You can't keep Colt McCoy away from work with BrownsBy Gregg Rosenthal NFL.com Around The League editor Published: April 30, 2012 at 05:44 p.m. Updated: April 30, 2012 at 06:14 p.m. On Thursday morning, the Cleveland Browns leaked information that they expected Colt McCoy to make a "big leap forward" in 2012. By Thursday night, he was on the trade block.
Unlock HQ Video HQ video delivered by Akamai
Monday has arrived, and McCoy is back where he started: The Browns' team facility. Tom Withers of The Associated Press noted that McCoy was present for the team's offseason program.
Really, what choice does he have?
Jason La Canfora of NFL Network tells ATL that the Browns expect McCoy to be back on the team. The Browns can't get anything for him in a trade unless some injury pops up on another team during training camp. It appears the Browns won't push McCoy out the door, and he's clearly not pushing to leave.
It's all a little awkward because the Browns clearly see Brandon Weeden as their starter. Give McCoy credit for realizing that his best chance to actually compete for snaps remains with the Browns.

IMO, this show the character of McCoy. His dedication to his job is fantastic. I'm sure he knows the score, but I would bet everything that he tries to change the outcome. Keeping him IMO is a good idea. Cut ties with Wallace, keep Colt as the back-up, and if Weeden struggles you got a capable player with experience. I really believe that this offseason will benefit Colt very much. I don't think his physical skills can equal his will and dedication, but he's a guy I want on my team.

Keeping him is a horrible idea. It just feeds the fire.
I'd simply let him go if I couldn't convince someone to give me a conditional 5th rounder for the guy.

I don't often disagree with you Peen but on this one I will. If colt can come in and beat out Wallace or Weeden in camp. Then he should be on the team. Name another backup that knows the system and will be as cheap? The one thing most fans will agree upon is that Colt would make a great backup to some team. Why not us if that's where the competition lands him?

I have to admit, I would probably dump Colt and Wallace. Just bring in McNabb to work with the youngster.

I don't see anyone giving us much of anything for him.
We might get a 7th if someone gets hurt.
I dunno ...... I see a lot of bad things that can happen if we keep McCoy, but then again, the receivers and OL are probably going to love Weeden since they might not get blamed for everything under the sun anymore.

I disagree. Make Weeden earn it. If he's as good as the FO thinks he is, it will be obvious in camp that he should be the starter. Weeden is far from a can't miss QB. A little pressure will only help in his development.

Considering how he got beat up last year, I'm thinking he'll be glad to hold a clipboard!

I think keeping McCoy is a good idea. He has an edge up on learning/knowing the system, 1 year more so than Weeden. Everyone (OK not everybody, but most everybody) has said he would make an good backup QB in the league, so why not for us.
To those that think he will cause trouble, I disagree, just simply my opinion. Colt has always come across as a team-first guy, and not one to go running to the media saying, 'see, I should be playing because of...'. (His dad might be another story though, haha). To me, those that imagine it will start a controversy are already wanting one, so they can bash the 'other' guy (be it Weeden or Colt). Some people just like conflict, drama queens I think they are called, and they would cause it, even if there really wasn't anything to it. Some writer that used to be at the PD comes to mind, actually so does one still there. Talk radio needs something as well however their perception is not always reality.
I just doubt Colt is that kinda person to cause strife intentionally within the team, the fans and media will create it out of nothing (mole hill meet mountain).
I believe it was Bill Walsh who said; 'the most important player on a football team is the starting QB, the 2nd most important person, his backup'. To me having Colt with his experience here learning/getting to know the system only makes us that much better. I don't think Wallace is as good a locker room presence nor team player to rely on as Colt would/will be.
Plus I don't think there is a market for Colt at all, at this time. Perhaps next year we deal him for some value, or if a team suffers some injuries prior to or just as the season starts and perhaps we can get over-market, until then I think he has good value for us as the backup. Depth is something we lack, no sense getting rid of it if we don't have to just yet.
jmho.

Between Colt and Weeden and looking at film of Weeden, Weeden would have to be the choice to be starter. His arm is simply spectacular and can make the throws even from one hash mark to the other side of the field. The problem is that it might a QB controversy if Weedn shows any signs of floundering. I do think Weeden becoming the starter because I don't ee us drafting a 29 year old to be a grooming qb.

