Bad Ubaldo drove to the park today. Boooo!
I like Good Ubaldo so much more. He doesn't ruin many days for me.
Oh well, only 6 back and it's still early. Bays need to keep chipping away. We can still get this W.

Pomeranz and white haven't exactly been that awesome.
So far the Ubaldo trade looks like junk for junk.

Heck of a pickup Ludwick has turned out to be. That was his 13th homer, Dusty should start thinking about moving him to cleanup and moving Phillips to the top of the order.

Indians went 0-10 with RISP today and lost 3-0. Lowe had 1 bad inning and was stellar otherwise. Carlos Santana needs a trip to AAA to find his swing again - he's lost at the plate, and he's not a good enough catcher to be this bad offensively. Bring up Carlin and platoon him with Marson. Chicago was winning last I heard so we're probably 4 back, and Detroit may have jumped us in the standings too (didn't hear their score). Not a good Sunday for the Featherheads. On to Tampa.

They should just put Santana at 1st and forget about him catching. If hey have to, have him catch once a week to give Marson a day off. I would bring up LaPorta and have him split time between 1st and the OF. We need a bat desperately, and he's about the best we have going at AAA. I know that he's always been a beast in the Minors, but we need something. I mean, Aaron Cunningham? Please. I could probably hit .189, even with my back being a mess. We need runs. This guy should never see the plate. If we have to use him as a late inning defensive replacement, fine .... but that's about the only time he should see the field. I'm still waiting for the payoff on Johnny Damon too. He's hitting .223, and sucks in the field. I can see where the guy was worth a shot ..... but he sucks. Bring up a minor leaguer if you have to ..... I mean, what's he going to do ..... hit worse? I would say that the Indians should be looking to trade for a bat, but there are 2 problems. 1st is that I don't know of a bat good enough to really elevate the rest of the team, and 2, they really don't have much left to trade for a bat. They gave up a bunch in the Jimenez trade. The biggest problem is that this team really only has 5 reliable hitters, and one of the (Chisenhall) is hurt. Other than him we have Brantley, Choo, Cabrera, and Kipnis. Marson is hitting well, but he's had very limited at bats. Other than that we have a bunch of .240 and below guys. Santana continuing his funk from last year really hurts. .239 looked like a real aberration last year, but after following it up with a half year of .221 ..... I dunno. He's also dropped in power bigtime. He hit 27 HR last year, and has 5 this year. That's scary, because he was supposed to be one of our real stars. We fell out of second today, into third .... half a game behind the Tigers, and 4 game back of the White Sox. We can't fall too much further back or we'll have no chance of catching up.

I really think Santana needs some time at AAA. His swing has gotten way long, and he is just not making good contact. The thing is, did anyone really think we were getting the next Johnny Bench for Casey Blake? Today, his throw into CF on an attempted steal cost a run. A good hitting catcher is a bonus, but like SS, you mostly need good defense from that position.

That's about what you're going to get out of LaPorta.

Maybe .... but he is tearing up AAA again .... so bringing him up is worth a chance.

Chapman's been incredible. In his last 7 IP, 19 of his 21 outs have been Ks.

yeah, it's amazing we finally gave up on LaPorta and one of the veteran replacements (Damon) is actually hitting worse than Matt ever did in MLB. only positive is Damon has been hitting slightly better as the season progressed. looking at his 2 previous years, around .300 OBP w/ a near .400 SLG is about what we should have expected from him. after his abysmal May start, we have been getting that. BA/OBP/SLG May .171 / .261 / .256 June .254 / .319 / .444 July .292 / .292 / .375 http://www.fangraphs.com/statsplits.aspx?playerid=185&position=OF&season=2012

I'm not sure that's a fair criticism, but I see your point. At the time Youk went to the sox:
Chiz wasn't hurt yet and was playing pretty well, Tomlin was required to even begin trade discussions Youk is, what, 37, was hurt, and hadn't jack all season
If he played LF, then we'd have no excuse to not have gone after him. But with what he'd done this year, plus the price tag, plus burying Chiz again... I can't blast them for doing what they did.

ok, thanks. My point is though, he's not the future, long-term replacement. I still think they made the right call by riding Chiz, just ran into some bad luck.

Well at 37 and that age and beyond up, you aren't consider the long-term by any and all means. You are just a benchwarmer until the long term replacement comes.

Any bets on which Ubaldo shows up this afternoon?
You have a 50/50 shot.
I guess he'll bounce back after a HORRIBLE outing and go 6 1/3, 5 H, 3 BB, 2 ER and 4 K. Not very good, but what we need to get a W before leaving Tampa.
Since I predict a good outing, it will probably be another crappy outing. Our bulley really needs a deep outing from him today. Masterson couldn't go deep so lots of guys will be taxed today.

My guess would be a good (not great) outing, in the 3er in 6ip type of deals. I would also guess that it won't matter because Price is going to shut us down.

Sweet. Bases Loaded with 2 outs (2 H & 1 BB). Come on dude....you're making my prediction look bad!

OK....good end of the inning but that was 23 pitches and the lineup turnover may cost him later on.
Come on BATS!

Cunningham in CF, Duncan in LF, Brantley at DH, Hafner sitting it out. Makes perfect sense, what with Cunningham being the straw that stirs the Indians offense and all. Yikes.

i've gotten to the point with Ubaldo that as long as his H+BB = SO, then he seems to have a good enough outing to keep us in the game (wish I could expect more).
after 2 innings, it's 4SO (great!) but 4 BB+H (well, at least he's even)

Well, he's gone 5 2/3 with 7 H, 5 BB, 4 ER & 5 K.
That last hit......killed this game. Take him out there.
Oh well, we split with the Rays.

at least Gio Gonzalez got shelled today too
(he is the other high-profile pitcher who got traded last July. he's been a tad better for the Nats than Ubaldo has been for us overall though. to put it mildly)

I agree he is very good. Thought he was another deadline deal. Still, he's the other SP who was traded last year. Wish we had him instead of Ubaldo.

Sweet win for the Reds today. Down 6-0, they come back and win 7-6 thanks to Brandon Phillips! Chapman comes in the ninth, and lights out for the D-backs.
