow down the optimism here, we need to speed up the production on Sunday... some fans have been optmistic, some pessimistic, most have wavered between the two for what? 8 years now? yet we're all still here... and you want me to SLOW DOWN my optimism? GMAFB... just out of curiosity, when exactly should I expect the Browns to win 8 or 9 games or possibly even eek out a wildcard spot? 2010? 2013?

I threw up in my mouth when I heard Carr and the Browns mentioned in the same sentence.
When will this end?

DC, he really doesn't mean that. He is defending his desire for drafting a QB. This is the same guy that said after ONE PLAY he know Frye wasn't a QB, he demanded apologies from the Browns all last year, and determined a first year starter was not NFL quality after one year. Does that REALLY sound like a guy that would give another QB more time and curb enthusiasm? The only player he'd give ANY time to develop would be Troy Smith and that's because he's been humping Smith's leg since around September like a dog in heat.

I agree with that actually. But if Vers is right and the Browns are nowhere near ready this year, what would save RAC's job? I'm thinking worse case scenario here. Best case I think we're a 9-7 or maybe a 10-6 team, depending on the possible implosion of our divisional opponents.
I'm done with setting myself up for disappointment though, I did it last year and it really took the life out of me. Right now I'm looking at what would save jobs as this team is being built if the worst case scenario occurs next year.
But hey, I too would like to win some damn games around here. It's wearing on me.

Lets think about David Carr.
Our 3rd pick is worth 2200 points.
The Texans 8th pick is worth 1400 points.
Thats a gap of 800 points.
We can take thier first round pick (1400), thier 2nd round pick (500) and David Carr.
Thats the equivaltent of 1900 points with 300 left over. So our front office has to decide if David Carr is worth 300 points or the equivalent of a late second round pick.
Personally I wouldnt trade our 1st round pick at all this year since outside the top 5 there seems to be a drop off in talent. It'd be better for our team to stay at 3.

300 is worth a late 2nd. Which might be a little high for Carr.....but maybe they can throw in an extra 4th or 5th. Doesn't matter really, the draft chart isn't the Bible. It doesn't have to match. You sometimes have to pay extra to drop or rise to get the man/men you need.
I want to drop down, pick Branch, Hall, Okoye and get an extra 2nd....which we could use to jump back into the middle of the first and get Marshawn Lynch or Levi Brown.
Think about it.....Carr, Okoye and Lynch or Schaub, Hall, Brown....all using our #3 and #36. Three players for two picks.
Would you want that?

Give Charlie a line that doesn't have him contstantly in fear for his life, a productive running game, a lot fewer INTs that bounce off our receivers, and another year under his belt...
and we have the same kid who can't read a defense, doesn't know where the pass rush is coming from, who won't throw the ball untill after the receiver makes his break or untill the receiver has 5 yards on the cover guy, who can't lead a receiver to save his life, who can't make all the throws that an NFL QB needs to be able to make, who runs into sacks, who holds the ball too long....do we need to keep going?????
Oline was a BIG problem for Charlie....But Charlie was a BIG problem for his Oline as well. Charlies receivers didn't help Charlie all of the time...but Charlie didn't help his receivers either. Our running game didn't help Charlie as well....but Charlie couldn't make Defenses respect the passing game which didn't help our running game.
We had a lot of problems...and Charlie was NOT the center of it all...but too many people think that Charlie is innocent in all of this and it is hogwash....
Charlie completed over 60% of his passes. Usually with somebody in his face. Yet you guys call him inacruate. Sure they were short passes but he didn't have time to wait on the receivers to get down field. I hope Schuab, Carr Quinn, Russell can do that while laying on their back with a 300# lineman sitting on their chest. I think maybe some of you guys should watch some reruns of last years games.

Smells like a 3 team deal coming up. Frye to Tampa, Plummer to Houston, Carr to Cleveland. 3 starting qbs that didnt do jack last year. Makes sense to me.

I would prefer Carr over Schaub, but that's just my opinion. Maybe our improved line can help keep him off of his back.

I don't quite get why either Carr OR Shaub look interesting to us. Schaub has been a back up his whole career, and given it's been behind Michael Vick, but he's been on the bench and how do we know how good he really is? I just don't have that much faith in his abilities. I think he's like another Derek Anderson. He looks good for a few games, you think he could win it for you, but then he just starts to stink and you start to see why he was back up. Maybe I'm wrong, but unless we get him, I don't really care if I am or not.
As far as Carr is concerned, I don't have any faith in him either. I think he is just a Charlie Frye clone. He has the mobility, but doesn't have the arm. He got most of his completions from short in and out routes didn't he? I just don't see him being an improvement because he's just going from a bad situation into a not much better one. Infact, I think he's more ruined than Charlie is because he's been in the frying pan longer.
So I guess I'm just asking why everyone or anyone is excited or interested in this happening. I'd rather have us keep our draft picks, try out Charlie for this year, and if need be, draft a QB next year. Or just draft a QB if one falls to us this year.... that is if Joe Thomas isn't there. But I'm just saying, why care about Schaub or Carr?

