On almost every play he looks at 1 target and then fires. When he has to look at a second target the results are bad.
at 0:01 low throw resulting in INC. at 0:58 bad incomplete at 1:10 interception throwing to a blanketed WR.
I know that Weeden played in a simple, one-read offense that tried to get one man open and have the QB look at primary target first and foremost. So its not like Weeden was asked to read coverages. If he wasnt ever successful finding the open man among several targets, because he was never asked to, why would the Browns think he will be successful doing it at the pro level? It's like we just drafted a 28 year old project
Watch Weeden's head when he gets the ball. On every play other than 3 in the entire game, Weeden only looks at one target before delivering the ball. When he does have to look at a secondary target, because his primary is blanketed, he makes bad decisions. At 2:05 he throws a near pick after having to go to his secondary target. And at 6:06 he takes a bad sack after having to go to his secondary target.
And this pattern is consistent in all of the games that I have watched. Watch him against Iowa St.
he was terrible in this game. stepping out of the back of the endzone by mistake ended up helping him (he threw an INT returned for a TD). had 3 other easy INTs dropped.
I hate Candy for posting this video. It was this game (actual game not just the youtube) that completely turned me off to Weeden and I need to not look at it again so I can get excited for the Browns season.
I pretty much agree. When he gets the snap, most of his throws are to his first read - open or not.
I don't see the stellar accuracy he's lauded for either.
At 6:20 or so, you can see what he looks like when he takes his eyes off his first read. (he turned his head to fake a handoff - then he couldn't find his first read)
Hey, the guy had success in college - no doubt about that. Perhaps he's "Bernie-esque" in his ability to read a d prior to the snap.
Perhaps he'll be able to easily adjust to looking off a receiver in the pros.
All I know is the Browns eggs are in Weeden's basket right now. I wish him the best.
However, as far as making a read and quickly throwing the ball, that's the basis of the WCO.
There is a tree on each play ..... with different reads depending on zone or man cover on the outside. If there is man to the outside, then the that receiver becomes read #1. If it's zone, then the other receivers become becomes reads 1-3. The whole idea is to get the ball out quickly and decisively.
I have seen nothing out of Weeden that tells me that he won't be able to be successful in the WCO. He is adept at throwing to a player, or throwing to a spot. he has anticipation , and can lead a receiver. He is able to make a throw before the receiver makes his break. He is accurate.
He had a rough game against Texas, and he made some stupid plays. That happens. I'll be stunned if he doesn't have a stinker of a game here or there in Cleveland too. Rookie QBs usually do have one once in a while. That being said, I still expect him to be an upgrade at the QB position.

There probably isn't one guy whose ever played QB,, HS, College or the Pros that didn't have a bad game. this was Weedens. doesn't sound like a sound way of looking at anyone.
His overall body of work is way way more impressive. And that should tell you more about a guy than one game.

Absolutely, positively, unequivocally correct.

Problem is, his overall body of work still screams "catch the snap and throw it to the first guy.".
We'll see how that pans out in the nfl.....OR we'll see if he can adapt. I'm hoping for the latter.
Even in this game as bad as he was, Weeden never allowed the mistakes to rattle him and he kept going for it. That is a hell of a quality to have in your QB. The good ones never let it get to them.

I don't know how many times I've seen Tom Brady have a less then stellar 1st half or more, only to turn it on in crunch time and get the 'W'.
In fact that's a quality that most every HOF type QB has. Peyton Manning is more so an exception to the rule in that he rarely has had a poor game and he has been one of the more consistent QB's who have ever played the game.
I'm not ready to put Weeden in that group, but there is still something to be said for be a winner and coming from behind or from a poorly executed game plan from the onset.
And nologo as your re watching the Baylor contest ... Ask yourself how well did Griffin do under pressure?

This...Even in the Iowa St game many like to forget that he marched his team into FG territory at the end of the 4th Qtr to win it...their K simply missed a 37yd FG

I find it hilarious that the guys that didn't like the pick are searching high and low for a reason to justify their dislike for Weeden.
For the guy bashing the defenses he played against, does that mean that Blackmon only had good stats because the secondaries sucked? It has to be or it is a double standard. While talking about Blackmon, watch his highlights, and you will notice thye ball hitting him in stride, in the numbers, and always very catchable..... .I guess that was because the DBs sucked though
Also, I am sick of the talk about QBs and the spread coming to the NFL.......what QB in college is not running the spread? Heck, Brady is in the shotgun almost all the time.
I have no idea if the guy is going to be good, but much of the same crap was said about Newton. RG3 has to adapt to, but many think he is superhuman, I can see him struggling just as the others do.
Weeden is here, and the staff thinks he can handle it. Maybe he will maybe he won't. But for all the bashing he gets from his distractors, I say this......McCoy was a superstar in college, that means nothing now. Time will tell, but it just feels like many are just hoping he fails, just as many did with McCoy, just so they can feel good about themselves, as if they know more than the professionals.
Sometimes I read some posts and really believe that the posters actually think guys like Heckert and Holmgren do things to intentionally to hurt the team. When in fact that is ludicrous. These guys have forgotten more than most of us will ever know. You don't get to their level being an idiot, even though many think they are

Catch the snap and throw it to the first guy.. well, if thats what he did in college, he was damned successful at it.. so we'll see.

