Kayla Allen, 10, was under the care of a pediatric team at the home of her extended family when she died "peaceful and serene" at 3:40 p.m. May 15, said an official at the Hospice of the Western Reserve.
STRONGSVILLE- After more than a month of fighting injuries she received after being shot by her father at the Brooklyn Cracker Barrel on April 12, Kayla Allen, 10, died at 3:40 p.m. May 15 at home with extended family, said Jane Van Bergen, director of communications and public relations at the Hospice of the Western Reserve.

“She has been surrounded by family and friends for the past few days, comfortable and serene,” a statement from the family said. “This time has been most meaningful to us as we held her and loved her, prayed for her and said our good-byes.”

Allen was the only member of her immediate family to survive the April 12 Cracker Barrel shooting, when her father, Kevin Allen, walked into the restaurant and shot and killed her mother, Kate, and sister, Kerri, and critically injured Kayla Allen.

Kevin Allen was shot by police outside the restaurant after refusing to drop his shotgun.

Kayla Allen had been in and out of critical condition since the shooting, and was transferred out of MetroHealth Medical Center and into hospice care at her extended family’s home May 11, Van Bergen said.

An outpouring of thoughts, prayers, well-wishes and hope from the community materialized in the Kayla Allen Benefit Fund, which was started by family members to help pay for Kayla Allen’s medical bills and her future expenses.

“The family of Kayla Allen is appreciative and grateful for the support and prayers of so many during this journey,” the statement said. “We have been heartened by the hopes and outpouring of concern of friends as well as strangers and this has given us comfort during a most difficult time.”

The family has not announced future plans for the fund.

The fund’s Facebook page has served as a public notice-board of Allen’s condition, and quickly collected more than 3,500 “likes,” and community members and strangers alike left messages of hope for the family, and to Allen.

“Kayla, in a perfect body, with no pain or sadness, is in heaven with her mother, sister and our Lord Jesus Christ,” the family wrote around 5 p.m. May 15. “Her suffering is over. She is in an eternal paradise.”

Van Bergen said the family plans to have a public memorial service for Allen, but the details are still being worked out.

Why do people have to take their anger out on children. You should love them not harass them. Kids are what brings happiness to a family.

I can't help but think that this was for the better......her life would be so unfair had she come out to find her mother sister and father dead.
