4-0,3-1 and the Browns are probally playoff bound.
2-2 very much still in the race for the playoffs.
1-3,0-4 will probally have the Browns struggling to get to .500.

anything is possible. But I think the 1st 4 games will be very telling.
The Philly game is winnable but I think the Browns cannot let McCoy go off.
Not having Taylor in is to Philly's advantage.
You can't let Vick just stand back and have him all day to scan the field.
can the Browns LB'ers keep him from getting big yards up field if he finds a opening?
I expect the Eagles to get a heavy dose of Richardson.

The Bengals game is intresting. They could come out of Baltimore with alot of momentem if they beat the Ravens. 1st game at home. If they lose to the Ravens, the Bengals could be in a pressure situation to win.

The Bills are Jekyll and Hyde. They added that franchise piece to the defense. Their front 7 could be scary good.
The Browns need to get to Fitzpatrick early. They can't allow Jackson/Spiller to make 3rd and 2nd downs very convertable. Fitzpatrick has always struggled on 3rd and long situations.

The Ravens game will be a gut check for the Browns no matter what the Browns record is. It will be a statement game. I think this might be the most important game of the 4. It vs a division rival who the Browns have not had success against.
Flacco is a beatable QB. But Ray Rice is hard to keep contained.

Absolutely Everything.
We will be able to accurately extrapolate our season performace based upon the performance in those first four games.

It will tell us that we'll be between 4-0 and 0-4 LOL

Seriously,, I don't know what it would say. 0-4 would be ugly and get the natives pretty restless. Calls will go out for Shurmurs head or Heckerts head or Holmgrens Head or Lerners head.

Go 4-0 and euphoria will rain supreme in the land of Cleve. No doubt we'll have predictions of 12-4 and a superbowl appearance.

Either way, the possibility to end up 12-4 or 4-12 exists...

Therefore, I don't think it tells us anything about the entire year. it only tells us everything about where we are at the end of 4 games...

There are a lot of variables to contend with as to wheather it shows us anything at all.

QB; I know most, including myself feel that Weeden will be the starter. But let's look at that for just a second.

If we start Weeden and he falters, we can't go from Weeden to Colt and then back to Weeden. That would be the perfect storm for a fan base frenzy which is exactly what this FO wishes to avoid.

Secondly, how many rookies will be staring? As of now most figure we will have Weeden, TRich and Shwartz with Benjiman getting at least some playing time due to his elite speed.

With three new starters on O at key positions, it's been my experience watching the game, the first half of this season will be far more these players gaining some familiarity with one another. Weeden learning the timing of the WR's and TRich getting comfortable with the speed and physicality of the game at the next level.

So I really don't expect the first four games to tell us much, if anything. What I look for in terms of telling us anything, is the second half of the season.

Will we see the timing between the QB and our WR's grow? Will we see our G's get better and give TRich better run blocking? Will Shwartz mature to be the long term answer at the RT position? Will we see Weeden leading our WR's so they get YAC instead of having to stop or turn while getting planted where they stand?

Will we see Benjiman be able to use that speed to be the deep threat we all want to see? Will Mitchell be that big burner we all hoped he'd be?

Too many people seem to be unrealistic in expecting to see too much, too soon. Continuity is something that builds in an offense over time. It's not like microwave popcorn...... 3 minutes or less.

I feel those who expect great results in the first four games will be disappointed and reach the wrong conclusions far too quickly to give this offense the time it will need to gel.

But that's just my opinion.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

If the assumption with any rookie Qb is that he will struggle a little at first and progressively get better as the season goes along, the first four games take on more significance in my opinion. Then again, Andy Dalton was 2-2 after the first four games last year. Although, they were all close games and Cincinnati seemed to gain confidence from those performances. They proceeded to win the next three leading into the bye week and then kept rolling after the bye week, winning their next two. After the Titans game, the Bengals proceeded to lose four of their next five. And not so coincidentally, those games were against the AFC North. The only game they won during that stretch? Yeah... it was against us.

At the end of the day, winning in the AFC North (specifically beating the Steelers and Ravens) is what's most important. But as is always the case, a fast start out of the gate can build confidence quickly and get the team some momentum.

For Weeden's sake, I hope they do come out swinging. Because this is Cleveland, and if they are 1-3 after four games, there is no doubt the sky will start falling.

I'm hoping Weeden does well.. I just hope he doesn't throw a lot of INT's.. those frustrate me w/ a passion.