I think Weeden is going to show everyone why he is going to be our starter from day one. McCoy is a good kid, and has potential to be a spot starter/backup but just doesnt have the tools to be a full-time guy IMO.
Cant wait for some video clips of them orange helmets running around, and some pressers.....GO BROWNS!!!
It would be great if Hagg stepped up and became an above-average starting safety. It says something that he is taking the first team reps over Usama Young.
WR Mitchell shows he has talent, needs to up production by Marty Gitlin, CBSSports.com
Third-year WR Carlton Mitchell got open three times for medium-range receptions early in the first day of OTAs on Tuesday. Mitchell's raw talent has exceeded his production so far in his career. The Browns would benefit greatly if he emerges as a contributor.

Rookie WR Travis Benjamin showed off his speed in passing drills. He began an identical route at the same time as Josh Cribbs and caught the ball five yards further downfield. The fourth-round pick is easily the fastest WR on the team, but must show skills as a route-runner to earn playing time.

Some good stuff in there. Would love to see Carlton Mitchell turn it on. Year 3 is usually make or break for receivers. The guy is putting in the work and you have to root for a guy like that.
Cousins in there over Swartz is a waste. I know that is how these guys do it but it is still a waste.
Well, I'm sure that all the rookies' heads are absolutely spinning with all the stuff that's getting thrown at them. Maybe the coaching staff is just trying to take it kind of slowly and let these guys get their feet wet a little bit.
Come training camp, I expect to see our rookies out there starting (or close to it).

Actually, no - it really doesn't say much because Young really isn't all that great. JMO, but that's how I see it.

Mitchell is definitely in a make-or-break year. He either pans out or has to be show the door this season.
As for the rookies and Schwartz - not a waste at all. For one, it is Day 1 of the first OTA. The rookies haven't earned a damned thing yet, so why should they be handed anything on a platter?

Quote: Wouldn't it be great that the terrible Young isn't on the field?
What'd be great is if we field a set of starters that deserve to be starting and not guys that are starting simply because we couldn't yet find anyone better. Once we get to that level at all 22 starting positions, then we've got something going.

The great teams have key positions filled with elite level guys, and then have guys who are 'good enough" around them.
A team with a great, dominating pass rush might not need the best CB in the league to be successful. A team like the Pats gets by with decent WRs and OK RBs because they have a great QB, and excellent TE play. Other teams might have 3 solid OL with a couple of fair level guys but get by because the QB gets the ball out immediately, like Manning did in Indy.
I think that the key for most NFL teams is to wind up with great players at a few key spots, and then fill the rest of the team with average to above average players.

