Seriously, where do you come up with this stuff?

Mary is twice as old as her mother was 35 years ago.
Mary was born when her mother was 25 years old.

Is Mary part of the problem or part of the solution?

If you're not part of the solution, there's plenty of money to be made in prolonging the problem.

In all fairness, both sides are chock full of idiots.

It's pretty obvious on both sides that the car is steering the drivers for a lot of people.

Please .... look at the Republican front runners this year as an example ......

Every time one took the lead, the main stream media (which is a phrase I hate, but it does apply) took turns playing gotcha with him. They would bring up any and every accusation that could find.

How did the accusations against Herman Cain go? Gee ..... where are those women today? Did any of them bring charges? Nope .... but they breathlessly tried to bury Cain anyway.

Look at how Bush was treated by the media compared to how Obama had been treated. HUGE difference .... especially, if as you opine, they are the same guy. Bush was blasted at every chance ...... his firing of Attorneys General was treated as some horrific impeachable offense, and the "outing" of Valerie Plame was some offense that damn near warranted the death penalty for someone. Compare that to how Obama has been treated regarding the Contempt charge against Holder, in a case that resulted in the DEATH of a border agent, and hundreds of people in Mexico by dumping guns into Mexico in some BS scheme.

Then look at how the media has treated the Obama administration regarding the dumping of intelligence secrets. "Huh .... what secrets? Oh those ...... here .... look at this stuff over here instead ......"

Look at how the media treated the Court regarding the recent Obamacare decision. It was fine when Democrats opined that they would be damn near treasonous to find the law Unconstitutional .... but when the Republicans expressed respect for the court but dismay over the decision ..... well ..... they were somehow radicals.

You cannot tell me that this stuff has not happened. The fact that Obama was never really investigated by the media the first time around helped him against both Clinton and in the general election. In that general election, look at how the media treated Palin compared to the way they treated the ignorant bomb thrower of the House, who is now our Vice President. Ridiculous. They amplified every mistake Palin made, and ignored those made by Biden.

However, if you somehow see equal treatment .... then I have no idea what you have been looking at.

Bush, or even Clinton, never had a network dedicated to coverage which pronounced him as a communist, Muslim, or questioned his birth certificate.

That's not network news coverage.

One person, who has a talk show that is as much about entertainment as anything else, is not the same as the daily influence of major network newscasts.

How many people listen to Rush every day? How many watch one of the 3 major network 6:00 newscasts every day? (including weekends) There really is no comparison.

When you add in the way the network newscasts clip video to make certain people look bad ..... like them clipping the video of Romney talking about the computerized sandwich thing ...... and that is something that each and every one of the major network newscasts did .... well, that's another thing entirely.

Compare the way Bush was castigated over the firing of some Attorneys General, and the way the major "news" broadcasts ignored the Fast and Furious investigation until they had no choice but to cover it. The Attorney General of the United States lied before Congress, then, months later, tried to amend his testimony, and Congress asked, basically, for the documents that led to the amended testimony. That's where this whole mess started .... and this guy is supposed to be the chief law enforcement official in the US. The networks ignored his behavior completely until the contempt vote. I know ..... I watched for coverage and found damn near zero until he was going to be tried in the House.

I seriously believe that the Obama administration could have someone killed on the street outside the White House ... someone just walking by, minding their own business, and the major news networks would claim that it was the guy who was shot's fault.

As far as the rest of your post ..... people called Bush everything imaginable. They compared him to an ape ..... they called him the devil ..... there was so much bile and vitriol on the part of so many on the left that it was amazing. (and disgusting) There are a couple of people who have questioned the birth certificate deal. So what? There have been very few who actually believed that line of attack. People called Bush "Hitler", and other vile things. Did you somehow sleep through all of that?

The most watched network news coverage in the country isn't network news coverage?

Network news coverage in general makes me sick, most especially CNN and pMSNBC. When you have people such as Ed Schultz, Rachael Maddow, and the worst of them all Chris Matthews giving their "opinions and expertise" about politics in general. Matthews gets a "thrill running up his leg" every time mr. obama speaks...hard to take him seriously as a journalist when he does his version of pillow talk where mr. obama is concerned.

