SOUTH BEND — Notre Dame football players Tommy Rees and Carlo Calabrese were arrested early Thursday as police officers were trying to break up an off-campus house party, according to various media reports.

The Chicago Tribune reported on its website that South Bend police responded to a call of a loud party at around 12:30 a.m. on Notre Dame Avenue. Five or six people hopped a fence and ran from officers, Capt. Phil Trent of the South Bend Police Department told the Tribune. Rees was among those who ran.

Trent said Rees “actively resisted” and was subdued with pepper spray.

Rees is facing preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, battery to law enforcement, minor consumption and public intoxication, according to television station WNDU.

Calabrese was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct. He was released from jail after posting bond. Rees remains jailed.

Rees, a junior, started at quarterback most of the 2011 season and is a contender to be a starter this season. Calabrese is a senior linebacker.

Football coach Brian Kelly had no immediate comment, a university spokesman told the Tribune.

It's probably something to laugh off because EVERY college kid is at loud parties with booze. However, if you're a football player for Notre Dame, you can't be running from cops and resisting arrest. That will make national news and people will be upset. If you're playing football for Southern State Academy Tech in South Dakota....NODBOY will care. If it's Notre Dame, you've got trouble.

What Rees has working against him is that he's a horrible QB.

He'll probably get kicked out of school, but if he was a good player like Michael Floyd who got a DUI which was his 3rd alcohol-related incident at ND, it's all good, see you on the field, Michael.

The headline should read "Notre Dame QB caught from behind by aging donut eating cop wearing 20 pounds of gear"

Well, to be fair, Rees was really, really drunk too. Does that help out his excuse?
