This is an updated version of an earlier story about the uncertain and stressful period the franchise is going through at this time.

Interesting information suggesting Heckert and Banner DID NOT PART ON GOOD TERMS when Heckert left Eagles to come to the Browns.

Also, Reid had say over the 53 man roster in Philly, not Banner. The article speculates that Banner was involved in a power struggle with Andy Reid and left the Eagles as a result of the power struggle.

Some interesting stuff...

Cleveland Browns GM Tom Heckert acknowledges uncertain futures, stresses focus on winning

Wednesday, August 01, 2012, 12:06 AM

BEREA, Ohio -- Browns General Manager Tom Heckert admitted Tuesday that the current regime has no idea what its future holds in light of the impending sale of the team to Tennessee businessman Jimmy Haslam III.

"Until we sit down with the new owner, no one's really sure what's going to happen," said Heckert. "I've told the guys on my staff and some of the players to just keep doing what they're doing. From a football standpoint, there's not a whole that can be changed at this point, so it's got to be business as usual."

Heckert said news of the impending sale comes as optimism for the season is running high. The Browns are thrilled with first-round picks Brandon Weeden and running back Trent Richardson, and think the product on the field will be good despite what national prognosticators are saying.

"We can't worry about what's going on with the sale or what's going to happen after the season," he said. "We're excited about this season and we just have to focus on playing good football."

Heckert said he also doesn't know if his old boss, former Eagles President Joe Banner, is part of the Haslam group, as has been reported by The Plain Dealer and other outlets. He declined further comment on the sale and its ramifications until it's finalized.

But if Banner takes over, what does that mean for team president Mike Holmgren and former Eagles staffers Heckert, coach Pat Shurmur and offensive coordinator Brad Childress? Holmgren is in the third year of a five-year deal that pays him about $8 million a year.

"I think it's safe to assume that when a new owner or president comes in, they want to bring in their own people," said a league source. "Whether or not they keep any of those guys around remains to be seen. But most of the changes wouldn't take place until after the season."

If Banner wants the title of President, Holmgren will either be gone -- or possibly re-assigned. One source said, "Joe Banner is an astute businessman and he doesn't like to waste money. If Mike has a guaranteed contract and wants to stay, they might decide to keep him around."

Another league insider said, "the new owner would probably be blown away by Mike once they finally meet. Who knows what he might decide?"

Current owner Randy Lerner, who will retain 30 percent of the team (a source confirmed WKYC's report for The Plain Dealer) and have a seat on the board, will undoubtedly highly recommend Haslam keep Holmgren.

But where do the former Eagles -- Heckert, Shurmur and Childress -- stand with Banner? Although some in the Philadelphia media have speculated Banner and Heckert didn't part on good terms when Heckert took over here in January of 2010, a source said that wasn't the case. Heckert, the source said, had a good working relationship with Banner, but left to have final say over the 53-man roster. In Philadelphia, coach Andy Reid had that authority.

Banner also had a good relationship with Shurmur, who was quarterbacks coach for most of his 10 seasons in Philadelphia, and Childress, who spent the last four of his seven seasons there as offensive coordinator. Does that mean Banner would keep them around? Most likely it depends on how well they do this season.

Without question, the Eagles enjoyed tremendous success when Heckert, Shurmur and Childress worked under Banner. In Childress' tenure (1999-2005), the club went 70-42, captured four straight NFC East titles, made the playoffs five straight seasons and played in Super Bowl XXXIX.

One insider said Banner would most likely let the 2012 season play out and then make individual decisions on the coaching staff and personnel department.

Some in the Philadelphia media speculated that Banner's departure was the result of a power struggle with Reid, who's still close to Heckert, Shurmur and Childress. But Banner and Reid insisted that wasn't the case. Banner, who's still a strategic advisor to Eagles owner Jeff Lurie, said during his exit press conference that he was stepping down to be "involved with the world of buying and selling a sports team with the possibility of becoming part of a group that buys a team."

Reid said then of the reported rift, "There's no truth to that. We've had a great working relationship."

What if some of the up-and-comers on the Browns staff receive other opportunities? Wouldn't it be hard to keep them here when there's no guarantee of a job in January?

"The Browns can say this is not a distraction, and maybe it's not so much for the players, but there are a lot of people whose jobs are up in the air now," said a source.

I think there is at least a shot at Holmgren staying in charge of football and Banner taking charge of all the marketing and business side of things. Holmgren is a football guy and I dont think the other stuff interests him at all. Banner isn't a draft guru nor a guy that is sitting up late at nights studying film, he is the guy that is gonna be out selling naming rights and finding ways to milk every penny he can.

I hope they can all find a way to make this thing work because I do believe this team is ready to take off in the very near future and if Weeden can sling it like I saw in those highlight clips, it could be really soon.

Well Peen, you either are making money or you aren't making money. Doubling your money in 13 years is making a lot of money.

I understand that your explanation is the way standard business in this nation is done. It's the owner/owners/
stockholders that reap the rewards by conducting it exactly as you have explained.

But at the end of the day, it doesn't change the fact that owners are doubling their money while trying to play the pity card as to not making money.

As I understand it, assets are a part of your cummulative wealth. If the worth of any one asset doubles in 13 years you have made money on that asset.

So I wasn't so much saying the players should have gotten more money, but I do feel this bait and switch con game they try to display to the public about them not making money is nothing but BS.

I feel we both know that both the players union and the owners try to garner support from the public and it seems that in how this has went down, the owners were being far less than honest about their overall financial gains in regards to their franchises. So yeah, if it's broken down into sub-categories they can twist or omit just about anything.

ie.... Well, I'll tell them how I'm not making it over here while I don't tell them it's a cash cow over here.

I'm quite sure if the public at large knew that in fact the owners were doubling their money on a franchise in terms of worth, many wouldn't see things quite the way the owners portray it to be.

And I do believe that both the labor agreement and the new record setting TV contract played a big role in the overall value of the franchise.

Once again I'll talk about perspective.....

If you are inside of an organozation struggling for power, that's far from being the one in charge abd in power of an organization.

When one owns a franchise and wants to win, it's his option as to what powers those under him have. If you remove the power struggle, you remove the motivation for the strife.

Bottom line? If Heckerts players produce and the new owner wants to win, it's a match. Funny how investing a billion dollars will change your perspective. You want the best personnel man and talent evaluator you can find. If he feels that's Heckert, then this is simply wanting to make a story from the past somehow seem relivant to the present.

Dude wants to make money. If he feels Heckert is the right guy to bring in the talent, the money involved will dictate Heckert stays.

Follow the money and you will find your answers. The power struggle is over.....

It also said this.

So it appears there wasn't a rift between Banner and Heckert at all. That the battle was between Reid and Heckert over the final 53 man roster.

Lerner should have plenty of money now to buy the Indians.

If Lerner bought the Indians and hired Sandy to manage and brought in one or two big free agents I think we would see Jacobs field crowds again.

If you think about it ... that explanation makes more since.

I could never understand why a FO person other then the GM would want roster control.

Not really. It's an annualized return of just under 5.5%.

If you're involved in private equity, which is how I'd classify this investment, the average ROI is well well north of that.

I don't know his annual returns on the franchise but let's say they're around flat...judging by the number of coaches he's been paying not to coach here that's probably fair.

But overall he didn't make a killing on this purchase. Them's just the facts.

I think it's obvious Holmgren is gone. Probably not a big deal.

But I'm amazed that people actually believe Heckert will still be here after this year.

We have finally built a roster that has a chance to grow into a really good team.

And it will all be blown up.

Makes me sick to my stomach.

Lerner is a douche bag.

Holmgren is the president of the Browns. Joe Banner's previous job in the NFL was as president of the Eagles. Banner is coming to the Browns. There isn't room for two presidents.

I understand the title conflict, but I feel like their job expertise and functions would be in 2 different areas. I wonder if there is just a title change that could take place? Possibly naming banner as CEO?

Not sure how that may work.

Yeah, I think MH is gone as well. Too many chiefs near the top. Not enough room for all of them.

Heckert? Nobody really knows one way or the other. I don't see any type of clear cut evidence that he will be gone or will stay. They have worked together before, same system, Heckert is extremly good at his job and I have seen no confirmation that there were any problems between the two when they did work together.

The guy has never owned a team so it's not like he has "his people", unless of course you think Andy Reid and his coaching staff plan to give up their gig in Philly to come here?

So I do believe it could go either way. I'm just as surprised we have so many "doom and gloomers" on here speculating the other way. So call us both amazed!

With them both working in the same system together with a very successful franchise in both of their rear view mirrors, it would seem just as logical that the new owner would keep Heckert as anything. Not saying he will.

But what do you bring to the table as any evidence he has someone out there he feels would be a better talent evaluator than Heckert to run our drafts? And considering Heckert and the current team that is being built, is for almost an identical system to the one in Philly, (other than the mobile QB aspect), what do you bring to the table to show just cause for this roster being blown up?

Face it, if we don't see our HC mature a great degree this season, we have a former HC at OC who also has experience with this guy in Childress. I wouldn't be surprised to see that type of change occur if Shurmer flounders. But with Childress coaching the offense this year, it wouldn't be "blowing up" anything.

If this guy wants to "turn a franchise around" as he has indicated, you don't throw the baby out with the bath water and undergo a complete rebuild if you already have some of the ingrediants here to accomplish that IMO

They ran the 4-3 in Philly. We run the 4-3. So no D complete overhaul needed. The offenses are eerily similar and we have more talent now. So no complete overhaul needed there.

So exactly what is your basis for all the doom and gloom?

And whar has Lerner accomplished exactly to make you feel as though new ownership may not be just the spark this team needs? You know, once you give up on someone (Lerner), getting people to respond to your leadership can be a difficult task. I'm not saying it's so, but this team has a history of utter failure under Lerners ownership. If the veterans here feel that way, a new owner may be a big part of the spark this team needs.

Unless of course you've already weighed all of the facts and rendered the new owner a complete moron, I don't see how you would find it likely that not only does he buy a franchise, but some of the people that he has had proven success with in the past are already here. Then turn around, kick them ALL to the curb just for the sake of being a complete moron.

I'm not saying these assertions are correct. But what I can say is they have as much or more merrit than your doom and gloom scenario......

Well, I'm pretty sure that Haslam will go to league meetings to represent the Browns, whereas Lerner had Holmgren do that in his place. Further, there could be a Owner, CEO, President, GM, Head Coach type of structure put into place so that they can keep Holmgren. Now he may not want to stay with reduced duties, but who knows?

If we are wondering when Holmgren and Haslam are going to meet...too late...they already have.

Haslam says Banner was an “unofficial” consultant

Posted by Mike Florio on August 3, 2012, 4:00 AM EDT

As Jimmy Haslam finalizes a deal to buy the Browns, only a week after news of the deal between Haslam and Randy Lerner first broke, Haslam acknowledges that former Eagles president Joe Banner has had a role in the transaction.

“We did consult with several people on an unofficial basis, and one of them was [Banner],” Haslam tells Adam Schefter of ESPN. “But we’re not going to comment on any potential hires at this time.”

There’s at least one good reason for discretion: The league has yet to approve the sale. Given, however, that Haslam already has been approved to own a double-digit piece of the Steelers and that (as we reported last week) the Lerner-Haslam deal was brokered at the league-office level, it would be a shock if at least 24 of the other owners don’t vote in favor of Haslam taking over the Browns.

Per Schefter, Haslam had dinner on Thursday night with team president Mike Holmgren. On Friday, Haslam will meet coach Pat Shurmur and G.M. Tom Heckert.

“This is a critical time of year for the team and we don’t want to be a distraction,” Haslam said. ”The story after today needs to be about the Browns, not about the change in ownership.”

If, however, Holmgren’s contract contains a clause that allows him to leave with full pay after a change in ownership, Holmgren could decide that he wants out. Or he could revise his deal to give himself the ability to pull the rip cord and cash out whenever he wants, like Bill Parcells did during his 30-day escape hatch after Stephen Ross bought the Dolphins from Wayne Huizenga.

Either way, change is coming to Cleveland — unless Haslam plans to be an absentee landlord, like Randy Lerner was.

Which was surprising to see only because NFL Network was reporting last night that they'd be sitting down today. Maybe they still are, who knows? Maybe it got moved up so that Haslam could be back in Tennessee for the weekend?

Speeding up the sale......

Question : when a team changes hands in the NFL....dosent the other teams get a % of that, a small % but none the less dont they get something...I thought I heard they do....but I also thought I heard Faith Hill knocking on my picture window at home.....so maybe I'm wrong....But if they do than no wonder a team can change hands in less than 2 months. Let me ask you this. What you would you do if you just dropped a billion dollars on something that required employees to run it? I know what I would do. I would put people that I am comfortable with and that I believe are competent in place. That's a logical expectation and quite honestly an expected one. And you don't even need to answer the question. You would do the exact same. All of us would. It's damn near common sense. You don't drop a billion dollars and ride with people you don't know.

So there are a couple of real questions. How competent are the new owners? Will they be able to put competent people in place? I'll admit everything I've read seems positive on this front. You don't build the business they've built without some level of competence. The other question is how well do they know Heckert? How comfortable with him are they? Do THEY believe he can do the job?

Truth is they probably have people in mind already for all the positions. I know I would if I were about to drop a billion bucks. And for those that believe they will keep Holmgren AND Banner I just don't see where that makes any sense at all. These guys are successful businessmen. I can't imagine they keep Holmgren at $8m/year when Banner can do the same thing.

