Theyve unofficially started with soccer being played yesterday and today! Lets discuss...

USA Women's soccer looked good after a rough start scoring 4 straight to beat France. Kudos to them.
North Korean women beat Colombia after a flag snafu (showed the South Korean flag on the jumbotron and they refused to come out for over an hour)

I'm watching United Arab Emirates and Uruguay in Men's soccer and its shameful that our men couldnt qualify...No idea why we used our U-20 team to try to qualify...stupid. These two teams are horrible. UAE looks okay, but Uruguay sucks something fierce.

That Greek Triple Jumper was removed from the olympics by her country for a remark about so many africans being there that West Nile mosquitos will be eating up everyone's food (at least theyd be eating the africans foods first...her words)

Opening ceremonies tomorrow!

Its the Olympics! Discuss!

I was disappointed to find Olympic Park closed yesterday. We traveled 45 mins to only be able to get some distant views of the stuff. It was still cool, just wish I was there one more day. The torch went right by the hotel I was staying at this morning as well. Oh well...

Looking forward to watch the games.

Actually this is what she said... "With so many Africans in Greece, the West Nile mosquitoes will be getting home food!!!".

It's also worth noting that it was Greece who pulled her from their team, not the Olympic Committee...

Also heard that when they were introducing the North Korean soccer team in a game against South Korea they displayed the South Korean flag by mistake... Couldn't have happened in a worse way for the IOC.... It is funny though to hear the comments from NK, on having their team associated with that flag you would think somebody sold one of their kids into slavery or executed somebody for talking ill of the government... oh wait, that would have been acceptable in NK.. never mind.

I'll watch enjoy some of the track & field events, some of the swiming events were the forgen judges cant screw us like they do every olympics.

Saddly Boxing scoring with forgen judges has become so political many times the winner is about what country your from not how you box,

Used to love watching the boxing but lately it's gotten pretty sad.

I'm not really a big fan of the Summer games. I don't know how much of it I'll actually tune in for. Maybe some of the soccer. My wife loves the gymnastics, so I'll probably end up watching some of that as well.

The Olympics are my favorite sporting event. Summer or winter doesn't matter. I attended the 2006 Olympics in Torino, Italy and it was the trip of a lifetime.

I plan on going to as many Olympics as I can afford. Unfortunately that's not right now...but 2016 in Brazil? Maybe.

As an amateur athlete it's an amazing culmination of your years/decades of hard work. It comes around only every 4 years. You're representing the best of your country. It's a celebration of sport. I love it.

I'll be glued to the swimming but I'll also catch as much other events as I can.

Go USA!

I enjoyed the Olympics more when they had the summer and winter in the same year, then you had to wait 4 long years.... now it seems like an Olympics is either just starting or just finishing all the time... it has lost some of that specialness it used to have.

I will watch sporadically then I will watch more as the medal rounds get closer... and if this year is like other years, I will end up watching a lot more than I plan to.

not to mention they have so many "world championships" for almost all ofthe sports and there's the World Cup for soccer and everything is more available to watch now.

Completely agreed!!
The worst thing they ever did was to stagger them 2 years apart like this.

I still remember watching the Olympic torch in 96 when the games were in Atlanta... a friend of mine got selected to run as an escort with the torch bearer... was pretty neat...

If I'm not mistaken, Olympic teams are supposed to be U-23 anyway (with maybe a few exemptions), so using a U20 team wouldn't be TOO huge of a stretch. Maybe the coaches got a little too cocky, and wanted to give the younger guys some international experience.

My favorite part is the last names. For most other countries, their last names are pretty uniform. You can tell the people from Sweden usually.

But the U.S. has all kinds of last names, all different ethnicities. Reminds me of why this is a great country.

Ive heard this too...

why is that the case in soccer? Janet Evans is 42 or so and still competing. In basketball you can be any age...why is it different in soccer?

You are correct Excl, you're allowed 3 "senior" exemptions (over 23).

As for Steve

but Uruguay sucks something fierce.

Uruguay's Olympic team is absolutely loaded and one of the favorites. Keep in mind most of these guys are 20-22 years old. They have Suarez (a great forward for Liverpool), Cavani (the best player for Napoli and someone who will be moving to a huge club sooner rather than later). Add to that, they have Gaston Ramirez, Sebastian Coates, Nicolas Lodeiro and Abel Hernandez. All of those guys are young players who will be playing in the World Cup in 2 years ( a tournament which Uruguay has a very real chance of winning). I would be shocked if this Olympic team couldn't beat the senior USA team.

Youre right...literally as soon as I wrote that Uruguay got their first and continued to hammer on UAE and got their 2nd not far after. They did look good after they got going...but man they looked horrible for the first 30. So many giveaways and such.

