It may be a little early, but I doubt we'll see any DRASTIC change in the shape of the Browns from now till Week 1 (Barring a QB going down and someone throwing us a pick for Wallace/McCoy)
So what do you think will be the Browns 53 man Roster?
QB Brandon Weeden Colt McCoy Seneca Wallace
RB Trent Richardson Montario Hardesty Brandon Jackson
FB Owen Marecic Brad Smelly
WR Greg Little Mohamed Massaquoi Josh Cribbs Travis Benjamin Jordan Norwood Carlton Mitchell
TE Ben Watson Evan Moore Jordan Cameron Dan Gronkowski
OL Joe Thomas Jason Pinkston Alex Mack Shawn Lauvao Mitchell Schwartz Ryan Miller Oniel Cousins John Graco Christian Yount
DE: Jabal Sheard Frostee Rucker Juqua Parker John Hughes Marcus Benard
DT: Ahtyba Rubin Phil Taylor Billy Winn Brian Schaefering
OLB: D'Qwell Jackson Chris Gocong James Michael-Johnson Kaluka Maiava Emmanuel Acho Scott Fujita
CB: Joe Haden Sheldon Brown Dimitri Patterson Trevin Wade Buster Skrine
S: TJ Ward Usama Young Eric Hagg Ray Ventrone
K: Phil Dawson P: Reggie Hodges

Wow it's way early ..... Anyway ..... QB: Weeden, Wallace, Lewis FB:Marecic HB: Smelly RB: Richardson, Jackson, Smith TE: Watson, Smith, Cameron WR: Cribbs, Massqaquoi, Little, Benjamin, Norwood, Mitchell OL: Thomas, Pinkston, Mack. Lauvoa, Schwartz, Miller, Greco, Cousins P: Lanning K: Dawson LS: Yount DL: Sheard, Rubin, Taylor, Rucker, Parker, Hughes, Wynn, Schaefering LB: Gocong, Maiava, Jackson, Johnson, Acho, Fujita, DB: Haden, Patterson, Skrine, Dockery, Ward, Young, Bademosi, Hagg, Wade I decided to let all of the draft picks make the team until I see any reason not to. I cannot see McCoy being happy as the backup. I think that Smith may get another chance to be the pure sped back we have been looking for. This could be the year time runs out on veterans like Sheldon Brown, Ray Ventrone, Evan Moore, and maybe even Fujita if one of the rooks does a good job while he's out on suspension. This isn't a hard defense for LB to learn, so they should be able to let their talent show pretty quickly. I think that Moore gets bumped in favor of Smelley. Better blocker, and can play both TE and FB. Hardesty runs out of time. The 2 main backs will be Richardson and Jackson. Smith can play a couple of specialty spots for the time being. Hardesty just doesn't have a spot. I am worried about Hodges since the Browns claimed a Punter off waivers. Usually a team just goes and signed a camp body if they want a guy just to keep someone's leg fresh. I hope that Hodges can come back because he did a nice job of dropping punts inside the 20. This entire roster is subject to change on the first OTA and beyond.

Re-watching my list I really would like to get Steiny back for depth and/or competition at G...OL depth is real thin....Cousins should barely be a no 8/9 OL, he's our 6/7 right now...and those guys always have to play at some point....EDIT: I forgot Miller, so forget Steiny and Shugarts...
Colt is done in CLE, dont care what Holmy says...actions speak louder than words, he has to keep his "value" somewhat alive...we will deal him for a pick or maybe a vet WR....there are plenty of teams with 6-8 deep NFL talent WR

Unless we're bringing Fujita back as more of a Coach/Player to help the rookies, I have no idea why he's still even on the team.

we have both still..
I'm still not sure if I care for Maiava.. He hasn't shown me much. I actually prefer Titus Brown over him.

