As I type this, my father in law is in the back of an ambulance on his way to the hospital. The only things I really know are that his blood sugar is high, but not excessively so, and that he's so weak he couldn't walk. Please send your positive thoughts and prayers his way. Thanks

Thanks. So far, he's "ok" but they suspect a mini stroke. Tests being done to determine. Speech is slurred, he has muscle weakness, but he is awake and alert.

Keep 'em coming. I suspect this is going to be a long road to hoe. I'm thankful that my in laws live 30 minutes away now, instead of 5+ hours. With John being an only child, well...you can imagine. Kickers of it all. We have an aunt and uncle literally on their way to stay with main laws right now, plus, Johns stuck at work til 4.

Done. I hope that he had a complete and rapid recovery.

I have a friend who had a stroke, but he had a fairly major one. The only thing that saved him was the fact that his wife shoved some aspirin down his throat when she suspected that it was a stroke. (he was having complete failure of one side of his body, and couldn't speak) He's made a remarkable recovery, but he's still not back to 100%.

Another update...They've now ruled out a stroke and have it pinned to possible kidney failure (he is diabetic) or severely limited kidney functions. We haven't been told for sure yet or not, but suspect he'll be on dialysis by the end of this hospital stay.

Latest word is that he's in the hospital because he sucks at managing his diabetes, and has my mother in law thinking a high sugar number is ok for a 68 year old guy. They've been disabused of that notion, not only by doctors, but by my husbands best friend, who was diagnosed with diabetes in November. Thomas's family has a huge history of diabetes - both parents, many of his siblings too.

My father I law told Thomas's wife that he hasn't taken care of his diabetes because the supplies are too expensive. She called me and is sending me all kinds of resources for free/cheap supplies so he won't have any more excuses.

(now to teach my mother in law how to cook properly for a diabetic)

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.

Sounds like a diet management thing. Education is the best thing there. Glad to hear this is something that can be worked on.

WOW,,, from one who knows, Diabetes is nothing to fool around with. if you deal with it,, you can do just fine. if you don't,, you are in serious risk.

My best to him and I hope he responds the right way
