Newton charging $125-$175 at autograph signing in Charlotte mall The Sports Xchange/CBSSports.com http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/19577...arlotte-mall#sfPanthers quarterback Cam Newton will appear at an autograph signing at a mall in Charlotte on Saturday, but his ink won't be cheap. According to the Charlotte Observer, Newton is asking $125 to sign a photo, $150 to sign a football and $175 if he scratches his name on a jersey or shirt. Want it personalized? Sure, he'll do that for an extra $50. The Observer reports Saturday's event is Newton's sixth for GT Sports Marketing, the company he signed with out of Auburn. Newton is scheduled to sign from 1:30 to 4 p.m., immediately after Bo Jackson and before former NBA player Larry Johnson. Newton's marketing agent at IMG told the paper his client signed with an autograph company to avoid fake or unauthorized merchandise. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I dont have a problem with it. I think it drives up the price for collectors and makes for less fake merchandise. Heck, they deserve the money more than anybody else for the signing. But I dont think Cam Newton is proven enough for me to pay this much.

I always see Cam Newton rated in the top 10 but I always think he's anywhere from 12-15, definitely not in Top 10. So can someone just basically argue with me telling me why he's such a good quarterback? Also I have no doubt about his potential, I believe in a few years he'll be a top 6 QB. His 6 wins were against 5 horrible teams, who had a combined record of 20-60, and the Texans who had clinched division and were without Schaub. I feel his amazing rookie stats are a bit inflated by the fact that panthers weren't always in competetive games and cam played in a lot of garbage time. I may not be accounting for his impressive running stats but I only watched 3 panthers games last year so a lot of my opinions on Cams are made on stats. Cam has decent supporting cast with Steve Smith and a top 10 o-line. Here are just a few other stats that make me feel that Newtons was greatly helped by not being in more close games
Games ending with final margin of 1-14 pts: 3-8 Record, 3,157 Yards, 60% (235-391), 14 TDs, 15 INTs, 445 Rush Yards (5.2 Y/C), 10 TDs, 4 Fumbles
Behind by one score: 1,303 Yards, 55.3% (89-161), 6 TDs, 7 INTs, 157 Rush Yards (5.4 Y/C), 3 TDs, 2 Fumbles
4th Quarter +/- 7 517 Yards, 50% (40-80), 2 TDs, 2 INTs, 51 Rush Yards (4.6 Y/C), 0 TDs, 0 Fumbles

He's the first overall pick, won a national championship, and the heisman... he can charge IMO... but his prices are much higher than I would have expected.

He threw for 21 TDs and ran for 14 more. Chances are that most QBs will never score 35 TDs in any season of their career. He did it as a rookie. That's pretty special. 12 NFL teams scored 35 or fewer TDs last year. (we were one of them. We only scored ...... ugh ...... 21 total TDs last year, or as many as Newton threw for)
His team scored 48 TDs last year. That was 5th in the NFL, behind Green Bay, New Orleans, New England, and Detroit. Overall, his team was also 5th in scoring.
I'd take that from a rookie QB on our team any day ...... no matter who we played.

Nah, he'd have to give the poor and middle class free autographs ... you know ... to be fair .... then charge the millionaires and billionaires a mandatory additional 5% tax on their income to cover it.
I seriously wonder how many professional athletes would be pro-Obama if they sat down and realized that he wants to raise their taxes by 4%. (whatever it is this week) For a guy making $800,000 ... hardly rich in NFL terms .... that amounts to an additional $32,000 in taxes. Probably not back breaking ..... but a noticeable chunk given the rest that already comes out of his earnings.

Meh....if people will pay, then charge them. Simple as that.
Also, if it's free then 5,000+ people lineup and he's there forever (or leaves a lot of unhappy people when he can't stay to get everyone). He loses no matter what.
Most of the people in line are just d-bags that will turn around and sell it on eBay. So who cares.

The discussion isn/t about if he's a great QB or not,, that's for another debate.
The discussion here is, why is he charging for his autograph?

He's charging for an autograph because if someone is going to make money on it, it might as well be him. If he gives it away and it winds up on ebay some schmuck gets the cash for his donation. If he sells it then someone who wants it is paying for it and chances are pretty good they can't sell it for more on ebay.

I think it would be appropriate if events like these came with an age cut-off to try and prevent the reselling of his memorabilia. To be completely fair, what do grown men need with an autograph? Let the kids get an autograph for free, and let that be that. Paying $150 is absurd.
I want the Cleveland Browns to be my pallbearers so they can let me down for the last time.