General Manager Tom Heckert said Monday night the Browns “fully expect” rookie Brandon Weeden to win the starting quarterback job, but the team showed respect to incumbent starter Colt McCoy today by allowing him to take the snaps with the first-team offense throughout practice. Weeden was next in line, followed by Seneca Wallace.
“It’s easy to look out there and say, ‘This guy’s doing this. He must be the starter. He must be the backup,’” Browns coach Pat Shurmur said. “There were a lot of combinations out there today, and I think what’s important is in some of the areas we’ve touched on all winter, we’re watching guys compete. I wouldn’t say we’re deferring to anybody at this point.”
McCoy’s take
McCoy met with reporters following practice and expressed his feelings about the Browns drafting Weeden 22nd overall last month.
“It is what it is,” McCoy said. “It happened, and [I’ve] just gotta go out and play, just go compete.
“I’m a competitor, and I’m coming out here every day working as hard as I can. … I just try to come in here consistently positive every day just like I always do. And the rest of the stuff, I just need to focus on what needs to be done, focus on being the best I can be for the Cleveland Browns. If I have that attitude every day, then the right thing will happen.”
McCoy said he has not asked for a trade because the Browns told him he’d have a chance to compete after they drafted Weeden.
“I got a phone call and [they said], ‘Hey, just come in here and compete,’” McCoy said. “As a competitor, that’s all you need to hear, really. You just come in here with your head on right and give it all you have every day.”
McCoy declined to say whether he would ask for a trade if he becomes Weeden’s backup.
“I don’t really deal with hypotheticals,” McCoy said. “I mean right now the only thing that they’ve told me is you can compete for the job. That’s the only thing I think about it. I kind of regard this as a day-by-day thing.”
McCoy said competition is nothing new to him.
“I had to earn my job at [the University of Texas] every year, basically except my senior year,” McCoy said. “I had to earn my job in high school. My dad didn’t start me when I was a freshman. I had to play when I was a sophomore, so I understand the idea. And if it’s a fair competition, then that’s all you can ask for. And regarding what everyone has said, I don’t want this to be a situation where it’s me versus him or him versus me. I want it to be a situation of … what’s gonna help our team the most. Let’s make it about the Cleveland Browns being a great football team next year. And if that’s the case, I’m all in.”
Last month, ESPN reported the Browns told McCoy they wouldn’t draft another quarterback in the first round. The Browns have adamantly denied the report.
“I don’t want to get into the he said, she said stuff,” McCoy said when asked about the report. “All I know is that I’m here. I’m excited to be here.”
When asked if he’s been given a fair shake, McCoy said, “You can’t make any excuses. This is what’s been dealt. This is the card that’s been dealt. I can just say I’m working as hard as I can.”
Weeden’s take
Weeden was asked about Heckert saying the Browns “fully expect” him to become their starting quarterback.
“I think they came and got me in the first round for a reason, but [Heckert] said it best,” Weeden said. “I have to earn that job. They’re not just gonna hand it to me just because of where they took me. I think I’ve gotta go out and compete and show that I belong on the field.
“That’s the mentality I’m taking. It’s not my job. It’s my job to win. I’ve gotta go out and I’ve gotta take it. I’ve gotta be competitive and keep continuing to get better.
“I want to compete. I want to continue to get better. I know I’ve been through this before. I want to go out and win the job. I want to compete and do everything I can.”
Weeden said competing with McCoy and trying to take his job is just a part of the business.
“I don’t think anybody looks at it [as being] awkward,” McCoy said. “This is just part of the business. That’s just the way professional sports work. When I was in baseball, you’re coming in to take somebody’s job. That’s just the way this business works. We’re all in this as one, as a team. We’re worried about each other and us winning games, not who’s gonna be the [starter at] whatever position.”
Scott Fujita speaks
Browns linebacker Scott Fujita spoke to local media for the first time since the NFL suspended him three games for his alleged role in the New Orleans Saints’ bounty scandal. Fujita continued to deny the league’s allegations that he contributed money to a pool that paid players for intentionally hurting opponents.
“I can stand by my previous statements,” Fujita said. “That’s not true.” Fujita has reserved the right to appeal his suspension pending the outcome of the NFL Players Association’s grievances against the league. The union argues that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell does not have the authority to discipline players for the alleged conduct or rule on appeals.
Fujita acknowledged his name could be tarnished if his suspension is upheld.
“My reputation is a lot more valuable to me than three game checks,” Fujita said. “And my track record speaks for itself.
“I’ve done nothing but try to do the right thing throughout my career, try to do positive, impactful things in the communities I’ve worked and played in. And I’ve tried to do right by players in my service to them, especially when it comes to player health and safety. So, yeah, for this to happen, it’s disappointing.”