Yea.. its a part of the game, but if you consistently do it like ie Carson Palmer.. then we need to look elsewhere for a QB.

I agree ... It's always better to get a good start but teams have to finish to make the playoffs.

We still have many questions about the rookies, that will (again) be key contributors/starters this season.
With that comes a learning curve, but looking at that schedule the first thing that comes to my mind is the two games vs division opponents ... we need to take one of those games regardless of what we do vs the non division opponents or even our end of the season wins total ... If we can go 500 vs our division, then that will be a major step forward for us.

Playoffs? Well you don't get there without first taking care of business in your division.

Not so easy a task, but that's what it will take for us to take that first step.

I don't mind some interceptions as long as there are far more TD passes.

DA's year of 29 TD passes and 19 INT didn't bother me one bit. I would much rather have that (plus the other drives ended with a 3 yard TD run by the RB) than a year where the QB throws 14 TD and 11 INT, but the offense scores less than a stinky, acne infested, ugly kid at an all boy school.

With all the changes that we are expecting (I am anyway) to things like starters for instance and the PROPER installation over time of the entire system.. I expect there to be some learning issues at first.

The first 4 games may not really tell us much at all when it's all said and done.

Eww...

Anyways, I just wanted to add that I expect the Brownies to look much different at the end of the season vs after the first 4 games. Lots of rookies playing (and a rook QB, to boot), playbook potentially changing with a deep threat QB, and a new offensive coordinator says, to me, slow start with marked improvement during the middle and end of the season.

So, to answer the question, the first 4 games won't really tell me much. If we somehow come out on fire, I think that will be really interesting to understand.

Peyton Manning had 28 INTs his Rookie year, to 26 TDs, they went 3-13.

The next year he had 26 TDs again, but only 15 INTs, they went 13-3...

Improvement is all you ca ask for...

(And please can we stop the random INTs? Like the ones where theres no Browns player in the area? I don't care who's fault it was... Those are the worst.)

no, i don't mind your answer, but they always seem to fall along the lines of "we don't know... we haven't had enough time to see... the system has to grow..." etc.

Certainly there is merit to that. It just seems like that is your go-to, and it had me thinking "at what point is the right time to evaluate?"

It's time when it's time. I mean you seem to agree that we don't really know or at least accept that we don't. You seem to think there is merit to not having enough time and that it needs to grow.

So I'm kinda confused.., At what point is it time to evaluate you ask? I think when things are in place and have had time to properly mature and develop.

Let me give you an example that may help (I hope it does) Last year, we saw lots of problem with McCoy. they were evident. But I also didn't believe that with all that went on, that it was totally fair to evaluate him without looking at more than just his mistakes.

I felt there was more than one problem and I wanted to see McCoy with better receivers, a running game and a better right tackle. if he couldn't get it done then.. then the evaluation is complete.. he's not the guy.

did that help?

Indeed...but I don't see teams tanking games.

We need to win the opener.....if we don't the season is over. We will forever be bobbing below .500 up to .500....at least for a few weeks.....then below for good.

This team not only needs to go out and beat Philly, they need to BEAT them.

Sooner or later we need to make a statement at home, and we have several months to prepare for that game.

It's time for the coaches to step up and the players to step up and say, "These are your Cleveland Browns"!!

Hope is great, but it's time to start winning some games, and not by a last ditch field goal. I want some run aways. Some high fiveing with total strangers in the early 3rd qtr. Hugs and kisses by the 4th qtr.

Forget this sweating it out or leaving early crap.

I think the first four games will tell us a lot. We do not have a team full of guys that have won before ... we do not have a head coach that has won before...I don't think they would be able to overcome the bad momentum of an 0-4 start. They won't have any experience to draw from to weather the storm. Add to that the fact that Holmgren basically said a bad record is unacceptable, and you have an overwhelming pressure to perform. If we have a bad start, I don't think we handle the pressure well enough to get it turned around. And of course, a bad start could mean that once again we are just not very good.

Having said that, I think of the first four games that 2, 3, and 4 are winnable. I'm starting to have a feeling that Balt and Pitt are going to have down years. Maybe wishful thinking, but they are due.

I said I thought Richardson would instantly get us to 8-8. I believe he is going to add a dimension as a pure playmaker that is going to be so different than what we are accustomed to. We've not had a real playmaker on this offense since Edwards left. It is going to be huge for us.

