I will say that what adam posted compared to what was posted from the pd sends two vastly different messages.

I would love for one of these guys to say "Yeah he's the starter, he's gotta go take all the hits, and take all the criticism....i'm just gonna be content standing with a clipboard and collecting a paycheck. I don't need to work too hard, cause if i have to go in its ok to suck, cause i'm the backup, and i don't get alot of reps. I am the number 2 for a reason"

After reading the entire transcript of McCoy's statements ... the ONLY thing I had a problem with was the "I did?" part. Almost like he's being smug and whiny.

In all seriousness, I like Colt McCoy. I wanted him to be the answer and thought he had a chance (albeit a small chance). But last year it was evident that he couldn't make all of the throws and his performance steadily declined after opponents knew his weaknesses. So when he says he didn't get a fair shot, I beg to differ ... last year WAS his shot. While we didn't have the same weapons, he still could have proven more. Much more.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

Yes that was a little smug, but the question was more leading then it should have been too.

If we do trade or release him I hope that it's a football decision in the best interest of this team and not because the Media got their story.

Agreed. If I had my way we would keep McCoy as the backup, because he still can have some nice value for our team.

Open competition or not, in training camp, from what I saw, there is such a noticeable difference between Colt and Weeden. Weeden's ball has zip, and gets to where it needs to be in stride. Colt's ball tends to float and is constantly a step too slow to it's target.

I know people like Colt the person, but he clearly doesn't have the arm to be a starter. Maybe some day, he'll have such an understanding of the NFL that he'll be able to know when and where to put the ball quickly. But right now he doesn't.

Weeden's arm alone can make up for the mistakes in reads that he does make. I'm excited by the fact that we have a QB to threaten a defense throughout the entire game.

I look at a guy like Vick. And at any moment, it almost seems like all he does is flick his wrist and the ball travels 50 yards, perfectly leading the receiver for a TD...

Then you have Colt, who seemingly has to put all his body weight into a throw, that looks like a wounded duck, as the WR has to stop and wait for it...

I got ripped last year when I said that a QB like McCoy who doesn't have an elite arm had better have elite accuracy and anticipation, and that he was lacking in all 3 areas.

Whenever the national media visits, they make comments wondering what people are talking about when they say that McCoy has improved. ESPN's Hensley said :

http://espn.go.com/blog/afcnorth/post/_/id/51825/camp-confidential-cleveland-browns-2

Quote:

There's been talk that Colt McCoy has improved since last season, but it didn't show during my visit. His throws lacked any zip, especially when following Weeden's passes, and were continually behind receivers.

Or John Clayton ......

http://espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp12/st...-training-camps

Quote:

Unfortunately, ownership changes lead to coaching changes, so Shurmur is on the hot seat in his second season. Weeden isn't, though. He's bigger and stronger than Colt McCoy, so it will be only a matter of a week or two before he wins the starting job.

The locla media has been incredibly complimentary about McCoy ..... but the national writers visiting practice have been less enthusiastic about McCoy.

Great kid ..... solid leadership ...... willing to sacrifice ....... but unfortunately, just lacking in important attributes necessary to be a successful NFL QB.

Cue the chorus calling me a hater .......

I am a bit surprised, but pleasantly so. We are going forward with Weeden, and that makes sense to me.

I would like to see him play the half, plus a series into the third quarter.

Game action, and reps are important.

I wouldnt call you a hater unless you only posted negitive thnigs about colt McCoy from any source you can find and never talk about anything positive that is written about him. If you didnt say he should be gone and post things like Wallace is now helping the Rookie when he said last year its not his job and agreed.

Ok your not a hater.

You don't get it, it's not honest answers, he's supposed to admit that he sucks and be thankful that Browns fans even know his name... then he is supposed to be ecstatic that he got replaced as the starter... Our fans love honesty and emotion, right up to the point where they actually GET real honesty and emotion, then they wonder why the guy wasn't PC.

I saw a video on nfl.com and Charlie Cassely (?) Says Colt will have to be traded or released, because many fans in Cleveland still like McCoy.
What we are supposed to hate him, because we spent the 85th selection on him and he didn't turn out to be our savior. Dumb! Immature but heads.

LMAO. Now we know why he is no longer a GM. The Fans should never make command decisions. What a dope.

Colt has done nothing to indicate that he will be a problem, yet every question that he has been asked have all tried to play on his emotions (and your right he is not supposed to have feelings or emotions).

Careful what you wish for folks ... You might just get your wish.

