127pitches (acta gave him a long leash)
22 GBs
5 FBs
forced 4 GIDP

I know it's the Twins, but that is still impressive for the old guy.

Yup.

Thinking back...how many 38-year olds in the last decade have thrown a complete-game shutout? Not too many, that's for sure.

Only thing to fear now is how his old arm is going to recover. During a game it's been a working theory that sinker-baller's prefer to work deeper into games, as a slight drop in velocity means greater sink on the sinker. However, if you extend an old arm too far, it loses command the next start. I hope stretching him out like that doesn't have any lingering effects, because let's be honest with ourselves...Where would this team be without Derek Freakin' Lowe of all people sporting a 6-1 with an ERA of 2?

You mean we're actually coming out ahead on a deal for once?!

it's actually one of my favorite type of deals. trading for a veteran who had a 'down' year yet his peripherals suggest that he was just unlucky and is due for a bounceback.

couple that with the previous team so desperate to get out from his contract that they give you a big discount and it's a pretty low risk manuever.

I know that. But don't you think Mauer would waive it in order to win some games? A team like the Dodgers could probably absorb that whole contract and he could catch and play first.

From what I understand, he has already refused to play certain positions ..... so why would he do so elsewhere?

There was an article about him not wanting to play other positions or DH when they wanted him to.

Plus, he's home, and he has a complete no trade clause.

he doesn't want to be a fulltime 1B/DH, which is one thing they approached him about. he wants to be a C first.

Well, it's the Mariners.

Nice to see the bats explode, regardless of the opposition.

It looks like Ubaldo is done for the night. 6IP, 3ER, 5H, 2BB & 4K. That's a quality start.

A quality start is a statistic for a starting pitcher defined as a game in which the pitcher completes at least six innings and permits no more than three earned runs.

Now, that's good but there are many factors to help and hurt that too.

- Let's say Acta left him in to eat a few more innings to save the bullpen and ended up giving a meaningless run in the 8th while we're up 6 runs. That takes the QS away.
- Let's say the opposing pitcher gave up 2ERs over 9IP. Ubaldo would get the loss even though he had a QS.
- Or a guy goes 5 2/3 and with no ERs in a game where you have the lead 1-0. The manager takes him out cause the bases are loaded and the homerun leader is coming up. The bulley holds the lead and he doesn't get a QS.

Either way, I'm looking at the W-L record before I'm looking at QS, ERA, batting average, WAR or anything else. And right now, we're in first.

I know you're kind of joking, because the red sox are only 2 games under .500 and are loaded with talent. I think they'll be contending for one of the wild card spots by the end of the year.

Man, if the O's can keep it up....that division is going to be impossible to play. They'll eventually beat each other up but I could bet a mortgage payment that both wild card spots will come from the AL East.

Todd Frazier showing some much needed power from the right side. Please don't let this be a mirage.

Chapman time!

Chapman has K'd 34 of the 70 batters he's faced this year.

...speaking of bottom feeders, the Tigers just got beat by the Twins at home (11-7). That puts the TIgers 1 game under .500 and 3 games back of the 1st place Tribe.

Hey. Hey. Hey. Don't go messing this up now.

Offense sucks, pitching stinks, defense looks like 3rd graders... There, we should be ok now.

the Red Sox have about $80mil of that talent on the DL right now. Sure, they still have $100mil playing, but they are severely lacking in a bunch of spots right now. if they become contenders in that tough division, it'll be because they get healthy.

i'm confused. we played against Felix Hernandez. that's some nice opposition to see the bats explode.

also, I love the move of Choo to leadoff. he's still getting on base well (high OBP), but his SLG% has been terrible for 2 years now. getting him in a spot to use his speed and help set the table for our other guys is smart and it's working so far.

That's one thing I really really like about Manny, he's flexible, he seems about trying different things (although he waited too long with Sizemore at leadoff last year)

Wedge, although I liked him, never wanted to change a thing. He was all about waking up the same day with pretty much the same lineup, and he was going to bring in X pitcher when Y batter was up, etc..

Why put in Perez in non-save situations? Good we got out of that.

Division Series moves to 2-3 format
Updated: May 17, 2012, 3:45 PM ET
ESPN.com news services

NEW YORK -- Baseball's owners have approved changing the format of this year's AL and NL Division Series from a 2-2-1 format to a 2-3 format, giving the team with home-field advantage the last three games of the five-game series.

The change, approved by owners on Thursday, was made to accommodate baseball's new one-game wild-card playoff round. The new round of playoffs was added after schedules were set with the regular season ending Oct. 3 and the World Series starting Oct. 24.

Teams with home-field advantage will host Games 3, 4, and 5, eliminating one travel day, and the wild-card playoff winners will start the Division Series at home.

Baseball could revert back to a 2-2-1 format in 2013, when the regular season is tentatively set to start on April 1, with a Sunday night game possible the previous day. Baseball is shifting from the midweek start it used in 2011 and 2012.

The 2-2-1 format has been used in the divisional round since 1998.

Baseball also announced its new one-game wild-card playoffs will be televised Oct. 5 by TBS and that two division series games will shift from TBS to the MLB Network under a deal running through 2013. TBS Sports president David Levy said a rights fee was involved.

The two division series games will be available in more than 30 million fewer homes on MLB Network than on TBS -- that includes some hometown fans of the teams playing.

ESPN

It just seems silly to me that a team with "Home Field Advantage" has to start on the road, But I assume it won't stay that way...

What I have a Problem with...

don't worry too much about the hometown teams. I fully suspect that those games will be free on MLB.tv for everyone. or perhaps they grant permissions for the local broadcaster to show the games too.

We suck. We'll be lucky to win another game all year long. This team cannot hit with the game on the line, and the bullpen stinks.