I wouldn't be surprised if they expect JMJ as wolb and backup MLB. I think solb and mlb are better fits for him, but maiava has got to go and gocong probably remains a starter. I'd love to see jmj and acho assert themselves as starters outside. Nobody thinks the lb from notre dame that played well last preseason will make it?

Cleve - just fyi, that LB from notre dame was cut yesterday or Tuesday; Brian Smith, so nope, don't think he will make it.
Quick 53... (hopefully no injuries and this is it) QB - Weeden, McCoy, Wallace RB - Richardson, Hardesty, B.Jackson FB - Marecic, Smelley TE - Watson, Moore, Cameron WR -Massaquoi, Little, Norwood, Cribbs, Benjamin OL - Thomas, Pinkston, Mack, Lauvao, Schwartz, Cousins, Greco, Miller, Gerhard
DL - Sheard, Rucker, Taylor, Rubin, Parker, Winn, Hughes, Paxson LB - Gocong, Jackson, JMJ, Acho, Maiava, Jacobs, Spears (until Fujita's suspension is either over, or reduced). DB - Haden, Brown, Patterson, Skrine, Dockery, Ward, Young, Haag, Wade, Bademosi
ST - Dawson, Hodges, Yount

lol thanks... i missed that. My wife had our baby on Monday afternoon after a 34 1/2 hour unmedicated labor, so I haven't been able to keep up.
Here's my guess:
(3) QB: Weeden, Wallace, McCoy (and only because McCoy is cheap. I could see them keeping someone else just to avoid the controversy) (3) RB: Richardson, Jackson, Smith (after Hardesty has some kind of tweak in TC that sets Shurmur off) (1) FB: Smelley (5) WR: Little, Benjamin, Norwood, Cribbs, Massaquoi (for lack of a better option) (4) TE: Watson, Moore, Smith, Cameron (8) OL: Thomas, Pinkston, Mack, Lauvao, Schwartz, Greco, Cousins, Miller
(5) DE: Sheard, Rucker, Parker, Benard, Stephens (5) DT: Rubin, Taylor, Hughes, Paxson, Winn (6) LB: Gocong, Jackson, JMJ, Acho, Maiava, Spears (6) CB: Haden, Patterson, Skrine, Wade, Brown, Dockery (4) S: Ward, Young, Bademosi, Hagg
(3) Specialists: Dawson, Hodges, Yount
Practice Squad: WR Saffold WR Cooper OL Gerhart CB Davis DE English LB Sweat FA Cut FA Cut

Wah! Wah! Wah!

Totally kidding, just couldn't resist. CONGRATS!!!
Yeah I based my 53 on no injuries, no trades assumption, and you know what they say about doing that.

Obviously this is a really early guess and there's always changes after final cuts are made and we snag a couple guys but here it goes.
OFFENSE (27)
QB (3) - Brandon Weeden, Colt McCoy, Thad Lewis RB (3) - Trent Richardson, Montario Hardesty, Brandon Jackson FB/HB (2) - Owen Marecic, Brad Smelley WR (6) - Greg Little, Mohamed Massaquoi, Josh Cribbs, Travis Benjamin, Jordan Norwood, Carlton Mitchell TE (4) - Ben Watson, Evan Moore, Jordan Cameron, Alex Smith OT (3) - Joe Thomas, Mitchell Schwartz, Oniel Cousins OG (4) - Jason Pinkston, Shawn Lauvao, John Greco, Ryan Miller C (2) Alex Mack, Garth Gerhart
DEFENSE (23)
DE (4) - Jabaal Sheard, Frostee Rucker, Juqua Parker, Marcus Benard DT (4*) - Ahtyba Rubin, *Phil Taylor (PUP), John Hughes, Billy Winn, Brian Schaefering LB (5*) - D'Qwell Jackson, *Scott Fujita (SUS), Chris Gocong, Kaluka Maiava, James-Michael Johnson, Emmanuel Acho CB (6) - Joe Haden, Sheldon Brown, Dmitri Patterson, Buster Skrine, James Dockery, Trevin Wade S (4) - T.J. Ward, Usama Young, Eric Hagg, Ray Ventrone
SPECIAL TEAMS (3)
K - Phil Dawson P - Reggie Hodges LS - Christian Yount
Notable Practice Squad: Josh Cooper, Darron Thomas, L.J. Fort
When Fujita/Taylor (hopefully) come back, I'd probably make a cut from offense to even things out a bit. There's definitely some areas that can be improved after final cuts.
We're... we're good?

