Hey, mutt.... I can understand your appreciation of a well-turned calf, a pretty smile, and a fine set of lines....
...but for some reason, synchro just creeps me out.
Don't get me wrong- it's incredibly athletic, and it's impressive what they can do.... but when they do their thing, all I can see is a "wet Rockette."
And don't get me started on "rhythmic gymnastics," either. JMO, but the Olympics should not have a place for little girls who play with balls, hoops and ribbons. A gold medal in that sport is every bit as gold as Alison Felix's 200m medal.
...and that just don't seem right.

Yup, count me in the group that "doesn't get it". It looks hard and a ton of work......but I don't get it. And their hair and make-up....awful and scary. But then again, I don't really get excited for swimming events either. You know Daniel Tosh's joke on competitive swimming, "...that thing you instinctively do before drowning."

Punch:
I swam for my HS team, so I get the racing aspect. No judges. No freakish make-up (LMAO). Splash & dash... the clock tells all. During the Olympics, I don't miss a single heat.
But them girls-

Congrats to the US women on soccer gold. HOWEVER... were the tacky and crass Nike t-shirts distributed after the game really necessary?? I had hoped we would act like we've been there before. Guess not...

"Greatness has been found" with, of course, a prominent Nike swoosh on the shoulder. It isn't the t-shirts that bother me though. It's the timing of them. They were distributed before the teams even had a chance to shake hands. IMO, totally inappropriate in an Olympic setting.

We live in a "post-decorum" world now. Such things a class, manners, and taste are taking a back seat to commercialization, bravado and self-promotion, day by day (These are generalities, of course... one could see tons of examples of sportsmanship and ;good behavior this week, as well...).
I blame Nike for this particular display of crassness more than anyone else. It's not like their logo isn't featured on every single uni and pair of shoes already.
Perhaps a more appropriate time for sporting those t-shirts would have been at the studio interviews afterward?
But what do I know? ....My Folks raised me to behave more modestly in public.

Don't know if anyone else saw it, but being a former 400m runner in college, I was watching the 4x400m prelims today. The lead-off runner for the US, Manteo Mitchell, broke his right fibula 200m into the race. Somehow, he was able to keep running, finish, and split a 46 second 400m, putting the US team into the finals where they are still expected to win gold (maybe not now, since they have lost 3 of there top runners due to injury). Truly a gutsy run! Mile Split.com Story

Usain is the 1st man in Olympic history to sweep the 100m and 200m dash...twice. To everybody who said I didn't know history when I said he was the greatest athlete I'd seen in my brief 22 years on this Earth, I say Usain Bolt just made my argument a lot more solid.

I don't know if I'd call him the greatest athlete.....the best sprinter, sure.
Outside of running in the 100 and 200, what else has he done (I saw a clip of him playing soccer and he wanted to join ManU....doubt that)?
...and I don't ask this in a mean way, I literally don't know what else he's done.

IMHO, the reigning "top all-around athlete" is the man who wins gold in the decathlon.
Currently, that man is American athlete Ashton Eaton (Bend, Oregon).
BTW... I'm attached to this athlete, by virtue of the "6 degrees of separation":
Ashton Eaton's Momz is a 1st cousin to a close college classmate of mine. I know that Lynn is going nutzazz crazy, as this week winds down.
I am too.... because this is the closest relationship I've ever had with an Olympic athlete.
Friend---> 1st Family---> 2nd Family..... GOLD!!!
USA...USA...USA!!!

just depends on if you think the 200/400 is tougher than the 100/200, which I do.
and I agree with those that restrict this to "sprinter" and not "athlete" running fast is a very specific skill, while many in other fields have to show an ability to control multiple skills at once.

Male Athletes Fight for the Right to Synchronized Swim in the Olympics Wednesday, August 08, 2012
The London Games are being called the Olympics for equality, specifically when it comes to women. For the first time, each competing country has both a female and male athlete.
But not every event in the Olympics is gender equal. While most of us are accustomed to seeing women play soccer and none of us bat an eye at women running, men are still prohibited from competing in some sports — specifically synchronized swimming.
An all-male synchronized swimming team in London has petitioned the International Olympic Committee to change that. George Gardiner is a squad member of "Out to Swim Angels" of London.

