Coach Pat Shurmur made the announcement here today following practice. Weeden, the Browns second selection in the first round of April's draft, will make his first start on Friday when the Browns visit the Detroit Lions for their first preseason game.
I'm glad they made it official now rather than dragging it out into the pre-season. It's pretty clear Weeden brings more to the table than Seneca or Colt so why delay getting him up to speed, make him starter now and get him some ever crucial snaps in the pre-season, and hopefully come Week 1, he's ready.
Colt didn't even think it was a competition based off of his continued snaps with the second team offense. It's obvious he didn't do much to elevate his play to be with the first team.

What's obvious is that it was never really a competition.
Weeden has some pressure to perform in my opinion. Many people have touted him to be a good quarterback without ever seeing him beyond some highlights.
It is my opinion that he will struggle mightly this season, partially because he's a rookie and partially because he's not very good under pressure.

Unfortunately, it's the truth. Not to discount Colt, or Weeden, but when you draft a QB in the 1st round, you draft him to be the starter and the team made no effort to mask that it was their intention from the point they drafted Weeden to name him the starter so... as of today, mission accomplished. I think going out and getting a QB was the right move.
Yeah, but you don't always draft them to start from Day one. (think Palmer in Cincy)
In this case however, two things were clear, Weeden is 28, there really isn't any time to waste and McCoy didn't excite. There you have it. I wonder if weeden were say 24 or 25, would they have given him a little more time to season before naming him.
Either that, or he just blew McCoy away in camp so far. and that's not close to the reports that were coming out by reporters. anyway, it's a done deal..
I'm gonna be rooting for him every sunday..., I want a winner and if he brings one, I'm good to go.

I actually watched a lot of Okie St this year. When the talking heads criticize Weeden for not being good under pressure the way they say it is that they haven't seen enough of hi under pressure. They note that opposing defensive coaches have said the way to defend Weeden is to get pressure on him.
Yet despite all their efforts they rarely do. That is because he is a quick decision maker who gets the ball out of his hand quickly. And no Qb including Brady, Manning, Rodgers and Brees is very good when he is getting ht as he is throwng the ball. Now, it may take him a little bit to get used to reading defenses. the competition took place in mini camps and OTA's. Colt was out played and they were rotating and splitting reps pretty evenly. By the time they took their first snaps in camp, the competition was over and Weeden was taking the majority of reps.
The only thing that will happen now is that Weeden is going to hog reps in Peyton Manning fashion. I would say from here on out Weeden will take at least 95%.

It's certainly possible, after Pat Shurmur named rookie Brandon Weeden the Brown's starting quarterback on Monday.
It was an expected move for a Browns team looking to go in a new direction, but McCoy is clearly disappointed how the process was handled.
"I haven't taken any snaps with the first group," McCoy said, via The Plain Dealer. "I thought coming in it would be a competition."
McCoy wouldn't say if he wants a trade, or if the team has approached him about a deal. In the meantime, he'll "continue to approach the job as if I'm the starter."
Weeden steps in after McCoy went 6-15 in parts of two seasons as starter. Weeden said there's no animosity between the two quarterbacks.
"He's a great guy," Weeden said.
McCoy's frustration is understandable as a competitor, but it's not like he didn't get a fair crack at the gig. McCoy didn't have a ton of talent around him, but he also didn't show the ability to make chicken salad out of chicken-you-know-what.
Now Weeden gets his shot. Or at least until new ownership rolls in and blows up the Browns once again.

Absolutely. You don't draft a 28 year old QB in the 1st round and expect him to sit on the bench when you've been one of the worst teams over the past decade. We've seen more and more young/rookie QBs succeed in their 1st year and there's no reason not to throw Weeden into the fire. There's no sense in waiting until he's 30 to see what he's got when all he has to do is beat out what is essentially the worst starting QB in the league last year (McCoy).

It’s good to have teammates that you can count on during this process. I think that everyone has been great in helping me as a rookie to adjust. Quarterback wise, Seneca (Wallace) has been great, and really been helpful. With D’Qwell (Jackson) being the middle linebacker, I’ll ask him a lot of questions. He sees my eyes and sees what I’m doing pre-snap. He helps me if he thinks I’m tipping something to the defense or he’ll help me adjust something to make my process a little bit smoother where I’m hiding things better. Those are two guys that have been in the league for awhile that are veteran guys that I can rely on, and they’ve been extremely helpful.
