Free agent DB Ike Charlton (Patriots) will workout with the Cleveland Browns Monday, March 19.
Free Agent. Cut by the Raiders in September of 2004. Joined the Patriots in February 2005 for the 2005 season. Has spent time with the Seahawks (2000-2001), Jaguars (2002), NY Giants (2003) and the Raiders (2004) where he did not make the final roster cut. Charleton's career stats are: 76 tackles, 2 sacks, with 2 interceptions and 4 forced fumbles. He has been a kick-off return man for the Jaguars with 10 returns for 236 yards and 1 punt return for 0 yards
Draft info..
Ike Charlton | CB | Virginia Tech | Big East Selected by Seattle Seahawks in round 2, pick 21 (#52 overall) Ht Wt 40 BP SS LS VJ BJ Grade 5'11" 205 4.47 16 - - - 10'6" 8.46
Junior eligible. Had a great '99 season. A stocky corner with a muscular build and long arms. Explosive athlete. Physical. Does a good job of getting his hands on receivers. Has quick feet, a good backpedal and a strong break on the ball. Aggressive, but bites on fakes some. Can be a little awkward in his turns, but he runs very well. Closes well on the deep out. Does a good job of getting his head around. Shows good hands -- is a playmaker. Solid tackler who flashes into plays and springs into his hits. Has very good leaping ability. Solid prospect.

I thought Phil said we were done in FA for this year. Another depth signing? Ya know, I heard somebody the other day on a sports show say we're "like the AFC North's version of the Washington Redskins. They try to do everything through Free Agency and end up falling on their face." After seeing this, I'm beginning to agree with that to an extent.

Whoever said that is crazy..we have money to spend we need holes fixed and we're not in a buying spree...totally different than the Redskins trying to sign every big name FA on the market, or can you see that?

I don't see that.
Now it is just building the bottom of the roster.
You don't always have to build the top to make your team better.

No, I did shake my head at the comment at the time. I believe it was one of the guys on the show 'Late Hits' on Sirius NFL Radio. But I don't have a link or anything like that. I don't know. I mean, sure, bring this guy in and if he can do something for us, then sign him. But I think we still need to take a Corner relatively high in the draft to stop the revolving door from spinning in our secondary.

Man it's not like we going to go and sign WR's TE's and RB's in the draft..Phil is trying to target our biggest holes and go to the draft to back those up.. I don't have a problem with this ..

Okay, okay, fine. But images of Ralph Brown and Pete Hunter in Orange & Brown have had disasterous effects on my brain. I'm just tired of peeing my pants and falling down the stairs. Besides, I gave up Lithium for Lent.

Probably.. This kid was a star in the making while in college. Top ten CB talent. I believe he was rated # 2 for all DB's when he came out. Big play potential, blah, blah, blah. Several teams have tried to get him to live up to the potential on a consistant basis but gave up trying in the end.. Who knows..

Training camp blocking dummy signing Vet min. with NO signing bonus would be OK.

The combination of what appears to be an overwhelming amount of raw talent and our fairly well proven defensive backfield coaching staff is at least a bit intriguing.
Little to lose. Lots of upside.
Bring him into camp and sort it out there.

When you throw away your top draft picks for half a decade, you have to catch up somehow.

True, thats why it takes a few year, not overnight to build a contending team,
with even with Phil here running the draft, no GMis gonna hit 100% on every person he drafts, heck if we hit 50% is darn good, Do this 3-4 years in a row and you've added 16 players to your team. so it does take time.

Well, he can return kick-offs, so there is some insurance there is Cribbs goes down. Maybe he can return punts as well, if Perkins does not work out.

That's where the rubber meets the road.
He won't ever live up to that hype. He can't, too much time has passed. He's probably being looked at as a depth player in case we're stuck with Wright as our 2nd corner.
Keep in mind that even though Savage suggested we're done in free agency, he isn't talking about these role-players. He's going to add and subtract peices before and after the draft, but he's done spending big bucks. That was the point.

Opie may see something that Madden does not...............Savage may bring him in for additional help...........and see how that works as time goes on at a cheap price!
I have confidence in Savage..........more so then Madden!

what's the worst that happens... you cut him if he doesn't do anything. no loss there. sign with minimal cap hit and see what you got.

I agree.....now he is going to build the bottom of the roster when and where it makes sense. You don't have to build the top of the roster to strengthen the team.

Well he's doing it.. now we just need back up:
Safety
Get our CB depth chart togethert... Get our defensive line depth chart together... Get our offensive line depth chart together...
That safety spot.. i hope the Browns don't use a draft pick.. It may be a long time to wait.. but when other teams make their 53 man cuts.. im sure someone nice will get cut..

Lots of moves will be made between now and the start of the season. June 1 usually brings a wave of releases of decent to good players....sometimes even real good players.

Not anymore...the new CBA changed that....NFL teams can now cut players and decide if they count as "June 1st cuts"....the players association lobbied for it since the market dried up for those players...that´s also why there already were a lot of cuts (and some "marked" as June cuts btw)
Of course there will be some cuts if a team has to clear cap after FA+draft....but it´s not because of SB-cap hit of "big name players" anymore...so there will be less quality players released June 1st than years past

For the number of years it looks like he's been around, he doesn't have too many numbers.
I think we can do better. As in the draft.

I agree. Everyone acts as if these low end guys are being brought in to start. IMO he signs guys like this with a little experience, brings them into camp to COMPETE. Guys knock the Ralph Browns, but you need backups, and backups are not starting quality players, or the would not be BACKUPS. The revolving door at DB was mentioned, and Phils is signing guys to compete. Not just for starting positions, but for backup positions. I find it funny how many think that drafting a CB in the 2nd is going to automatically going to fill the position with a high quality player. ALL drafted players are unknowns, even the big name guys. This guy was a 2nd round pick and look at his production. Holly was a nobody, but he developed pretty good, not great, but good. Look at Perkins, many were touting how good he was, yet he is cut from the roster. It's all a crapshoot. The probllem I see, is that many are convinced that with 5 or 6 FAs and 7 draft picks, your team will be filled with probowlers. This crap just makes me laugh.

You're right. Emoticon suicide is no laughing matter.
But far more tragic are the little known lazy eye explosions:

And crappercide:

And microwavicide:

But perhaps most disturbing of all is the proliferation of emotimurder:
