I believe we did if you can believe the rumors, #24 and Verajo for the 7th pick (Golden State), and the Cavs turned it down.
Who reported that?

Saw this posted over on another site:
Hollinger:
As I noted with Leonard a year ago, wing players β especially bigger ones β with strong Draft Rater marks virtually never fail. Of the eight players to rate above 13 in the past decade, the worst among them was Josh Childress. Five of the players have played in an All-Star Game, and Rudy Gay may play in an All-Star Game soon. The seventh player is Leonard.
This year, we have two names to add to that list: Dion Waiters and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. Kidd-Gilchrist is probably the safest pick on the board β a big wing who plays defense, has strong stats and comes with no character questions. From a risk-aversion perspective alone he should be a top-five pick; I have him third on my board after Robinson. (See below for how I would rank the prospects, regardless of their Draft Rater numbers.)
I have Waiters fourth for similar reasons. His size, 6-foot-4, is more of a concern, but whatever team made him a promise did a wise thing. Waiters projects as the best small wing since Dwyane Wade, and heβd be a steal if somebody got him in the Nos. 8-10 range currently being discussed.
Dion Waiters Syracuse 14.12 Kendall Marshall North Carolina 13.84 Michael Kidd-Gilchrist Kentucky 13.58 Marquis Teague Kentucky 13.18 Quincy Miller Baylor 12.94 Tony Wroten Washington 12.21 Bradley Beal Florida 11.65 Kostas Sloukas Greece 11.51 Harrison Barnes North Carolina 11.11 Will Barton Memphis 10.90 Doron Lamb Kentucky 10.65 Jeremy Lamb Connecticut 10.50

Dwayne Wade was a much better player than Waiters in college. Wade already had a mid range jumper, and dominated the college level for 2 years. Waiters may be a good player, but he didn"t have the career wade did at Marquette. Grant went for broke here. Classic boom or bust pick.
As I said before, after MKG and Beal ... everyone was going to be a bit of a boom or a bust.

Maybe so....hopefully the scouting is solid, but you have to admit this might be a "bit" of a reach.

It was either him or Drummond for me.
Barnes cannot create his own shot period.

Yeah, I wasn't really sold on Barnes. If we were going to swing for the fences and Beal and MKG weren't there ... then as I said before, I'd be just fine with someone like Drummond. Maybe the Cavs did their homework and found that Drummond's heart just wasn't going to be in it? Waiters seems to be the same sort of Boom or Bust player.
Also of Note ... Barnes, Drummond and now Lamb all went 7, 9 and 12 ... so we would of been "reaching" with one of them at 4 too.

He's an athletic player who can drive the lane and create his own shot. That seems custom made for what we need. http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2012/06/nba_draft_cleveland_cavaliers.html8:31 p.m.: Michael Reghi says a Western Conference scout believes the Cavaliers are working to send Anderson Varejao to Golden State for Harrison Barnes. Hmmm ....... I might do that trade ........ Yeah, I would.

It was reported that Waiters had character issues early on in his career but grew into a man during his sophomore year. Boheim is a coach focused on discipline, so it is possible he was relegated to bench duty based on that. He got starter minutes though and was awarded the sixth man of the year in the Big East.
I am ok with the pick, most reports state he is the most NBA ready player in the draft.

Imagine if we do trade for Barnes ....
We could have 4 of our staring 5 being Irving, Thompson. Waiters, and Barnes. That would be a really nice starting 4some to build on into the future.

Saw that somewhere else too ... looks like that was the trade Frenchy was talking about, but it sounds more likely. I wouldn't understand how the Cavs would turn down an Andy and #24 trade for #7.

I would hate to have to give up 24 as well as Varejao. I would give Varejao and one of the 2nd round picks.
I want another big man at 24.

My guess is that GS would want to wait to see who is available at #24 before pulling the trigger on that. Maybe they're hoping PJ3 slides that far?

http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2012/06/nba_draft_cleveland_cavaliers.html9:12 p.m.: Here's your big man. Chad Ford on ESPN reports that Dallas drafted North Carolina's Tyler Zeller for the Cavaliers in a trade to be announced.

I wonder if we buy a pick from someone wanting to dump a bad contract.

I'm hoping we throw the guy in the trash who pulled the trigger. I just got through telling my son I was glad he was off the board because he sucks. Then boom, twitter report.

Well .... Chris Grant had a great draft last year, so I'm willing to see how this plays out.

I like Tyler Zeller next to Tristan Thompson. He fits in perfectly with the high tempo offense the Cavaliers are looking to build.

If they wanted Barnes over Waiters I will debate them to death.

I was hoping for Gilcrest but I'll be honest I don't know much about Waiters... I'm hoping he's worth the pick, just don't know enough about him...