I like McCoy, I will always like McCoy..he's a great kid and a class act.... If Weeden comes out and plays better, then he should start and our second best option should be the back-up. I would venture to say that 99.9% of Browns fans feel that way... The only way any significant number of fans are going to start calling for McCoy is if Weeden blows... and if Weeden can't seperate himself from McCoy, then we have bigger problems.

Ok in looking at the 2 choices as backup....

Seneca has more experience, better wheels...
Colt is younger, less expensive, I think a better leader........I also think a better attitude but lets negate that one as it is really speculative and subjective...much more so than the others...

We get about the same production out of each...for the most part....

When it comes down to it...By keeping Colt...we have a backup to Weedon for his entire career or at least most of it. Can we say the same for Wallace??? How many years does Wallace have left?(really??? I am asking...I don't know)

I don't see Colt as a problem. I don't see it as a problem with the fans...Even the Colt Supporters can see that Brandon has a better Arm, etc....and it will be evident...And I don't see Colt making waves....He is too much of a professional. Is he dissappointed...absolutely....But he IS a professional and he will put ego aside for the team. Frankly, I think he should call up Ty Detmer..a guy who looked to be destined to be a good starter in the League but became a well respected Backup. Heck even Gannon was a Journeyman Backup forever before he broke out for a few years...(not saying it will happen for Colt..but who knows what the future holds)

I just see more positives keeping Colt over Seneca than I do the opposite... JMHO

That about sums it up perfectly.

This isn't a case like past years where we are debating between two QB's. There is no doubt, at this point anyway, as to who the better option is... the ONLY way Colt gets called for by any fan is if Weeden completely implodes.

The coaches just really need to sit down and say hey.. you are going to be our backup.. are you committed to being that? or are you going to cause problems?

Seneca is okay with being the backup, and thats the advantage there.

I'm quite sure that they've had conversations with him, and I'm also quite sure that he realizes that as the backup he'll be one play away from being the starter.
And, I doubt that Seneca is okay with being the backup. He may be more at peace with it because his entire career has been in that role, but I doubt that he's really "Okay" with it.... hence comments like the ones he made about mentoring McCoy.

He's okay with it though. With McCoy, I guess he honestly thought he was better than him, so he wanted the starting role.

With Weeden though, he knows. Wallace is a realist, and understands that this is a business.

It's like the Coach said. Colt and the rest of the QB's have been professionals.

Imo Colt is a better QB then Wallace and in my mind that's what matters.

If Mary kay doesn't prod Colt looking for problems, then there will be none.

Was Seneca okay with being Colts backup last season? No he was not.

Weeden is our best option, that should be obvious even to our backups.

It started during the draft when he is crying to adam sheffler that the Browns told him they were not going to take a QB. Then when he is getting out played by the rookie in Mini camp and OTA's while splitting reps evenly, he says he doesnt know if he is going to get a fair shot to start. Now he says he has taken NO reps with the first team (which is untrue by everything I have read) and he didnt get a fair shot to start.

It will continue to get worse. It is just a big old negative distraction and with all these youngsters on offense, you want to avoid any and all distractions. Best way to do that is ship the complaint department.

I doubt it's resentment, Wallace wanted to be the starter last year, I assume he has given up on that and decided that a back-up pay check is better than being cut so he has changed his heart... just as Colt wanted to be the starter but will now work hard as the back-up and hope to get his shot...

Well, here's what we know:

Wallace knows he's a backup and wants to save his cushy, fat salary. If he's cut, there's no way in Hell he gets what he's getting if he stays in Cleveland. That makes him a little friendlier to the incumbent starter.

McCoy? Has always wanted the starters gig. To that end, he's less likely to be interested in helping Weeden take his job. I understand McCoy's position.

As for McCoy himself, just a few random thoughts...

1) McCoy has never faced any adversity in his life until he got to the NFL. He was the golden child who could do no wrong and had the world handed to him. This isn't to say he was a dope like Vince Young. In fact, McCoy is known as a really good egg. However, there have been times when McCoy has issued small statements or body-language cues which indicate he's not dealing with this as well as we might otherwise wish for. His comments about his belief that there'd be a competition is subtle whining and nothing more. Any idiot who can put a straw into a cup knew his days as the starter were over, therefore such a comment from him was a poor decision.