Titus Brown is not on our roster, so at this time he has zero chance to make the team. He was a restricted FA this off-season and we did not tender him, so he is out there for anyone to sign, so it is unlikely he makes our roster without a contract.

I like your list...so I will pick at it rather than create my own.
I'd rather have Armond Smith than Hardesty or Jackson. BOTH of those guys (H & J) are injury risks...otherwise, I could see us start the year with 4 RBs and that position be the cut when/if Taylor comes back;
I don't think Mitchell will make the team if he's "projected" as the 6th WR...he's been a project long enough...he better be better than the 6th guy to stick or somewone else gets a shot;
One of those (4) TEs will be cut...I don't know which one. If we like Smelley and Marecic both...then one of last years TEs has to go.
I'm still hoping Steinbach returns...not sure who to cut to bring him back tho;
I think Winn is going to play DE...that...and I don't think Benard is the right type of DE, makes me think Benard is out;
I think Fujita is d-o-n-e;
We better upgrade Ventrone...I like the guy and the fire...but we need to keep guys who may develop into positional players. A 5 yr vet who can't play other than STs is a luxury we cannot afford.
I'm hoping a guy like Saffold beats out Mitchell and Bademosi (sp?) beats out Ventrone.

But he is a great special teamer. As long as whoever replaces him is great on teams, fine, but if not, I'd rather have good teams than a slighter better 5th string DB.

I've never seen Hardesty or Jackson do anything to garner my faith either...and I can't think of anything either of them bring to the table that's better than the potential of Smith.
For me, it's a combination of Smith's ridiculous speed and the ho-hum feeling I get from watching Hardesty run the ball.

I kinda agree w/ ya..
at least you saw a glimpse of what Smith can bring in pre-season. His fumbles killed his opportunity to see more action in regular season though.
Hardesty however hasn't showed me much of anything CLOSE to his highlights at Tennessee.. It's like he's a completely different person.

Hardesty was looking good in preseason against the Rams right up until he blew his knee out again. Since that moment, he hasn't shown enough to hold down a roster spot. He has no burst, bad hands, poor vision and just doesn't seem like he has NFL talent.
Armond Smith could beat out Jackson for the 3rd down back. Turf toe on a running back is really bad but on a speed back, I just can't see him holding up with all the planting and driving and quick change of directions.

I think your spot on with Hardesty. I feel bad for the guy, but I just don't see anything there.
I think Jackson makes the team for sure.
TRich, Jackson, Armond.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

While I agree with most on Hardesty, that he hasn't been all that impressive, he did blow out that ACL in 10' and 'they say' it takes a year of playing on it (after rehab) to be fully healed and back to 100%. So while I don't have high expectations, I want to wait and see how he does this TC and preseason before totally writing him off.

Agree...I think he could surprise a lot of us...we obviously moved on from him but he's a nice wildcard to have right now. Maybe he needed last season to mentally get over the knee stuff too, not only physically...the TR selection sure got his attention, so we will see the best Hardesty has left...he's playing for his career this season and he knows it's his last chance....another injury or half-half effort will get him cut....haven't given him up totally but it's good to know that we don't rely on him anymore...he can only ADD, not damage any value from the RB position