Fujita sidestepped when asked whether he plans to file a lawsuit against the league. He also paused before answering whether he has evidence to clear his name.
“Right now it’s just my word against theirs, and it’s a tough situation to be in,” Fujita said. “Can I go to bed at night, look myself in the mirror and know what actually happened? Yes. But it’s an uphill battle. Can I got toe-to-toe with the media and all that kind of stuff. It’s a challenging prospect.”
Middle linebacker D’Qwell Jackson said the defense will suffer a blow if Fujita misses the first three games of the season.
“A lot of the guys in the linebacker room can play multiple positions,” Jackson said. “Obviously it will affect us. Losing him last year [because of a broken hand] was a big hit to the defense. But we know we’ll get him at some point. We don’t know the outcome of it right now, but Chris Gocong, myself and Kaluka [Maiava], all the other young guys, we all play multiple positions, so we’ll be able to fill the void for a short time.”
Valuable advice
Jackson, who missed 26 consecutive games from 2009-10 with two torn pectoral muscles, said he spoke to defensive tackle Phil Taylor, who had surgery last Wednesday to repair his torn left pectoral muscle. Taylor’s 2012 season could be in jeopardy, though Heckert said he expects Taylor to be able to play again by late October or early November.
“[I told Taylor to] just stay positive,” Jackson said. “That’s the most important thing. An injury is an injury. You have to go through surgery. But it starts up top. You have to think positively in order to get positive results.”
Attendance
Kicker Phil Dawson did not attend the voluntary practice, but he’ll participate in the mandatory full-squad minicamp June 5-7, Shurmur said. Dawson has already signed his tender as the Browns’ franchise player.
Undrafted rookies Johnson Bademosi, a defensive back from Stanford, and Jeff Shugarts, an offensive lineman from Ohio State, did not attend practice because they’re still in school. Taylor was not at practice because he’s recovering from his recent surgery.
Injury updates
Jackson practiced, but he didn’t participate in team drills because he has a stiff back. The injury prevented him from attending the Akron Browns Backers banquet Monday night, a team spokesman said.
“Just a little stiffness,” Jackson said. “Not anything major, just a little stiffness. They decided to keep me out today. It’s Day 1, so we’ve got a long road ahead. I’ve been through that before. [I’m] smarter about it these days.”
McCoy said he hasn’t experienced any symptoms from the concussion he suffered last December, when Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison used the crown of his helmet to blast McCoy in the face mask.
Defensive tackle Brian Schaefering watched practice from the sidelines today while sitting out with an undisclosed injury.
Contract talk
Weeden said he wants to sign his rookie contract “as soon as possible.” He and running back Trent Richardson, the third overall pick, are the Browns’ only two drafted rookies who have yet to sign.
“I think we know where we stand and what we want,” Weeden said. “I would have signed two weeks ago if I could have. I’m not gonna hold out. We just want what’s fair for me. My agent’s doing that. I haven’t even talked to them about it. Whenever the day comes, I’ll sign the paper and go on about it.”
First-team offense and defense
Here is the first-team offense the Browns used during 11-on-11 drills: McCoy (quarterback); Trent Richardson rotated with Montario Hardesty (running back); Owen Marecic (fullback); Greg Little and Mohamed Massaquoi (wide receivers); Benjamin Watson (tight end); Joe Thomas (left tackle); Jason Pinkston (left guard); Alex Mack (center); Shawn Lauvao (right guard); and Oniel Cousins (right tackle).
Here is the first-team defense the Browns used during 11-on-11 drills: Jabaal Sheard (left end); Ahtyba Rubin and Scott Paxson (tackles); Frostee Rucker (right end); Chris Gocong (weakside linebacker); Benjamin Jacobs (middle linebacker); Fujita (strongside linebacker); Joe Haden and Sheldon Brown (cornerbacks); T.J. Ward (strong safety); and Eric Hagg (free safety). Perhaps the most surprising development was that Hagg worked at free safety with the first-team defense throughout practice, and Usama Young worked in the same spot with the second unit.
“[Hagg] did a nice job last year prior to being injured in camp,” Shurmur said. “And then when he came back [from his knee injury], we felt like he continued to develop. He’s had a nice offseason. We’ll have to go back and watch the tape, but I think he did a nice job today.”
Like Weeden, rookie right tackle Mitchell Schwartz practiced with the second unit even though he’s favored to win the starting job at his position.
Shurmur said other receivers will compete for spots in the rotation, but Little and Massaquoi are penciled in atop the depth chart.
“I would say it’s safe to say those are our first two right now,” Shurmur said.
Extra points
The following players ended last season on injured reserve but practiced today: punter Reggie Hodges (Achilles tendon), defensive end Emmanuel Stephens (strained pectoral), tight end Alex Smith (shoulder), running back Brandon Jackson (toe), Watson (three concussions) and Ward (foot). ... Defensive end Marcus Benard practiced today for the first time since his motorcycle accident last October. He spent most of season on the reserve non-football injury list. He suffered a broken hand and other undisclosed injuries. ... Hardesty wore No. 20 after wearing No. 31 in his previous two seasons. Cornerback James Dockery switched to No. 31 after wearing No. 34 last season.