Better than McCoy? Yep. Good even? Sure. Spectacular?? Hardly.
When Weeden flounders this season, it won't matter who is behind him. He'll have to handle the criticism that will come with it. It is part of the job.
People are just going to have to be patient. Weeden is going to struggle. All rookies do. Count on it being ugly early and hope for noticeable improvement as the season progresses. My expectations are very low for the guy this season. They will be much higher next season.

Afraid of a little competition?
Look, What if Colt comes and blows Weeden out of the water? do you still want weeden to start?
Let it play out..

Unless he's developed some skills we haven't seen yet, I have a better chance at a hot tub session with Carmen Electra.
I think it's a good idea to keep McCoy on the team. He's a respectable human being and a team first kind of guy. He'll do whatever's asked of him, including helping out the new guy.

The Browns will not allow that to happen.
And if that happens, then we wasted a first round pick.
Weeden is going to be given every chance to start and work through any struggles. McCoy had his time as starter.
I doubt they even have a competition in camp.

I worry about this too. I don't think Colt will cause problems, but I think the media will. They will focus so much on the Weeden vs Colt story. It's just gonna get sickening.
It's not right because I want Colt to be our backup. He'd be a great backup for us. He's the type of guy I like to root for, he comes at a low cost, and he's got a great attitude.
But the Colt Weeden thing might become such a huge focus for the media.
I kind of wish the media would tone it down with the Weeden thing, period. I mean, jesus, we picked a running back at #3. The guy is RIDICULOUSLY GOOD. Why isn't more focus being paid on him?
The Weeden background and story is just too good I guess. But from my judgement, Colt would make a great backup, unfortunately, we deal with a free press that doesn't care about what's best for the Browns. They only care about selling newspapers. Non stop focus on Weeden and how he took the job from Colt will come from the Ohio papers

For a second, I thought I'd argue w/ you, but I think you're right. We got Richardson and beefed up the O-Line. Colt could look considerably better if given the chance.
Has anyone ever utilized a first round pick on a QB to keep their veteran QB on his toes? Don't think so . . .

Who's fire does it feed besides fanbase that can't let go? I don't believe that it's always a bad idea to keep a former starter, especially when they are young and there's a slight chance the "light" comes on while they are on the bench; leaving us with a viable backup in case Weeden goes down.
From a fianancial standpoint it would benefit our available cap space to let Wallace go instead of McCoy. Plus, I felt that Wallace may be more of a distraction in the locker room than McCoy. I see them both on the same level as far as talent, with McCoy having a slightly higher ceiling. As far as leadership is concerned, McCoy is heads above Wallace, his willingness to continue workouts with no comments or complaints considering our front office's moves to replace him speaks volumes about his maturity.

They had better. If the season ticket holders see that Colt is the better QB, just who do you they are gonna want? That includes me. I want the best man for the job.. if Colts wins that competition, then I want Colt. If Weeden wins then I want Weeden. If that hurts Holmgrens feelings.. too bad so sad. If that hurts Heckert's ego.. tough kibbles and bits.

I repeat myself. They had better. I'm going to camp.. Mary Kay is going to camp, Grossi is going to camp, STO is going to camp. If it's obvious Colt is blowing BeeWee out then I want Colt to start and I won't be shy about saying so. If BeeWee wins, then start BeeWee.

I'm telling you, they are not going to allow that to happen.
Colt will get maybe 5 snaps every practice with the first team.
And the FO has every right to do that too. The worst thing that could happen to a young team like this is to fracture a locker room between two QBs. Make it clear that Weeden is the starter and that McCoy is the backup.
And I doubt Colt could beat out Weeden anyway. If there is one place I expect Weeden to get incredibly rave reviews, its in shorts on a practice field.

Exactly.
Weeden would have to crap his pants to the point of unmitigated embarrassment in order for Colt to even sniff a shot.
It's not happening. I could see both of them looking similar, but nothing that would make people think 'Colt should start'.

I hate being agnostic. I'm having people selling me on either scenario.
If they do decide on ditching Colt, I wonder if a straight-up trade for someone else's backup QB might be possible.