j/c If we're looking for a QB, then take Russell or Quin at #3 period. At least they may develop into quality starters or maybe even a Brady or Manning... NO WAY would I want a 2nd string QB or a beat up starter from a team that's possibly worse than ours in exchange for the number three without some serious extra to boot.
Shuab would only be under contract for one year LOL! And we have no idea what the mental and physical condition of Carr really is! I'll say it now...SMOKE SCREEN...SMOKE SCREEN... SMOKE SCREEN
Phils Draft Board looks like this ; Thomas Russell (We won't Trade until these two are gone) TRADE DOWN FOR EXTREME VALUE AP- All Day Quinn CJ
Personally I want AP/Quinn. I doubt that I will get what I want.

Getting a possilby real good starting QB and a potential star defensive end like Adam Carriker or Alan Branch would be a nice tradedown for us, and it would probably get Atlanta Calvin Johnson barring the whole Moss/Rodgers trade ordeal actually happening.

I'm a Frye Guy. I like him, think he will do just fine, and wish you haters would shut up. (lol, actually keep talking it's why I read). Still though the person who mentioned gametape was right on. Go back and watch what Charlie went though.....he did ok, with what he had. I want AP or Thomas, but whatever Phil does I have faith in. I see us winnig about 10 games this year with the pickups Phil has made, and with players coming fully back from injuries, and our draft. C'mon folks drop the loser attitudes.....the browns are going to be ok, deep breathe, the browns will be ok. See how easy it is to believe? Go ahead you know you want to.

Toad, all this news is not new.

It's news to me.
Quote:
As for Schaub,,, Man I just don't get it. With all the problems Atl has had getting Vick to fit into any particular system, why hasn't this guy emerged as the best candidate. ( I'm no Vick fan by the way) I mean if he's so good, and there being such an apparent shortage of quality starting QB,,, why is it that nobody has attempted to give up the farm for him before..
Emerged as what? Vick was given.......what was it.......a $100 million dollar contract? You don't give that to a guy then let the backup compete for the job.
As for Shaub, last season the Falcons wanted a 1st for him, but they weren't sure they were ready to move forward with Vick. Now it looks like they are still open to the possibility of trading Shaub, but unlike last year, there could be a market for him.
Nobody is saying he's the next great QB, but he's got some pretty good potential and all the tools.
Quote:
Catch 22,,,, Keep the pick, lose out on Schaub and Carr but severly improve the line.. Trade the 3rd pick for either Carr or Schaub and some picks but miss out on the line potential,
Sometimes making the entire team better outweighs one player. If I knew that the extra pick becomes our starting defensive end for the next 7 years, it's a deal I'd have to seriously think about, especially if it lands us a QB. The odds are that Frye isn't the guy. Tough, but true. Sometimes the only way to move forward is to try the next guy.
Now, there's nothing that says we can't send our 2nd rounder to the Falcons straight up. That keeps Thomas in play. Or we send them the 2nd and drop down a few spots in the first round so a team can land Quinn. With Johnson there we can drop a couple of spots and perhaps land Thomas.
The possiblities are numerous, but the bottom line is what makes the team better. As a single selection, Thomas does more for this team than any other player because it addresses two positions and maybe even three. But what if we move down? That ALSO addresses more than one position, as it picks up either a future #1 or at the least another #2 this year.
Whatever makes the team better, quicker.

Schaub was drafted by the Falcons with the 90th overall choice in the third round of the 2004 NFL draft. There was a reason Schaub was a third round pick

I do not want Shaub. We have to many other needs to be wasting early first day picks on a 3rd round QB who really hasn't done anything in this league.
We need look no further than our own historical archives to see how ineptitude leads a team to the cellar. Not my line...but it is a good one.

With the right coaching, lots of hardwork, and some support from the rest of the offense Schaub could eventually be the next Kelly Holcomb.

Ya know, I keep seeing that floating around the board, and I have to say this: Shaub has tools that Holcomb never had. Holcomb only got a shot because Couch failed. Nothing more, nothing less.
Whatever Shaub may or may not be, he's got abilities that street free agents like Holcomb aren't born with. For that reason he was a 1st day QB, and for that reason he's a hot comodity.