2) All the talking heads would normally be right about someone in McCoy's position needing to be sent packing from the organization. However, in a strange twist, this is a rare case where nobody is really carrying the banner for McCoy. The select 2% notwithstanding, the vast majority realize there is only so much upside with McCoy. He's a backup-grade QB who failed in his opportunity to excel as a starter. In spite of his few remarks and questionable body language cues, McCoy isn't the kind to rock the boat. I believe it also helps that Weeden, in terms of being an NFL QB, has everything McCoy doesn't. He's big, he's got the strong arm, he's mature, and in terms of pure perception, he looks the part. So for once, McCoy remaining on the roster as the backup isn't going to cause any more of a ruckus than if Wallace were back there. The bottom line is that no matter who the backup is, if Weeden goes out there and stinks up the joint, the fans will be calling for whomever is back there, regardless if his name is McCoy, Wallace, or Phineas Winklesnort. Personally, I'd rather have a guy back there who is cheap, has, perhaps, a little upside, and is mobile, which is a healthy attribute to have as a backup QB, so I believe the talking-heads are wrong in this case about McCoy remaining on the roster.

3) If I were McCoy, I wouldn't wanna go anywhere. No team is going to offer me the starters gig. At least here in Cleveland I would know the entire offensive playbook, I have familiarity with all the receivers and coaches, and like any place in the league, I'm one play away from getting back in the game. I'm going to back up a 29-year old rookie who is trying to do something that has never been done before. Here in Cleveland, I'd like my chances. So if I'm one play away, where would be the best place for me to be? Where I'm the most familiar is the answer. To that end, McCoy would be best served to STFU and just say one thing: "I'm going to work very hard and make sure I'm ready should the opportunity present itself." The end. Anything else serves no purpose other than to feed the media trolls.

I'm not a blind believer in Weeden, though I acknowledge his tools. As much as I never believed in McCoy, I value him as a backup and would rather he stay put.

I think your argument blows up right there. Colt may have more years left, but not here in Cleveland.

I will bet you a box of donuts Wallace will finish up his career here if he stays as the #2, and Colt bolts as soon as he can if he is left as the #2 man.

Your first point also leads to think Wallace. In a interview with Shurmer, he was talking about traits of a #2 and he said good feet and being able to make things happen with the feet are desired.

well, Wallace's career might only have the 2 years left on Colt's contract anyway.

I think we draft a mid-round guy to be our QB3 for next year and whoever is our QB2 (Colt or Seneca) in 2013 is gone for 2014.

Maybe, but my feeling is Wallace has 5 year left as a back-up. What is he?? 34??

There have been a bunch of 40 year old back-ups.

I can see a team deciding on a player in that situation because it can tear a locker room apart. It can become a distraction for the team as well. Teams generally try to avoid distractions whenever they can ...... and I suspect that they will in this case as well.

Besides, I bet they like Wallace as the backup anyway. Weeds has already said how much Wallace has been helping him out this off-season.

There are no distractions other then what turds of fans and Media alike would lead you to believe.

They sell papers ((shrug))

Shurmur has state on numerous occasions, that all of the QB's have been professional.

If the Media wouldn't have prodded the kid ... we would have no remarks what so ever. Whats he supposed to take the 5th? tell us lies? have no emotions?

Just keep it real Mourg. Huh!

I was at camp yesterday but arrived late like Saintdawg and was not as close to the action as I wanted to be.

But I'll say this about the QBs.

It's obvious Weeden is the best. Throws a really beautiful ball with a lot of touch. He knows when to apply velocity and when to finesse it. As just a thrower of a football he is impressive.

McCoy was easily the second best QB. Much improved velocity. He is also clearly a backup.

Wallace was mostly garbage.

I don't like Colt's attitude and his comment yesterday is leading him to become a distraction. But I'm afraid he would be our best option at #2.

Saw Moore get gator arms and drop a beautiful TD pass. I think he's going to get cut.

Schwartz and Miller are big dudes.

WRs in general looked good. Little was taller than I thought and looked like a string bean.

Gordon is easily our best WR and its not close IMO.

Enough of the theatrics ... the Locker room isn't being torn apart.

Wallace can't hit the broad side of a barn and is under 6'.

I would rather see what the Coach seems to see in Lewis, then to put my eggs in Wallace's basket.

LOL, what is he going to do, tell Colt he's grounded and send him to his room with no dessert?

We'll all find out soon enough whether the FO feels Colt is a distraction when he either is or isn't on the roster come game 1. Until then, they sure as hell aren't going to tell any of us about it.

This regime has never taken a shot at any player and I doubt they ever will. Even with hillis acting like a nut they went out to protect them.

Thanks for the update!