It doesn't matter when the whole network tows the party line? Well, Sheppard Smith doesn't but he's the only man with integrity in that organization.

What about when a network broadcasts a doctored tape to try and take down a community organizer? Also, I don't condone what NBC did either. I rarely watch any of the big three networks. When I do, it's usually Fox for comedy.

It's because the "big issue" with the media is the economy and healthcare. We're so used to political scandals which makes no one want to care anymore. Also, the Weiner controversy got a fair amount of coverage from both sides.

I think it's a bit ridiculous to assume that. Then again, anything can happen in this country considering what's been going on with George Zimmerman.

People call each other names all the time. The difference this time around is that a network actually takes themselves seriously doing it. Anchors feel true about their feelings that Obama is a radical Marxist socialist muslim born in kenya who will usher in the Apocalypse. The sad part about that is there is a considerable part of the population in this country who actually believes that.

No, a whole network has dedicated much of their time to the issue. They've hosted many individuals who still doubt to this day. I still think it was a horrible move that Obama caved to all of the individuals.

No, that vitriol was very intense and much like what Obama faces today.

Both presidents faced similar treatment by the media - venom from their detractors (often on superficial issues), but for the most part treated with kid gloves, and not really called out onto the carpet.

Actually, I thought that you were talking about Rush with your initial comments.

FoxNews seems to have 2 sides, their actual news reporting, and their political commentary shows ...... much like MSNBC does in reverse. Unlike MSNBC though, I don't believe that Fox uses their commentators as reporters as well. (I seem to recall seeing Sharpton being used in some sort of news anchoring role not too long ago)

Regardless ..... if Fox is some horrific right wing organization, then you have Fox on one side ....... and ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, and others aligned on the other.

As far as your last line in your post ...... Bush was BLASTED by people relentlessly. He was called Satan, Hitler, an ape, and insulted on a daily basis by far too many sources to ever hope to count. The left in this country, for all of their talk of inclusion, is far less tolerant of political views than the right is. The right will debate ..... the left will downright vilify. The Tea Party events and the Occupy Wall Street events were excellent examples. The Tea Party was peaceful, polite, and cleaned up after themselves. Occupy Wall Street was vile, with drug use, violence, and sex in public. (not to mention using the streets as toilets)

However, look at how the media portrays the 2 groups ...... and you would swear that the reverse was true. The Tea Party had signs supporting their specific viewpoints. Activists on the left almost always have tons of signs that can't even be shown on TV because of the language ....... and with some of the most vile characterizations imaginable.

As far as Weiner, that was only covered because of the shock value. Same thing with the Clinton scandals. However, with Clinton, the news began to turn the story from Clinton's (and/or Hillary Clinton's) bad (and/or illegal) behavior into a story about how the right was unfairly persecuting them.

Again, as to your final line, you can claim ignorance about what happened 4-6 short years ago ...... but that doesn't mean it happened. The vile and horrible things that were said about Bush go light years beyond anything said about Obama.

Actually yeah .... pain pills. So what?

Regardless, it used to be that you could put "George Bush Hitler" into Google and get, literally, thousands of pages of results. Same with Satan. Monkey comparisons abounded. The vile and disgusting stuff written was beyond imagining.

The left berated and castigated Bush every chance they got. They reveled in vile and disgusting commentary. They used some of the most disgusting language and imagery imaginable.

Nothing Obama has had to endure comes even close.

Racism is definitely worse, but there has been surprisingly little racism against Obama.

Look at how Black Conservatives like Clarence Thomas and Herman Cain were treated by the left by comparison.

What the devil did you do to stretch the thread?

Any use of the N word is wrong in my opinion. I'm not going to even bother looking, but I wonder how many of those used with Obama were "My N" ...... as some Black people call one another?

OK, I had to go look now.

Many were the supposed use of the "N word" by Santorum.

Some were a black guy using the word at an Obama rally.

Others were vile and disgusting racist attacks.

I think that I wanna puke having looked at that crap.

Oh, and as far as your "Wow, just wow" ..... I used to work with a lot of Black kids. They would often use the phrase "That's my N ......." about someone they liked.

