Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
John 14:19 Jesus said: Because I live, you also will live.
The unfortunate thing is that there were some bands from when I grew up who only had a couple of really popular songs. (or songs that anyone would even have heard of)
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

Stevie Ray Vaughan Texas Flood Rude Mood Life by the Drop Little Wing (Cover but amazing anyhow) Look at Little Sister
Parliament Unfunky UFO Bop Gun (Endangered Species) Up for the Down Stroke Wizard of Finance Give up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)
Robert Johnson No particular 5 here. I just love that style, and it's something I strive to be competent in
Sly and the Family Stone Sing a Simple Song Everyday People Thank you (Falettinme be Mice Elf Again) M'Lady Hot Fun in the Summertime
Taking 6...as I have to split the Beatles into Pre/Post Rubber Soul
Early Beatles I Want to Hold Your Hand (Lennon played the CRAP out of this) All My Loving (again with the Rhythm Guitar) I'm Happy to Dance With You (aaand again with Lennon...notice a trend) I've Just Seen a Face Baby's in Black
Mid/Late Beatles Happiness is a Warm Gun (all time favorite pop/rock song) Rain Taxman Oh! Darling If I Needed Someone
I did this with friends once...it's a really hard, but fun, exercise. This list doesn't even touch the surface of all that I listen to. Whole genres are left out (Jazz, "Classical"(and the eras/subgenres within), Country). Good thread
Quote: What's scaring me is that about half the bands or singers listed,, I've never heard of.. ugg
I don't know if you were replying to me directly or if you were making this statement as a general statement to everyone's lists. Though looking back at many of the lists above mine they fall mainly into the cliassic rock genre. Mine diverged. Widely. So in response to your statement, let me tell you abouth the bands on my list. The Grateful Dead... I'll assume you know of them. For the most part you either 'got it' or you didn't. I owe a big part of my approach to life and my integration of music into my life to this band. I got it. Saw many shows. Including the last show they ever played as a band. RIP Jerry.
Widespread Panic... Following in the footsteps of what the Dead created, Panic has toured for 30 years. Just this year calling it quits. Though all still playing in side acts. While classified as a jam band...they scared hippies. Panic shows were heavy southern rock. Think the Allmans had Duane not died. Or Little Feet meets Sabbath. I saw them many times from 1997-2002 until their lead guitarist died of pancreatic cancer at 39. They replaced him. Though it changed their sound forever. I only saw them a few times after that. Try a song like Traveling Light (a cover) from their live album Light Fuse Get Away.
Blind Melon... I feel is the most under rated band of the 90's. Had Shannon Hoon not died they would have put out so much good music. As it stands their first album is one of very few albums in my collection I can go back to over and over. All be it skipping the song No Rain each time. Unfortunately that was the song that got the radio play. Many brushed them off having never heard the rest of the album. Which quite frankly just brought it with as much intent as any band coming from the same time. Melodic, mildly southern rock psychedelic, powerful... The songs Deserted, or Time, raw not too grungy rock from that time.
Yonder Mountain... Bluegrass kids grown up into flat picking studs. They mix the old with the new. Bringing elements of being raised on jam bands into the traditions of old. Rollicking good times. A song like Casualty is a good snapshot of what they bring to the bluegrass world.
As for the others I listed. Mainly underground dj stuff. Though its becoming more mainstream. It's funny as I hear mixes in tv commercials sometimes that I've heard mixed by my favorite dj's. There's a producer that goes by Pretty Lights. His style mixes old and new. In my mind he's doing it as well as anyone right now. Try a track like Finally Moving.
YouTube is amazing. I find new music all the time by exploring there. I often wonder when or if I'm going to find something new. Inevitably every few months I stumble across something or someone great. At almost 40 years old I have too much life left to listen to the same stuff I'm listening to now until I grow old. So bring on the new. Keep it fresh.
I had a buddy who loved Rush. I think he said that he had seen the in concert almost 100 times ,...... and that was quite a few years ago.
I like so many bands that it's impossible to pick just 5 ........ from Metallica, to Earth, Wind, and Fire, to Kenny Wayne Sheppard, to Aerosmith, to Boston, to The Moody Blues, to Herb Albert, to Eric Clapton, to 3 Days Grace, To Parliment/Funkadelics, to Bad Company, to Chicago, to Candlebox, to Jim Croce, to Harry Chapin, to Stevie ray Vaughn, to the Guess Who, to the Who ........ from classical, to jazz, to old school funk ..... to rock ... to alternative ...... even a very small amount of country.
About the only genres I don't like are rap and anything that is overly twangy.