Here's the thing about that. There's no reason they all can't make the roster.
Really, going into last year, I thought Hardesty played like a receiver anyway, an if they consider him a wideout, it would make the Rb shakeup a little clearer.
Just considering off skilled positions. ( guys I like) Well marecic showed some things and is Fullback, they need a fullback. IF they consider " Smelley" a TE, and just rotate him into the final TE slot competition, then you can keep Marecic
Trent Richardson (probably #1 rb,) you keep a 2nd Ogonnaya, ( he is backup to Trent.) You have the " other runninback," Brandon Jackson, the #1, and his backup Armond Smith, So 5 runningbacks. inclucing Marecic the lone Fb
so what does that do to TE, well Watson is clear#1, Evan Moore is #2, then from last year, Alex Smith, He's the #1 blocker for blocker role, then you keep 1 or 2 more, and the guys I like, Smelley, and Dan Gronkowski, and Jordan Cameron, ... And I would cut Cameron, ( unless there's something there yet to be seen).
What does that do to Wr,, Well ( based on 2011 production =2012 projection ) a depth chart from games over 40 ish yards per player, our Wideouts from my perspective are Little #1, Cribbs #2, Watson,#3a, ( in there but will get the te spot) so Massaquoi 3, then Norwood, Hardesty, and T. Benjamin, coming off the bench. Rod Windsor and Carlton Mitchell were both on the roster all of 2011 and I would cut both.a Unless Windsor is absolutly irreplaceable for some special teams reason that I'm unaware of.
This Cooper, player the #2 wr from Ok st, is practice squad eligible, while Armond Smith is not a first year player so is not.
So except for Carlton Mitchell, Rod Windsor, and Jordan Cameron, everyone else can stay. Including Dan Gronkowski, ( Roster battle, Cameron and Gronkowski.).
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

The backups on offensive line.
The Backups on offensive line, I would think would be.
Grecco, Pinkston or Miller, Oneil Cousins, and Gerhart maybe. Pinkston or Miller, I think one will start at guard.

fair enough. I just can't get over the fact that he was on a team absolutely begging for someone, anyone to give production out of the RB spot and he only managed to get 3 carries for 2 yards on the entire season.

My biggest dislike for Hardesty is this: when you were young learning how to play football what was one of the first things you were taught when running the football, DO NOT turn your back into the tackle, and Hardesty does it time after time!!!

Well as of April 17th he was participating in the Browns offseason program.. Quote:
BROWNS: Defensive end Marcus Benard participated in the start of the team's offseason program. He missed all but four games last year after breaking his hand in a motorcycle accident. "He looks actually good. I'm hoping to see the best of Marcus," Shurmur said, via the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "I've seen him a couple of times through the off-season and he was there [Monday]. I didn't get a chance to watch in the weight room. I'm not allowed to be in there yet, but from what I heard, he performed well." Shurmur indicated the team plans to keep Benard at defensive end and not move him to linebacker. Hensley's slant: Benard's recovery is key to the Browns' pass rush. They lack edge rushers and Bernard is a year removed from producing 7.5 sacks.
ESPN
But last I heard we didn't Tag him with anything, and I haven't found anything on us signing him so..?

Due to the nature of his injury we did not have to tender him, and we were able to keep him under his contract and the last year of that deal. I believe it had to do with the fact he was not available for at minimum 10 games, which would have accrued his contract year. Reason is that his injury was not football related, riding a motorcycle.
There is a thread somewhere in here with the article, the Browns announced it sometime around the beginning of FA.
I'm looking for it, but there are a lot of results returned in the 1st search I did.
And here it is, the PD article...

IIRC, Because of the situation with his off the field injury last year he lost a vested year, and remained property of the Browns this year ..... and under the terms of his former deal.

Quote from Rotoworld:
Browns GM Tom Heckert revealed Thursday that Benard's 2011 salary was "tolled" to 2012 because he spent the majority of last season on the reserve/non-football injury list.

I wasn't counting on Bernard at all, after reading the Browns would not tender him. Even if he comes back healthy, is he good enough to earn a roster spot? I think it's 50/50 because of the number of options the Browns have in the defensvie front 7.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.