Cleveland Browns Transcript from news conference with Browns coach Pat Shurmur By Nate Ulrich Published: May 22, 2012
Browns coach Pat Shurmur spoke to reporters today after the team's first practice of organized team activities. Here is a transcript from the news conference:
(Opening statement)- “The first OTA is down. I mentioned to the team, what we are trying to get out of these OTAs is, everybody on this team has things that they do well and other things they don’t do well. You try to fine tune the areas where you have a strength and try to really improve on the things that we need to get better. If each guy does that individually then collectively we get better and essentially become a better team. That’s what we tried to do. I felt like the guys practiced fast. We will try to reload it and do it again tomorrow and Thursday.”
(On if he is deferring to veterans such as Oniel Cousins and Colt McCoy because they took the first snap today)- “It’s easy to look out there and say, ‘This guy is doing this so he must be the starter and he must be the backup.’ There were a lot of combinations out there today and I think what’s important is in some of the areas that we have touched on all winter, we are watching guys compete. I wouldn’t say we are deferring to anybody at this point.”
(On Phil Dawson)- “He is not here right now. He is not here for the OTAs. He will be here for the minicamp.”
(On how the quarterbacks looked)- “I think they did some good things. I think they practiced fast and they made some good throws although there were some errors in there. We will go in there and correct them when we see the tape.”
(On Colt McCoy’s demeanor)- “Colt’s been fine. He’s competing just like the rest of the guys. Colt’s doing fine.”
(On if the dynamic in the quarterback room is different than other positions)- “I have a room full of quarterbacks that are great competitors and very fine players. The room is fine, it’s fine.”
(On if today was Scott Fujita’s first day back with the team)- “Yes, he came in yesterday.”
(On if Fujita will be with the team for the duration of the offseason program)- “He will be here, yeah.”
(On if Darron Thomas, a tryout player from last weekend, was not invited back)- “He didn’t get re-invited back, no.”
(On how Brandon Weeden handled his reads and check downs)- “I thought he handled it well. I thought he was generally efficient. He missed a couple of throws, but I think all of the quarterbacks did. I thought he executed pretty well. As you saw, most of what we did today was under center and I know that is a question that will come up.”
(On Tom Heckert saying yesterday that Sheldon Brown will stay at corner)- “Sheldon is a corner. I think the answer was regarding a question of moving Sheldon to safety, which we are not going to do.”
(On if Phil Taylor could be a candidate for the new rule regarding bringing players off injured reserve)- “I would say based on how I understand that rule, he would be a candidate for that depending on where he is at in his recovery process when we have to make that decision. Phil is doing fine. I have seen him around. He is recovering.”
(On if there is any concern that if having the quarterbacks compete could be disruptive to Weeden’s development)- “No, I am not concerned about any of that because I think they are all out here trying to do the most with the reps that they are getting. This is a game for professionals and they will handle it in a professional way.”
(On how Weeden compares to other rookie quarterbacks that he has worked with)- “He is older than most rookies. I think there is a maturity level that is probably a little greater than some guys that are just coming out fresh. We will talk about that quite a bit. Let’s see him compete for a while then we will try to compare, but he has done a nice job.”
(On why they aren’t considering moving Sheldon Brown to safety)- “Because Sheldon Brown is a corner. He is an outstanding player at corner and to move him to safety is not something that we are planning to do.”
(On if Dimitri Patterson will compete with Brown for the second corner spot)- “Yeah, they are in there competing to start or play in nickel and do all of those things.”
(On if they like the safeties that they have right now)- “We like the group of corners and safeties that we have. We are going to let them practice, improve and compete.”
(On if Eric Hagg has a leg up on Usama Young because he was with the first team today)- “Again in terms of first and second team, I think they are in there getting there reps. Hagg did a nice job last year prior to being injured in camp. Then when he came back, we felt like he continued to develop. He’s had a nice offseason. We will have to go back and watch the tape, but I think he did a nice job today.”
(On if he has addressed the running backs individually on their roles)- "I think all the players, I've mentioned to them that you don't get caught up in how long the lines are. You are in there for a set number of reps and you try to make the most of those reps and play as well as you can. That's what they know and that's the process whether you are playing running back, linebacker or any position. They understand that they are out there competing and trying to do the best they can with the reps they get."
(On how many starting wide receiver spots are up for grabs)- "They are out there playing. I think Greg Little looked really good to me today. I think he has changed his body, he looks much leaner and he was running around well. Mo (Mohamed Massaquoi) did a nice job out there. I would say it's safe to say that they are our first two right now. As you know though, sometimes you play three receivers and sometimes you play four. There are other guys in there and we could go through the whole list if you like, but I think those other guys are competing and doing well as well."
(On what Little has done this offseason)- "I think it's his first true offseason as a pro and I think what he has done is he has taken good care of his body. He is much leaner looking to me than he was when he came into training camp a year ago. I think he has worked on his diet and nutrition, and has gotten himself in shape to come out here and run a lot, which receivers have to do. I think that will help his development."
(On Carlton Mitchell)- "He flashed a little bit today. I thought he did a couple nice things. Like last year, we tried to give him an opportunity to show us what he could do and then he got nicked in training camp. Hopefully, he'll take advantage of this offseason, stay healthy and continue to flash." web page