Ah ... sorry.

My mistake then.

However, many of those Googled sites were the Santorum mumble, where he was accused of calling Obama the "n" word.

Look up "George W Bush is Hitler", and you get some 11 million returns. Look up George W Bush is a fascist and you get some 3 million returns.

Kinda makes the other pale by comparison.

http://campaignstops.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/06/09/how-racist-are-we-ask-google/

This has actually been studied in some detail (in regards to Obama), the full study is here:
http://www.people.fas.harvard.edu/~sstephen/papers/RacialAnimusAndVotingSethStephensDavidowitz.pdf

Warning - I've starred out the n-word in what follows, the original article includes it in full text (which is the NY Times stance when the word itself is what is being discussed)

Quote:

Barack Obama won 52.9 percent of the popular vote in 2008 and 365 electoral votes, 95 more than he needed. Many naturally concluded that prejudice was not a major factor against a black presidential candidate in modern America. My research, a comparison of Americans’ Google searches and their voting patterns, found otherwise. If my results are correct, racial animus cost Mr. Obama many more votes than we may have realized.

Quantifying the effects of racial prejudice on voting is notoriously problematic. Few people admit bias in surveys. So I used a new tool, Google Insights, which tells researchers how often words are searched in different parts of the United States.

Can we really quantify racial prejudice in different parts of the country based solely on how often certain words are used on Google? Not perfectly, but remarkably well. Google, aggregating information from billions of searches, has an uncanny ability to reveal meaningful social patterns. “God” is Googled more often in the Bible Belt, “Lakers” in Los Angeles.

The conditions under which people use Google — online, most likely alone, not participating in an official survey — are ideal for capturing what they are really thinking and feeling. You may have typed things into Google that you would hesitate to admit in polite company. I certainly have. The majority of Americans have as well: we Google the word “porn” more often than the word “weather.”

And many Americans use Google to find racially charged material. I performed the somewhat unpleasant task of ranking states and media markets in the United States based on the proportion of their Google searches that included the word “****er(s).” This word was included in roughly the same number of Google searches as terms like “Lakers,” “Daily Show,” “migraine” and “economist.”

A huge proportion of the searches I looked at were for jokes about African-Americans. (I did not include searches that included the word “****a” because these searches were mostly for rap lyrics.) I used data from 2004 to 2007 because I wanted a measure not directly influenced by feelings toward Mr. Obama. From 2008 onward, “Obama” is a prevalent term in racially charged searches.

The state with the highest racially charged search rate in the country was West Virginia. Other areas with high percentages included western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio, upstate New York and southern Mississippi.

Once I figured out which parts of the country had the highest racially charged search rates, I could test whether Mr. Obama underperformed in these areas. I predicted how many votes Mr. Obama should have received based on how many votes John Kerry received in 2004 plus the average gain achieved by other 2008 Democratic Congressional candidates. The results were striking: The higher the racially charged search rate in an area, the worse Mr. Obama did.

Consider two media markets, Denver and Wheeling (which is a market evenly split between Ohio and West Virginia). Mr. Kerry received roughly 50 percent of the votes in both markets. Based on the large gains for Democrats in 2008, Mr. Obama should have received about 57 percent of votes in both Denver and Wheeling. Denver and Wheeling, though, exhibit different racial attitudes. Denver had the fourth lowest racially charged search rate in the country. Mr. Obama won 57 percent of the vote there, just as predicted. Wheeling had the seventh highest racially charged search rate in the country. Mr. Obama won less than 48 percent of the Wheeling vote.

Add up the totals throughout the country, and racial animus cost Mr. Obama three to five percentage points of the popular vote. In other words, racial prejudice gave John McCain the equivalent of a home-state advantage nationally.

Yes, Mr. Obama also gained some votes because of his race. But in the general election this effect was comparatively minor. The vast majority of voters for whom Mr. Obama’s race was a positive were liberal, habitual voters who would have voted for any Democratic presidential candidate. Increased support and turnout from African-Americans added only about one percentage point to Mr. Obama’s totals.

