Wow, that is a tough one and would change on a daily basis for me.

All the above, Seen Sabbath 7-8 times with Ozzy, 5-6 times with Dio, enjoyes them all....Ozzy VS Dio things, to me who cares, they both are great in my eyes,
Love Sabbath, still listen to Heaven & Hell and Mob Rules, Love getting out the older Sabbath and letting my kids listen to it,
and for the record, Johnny Blade & Swingen the Chain are pretty good songs.
I consider Sabbath and AC DC to be THE preeminent metal/hard rock bands of all time so picking just 5 songs is like picking only 5 steelers that I hate, but here goes...
Sabbath w/ Ozzy- Faeries Wear Boots Children Of The Grave Snowblind War Pigs Paranoid
Sabbath w/ Dio- Computer God The Mob Rules Heaven And Hell Die Young Neon Nights
Sabbath w/ misc.- The Shining Trashed Danger Zone (slim pickins after Ozzy and Dio so only 3)
My fav Sabbath record is Born Again. Its pretty overlooked cause Gillen went out quick as Purple was reforming. I like Dehumanizer as far as RJD records.. I got a great Sabbath book called "Doom Let Loose"
Cant go wrong with them, great songs, Disturbing the preist is a great song, listening to it, it's really a pretty funny true story,
This next statement I'm gonna make really dosent make sence but anyway, I love Ian Gillan, Love purple, seen them in concert reunion tour, anyway, Him with Sabbath didnt fit me well as he tends to over ryhme every line of a song, I say that as Diop rhymes, light & might in every song he ever wrote, some how when Dio does it, it flows and i dont sence it, when Ian does it it stands out more on a rhyme the words & make'em fit thing, dosent make since what I;m saying but hope you understand
Ozzy IS Sabbath Ozzy WAS Sabbath Without Ozzy it ISN'T Sabbath
Every other vocalist that has sang for Sabbath was nothing but a wannabe Ozzy.
All you need to do is look at the success, or lack there of, between Ozzy and Sabbath after Ozzy left Sabbath. Ozzy is the Godfather of Metal and nobody else can make that claim.

Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler have had a very pivotal role with the band, too. I don't think it's fair to say one guy is the band. All of the singers made giant contributions to the band. Personally, I like the Heaven and Hell album much more than the first two Sabbath CDs. Dio had vocals that could never be matched. That album also had some of the best guitar and bass work, too.
For all of you that suggest that, all you need to do us look at the sales of everything Black Sabbath did without Ozzy, then look at the sales of everything Ozzy did without Black Sabbath.
I played in many bands as a teen ager. Any guitar player who was 14 or 15 could play Tony. Very basic player.
Let's see a basic guitarist who is 14 play Randy or Zakk. Leaving Black Sabbath was the best thing Ozzy ever did and the numbers prove it.
Black Sabbath had to change its entire sound once Ozzy left and the only time they still make any "real money" is when Ozzy agrees to do shows with them!
But Ozzy is a nice guy and goes along with them so they can add to their 401k's.
Say what you will.....The numbers don't lie. The fans followed Ozzy because it was his sound they related to, not the rest of the band.
I went to see the Heaven and Hell tour. I walked out about 30 minutes into it. I always liked Dio until he tried to take Ozzys place in the band. That showed no respect and from that day forward I considered him a sell out.
I'm not a "metal head". I like some music from many genre's. But I do read and have written music. What Ozzy has done since leaving Sabbath is very complicated, far more dynamic and takes a great deal more talent to perform than anything Sabbath ever did. I simply appreciate great talent and between Randy and Zakk, Ozzy surrounded himself with true talent. He is a Miracle Man!