I'm not one for women's sports. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against it, I just don't want to watch. But man, good women's soccer is incredible. They go hard, they don't flop, they truly work together as a team. I watched the women's world cup last year all the way to the final. This year I didn't get to see much because of the times for the games, but congrats team USA

I watched the USA vs KOR woman's volleyball game last night and it was a good game to watch. The US team won 3 games to 0 but all three games Korea was in it. The US girls has to go on an 8-2 run to win the second game.

That's not why people said you didn't know history ... You said:

Usain is the only man to (cleanly) repeat in the 100m
Which isn't true ... two others had repeated before Bolt in the 100.

From Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Lewis
Quote:
It was revealed that Lewis tested positive three times before the 1988 Olympics for pseudoephedrine, ephedrine, and phenylpropanolamine, banned stimulants and bronchodilators also found in cold medication, and had been banned from the Seoul Olympics and from competition for six months. The USOC accepted his claim of inadvertent use and overturned the decision. Fellow Santa Monica Track Club teammates Joe DeLoach and Floyd Heard were also found to have the same banned stimulants in their systems, and were cleared to compete for the same reason.[75][76]
The positive results occurred at the Olympic Trials in July 1988 where athletes were required to declare on the drug-testing forms "over-the-counter medication, prescription drugs and any other substances you have taken by mouth, injection or by suppository."
For all intents and purposes, he should have been suspended. That's why I put "clean" in quotes.
Who's the other guy? I looked through the list and saw no repeat winners.

You also have to equate "greatest athlete" with nothing but straight line speed.. which I'm not prepared to do. For my money, gymnasts are better athletes when you consider lower and upper body strength, agility, coordination, stamina, etc... And thats the problem with debating "Greatest" anything, first you have to define the parameters and you usually can't get everybody to agree.

The other is Archie Hahn, who won in 1904 and 1906 ... although the 1906 games isn't technically an official IOC Olympics depending on who you ask. It was put on by the Greek OC, who hosted the original games in 1896.

I would really love to be able to get excited about the Olympics ..... but I just can't make myself care all that much. I like that we're winning medals ..... but most of the events bore me.

I am SO hoping they are showing the 5k on TV live... if not... I'll be watching it online... this should be a HUGE race
You've got three Americans who all have a shot at medalling... Rupp who just got silver in the 10k, Lagat who is one of the best middle/long distance runners of this era, and then Lomong who has moved up to the 5k this year and has great speed.... Then you've got the home town favorite in Farah then you've got 5 west africans who have all gone under 12:50... should be a great race... I'll be interested to see if the Ethiopians and Kenyan's try to take it out quickly or decide to just slow it down and let the kickers try to take it at the end....

Actually I believe that was the world championships last year... which means she's fallen in the last two world finals... I felt bad too... she's a good runner and has good finishing speed.. I don't know if she would have won but she would have been in contention for a medal.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!
Written in black
Man what a good 5k! Farah with the double! Just an amazing Olympics by him... felt bad for Lagat... in perfect position to medal and got tripped with 100m to go and STILL almost got the bronze... I was really hoping Lomong would medal! Took the lead at 400m and i thought with his speed he'd be able to hold on for a medal... but I dunno... I'll be interesting to hear from him because there were a couple times during the race when it looked like he was struggling a bit... I'm curious to hear if he had an injury... but man, great Olympics by Farah!

Party like a rock-star... sort of... web page Belgian track cyclist Gijs Van Hoecke won't be around for the closing ceremonies at the London Olympics. Van Hoecke was removed from the Games by the Belgian Olympic Committee after images of him appearing drunk were published by The Daily Mail. The photos show the 20-year-old being carried into a taxi outside a London nightclub. Van Hoeck has his eyes closed and his clothes are soaked. The Belgian Olympic Committee called the incident "deplorable." Van Hoecke expressed regret for the actions and where he chose to celebrate his experience at the Olympics. "What happened is a pity. I am sorry, this should not have happened," Van Hoecke told RTBF television. "But I also think that after two years of relentless work, I have the right to let my hair down. It would have been better if it had not happened here in London. "I chose the wrong moment. Having said that, it was outside the Olympic Village, I wasn't disturbing other athletes, they didn't say anything about it." The night on the town came after Van Hoecke competed in the omnium and team sprint competitions. He finished 15th in the omnium, and Belgium was ninth in the team sprint. Imagine if he won gold...
