I started reading the old board when I was 10 years old, and I'm pretty sure many of you think I'm still 13, but I did it. I'm graduating (with honors) a week from today.
Then in the fall I will be attending Ohio University on a full scholarship, where I will major in journalism and economics.
[insert nostalgic paragraph about how much I've changed since I started posting here and how much many of you, and the board as a whole, have impacted me as a person]
I don't come around here all that often anymore, but I still felt like I should share this, since I pretty much grew up on this board.
I will be awaiting your checks and gifts in the mail.

Congratulations. I sent my gift of Monopoly money today. It might soon be worth more than the real stuff.

Way to go my man! Enjoy this summer, because once college starts, your life will be so much harder. Oh, wait, no it won't. Congrats!

How To Write Good
by Frank L. Visco
My several years in the word game have learnt me several rules:
1. Avoid alliteration. Always. 2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with. 3. Avoid cliches like the plague. (They're old hat.) 4. Employ the vernacular. 5. Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc. 6. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are unnecessary. 7. It is wrong to ever split an infinitive. 8. Contractions aren't necessary. 9. Foreign words and phrases are not apropos. 10. One should never generalize. 11. Eliminate quotations. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said: "I hate quotations. Tell me what you know." 12. Comparisons are as bad as cliches. 13. Don't be redundant; don't more use words than necessary; it's highly superfluous. 14. Profanity sucks. 15. Be more or less specific. 16. Understatement is always best. 17. Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement. 18. One-word sentences? Eliminate. 19. Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake. 20. The passive voice is to be avoided. 21. Go around the barn at high noon to avoid colloquialisms. 22. Even if a mixed metaphor sings, it should be derailed. 23. Who needs rhetorical questions?
Congrats and good luck.

The only thing Deep has in common with Doogie Howser is that he has a goofy friend named Vinnie Delpino.

Congrats! My sister went to OU. They have one of the best schools of journalism in the country. It really means something to get a full scholarship there. That school is not cheap at all. Have fun making that drive up and down US 33. It's a really pleasant drive and actually quite gorgeous in spring/summer and fall weather. Oh yeah, be prepared for college to be a lot harder then high school. I don't want to put it too bluntly, but in terms of difficulty level between college and high school, high school is a joke. I wish I were back there again......I think engineering is too hard.

Grats...I admit when I see you post my first thought is of a 13-14 year old. But that's because as us old folks get old, 8-10 years is a drop in the bucket, and we seldom accept they actually passed by. I still have friends I in Ohio that when I left 20+ years ago were 16-18, and when I think of them, I get that 16 year old image, when truth is they are mid-late 30's with families.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Congratulations, Deep. If you need any helpful pointers about OU or Athens, let me know. I grew up in Athens, went to OU, and now work uptown.

Deep...congratulations on your upcoming graduation and earning a scholarship to OU...your gift is in the mail...
Majoring in journalism and economics should keep you busy once school starts...hopefully you will have the time to drop by occasionally and talk Browns stuff...good luck and go Browns.

Congrats, Deep. Taught English and have some journalism in it. Hang a note if you need help. Also, print about 10 of Dave's post. Hats off to him. Good advice between the giggles.