If my findings are correct, race could very well prove decisive against Mr. Obama in 2012. Most modern presidential elections are close. Losing even two percentage points lowers the probability of a candidate’s winning the popular vote by a third. And prejudice could cost Mr. Obama crucial states like Ohio, Florida and even Pennsylvania.

There is the possibility, of course, that racial prejudice will play a smaller role in 2012 than it did in 2008, now that the country is familiar with a black president. Some recent events, though, suggest otherwise. I mentioned earlier that the rate of racially charged searches in West Virginia was No. 1 in the country and that the state showed a strong aversion to Mr. Obama in 2008. It recently held its Democratic presidential primary, in which Mr. Obama was challenged by a convicted felon. The felon, who is white, won 41 percent of the vote.

In 2008, Mr. Obama rode an unusually strong tail wind. The economy was collapsing. The Iraq war was unpopular. Republicans took most of the blame. He was able to overcome the major obstacle of continuing racial prejudice in the United States. In 2012, the tail wind is gone; the obstacle likely remains.

Sure, racism is a terrible thing.

Anybody care to discuss what percentage of Black people voted for the white candidate?

Or is it not racism just because you can't properly pronounce the N word? Most blacks I have discussed this with think it is a hilarious joke.

Of course, "whitey" and "honkey" are totally acceptable. My personal favorite is "pink .".

Anyone who uses the "N-Bomb" in private should feel obliged to use it in public.

I'd much rather they speak it out loud and show the world where they stand, rather than hide it or couch it in not-so-clever 'code words' that everybody knows (and can smell).

One of the most telling things about people is the words they use under the anonymity of the internet. True, a person can be anyone he chooses to be, but I think that the lion's share of posters project who they really are because it's [relatively] safe to do so. This board has a great number of "good eggs," and I love coming here because of it.... but I've been to some sites that make me want to take a long, hot shower. These people are also our neighbors, co-workers, and fellow church congregants.

But unless you're a fly on the wall of a Klan meeting, you'll almost NEVER hear this talk in public. Secretive, shady, [imo] shameful.... but it's out there- and it's never too far beneath the surface.

Kinda makes me shudder just a little bit to think of it.

My problem with the use of the "N" is the number of times I hear that word spoken by a black person to another black person as a term of endearment.

Comedians loooove to use the word to get a laugh.

In my own life, I hear that word used more -as I stated above - than in any other fashion.

The 2nd most modern incarnation of that use was during the '70's, as a way for AfAms to steal ownership of it from EuroAms. The philosophy was that by using it themselves, they took the sting away from having it used against them. Even then, the pronunciation was slightly altered to differentiate it from what had been heard since the 1600's.

Never did sign on with that philosophy, so it's not used by me in that way.

The most recent usage by the hip hop community is an extension of the 70's movement. Needless to say, I haven't signed onto this one either.

If a comedian is using it for a laugh, it's a cheap laugh... and doesn't really make me chuckle.

Look- any way it's sliced, it's just an ugly word... with an ugly origin, ugly connotation, and ugly emotional weight that has no place in decent society.... no matter who uses it. No excuses from anybody, afaic.

This still doesn't take anything way from the message in the article quoted by Lyuokdea.... as I seriously doubt that the linked sites the author visited were posted by Blacks.... nor does it take away anything from my assertion that some folks will say any heinous thing they can get away with, if they think their identities are hidden- which brings me back to my original point, phrased as a question"

If someone's a bigot (and that's truly them), why would he bother hiding that fact? Especially if he doesn't care what 'decent society' thinks?

Tell you this much [and I never thought I'd witness myself uttering anything like this]: I have more respect for David Duke and Tom Metzger than I do any closet bigot. Reprehensible as they may be, at the very least: they're not hypocrites.

Clemmy - gotta agree with you. (or, rather instead of "gotta", perhaps I should say "I do agree" with you)

When I hear people say the n word - whether it ends with an R or an A - I think "idiot". Black people using it? I feel they lack self respect, OR have no clue what it means. White people saying it? I see bigot.

I'm not one to agree with the whole "african american" thing......or "european american" thing. Are you american or not - that's the question, in my humble opinion.