Basic yes..but groundbreaking yes yes yes. My dad turned me on guitar when I was 10...I hated it. Too much work. But it taught me diligence and persistance. My Sabbath song I learned was Hole In the Sky. I think it had 3 main riffs to it. very good song for beginners. I could be wrong I think it went like low C# F# B E G # C#. been 10 years since I played it. Took me 2 weeks to learn it. Iommi really created some great riffs. I was too lazy to try to learn any Blackmore,Uli Jon Roth, Jon Sykes stuff. Ace Frehley,Iommi and Angus Young was good for me.
Oh I agree that when it comes to basic riffs there is no doubt that Tony had an ear for that. Iron Man is a prime example. I sang in my first band at age 15. Here are some examples of what we did.
American Band- Grand Funk War Pigs- Sabbath Too Rollin' Stoned- Trower (probably the hardest one for the guitar player) Sweet Leaf- Sabbath Jumpin' Jack Flash- Stones Smoke On The Water- Deep Purple Trez' Hombre- ZZ Top
Not saying they weren't good songs, just that they were very basic and not complicated at all to play. You don't need to be an accomplished guitarist or singer to do these songs. They are great for beginners and gives them something popular and songs that everyone recognizes and I'm sure it helps inspire them to continue playing and learn even more. A great motivater!
I guess where I may differ from most is in the fact that I look for something more. I look for more than three or four chords. I look for a singer to cover more than one and a half octives in their vocal range. I look for a band to send a message. A message deeper than sex, drugs and rock and roll.
I've seen far too many truely gifted musicians and singers struggle for years to make it in the music business. People who were so very talented and gifted. Who had very important messages and lyrrics in their songs. Some never ever made it.
Then I turn on my radio and hear BS like AC/DC and the hair bands of the 80's playing three chord BS singing about partying, hot chicks and have no real meaning or musical content than the wall in my living room!
So yes, I feel like many populsr bands have the world stage and squander it by spewing basic and meaningless drivel and it irritates me to no end! I just expect a little more both from the standpoint of musical talent and ability, combined with some lyrrical content worthy of sending a message that has some meaning worthy of hearing.
Examples;
Ozzy- Revelation Mother Earth Ozzy- I Don't Know Ozzy- Mr. Crowley Ozzy- Diary of a Madman Ozzy- Dreamer BLS- Bleed For Me BLS- Bridge To Cross BLS- Thirteen Years of Grief BLS- Lost Heaven BLS- Damage Is Done BLS- Time Waits For No One Counting Crows- Round Here/ Perfect Blue Buildings Pearl Jam- Alive Blues Travelers- The Mountains Win Again Staind- It's Been A While
Having the ability to read and write music, the ability (back in the day) to sing over a three octive range, knowing the very talented people who worked so very hard to make it but just never did, I expect those who have made it, who have the oppertunity to send a message of true meaning and a message worth listenning to and learning from to the masses......? They owe it to their fans and our nation as a whole to do that. To hone their skills and talent to a higher standard.
I understand that not everyone agrees with this. I understand that many just want to "feel good" and do not look for the music to be deep and meaningfull. That they don't care about chord patterns and talented complicated lead guitar solos, but I do. And often times the solos don't have to be so complicated so long as they "flow" with the song and add a deminsion that helps you feel the intent of the song.
But that's just me.
Anouk
I simply like music that makes me feel it, that tells me something of value, of emotion and meaning. But we all look for something different in music I guess.......

I like bands that find something they are good at and they don't trick the audience in thinking they are something they are not. I don't mind a band that tries to convey some kind attitude or message. I just irritated when bands get too self absorbed in themselves and forget about just coming out and making good songs aka they take themselves too seriously. Axl Rose has recently done this. music has always appealed to the lowest common denominator. me and my voice teacher would spend hours talking about this. It doesn't take alot of intelligence to listen to rap. I enjoy it. but rap is alot of flash and very little substance. But the 12-25 age group doesn't care. if the beat is good..good enough. but rap has had some artists with some deep thoughts....KRS One, Public Enemy,Ice Cube. But now its just about $$$, chicks, Maserti's. but I guess when you break it down, rock was along the same lines.