Since I see no articles noting his value after being shopped, I'd say the answer is no
Now having quipped about it, you know damned well that 3rd round comparison an't gonna fly *L*
In some ways, you are right. Shaub may be benefiting from NOT playing as much as Frye. That may keep his value higher. Keep in mind I'm not saying Shaub is the answer, but I believe Frye isn't, and just like Holcomb when Couch was here, sometimes you have to go to the next option because the current one isn't working.
I'm not behind dumping Frye, I'm for giving him one last chance, but I'd make it a quick hook then send him to the bench. I love what he brings to the table as a spot-starter/backup type. Entering his 3rd year, it's time to tinkle or get off the pot. That's more than fair for any QB in this league. It's also telling that the team had obviously decided to explore other options.

While I say I wouldn't mind the trade, and I really wouldn't, I'm all about building the team first. I think we can do just as well by sending a 2nd day pick to KC and eeking out two more seasons of Trent Green.
If I can't get Thomas, I'm all for dropping down in the draft to acquire more picks. Dropping to 10 puts us in the Alan Branch area of the draft. If that were done with a Shaub trade, it also nets us another 2nd rounder and a high one at that. Setting that aside, I'm for dropping down and acquiring nothing BUT picks. 2nd this year and a 1st next year? Where do I sign *L*

j/c: All this is a matter of opinion and none of us can really prove anything. With that said, I feel obligated to give my opinion. I will be extremely pissed if we move out of the 3 hole to trade for either Carr or Shaub. I've wanted the Browns to trade down every year since 1999. No exceptions. However, this year is different. We can get a stud at # 3, and that guy is probably going to be Joe Thomas. Trading him away for later picks and one of these two qbs is dumb. I thought Carr was okay a few years ago, but the guy has regressed. I realize his poor OL is a big reason for his slide, but this isn't time for sympathy. I want the Browns to win. Carr has become almost as bad as Timid. He has lost his nerve. He has happy feet and checks down even when he does have time. He is flustered whether he has pressure or not and his accuracy has digressed in recent years. He's damaged goods and trading the opportunity to draft the best LT in a long, long time for Carr and others is dumb. I could see taking a chance on Carr if he was ever released, but we are talking about losing Joe Freaking Thomas here. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Shaub has some skills. I pimped him when he was coming out of UVA. However, he has proven nothing. He did last until the 3rd round and we wanna pass on the opportunity to draft Thomas for a maybe? You may, but I don't. Look guys. We are behind in the trenches. The OL has been our sore spot since '99. Clark started it, Butch continued it, and Savage has not drafted a day one OL either. It's time. Actually, it is past time. But, just because we [censored] up in the past, it doesn't mean we should keep [censored] up. We have a great opportunity to start the process of healing our wounds. We already signed Steinbach. If Bents comes back next year, all the better. We draft Joe and we can actually improve THREE MOTHER [censored] positions. LT.....RG......RT. That's huge. Tell me how damn nice it would be to actually be able to run the ball between the tackles on 3rd or 4th and 1 or 2? Tell me how nice it would be to actually be able to run on 1st down and pick up yardage? Tell me how nice it would be to see our QB drop back and get the kind of time teams do when they play us? Cut the [censored] BS. Suck it up and draft Joe. Hell, I wouldn't mind Trent Green here for 2 years either. I would much rather have him and Joe than either Carr/Shaub and Branch. It's not even close in my book, although most of you probably disagree. What's new?

I agree with you completely. However, I don't know if the same can be said for Phil. He has stated that LT is a skill position, so I guess that's something to hang your hat on. With the way he has drafted in his first two years combined with his eagerness to build the line through FA again this year, (going after Dielman after already picking up Steinbach) I'm not sure he really believes in building the Oline through the draft.

LOL........you're right. And if you think I have been harsh on Savage previously, wait and see what happens if he pulls off a bone head move like trading the # 3 pick for a combo of Carr/Shaubb and the other's team's #1. Truthfully, the guy is having a decent off-season. He can make it a great one by drafting Joe. And it would be ugly if he makes a bone-headed trade like the one suggested earlier.

"Trade Down!" was a staple on DTMB, and now we are here and the FO is talking about trading down. Unless Savage rapes another team for all they are worth, I see us staying at#3. I think that all the talk about trading DOWN, is to get teams to trade up with Detroit, knowing they will probably take a QB there. I don't see us trading down, and I see Detroit either trading down or selecting Thomas outright. I would love to see JT at #3. I will say this, MAtt Schaub nor David Carr are a vast improvement over Charlie Frye IMO.

Now Clayton is reporting that Lerner wants Quinn and the Browns might trade places w/Detroit to make sure they draft him.

Cut the [censored] BS. Suck it up and draft Joe. Hell, I wouldn't mind Trent Green here for 2 years either. I would much rather have him and Joe than either Carr/Shaub and Branch.
Agree totally. Although I don't know how much Trent's contract would keep this from happening. Isn't he due about $7 million in salary this year?