No competition between a 28,000 year old rookie and Colt? What are they afraid of?
Let the best QB be the starter.

Well, for one, does it really matter who is the best player this year? You used a 1st round pick on a QB, he's going to start.
But for the sake of argument, going through a QB competition is bad for everyone on the team. The locker room gets split, the coaching staff gets split, and you are emotionally drained before you even play one real game.
Weeden is the starter.

BeeWee probably is. All I'm saying is I want the best to play, and I'll say so. I'm a season tickey holder and I'm just a bit mouthy about what I pay for. I won't give Holmgren and Heckert the key to the city just for giggles. I want to see results.

This is the nfl. Just as Colt was possibly told the Browns weren't taking a qb - they did. In the first round. Weeden is the starter as of now.
If, IF Colt shows Weeden up in camp, the draft choice was a waste.
If a first round draft qb can't beat what many on here have called a terrible qb.........well, do the math.
I fully, 100% expect Weeden to be the starter, and regardless how he does, he gets the year. (short of injury, of course, but that goes for anyone).
So, get rid of seneca, or Colt? I sincerely get the impression that Colt will do anything and everything to improve himself as a player, BUT, he will also attempt to help Weeden. Voluntarily.
Wallace? He's flat out said in the past he'll answer questions if they are directed at him but he's not here to be a mentor or helper.
Seneca is the locker room problem type player. Colt is not.
Plus, look at the difference in salary.
It's a simple answer: Seneca is packing his stuff.

I will say that I agree with everything in this post with the exception of your opinion of Weeden being a wasted pick if McCoy beats him out in camp. I think McCoy has the upper edge just because he has a year in the system. This is coming from a fan that is NOT a fan of the Weeden pick. I'm an avid Browns supporter when I say this and trully believe that McCoy deserves the shot at a competition; however, since this FO went out and spent the 22nd pick on Weeden, he should start day one and roles need to be identified between the two QBs from the beginning. An open competition would only stunt the chemistry of the skilled positions with the QB if reps are equally shared. Should McCoy get a handfull of reps with the starters? Yes, just so he has some timing with them in case Weeden goes down. Give Weeden the next couple of years to see if he's our guy and give him a valid shot. If he isn't and McCoy's flaws are due to a lack of talent around him and discomfort with the system, we have a viable backup to replace Weeden if he's another Quinn in year 2. This idea may be flawed, but I have a better feeling with McCoy as our backup than Wallace.

Since 99, browns fans always hold out hope for the back-up because of the horrible starting QB play. 2 -3 bad games as a rookie and people will be calling for BW to be benched in favor of Colt.

seriously, it is time to stick with a guy and not have the last starting qb standing over his shoulder.
We cannot go down this "2 good quarterbacks" road again
I dont think Colt has had a chance to show what he can ultimately be but I am not sure that even if he does it is much more than merely nfl starting material.

I never called for McCoy to start his rookie year, but, I did want Wallace to start of that lame duck Delhomme.
I think that the only QB I never really liked at a point on that list was Quinn.

Keeping Colt around is a great thing from a depth perspective but a terrible idea if we really want to commit to Weeden 100%. He's already under a ton of pressure given that if he doesn't start off guns-a-blazin' he'll be a 30 year old QB next year still in need of development. If he struggles like most rookies do, the team hits a big losing streak and Colt is still on the bench, the QB controversy will rear its ugly head before the end of the season, I can guarantee it.
Honestly, I didn't like the pick but since it's already made, move Colt along and give Weeden a free shot at a controversy-free rookie year.
We're... we're good?