I dont understand the olympic tourney for mens soccer only using u-23 teams because every other sport, including womens soccer is allowed to use any age.

If Janet Evans can be 42 and compete, why cant landon donovan, clint dempsey, mike bradley, wayne rooney, thierry henry etc if they want and as a group be above 23...

i dont understand taht rule whatsoever. Every other sport is fine...but mens soccer?

Caught a bit of the opening ceremonies last night... I've never been a huge fan of them but always like to see how the torch is lit... not bad overall from what I saw... I was surprised that there was no Elton John with all the other musical talent they had... and Paul McCartney looked like a friggin Barbie doll with all the make-up and botox...

I am LOVING all the sports this morning... I'm switching between 4 channels and catching un-edited content online! I LOVE the olympcs... I should take a few days off work to watch them...

but anyone else a huge swimming fan?? I was surprised to see Phelps sand-bag his prelims this morning as much as he did... I understand that you want to use the least amount of energy to make the finals, but man... he had to out-touch someone at the end there just to make the finals.. now he'll be in an outside lane... could make for an interesting final. I think Lotche wins the 400 IM but Phelps still medals... maybe his first Silver?

Ok, where are the womens beach vollyball pics? Oh that's right, it's 50 degrees and a lot of the girls are wearing long sleeves...

I did see the Belgian field hockey team though, might have to watch a little more field hockey.

Here's your shot of the day, DC:

The Brazilian team seems a little less talented this year ...

Although, I do like that they label their uniform parts.

When I was at Kent State, I'd see the field hockey players a lot. For being somewhat of a tough sport, they were fine to look at, though I was scared to approach them.

Tough to see Jordyn Wieber's reaction last night when she didn't qualify for the women's gymnastics all-around. Gotta be tough as a team when she's breaking down because she didn't make it (and was a favorite for the gold, IIRC) and her teammate does make it. But, with the glory of the Olympics comes some heartbreak, too, I guess.

it's gotta be tougher when she got 4th overall in the world to an event that takes the "top24" individuals but cannot compete because she finished 3rd for her country.

http://espn.go.com/olympics/summer/2012/results/_/sport/21/event/132

Rie Tanaka (27th - makes the final) had an average of 13.58 per event
Jordan has an average over 15

Yep. That's why I hate the "each team can only place 2 people" rules. I understand the Olympics want to get more countries involved, but if the idea is to get the absolute best 24 people competing against each other, then let the top 24 people compete. If it ends up that Malaysia or Tunisia doesn't have anyone in there and the US has 5, then so be it.

Well ..... some people might feel bad if they couldn;t move on from the opening round ..... so you have to make it "fairer" ...... and allow those who are not as good to still move on over those who are better performers.

Man, that sounds a lot like the road we're on with our economic philosophy .....

Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

yea its a shame that the whole everybody gets a participation trophy is extending to the highest levels of sport now.

Whats next...the Browns/Colts/Redskins get to have participation rings at the end of each season because they tried their hardest?

Or the TWolves/Bucks/Bobcats get the same size rings as the Heat?

maybe the Blue Jackets and Sabres should get rings too...they played hard all season...

Phew! Glad we didn't go TOO long without unnecessary political commentary!

Back on topic, my wife and I were discussing which athletes are truly the best "athletes." I mean, basketball players and swimmers are all in tremendous shape. But, I think my vote would have to go to the gymnasts. They not only need strength and flexibility but also endurance.

But that's not to take away from any of the other ones.

I saw some of the male gymnast floor exercise stuff...

Unbelieveable, multiple flips in the air, and being able to hold themselves up on outstretched arms...insane.

So far ive come away the most impressed with

Weightlifting...completing a clean n jerk with 400 pounds is unreal...women too
Gymnasts...their overall strength and control of their body is amazing
Table Tennis...watched some female table tennis yesterday and it makes me want to never play regular table tennis against someone who is also bad like me...theyre unbelieveable.

If you get a chance, watch Ashton Eaton in the decathlon. If you want to see the best all-around athlete on the planet right now, it's him.

Here are his personal bests. If you follow track and field like me, you know how ridiculous these accomplishments are:

100 meters: 10.21 seconds
400 meters: 45.68 seconds
1500 meters: 4:14.48
110 meter hurdles: 13.35 seconds
Long Jump: 27'
High Jump: 6' 11"

Discus: 150'
Javelin: 200'+

Tennis players are up there in my book. Strength, speed, explosiveness, reflexes, agility, conditioning...you need it all to be a top tennis player. And you're out there, just you and your opponent, for as much as three to five hours in many cases.