I can also see us going 4-12 again. There are still a lot of uncertainties with this team ... A LOT.

The run game should get going quickly. Pass protection may take a few games to come together. Run defense is my big fear especially early on.

I think we will be able to hang with teams early but it will take the passing game coming together rapidly for us to get into the winner's circle. It will be interesting.

IMO, how we play in the first games isn't really even about us...

Philly

The pressure is on in Philly, it's almost Super Bowl or bust for both Vick and Andy Reid, Philly spent alot of draft picks on defense, but that means their defense is young, does Nnamdi finally fit in? Can Demeco Ryans lead that defense? Will DeSean Jackson act like a normal human being?

Philly almost has more questions than we do.

@Cincy

I think they underestimated what Benson meant to them, Lawfirm is no starting caliber RB in the NFL. Dalton got by his rookie year just tossing it up to people, ask Derek Anderson how long he lasted doing that...

Cincy could take the next step this year, but we say that every 3 years...

Buffalo

I don't know what happened to the Bills last year (besides injuries) Was HAH-VAHD Graduate Ryan Fitzpatrick fools gold? Or can he and the offense get back to the form that had them 5-2 last year? Will the addition of Mario Williams solidify their defense?

The Bills, sleeper? Or asleep at the wheel?

@Baltimore

I wonder how much Joe Flacco hates Lee Evans. Ray Rice is unhappy, and I don't understand a team not willing to play it's BEST PLAYER. How does the Defense handle missing Suggs? How many Pro Bowl votes will Ray Lewis get versus how many games will he play?

Baltimore was on the brink of the Superbowl, and their defense is running out of time.

I fully expect a 1-3 start and as long as we're in most games and see the things we need to see from the rooks, I'd have no problem with it....80% the win comes at home against BUF, 15% @CIN, 5% vs PHI

shot at 2-2 is bigger than going 0-4 imho, but no way we go 3-1 or 4-0

The year was 2007.. First game of the year,, you were ticked off and demanded that RAC be fired immediatly., then we went on to win 10 games.

That was the first game where Frye started, was yanked in favor of Anderson and we still stunk it up.. Then Frye was traded the next day to Seattle and anderson finished the year..

I was never in favor of Chuck, so if so, I was upset the goof RAC went with Chuck Fry.

At least he got it right and went with the better QB. Chuck Fry sucked.

Damn, I wish I could find that post...

EDIT: I checked all your posts, it only goes back 400 posts and so it's apparently no longer on here. at least not that I can find..

Benson meant so much to the Bengals thats why he's unemployed right now.

The Eagles defense still have a elite pair of defensive ends in Babin and Cole.
Ryans should transition easy to their defense. Jackson got paid..that should change his attitude.
Philly has less questions..they aren't starting a pair of rooks in the backfield.
they have proven playmakers at WR.They get to the QB on defense.

the question is can the Browns play physical football?

It will tell us the same things the first four games of each of the last three seasons has told us....will we be mediocre or suck the big one.

Absolutely. Richardson behind this OL could be a whole lot of fun.

I remember I was mad. I was mad because he stated Chuck, and we lost. I am not downplaying anything...I was mad.

The point is we made a change and that is what turned that season around. If we start the Cherub this first game and we lose, I'll be just as ticked and want Shurmer run out of town on a rail.

The eagles really struggled against the run last year. With the right game plan and Chilly calling plays, Richardson could make a statement here. And dont think that Heckert hasnt circled this date in red!

Stupid question...we were as physical than ever last season....we dominate the Steelers in the trenches in both games and kept it close but the drop off from Roethli to Colt was too big to overcome

We also missed Ward's physicality when he was out, huge drop off to Young/Hagg

Physicality and motivation were really the least of our problems last year...I can't remember a game where the team played like they didn't care last season...and I remember plenty of those under Romeo and the idiot

If we go ought for 4, it will have reached an ugly pitch in town. At 4 and nought, hell freezes over, the Rapture, miracles and signs and portents because, conservatively speaking, that would probably require an act (or acts) of God. And I would be a happy fan.
More practically, I expect Weeden to start and improve, so if it is a 2 and 2, I want to see us play well as team and score more. My biggest concern is that we get out of the pre-season and those first four games healthy or relatively so; injuries in the openers can do a lot more damage down the road, especially in our division. Go ahead, make me cheer! Give us some good stuff to watch for a change.
