sports vs not sports, it's not really easy to get others to understand.

Lots of things can be sports but don't have to be. And there are many different types of sports.
To me it is all about what kind of league or team or individual contest is going on, and at the same time what kind of scoring and what one is actually competing against.

for instance, Horse racing and indy car racing have similarities, one vs the pack, yet I'm not sure they both require that the indivdual race be a part of the series of races.

Are video games a sport? NO. Until they started a circuit and had competitions and champions. I think they made a sport out of it and made a tv show about it.

Some things are not always a sport, like shot put, it is in the olympics, but if some unorganized folks just decide to have a competition, then it's not.
Beach volleyball. It is when sin jin smith and organized teams of two compete on ESPN, but if a group of folks have a pick up game it is not.

I dont' think it's a sport unless there's a league, and or a champion or somthing like that to be strived for.
Like the " worlds strongest man competition" .
But pageants are not sports, but their close, because it's a vote.
Poker is not a sport, because its done sitting down, and poker/ all card games are dumb.
Trapeze and tight rope walking is not a sport, but if there were a league It might become one.

I think a sport has to have two things.
1 a league or organized trophe to be strived for and
2. some display of what is being done with even the slightest athleticism.
Now , chess IS a sport, so maybe the athleticism on display in Chess is the athleticism of the mind.

But none of those are team sports, team sports are totally different, team vs team like Football or soccer, is way more complicated. And it is a whole other category but they are all sports.

Like bull riding and bass fishing, they become sports when they get a league. But bull riding and bass fishing without the league done by a couple of nobodys in the middle of nowhere is still just as challenging and athletic, ( and since challenging and athletic, it would by some definition be considered, (verb) sporting, but without the league, not a (noun) sport.
That's how I would define it. ( battleship is not a sport.) ( grave robbing is not a sport, but if it were , I think I'd watch.) Certainly before poker.

Even cheerleading is considered a sport. It has all the aspects of a sport, organized competition, physical exertion and a degree of skill. Considering what defines a sport, throw out the subjective scoring nonsense and everything is considered a sport. Even your job.

there's no defense in cheerleading and the scoring is subjective. It fails twice.

That doesn't mean it doesn't have it's merits, but it's a competition and not a sport.

If I send my football players over to your school to get your cheerleaders pregnant, that is a form of defense.