Holmgren is gone. I'm not that tore up about it. Shurmur may get a stay of execution as well as Heckert if the record is there. But my biggest fear is the record is 4-12 and they completely blow it up all the while the product on the field is actually pretty decent and is just a young team growing up but you can see are ready to take the next step.

Heckert is the best thing to happen to this franchise in 20 years. But they will look for a reason to get there guy in there. I would. The difference is I trust me.

And when you start replacing the Pres, GM, and coach ... make no mistake...that's a rebuild. Something I don't really have the stomach for anymore.

Statement by Steelers President Art Rooney II on Jimmy Haslam

Posted 5 hours ago

Jimmy Haslam and his family have been great partners in the Steelers Ownership for the past three years. I am sorry that he will be leaving our Ownership group, but I am happy the National Football League is going to have a strong new Owner. I am sure the Haslam Family will bring constructive and able ownership to the Cleveland Browns.

Here's my take on the presser. Haslam is one of those guys who knows exactly what he wants and will steer you there willing or otherwise. They also accept being proven wrong and will give you a chance but it's a pass/fail kind of thing. You have to prove everything to a guy like that. And guys like that are more than willing to call you on the carpet for anything and everything.

What does the future hold? Who knows? I do see in him that failure is not an option.

well, got nothing against Randy Lerner, but this guy,, he's an Owner. He is without a doubt Failure is not an option kinda guy.. No question

Two things jumped out.. Winning for him is all that matters.. he'll do whatever it is he can from his chair to make sure that happens.

The other thing is, He seems to feel that Mike holmgren (who he had GLOWING remarks about) has the team and orgainzation going in the right direction.

That could be smoke,, but something tells me it isn't. He doesn't' strike me as a smoke up your skirt kinda guy.

we'll see I guess.

But as of this moment, I'm a bit on the pumped up side..

J/C,

I like that he mentioned "building threw the Draft" a couple of times ... I think he gets that and I also think that he gets that their are people here more competent to do that.

When was the last time you saw a game where the owner sat in the stands with average folks?

I have a feeling that Jimmy will be in touch with this fan base and I really feel like we have a bright and stable future going forward.

Welcome to Cleveland Jimmy

Will Browns sale impact use of rookiess Brandon Weeden, Trent Richardson and Josh Gordon?

BEREA, Ohio – Running back Trent Richardson got a migraine just as the sale of the Cleveland Browns was being completed.

Talk about ominous signs.

In the span of a week, all the momentum the Browns had developed this offseason with an offensive reshuffling featuring Richardson, quarterback Brandon Weeden and wide receiver Josh Gordon came to a screeching halt with an even bigger makeover.

Absentee owner Randy Lerner agreed Thursday to sell the franchise to Jim Haslam III for more than $1 billion. That purchase included approximately $700 million paid now and the rest due at a later date, according to a league source.

While the sale may ultimately be beneficial for the Browns, who have yet to play in a Super Bowl despite being one of the league's most storied franchises, the short-term considerations may cause anxiety for some.

Specifically, what does that mean for this offseason's big three and the men in charge of the trio, starting with coach Pat Shurmur? Did this season suddenly become about winning at all costs? Or can Shurmur take a step back and focus on the development of what is, presumably, the nucleus of the team's future?

"I have no fear," Shurmur said regarding his future following practice Thursday.

One persistent rumor, which a league source confirmed having heard Wednesday, is that former Philadelphia Eagles president and current advisor Joe Banner would help oversee the football operations for Haslam. Banner's presence could have an impact not only on Shurmur, general manager Tom Heckert (who worked with Banner in Philadelphia), Browns executive vice president Bryan Wiedmeier and president Mike Holmgren.

While the circumstances could understandably impact decision-making by the current front office and head coach, Weeden won't allow himself to be distracted.

"I don't even think about it because what we're doing here is hard enough," said Weeden, who is 28 and played five years of professional baseball before returning to football. "We don't need that added pressure. Stuff goes on inside these buildings that is beyond our control that we have to ignore. We have so much on our plate. … I have so much on my plate, the last thing I have to pay attention to is stuff that's outside my control."

[Related: Ben Roethlisberger's rotator cuff is torn, but just a little bit]
Weeden wasn't trying to be indifferent to the plight of those above him, just realistic about his role.

"It's hard to listen to," he said. "I have been in professional sports before, so I understand the business side of it. I understand ownership, I know how it all works. I'm not naïve enough to not realize what is going on. But at the same time, there are a lot more important people up there making decisions.

They're making decisions about me about whether I can play, but I can only worry about playing football."

Conversely, linebacker Scott Fujita, who is likely playing in his final season, talked about the amped sense of "urgency" on everyone.