Same Here. I had over 10,000 song on my Zune when it passed, may it RIP. I'm in the process of getting all my music back on my mp3. I had it backed up on 3 different hard drives. Couldn't take the chance in losing it.

FWIW According to a book I read about their recording sessions, that was pretty much the last time they were a cohesive unit in the studio. Good song too!
Sweet is are horriblely underrated. Great band..I have Desolation Blvd. That front album cover was shot on Sunset Blvd. Sweet,Slade got kinda washed out by Zepplin,Purple,Sabbath,Heep, in the mid 70's. speaking of Rush..do hot looking girls go to a Rush show...when I was kid I saw them open for KISS but I know people were there to see KISS
If I was more of a country fan I'd probably pick up the new Lionel Ritchie album ..... where he does his hits along with country stars. I saw it advertised and thought that it was kind of unusual.
I liked a lot of the Commodores stuff way back in the day.

I am & did pick it up, Sounds pretty good, hard to get any better than a good Lionel Ritchie song, but the countrey singers who join him do a great job and fit really good, enjoing it alot.
Dang. I left this off last night. George Strait is as good as it gets. This was a #1, but not a top of his hits, but I like it a lot.....my cowgirl is from Idaho. I Love you Bean!
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.
I had to bring this topic back from the dead because I love Radiohead and totally forgot them. I saw them a few weeks ago, and although the venue was horrible, they sounded incredible
1. Everything in Its Right Place 2. The Bends 3. Like Spinning Plates 4. The Pyramid Song 5. Karma Police
I figure I'll give you a Deftones top five and go semi-local on a couple more.
Deftones (No particular order, just five favs) 1. Engine No. 9 2. Dai the Flu 3. Lifter 4. My Own Summer (Shove It) 5. Digital Bath
I only have their first three albums. What wasn't so good about SNW? And I'm not sure what it is but it seems like I always really dig most on a band's first three albums and then find it goes downhill. I mean it's hard to have a distinct sound without over-doing it and becoming repetitive, but sometimes when a band changes their sound and diversifies it (i.e. Linkin Park after Meteora) it can turn out as total garbage.
Filter (I know based a bit more out of LA but started in CLE) 1. Consider This 2. Welcome to the Fold 3. American Cliche' 4. Dose 5. Cancer
I've always been a bigger fan of Richard Patrick than Trent Reznor. You can't argue that Trent knows his way around a beat, but personality/vocal styles/lyrics make me like Patrick and Filter better.
The Black Keys - I admittedly didn't know jack about them until I saw them in March in Detroit. 1. Little Black Submarines 2. I Got Mine 3. Everlasting Light 4. Thickfreakness 5. Girl is on My Mind That Akron two-piece takes their talents more places than LBJ could. I love their home-cooked southern-ish rock feel and the songs are three times better live. I didn't want to leave Joe Lous Arena that night and they ended up doing a sweet three song encore. I'd recommend them if they're nearby. They'll be at Lollapolooza in CHI but that'll be a pricey show with a bunch of bands you may not be beating down the door to see.
Politicians are puppets, y'all. Let's get Geppetto!

Their last album is a masterpiece. Exceptionally well done, it flows great, isn't too long, isn't too short. As always with them, all their songs are well thought out and they just don't do filler.
SNW just never grew on me. I put it on the other day when I was hanging out and it still just doesn't do anything for me. Pink Cellphone is a really cool song (minus the end with that girl talking about things we just can't talk about on DT) and Kimdracula is good, but overall it just doesn't attach to you. It's not a horrible record by any means, but it just doesn't add up to their other stuff.
Even the self titled is better, I actually put that on after, and found that it was more enjoyable now than before.
I love those guys, have seen them 7 or 8 times, got to say hell to Chino a few years ago. They're good guys and have always stayed true to their fans.
White Pony is probably my favorite from them. The transition from Around the Fur to WP is incredible.

I really liked TN's 1st album and then Tooth Fang & Claw, He does the best Maybelline ever.
Led Zeppelin
Boogie With Stu Down By The Seaside Black Dog Rock & Roll Trampled Under Foot
I have a ? for all you Led Z fans. Of all the songs listed I don't think I saw one Boogie with Stu. I think that is the best all time jamming song ever. I know the story behind it, and the reason they only put it on one album, but It's the best that they ever did.