Let's face it - there just aren't many - if any - "african americans" (none) that were slaves. There aren't any white americans that were slave owners. Yes, there are descendants of both. But how far back do we have to go - how much further forward do we have to go - to get rid of it - not the word itself, but the attitude. Too many people just don't get it.

In terms of noticing how people use the word in a closeted, online fashion (or just when they know they're in 'like-minded' company), I think the people who do that hide their bigotry in person (and sometimes online) because they know such overt racism will harm their credibility in whatever arguments they're set to make. So in a sense, bigotry hasn't gone away at all, it's just learned to acquire a slight sense of eloquence.

4yikes:

That's a world which is, and has always been, closed to me. Always has been. As such, I'll leave that sort of judgement to you. Even though I'm many shades "lighter" than many of my family and friends, I still could never hide where I came from, given my personal appearance. Many's the time I've walked into a room, and all conversation halted. Now... that could be attributed to several factors, none the least of which could be:

1. They were talking about a friend of mine
2. They were talking about a sensitive subject that NOBODY else should hear
3. They were talking about me (in areas other than ethnicity)
4. [name another... ANY other reasonable explanation here]

...so they always got the benefit of the doubt from me. Always- because NONE of us is a mind reader.

That said- I grew up in Lima, OH... not a town that's known for tact or diplomacy. The town is populated with a majority of citizens who thought nothing of asking outright: "what the hell ARE you?"... so you'll perhaps understand if I assume at least a percentage of those folks who stopped talking did so right after dropping an "F-Bomb."

Your assertion that bigotry has just moved underground (and acquired a slightly elevated sense of eloquence) speaks to my point, which I'll now make outright.... instead of being polite, and 'beating around the bush' with rhetorical questions:

1. They do so, because they know that the rest of the world sees life differently than they.
2. They do so, not because it's "Politically Incorrect," but because it's just "Plain Incorrect."
3. They do so, because they know that stating it out loud brands them for life with folks whose opinions matter to them
4. They do so, because in their soul of souls, they know it's a personal flaw and a character weakness that should be kept hidden from the eyes of collective judgement, (Yes.... even the most virulent of bigots have something of a conscience...)

Cowards, they are... and their very behavior bears it out. They'd much rather hide beneath 5 layers of 'socialspeak camouflage' than be outed for the people they really are.

SOMETHING must be behind that. I can only guess what that is.

2+ years ago, I had some epic showdowns with a poster known as USNavyDawg (Ret.) . We NEVER saw eye-to-eye on the subject of racial issues in America, because we came into America from 2 totally different family histories and political mindsets. Nevertheless, Navy spoke his views on ethnicity with candor and honesty. As such, I always engaged him with respect, even though I found many of his views to be abhorrent, myopic, and lacking in empathy, nuance or understanding. Even so, we managed to debate the issues for months, without either vowing to take the other out.

This is why I say that I'd rather debate a staunch bigot face-up-front, than have to deal with a closet bigot who plays 'word games,' and skirts issues and obfuscates when the spotlight of candor is trained upon him. Iknow where Navy stands... and I know that we'll probably never agree on issues of race. BUT....

One thing Navy had in his favor: he was always willing to engage in candid, no-holds-barred conversation. That's a person I might someday be able to make an impression on... and who might be able to make an impression on me.

The cowards? Not so much. They'd rather play the role of "Dick Dodge," and remain true to an unchallenged train of thought. Those people wren't worthy of my respect or response... and I already know who they are, from their past posts.

The stench is all over them.... it can't be hidden.

While I know this topic has strayed from the original theme, I do have an open question.

Why is it so hard for us, as American citizens, to talk about issues regarding race?

Why do you assume it's hard for citizens to talk about it? Most people I know aren't afraid to voice their feelings on racial issues. However, it is difficult for public figures to discuss race because of the way the media jumps on every word and tries to create controversy.

I believe in general it is a combination of thin skinned easily offended folks and others who truly do not wish to have a dialog rather a monologue whereby people of other viewpoints have to sit down and shut up.

I honestly feel that when it comes to race relations and having a frank open discussion you have to accept that some things are going to be said that while you may find difficult to swallow, they need to be said and discussed.

I have held numerous discussions on the matter and have always left better informed and a better man.
