An era ends in the desert and the Lakers finally get a real point guard. All in one surprise move.
The Phoenix Suns have reportedly agreed to sign-and-trade point guard Steve Nash to the Los Angeles Lakers for future draft picks, according to ESPN.com. Ken Berger of CBSSports.com has confirmed the details.
ESPN.com reports that Nash will receive a 3-year contract worth more than $25 million.
The Arizona Republic reports the Suns will receive the Lakers' first round picks in both 2013 and 2015 while also receiving second-round picks in 2013 and 2014.
The Lakers hold a $8.9 million trade exception created when they traded forward Lamar Odom to the Dallas Mavericks in December 2011. Nash presumably slides into that exception, Berger reports, allowing the Lakers to receive Nash without sending back salary in return.
The agreement emerged on Wednesday after rumors in recent days linked Nash as a possible sign-and-trade target for the New York Knicks. The Toronto Raptors also reportedly offered Nash a 3-year contract worth $36 million.
Nash, 38, spent the last seven seasons with the Suns, becoming the face of a franchise and a fan favorite. He averaged 12.5 points and 10.7 assists in 2011-12 and was named to the 2012 All-Star team, his eighth selection. He was twice named NBA MVP during his time with the Suns.
The deal cannot be made official until July 11, once the NBA's 10-day free agency moratorium is complete.

Jeremy Lin is suddenly very popular. The former D-Leaguer and waivee-turned-international-phenomenon is a restricted free agent, and everyone's angling for his services despite having had only really a half-season of production. That's what marketing potential and a lovable personality will do for you.
The Knicks desparately want to keep him, the Raptors are considering an offer, the Mavericks have him on radar, but the New York Post reports the biggest contender to land him may be the Rockets, the team that waived him and allowed New York to grab him. From the Post:
A league source said Lin will be offered a contract today -- maybe in the $30 million range -- in a back-loaded nature similar to the one the Rockets offered Bulls big man Omir Asik.
“Jeremy Lin's an excellent player,'' Rockets general manager Daryl Morey told The Post. “We got to know him firsthand when he was with the Rockets early this season. We think he'd make a fantastic addition to our team.''
Lin will spend today with Morey, aiming to make up for waiving the global phenom before the regular-season opener, allowing Grunwald to pick him up on waivers.
The source said the Rockets will offer Lin $5 million, $5.2 million and then plan to jack up the third and fourth years to as much as $10 million.

That's what's called a "poison pill," folks. By jacking up the back-end of the contract, the Rockets make it a very difficult decision for the Knicks to match any offer for him. To put this in perspective, in three years, when that first hit of $10 million per year would come in? The Knicks have $64 million devoted to four players. That is an absolutely absurd number and fielding a full roster could push them well north of $90 million, approaching the $100 million mark, with or without Lin. So yeah, that poison pill makes an impact.
Morey could be looking to start fresh at the point guard position. Starter Kyle Lowry is unhappy and has requested a trade, publicly. Goran Dragic is likely going to fall out of what the Rockets are willing to pay him. Lin represents a save-of-face move for Morey, getting back the player he let slip away, solves his point guard problem along with bringing tremendous financial rewards from his marketability and Lin's a pretty good player to boot.
The only questions if that offer is made are if anyone gets crazy enough to up it, and how prideful Knicks owner James Dolan is.

I'll set the before/after date on him getting fired at January 1.
I never understood the hiring in the first place.
You have a set roster that's been playing a certain way at a high level, just let Shaw take over. Brown isn't going to be able to come in and turn Gasol and Bynum into high quality defensive guys (Maybe Bynum)
I understand Brown not turning the job down, but had he gotten a job with a younger team, I think he would of been better off for it.

I thought I would never feel sorry for a millionaire. However does anyone else feel kind of bad for Michael Kidd Gilchrist? I mean just look at his reaction at :14.
I don't know if we can read too much into that .....
However, one thing that strikes me is all of the guys who know Kyrie Irving, and who are friends with him. That could come in handy down the road when we are looking to add pieces to keep our dynasty going.
I have the feeling that it's going to be the opposite of James, and players will want to come to Cleveland because Irving will be committed to the city and team.

Less committed than the rookie from the same state? You may be right, but to say we thought anything else in 2003 would be silly..
And with the way AAU is going, everyone is going to know everyone else here in the future anyways.

Plus, while he's definitely a talent, he's also come off looking like quite an idiot. While it may not dissuade a potential suitor, it may cause them to pause and reconsider just ever so slightly.

Irving loves Cleveland, Lebron did to an extent.
Lebron either never recruited or did it half-assed. I think Irving, once he gets through a playoff run and hopefully establishes himself, can maybe make a pitch to a FA who has at least a shred of interest in coming to Cleveland. Scott and Irving need to keep building their relationship and their system. Waiters has to pan out. He doesn't need to be a 25ppg guy (I honestly don't think there was one in the draft) but he has to be worthy of being a starter on a good team. \
It's really easy to say after the fact that nobody wanted to come to Cleveland, because when Lebron left, the highest caliber FA they brought in was Larry Hughes. However, they did that without being a warm weather city and without any kind of vote of confidence from Lebron. On top of way the CBA works with guys like Ray Allen and Michael Redd re-signing with their current teams when they hit FA.
This time around it could be a little different. I think a player would want to play for Scott more than with Brown. Maybe not a ton more, but Scott gets a lot of respect for what he did in the league as a player. If KI and Waiters become a lethal tandem and some of these other guys like TT and Zeller become solid contributors? You have an ideal situation for a guy who wants to win.
Dwight is a freak, but he's nowhere near Lebron with his game. Dwight gets everything off of bullying around the rim, but as soon as someone with some weight gets in his face, he punks out. He has no range at all. Bynum isn't the freak that Howard is, but his game is more polished, problem is he's just made out of glass.
I'm kind of sick of his act. If nothing else, at least Lebron waited until game 5 against Boston to make it known he didn't want to be around.