An overlooked fact amongst the faithful.
Like it or not, Randy Lerner doesn't operate with the same blank-check mentality that guys named Snyder and Jones do. I have my own theories as to why we're that way, but that's not for this thread, hehe. When we're willing to save a million bucks here and there and don't care to wade into the free agent market unless we're ready to make a push, having a backup, veteran QB who makes 1/5 of the other backup, veteran QB is a huge factor.
Besides, count me as one of a minority who feel that you can't force Weeden into the starting lineup just because he's older. To me, that's almost idiotic. You start weeden as a rookie if he's READY, not because he's OLD. If he isn't ready, you can't force him or you've just crapped away the 22nd pick in the 2012 draft.
As for McCoy being a distraction or causing lines to be drawn if he's still on the roster, I call it bogus. First and foremost, while a likable guy and now a sympathetic figure, there are very few around the league who are sticking to the guns that McCoy is going to be a good starter. You can be damned sure the receivers on the Browns are licking their lips at the thought of having Weeden back there. People like McCoy, but they don't believe in him. Sure, some locals in Austin and some in Northern Ohio do, but Homerism is what it is. He had his crack at stardom and couldn't beat the odds. Something I'd talked about when we drafted him is coming into play, which is that you can get a shot if you're taken that late in the draft as a QB, but you aren't going to get the same time a 1st round pick got. He really got his shot when the Browns of all teams drafted him. No other team was going to be stOOpid enough to anoint him the QB of the future. He got a break here that he wasn't getting anywhere else. There's no reason to rock the boat if you're McCoy. Besides, Cleveland is a great situation for a guy in his position. Weeden is such an unknown that he could easily fail and fail quickly, so the next guy better know the offense and know the players. No QB's know those things like McCoy and Wallace.
Now the moral thing to do might be to let him go so he can find, perhaps, a starting gig. However, time will tell if that plays a factor.
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

Except that his age pretty much forces you to because the decision clock on him is ALREADY ticking. If he doesn't start this year, he'll be turning 30 during next season. No one and I mean no one is going to give a long leash to a 30 year old, regardless of his draft status. If he sits a year and then comes in and bombs in his 2nd, he's just about a goner after only 1 season of playing which is a terrible waste of a pick. Our front office took him with the expectation he can start and play well. He needs to be given the chance and if he can't, they need to make the decision whether to keep moving forward with him or move on to the next if they can draft a stud. Regardless, they need to find out ASAP.
I'm still of the opinion that if Weeden stinks to high heaven and sends us into position to get another QB, we could end up going Clausen on him and drafting a replacement. I'm hoping it doesn't come to that because again, the waste would be ridiculous, but I'm not naive enough to assume it's impossible for him to struggle (he IS a true rookie after all).
Of course, this is the problem with taking a 28-29 year old rookie in the first place but hey, what do we know?
We're... we're good?

There is always the possibility that Weeden looks like Akili Smith, or Jamarcus Russell.
They would be wise to keep McCoy and Hardesty. Whoever is on the field on a given play, He is the starter.
So maybe they give Weeden 3 years and if he's not that great, well in 3 years how old will McCoy be? 28?
I'll say one thing. No way do you release Mccoy and only get a 7th. I said it before he's worth 3 3rd rounders? How much is that anyway?
They got more for Brady Quinn. McCoy isn't any worse than Quinn was at that time. What did they get for Anderson? What did they get for Frye?
When was the last time the Starting quarterback on the Browns actually had to beat out another option to gain the starting role, and not have it handed to him?
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

How is Colt McCoy worth a 3rd round pick?
What has he accomplished to warrant that kind of value?
What team would give up a 3rd rounder for him, and why?
He is a limited QB who might, possibly, be able to handle a run heavy offense with a few really safe throws as a backup. Is that worth a 3rd rounder? To whom?

There won't be a QB competition because it in itself would slow down the learning process of Weeden.
In a competition, you'd likely split the snaps 50/50
If Weeden doesn't get 100% of the snaps with the first team offense to get some chemistry and timing down, then I don't know what our thought process is...
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

I agree.
I think that Weeden will get a massive amount of work, and will be force fed the offense. Colt McCoy will be throwing to guys like Rod Windsor and, ironically enough, Josh Cooper, while Weeden is throwing to Little, and Massaquoi, and Benjamin, and Cribbs.

If colt is the backup, he will see playing time this year. With Weeden's lack of mobility it's probibly just a matter of time.
No matter how this plays out, the walrus and heckert look bad because they either wasted a 3rd round pick, 1st round pick, or in higher likelyhood than we would like to admit, both.
Ruining QB's since 1999.

Agreed !...Weeden is far from a sure thing....Couch & Quinn are clear examples of our failures at QB in the 1st Rd....IF McCoy can beat him out he should be our Starter....With our Luck at QB neither may turn out to be worthy of starting.