NBC Responds: We Removed The Opening Ceremony Memorial To Terrorism Victims Because The Tribute Wasn’t About America
http://deadspin.com/5930048/nbc-responds...t-about-america
Quote:

NBC finally responded to overwhelming criticism of its decision to heavily edit coverage of Friday's opening ceremony with an answer that satisfied neither American fans nor Olympic organizers. Claiming "our programming is tailored for our American audience," NBC spokesperson Greg Hughes defended the network's choice to replace the "Abide With Me" memorial performance with a Ryan Seacrest interview of Michael Phelps.

The segment's choreographer and visionary for the memorial to victims of London's 7/7 attacks reacted angrily at a press conference this weekend, being quoted by Reuters as having said: "Is it not accessible enough? Is it not commercial enough?"

As our friend Louis said over on Gawker this weekend, it's a remarkably tone-deaf response from NBC. It does, however, demonstrate exactly how NBC views the Olympics and how differently it does so compared to the rest of the world's broadcasters.

Everywhere else in the world—including places like China and Saudi Arabia—the Olympics are considered a major international news story, worthy of coverage as such and, thus, live and as uninterrupted as possible. Comparisons include the Royal Wedding (which NBC *did* show live in its entirety) or a natural disaster like a tsunami. Our editor emeritus Will Leitch says the Olympics aren't sports, but reality TV; he's right, only insofar as an American perspective goes, though. We're conditioned to think we should be fed our salad pre-tossed because that's how we've always received it; NBC has taken this liberty we've given them and used it to craft narratives that do not actually exist and to eliminate the ones they'd rather we not see.

What NBC did with the opening ceremony is, then, simply a stand-in for the manipulation they engage in with all their prime-time coverage. What you see at night on NBC's Olympic coverage didn't actually happen, but is instead an NBC-forged simulacrum of what the Olympic day was like. They recreate a sequence of events that never actually happened by using footage of things that actually did. Maybe we're okay with that, but NBC dismissing complaints of anyone who isn't okay with it is not, well, okay.

Most Americans are fairly myopic... if it's not about us, we don't care.. everybody else is supposed to care about us, but that feeling is not reciprocated... of course we watch death and destruction and reality TV like royal weddings.. but most meaningful stuff we have no interest in... so I can see why NBC did what they did, though I disagree with it.

I will disagree with this though, nobody "gave" NBC the liberty to do anything... NBC paid nearly a billion dollars for the rights to broadcast the Olympics in the manner they see fit.

People are seriously complaining about the opening ceremonies? Really? Does anyone actually pay any attention to this pomp and circumstance event that has tried it's best over the years to become a bad broadway musical? I thought we'd lost it when we were complaining about who made the uni's they were going to march in, now it's how NBC decided to keep viewers interested in an otherwise extremely boring few hours of tv, because they cut some section of it or didn't do it live? Was there an outcome that was spoiled by showing it a few hours late? Was there really suspense here that predicated seeing it live? Did the torch not get lit? I must admit, watching the worlds largest gas grill get fired up is edge of your seat kind of television viewing, well if you're waiting for it to explode. Other than that, meh...

I flipped it on a few times over the weekend to see women's basketball, the US was slaughtering some other team from BFE, it was 20-0 or somewhere close to that when the other team finally made a basket, the cheers went up and it was a big deal they even scored. How could I not stay tuned to that? I flipped it over to one of the cable stations NBC owns to see what they were showing, men's beach vollyball. Grown men you've never heard of playing 2 on 2 volleyball on a fake beach, indoors, color me interested (should be in purple). I switched the channel again and found rapid paddling, this is a sport? Two guys in a kayak going down some fake rapids trying to steer their kayak though some gates (colored sticks suspended above the water) making sure each of their heads went through the gate and if you missed it you could go back and go through it again while the announcers are excited about the perfect score they were racking up.

The Olympics has grown stale, now if they put those two kayaked paddlers in a real river with some class 6 rapids where its going to take the ultimate skill to keep from cracking your boat up, that would be compelling. Forget the gates, just survive and do it faster than the other two. After all these are supposed to be the best in the world at what they do.

The Olympics has grown stale,

Those things have always happened at the Olympics.. well I don't know that all of them have but many of these events have been part of the Olympics for a long time, the difference is that nobody ever saw them because the Olympics wasn't on 12 channels 24 hours a day. Primetime Olympic coverage included gymnastics, swimming, mens basketball, some volleyball and a few select other things and it generally only included medal rounds, not qualifiers.

By the way, did anybody else notice the contrast when they talked about Missy Franklin who lives at home, goes to high school, swims on the high school team, has friends, has a life... and won a gold medal at the age of 17.... then they talked about the one male Chinese gymnast who has been home a total of 17 days since 1998 because he has been training for the Olympics.