"The urgency was already there for this team because we hadn't won a lot of games the past few years, now it's even moreso," said Fujita, 33, who wondered aloud if he and his $3.5 million salary this season would become a target for possible cost-cutting. "That sense of urgency just goes up with a new owner.

"What's the mindset in terms of how we use certain guys? Do the coaches feel we have to win a certain number of games or do this or that? You wonder how it's going to play out in people's heads."

In the case of Richardson, for instance, does that mean Shurmur might use him too much in an effort to save his job? That's hardly unheard of. In 2003, for instance, then-Dolphins head coach Dave Wannstedt ran Ricky Williams 392 times, including 20 times in a meaningless season finale just because Wannstedt apparently wanted to finish 10-6 to preserve his job.

Richardson wasn't available to discuss the subject because of the migraine, but the situation is obvious. Or as Fujita put it, "The coaches become lab rats just like the players."

The fortunate part for Weeden and the Browns is that he's had experience in steering clear of the owner.

"When I was still in Tampa when I was 18, the Yankees had lost eight or nine straight," the former baseball prospect said. "We were coming back from Lakeland and had just won, but the trainer came up to us and said The Boss [George Steinbrenner] was in there working out. The trainer said, 'Look, just get your things and go. Don't shower, just go. Get your stuff and go home and shower.' The Boss was in there and he was mad."

Now, before he even takes his first snap as a pro, Weeden is going from one boss to the next. What that means for the Browns today and tomorrow is a gigantic mystery.

Enough to give someone a headache just thinking about it.

That could be smoke,, but something tells me it isn't. He doesn't' strike me as a smoke up your skirt kinda guy.

It's hard to imagine a guy who made his fortune owning truck stops is anything but straightforward and honest in what he says.

Hard to imagine Damanshot wearing a skirt.

I can definitely see that.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Just kidding.

But, IF you're a hard core uniform guy you had better hold on to your hat! He basically said they market hard and have changed corporate logos three times!
Sounded as if colors remain but a uni reboot WILL happen!

Just win Jimmy...just win.

Actually, what he said was that this was a marketing driven league and he wouldn't rule anything out. But that winning is where he's pointed.

I see new unis, same color, but new style. I don't see a logo on the helmet. I see CBS renamed Pilot or Flying J stadium (unless stadium naming rights were one of the four things that Randy Lerner specifically damanded that weren't revealed outside of the team will NOT be moved)

Randy Lerner talked in circles when he talked at all. This guy is straight up. you don't get the feeling of any fooling around here.

I would imagine people that work for him know what he expects from them very clearly.

Talk about creating and/or feeding fear of a new owner.

- TR got a migraine because the sale of the team
- The BW, TR & JG makeover has come to a screeching halt....really, how?
- And again, the rumor of Banner taking over the MH

No proof, all rumor and some guesswork.

I highly doubt we see the stadium named "Flying J", or Pilot, or anything he has anything to do with.

Stop and think about it: Naming rights are nothing but a way for a team to pocket some cash. Why would he transfer money from one of his pockets (flying j), to one of his other pockets (the browns).

Advertising? He's a smart man, right? When is the last time you changed your alliance to a place that had a name on a stadium?

I never have. Some do, I would guess.

When my cousin drove the Pennzoil car in Indy racing - I didn't buy their oil.

When he drove the Marlboro car, I didn't run out and buy cigs.

When he drove the Mobil 1 car in nascar, I didn't buy Mobil 1 fuel or oil.

When my favorite driver was Bobby Labonte, I didn't go buy Interstate Batteries.

Not too long after Nationwide became the sponsor of the "second tier" of nascar, I dropped nationwide as my insurance company because their rates increased.

That's all nascar stuff, I know.

But, I won't be seeking out a flying J or a pilot either.

I dont' bank with any place because they have their name on a stadium. etc etc etc.

IF the stadium gets named, or the field, or whatever, my guess is he'll sell the "rights" to some company he has nothing to do with - as it puts NEW money in his pocket.

Good points Arch, but there is another side to that debate.

In Jimmy Haslam's interview he made mention that the Browns where his second biggest investment (Pilot Flying J being the #1) now, so in retrospect it might be free advertizing for his # 1 interest or business.

I think that having a good owner goes hand in hand with their success in other businesses.

In short ... If both franchises are strengthened by the stock of the other, how can that be a bad thing.

We all know to well what happens when a poor business man runs a NFL franchise.

I was looking at the photos of camp with Haslam visiting. I was thinking Mike looked comfortable and having a good time and I also thought Shurmur looked like a dear in headlights. then Shurmur say "I have no fear," Shurmur said regarding his future following practice Thursday." I dont know looking at the pictures I see a lot of fear.
