Quote: I'm thinking about doing yoga. A few years ago I would have lol'd at the thought of it, but the more I read about what you can get in flexibility has me really interested.
I stretch quite often as it is, basically everyday if not more than once a day.
There are many styles of yoga, ranging from mediation to extreme flexing. And I'll tell ya, none of it is as easy as it may sound, some of the poses are very difficult to do and maintain until you gain the flexibility and balance required. The yoga in the P90X program was the hardest disc of the series for me to accomplish, even then I didn't do all the poses nearly as well as others do.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.
Quote: I'm not a physical therapist, but if I were a betting man, I'd put a lot of money on it being a very good idea for you to strengthen all of your core muscles - abs, obliques, back. All of it. Stretching is great for when muscles get tight, but having strong muscles is what gives you proper support and posture.... not stretched muscles.
Unfortunately, I was in fantastic shape when my back started bothering me. I was right around 190# ... and most of that was muscle. (I may have gotten up to 200 when I first went to the doctor) I wore a 34 inch waist. (I had gotten down to a 32, but that was just too thin for me)
Anyway, I tried to maintain my workouts when the pain started, but couldn't. I went to doctor after doctor. I had procedure after procedure. I can't turn my body very well, which was the core of a lot of my exercises. It seems to grab that nerve and I either get pain, or lose feeling in a leg, my butt, or another area I would really prefer not to lose feeling.
I can do basic crunches without too much issue, and I do those regularly. However, the twisting crunches, and other exercises like that have issues that freak me out. I really do worry that the feeling won't come back ...... and while that's horrible in a leg or butt cheek .... the other affected area (let's just say the pelvis area) really scares the hell out of me.
Get a bike, get it sized properly, and ride it. It is the best thing that I have done. I have a bad hip and can't run a mile, without having it hurt for 3 days, but normally ride 80 to 100 miles a week and my back has not gone out in 4 years...
Check into prirformus syndrome, or sciatica. I know what you describe all too well.

I have pretty decent flexibility and pretty good balance. As a hockey goalie you kinda have to. I definitely want more flexibility for it though.
Any reccomendations? I would be a 100% first timer in yoga.

You're not kidding. I'm crumpled up in a pile of sweat after that one. It sure has helped my flexibility and stamina, though.

Rodney Yee's "Yoga for Flexibility" would be a great DVD to start with. It's very well done and he teaches the proper movements and breathing.

Intervals are supposed to increase your metabolism and fat burning more than just a steady run/bike, etc, and is also supposed to increase your stamina as well. As long as you're going all out during those times. I think you're doing a good thing with that.
The intervals for 10 seconds with a 90 second rest sounds a bit off......usually it's more like 20 seconds with a shorter rest. But start with what works for you. I tried something out last night called the Tabata Protocol. 5 minute warm up, 8 twenty second all out intervals, with only 10 seconds rest between, then a 2 minute cool down. Comes out to an 11 minute workout, but is allegedly more beneficial than an hour of plain old cardio.
But it's definitely tough....10 seconds rest ain't enough for sure.

I'd say that it depends upon how you measure and quantify "beneficial".
As for the rest of it, it just depends upon the goal of your interval training. I've you're trying to improve your run times for a 5k, you need to be doing much longer intervals - more in the range of 1-2 minutes hard effort with 1 min recovery.
In either case - speed work such as intervals is the sort of thing that is a recipe for injury if you don't already have a solid aerobic base. You do NOT want to jump into it as part of your off-the-couch workout regimen.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

Thanks for the recc, I'm gonna look into this. Should be something new and interesting to tackle.
If you want a good workout, try the Spartacus workout. I just started it and it's really kicking my butt. You have to make sure you try your best and follow the timing they set for you.
Just wanted to say the games this friday. I didn't get as much working out in as I had hoped. Work got busy. Wish me luck. The other team is a lot smaller than us, but a lot faster and younger. So should be a good game.
Hey guys just wanted to let everyone know we played the game last night. Youth and speed beat size and experience/age lol. 35-6 was the final. We figured we would be the more organized team but they definitely had us beat in that department.
My back held up a lot better than I thought it would. But I ended up giving myself a concussion with a min left in the game. Not quite sure how it all happened. I know i left my feet, but don't rememberr to much after. Or before that. But I felt better after a few seconds on the sideline anf finished the game. By the time I made it to the locker room i was sick. Went and got a ct scan and it came back good.
Had a good time though and so did everybody involved.
Well, youth normally beats age.....heck Father Time is undefeated, so don't feel bad. How did you play overall? Any penalties?
Sorry about your head, be careful and keep an eye on yourself (and have someone check in on you frequently). The fact that you were sick means something.
I blacked out while playing soccer about 7 weeks ago. I'm running to a guy with the ball, he kicks and then I'm running the other direction as I hear, "Nice job Brian, dust yourself off and stay in there" from the sidelines. I had no idea what happened. I found out later that the ball crushed the side of my head, I dropped to the ground and got up 2-3 seconds later. I guess I was "out" for 5-6 seconds. I didn't go to the hospital because my head didn't hurt on the inside or outside and I felt fine. It was probably the best game I've played....I almost scored on a header off a corner.
“...Iguodala to Curry, back to Iguodala, up for the layup! Oh! Blocked by James! LeBron James with the rejection!”
Yea, we were planning on being the more organized team though and we werent. I also ended up playing LT most of the game. Though my wife said i went in at center our last offensive series after I got the concussion.
As for the concussion I feel perfectly fne. A headache every now and then but the ibeuprofen takes care of it. Haven't been sick since i was at hospital and they gave meds for nausea. It was my first concussion.
I played decent, could have been better but was afraid to push my back at first so even on run plays i was letting the d-end come to me then trying to turn him instead of driving him off the ball. But once we got into the game i forgot about my back and stated playying more. My cardio definitely held me back but that was probably 95% of all the guys out there. On defense had a couple pressures, zero tackles unless i did get the one where i left my feet. From wat i was told me and a lb left our feet and one of there lineman and the qb all met at the goalline at the same time.
Some of those mileages seem off, or when you are walking you are walking pretty slow. I am a walker. In a hour or so I'll go for a 9 mile walk, but 5 miles is my benchmark. A five mile walk takes me 82 minutes. It might vary a minute one way or the other, but 82 is a good solid average. That's just over 16 minutes a mile.
Lets see, herniated disc over the winter, 270 lbs ....I see this is old and the game is over....I was going to say don't play, now I'll scroll to the bottom of the thread to see if you are still alive.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

OK....glad to see you didn't have a heart attack and die, even if you bruised your brain.

Lol thats what I told my wife becasue she said see I told you would get hurt. And I said no you said I would hurt my back. Im still pretty sore today almost worst than yesterday. but concussion wise feel fine still.