There were maybe two games where you could say Cam played in garbage time losses, against the Titans and the Saints. In those two games he combined for 370 yards and one touchdown. Hardly stat padding. Check out how many games there were where Carolina was within a point or two or actually leading going into the fourth, and the other team scored 14, 17, 21 points in the fourth quarter. Their defense was horrendous. Put even Cleveland's defense on Carolina last year and they probably win 10 games.

Well, most athlete's and movie stars can tell story after story about some kid asking for their autograph, signing and then seeing the kid proceed to give the item to a dude 30 feet away for a $20. It happens all the time.

Exactly what I was going to say ... I used to hate that athletes charged for autographs, but now I can see exactly why they do it. This isn't an event for kids ... it's an event for collectors.

Cam Newton doesn't charge anything for an autograph, the headline is misleading.
He(or any athlete) gets paid an appearance fee by the memoribilia company, or the show and they set the prices charges. Now, obviously Cams appearance fee must be pretty high so the company charges more in order to make a profit.
Its simple supply and demand though, this company wouldn't be doing it if enough people weren't willing to pay the price to make it profitable.

The funny part about this is, getting an autograph personalized, devalues the signature.

Newton charging $125-$175 at autograph signing in Charlotte mall The Sports Xchange/CBSSports.com http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/19577...arlotte-mall#sf
Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will appear at an autograph signing at a mall in Charlotte on Saturday, but his ink won't be cheap.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I dont have a problem with it. I think it drives up the price for collectors and makes for less fake merchandise. Heck, they deserve the money more than anybody else for the signing. But I dont think Cam Newton is proven enough for me to pay this much.
...and people are dumb enough to pay it. More power to the players, agreed... they deserve to be the ones to profit from it, but I have trouble fathoming people actually spend that kind of money for somebody's signature.

J/C I know that as said above the player is paid by the event to be there and they set the price on how much the sig costs. The player is willing to sit down for 4 hours sometimes more just meeting and signing his autograph which if the people want I see nothing wrong with. The people paying for the sig know the cost up front and if it's something you really want it would be well worth the cost. If your paying 180$ for a jersey with the guys name on the back paying 150$ to have him actually sign it in no way seems like a stretch to me. About the same cost of dinner and movie for me and my wife 4x a year.
People who dont feel that its worth that amount of money dont have to pay it anyway so again I personally dont see a big issue with it.

Would you pay $175 for a George Washington signature??
I would.

Someone I know has every browns hall of famer on a helmet with the exception of Ozzie Newsome. He was somewhere where both he and Otto Graham were signing and was limited on time so he went with Otto. Otto ended up dying not all that long after so he definitely made the right choice.. now he just has to hunt down Ozzie.

It's a market driven business. They will charge what the market is willing to pay. I'm sure they did their research and decided what price will maximize their profits.

Newton’s autograph session draws roughly 300 Posted by Mike Florio on July 15, 2012, 6:16 AM EDT
The market has spoken.
With Panthers quarterback Cam Newton conducting in Charlotte on Saturday a for-pay autograph session, with prices ranging from $125 to $175 plus $50 for personalization, a crowd of roughly 300 showed up for the event, according to the Raleigh News & Observer.
A pair of brothers drove 3.5 hours from Atlanta to get a signed jersey and a signed helmet, respectively. But they didn’t bring Panthers gear; the Dooleys went to Auburn.
Overall, the session could be regarded as a disappointment. With 2.5 hours set aside for the signings, Newton, who declined comment, was finished in roughly an hour.
With a lower price point, he likely would have been there longer.
And that’s how America works. Goods and services are provided at a cost. If the cost is too high, fewer will respond.
Still, if all 300 spent an average of $150, Newton grossed $45,000 for an hour of his time. Which isn’t a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Do you get certificates of authenticity with the autographs? (I mean in general)
I have heard that there is a HUGE market in forgeries and fakes.

No, from what I understand they are pretty much meaningless.
A reciept is better proof of purchase, which you get when you buy your ticket to get in line.

Did anyone ever watch Ball Boys on ABC? I never watched it until today. Its like Pawn Stars but all about signed sports memorabilia. Today, they had a guy come in looking for Browns memorabilia. He ended up buying Otto Graham signed game worn spikes for $550. They showed a nice collection from a Browns only collector.
