yet not once have I seen anyone in the "get rid of colt" camp say "Seneca is better".

Should I do it? Anyone?

I happen to think that Wallace is better, but I also think that I'd rather keep McCoy.

Board, please feel free to psychoanalyze that one...

Actually I thought you did a great of doing that earlier today. You posed rational questions and reasonable answers as to why you would feel that way.

Be warned though I'm almost positive many saw your post as the words of a madman and totally ignored them. They dont fit the agenda so they will bury them under a pile of nonsense and quotes, although commented on by others with a sense of understanding.

What it's turned into is a "we have to get rid of Colt" thread......

I really don't see that Arch..There are many good posts on here discussing the possibilities of Colt being the back up..What he needs to do to take that roll...and for him to accept the roll...in order to be a good back up..

Some prefer to see Wallace take that roll... And their opinions are that Colt may become a distraction in the locker room...

It's all part of a message board...take it with a grain of salt... I may not agree with what someone says.. but I try to understand and learn from their side of reasoning.. I have seen way worse threads than this one...

Quote:

Weird. 2 arguments for seneca are: 1, he's used to being the backup. (wow, that's one hell of an endorsement), and 2: Seneca is helping Weeden. Well, if seneca is helping weeden..........I pity weeden, because he's being taught by a career backup that hasn't won a starting job anywhere he's been.

I guess your peeing back..but on Seneca...Thats your opinion..I have no problem with it..My response would be...At least he's getting some help..My question would be..who else is there to teach him ? Colt doesn't seem to be willing...and then there's a 3rd stringer....

But then...that's jmo...

I would prefer keeping Colt, if he and his family could trade in their tampons for jock straps. I mean is the whining going to continue when Weeden starts taking 95% of the reps?

I thought Weeden was already taking 95% of the reps....As far as the statements from Colt and his actions.. Whether it be considered whining or frustration..I can't answer that... But I can say that I would like to see support from Colt and a professional attitude if he does get the back up job...

Well other than what you say doesn't make any sense, i'll offer my just as irrelevant opinion.

If the browns thought Wallace was better then he would have been starting last year.

All I have to ask myself is one question. If we didn't draft Weeden then who would the starter be? Colt. The same starter as last year. In his first training camp, and second year in the system.

I don't get all of the arguing over the backup qb. If there is one thing that Holmgren has been totally clear about is that qb competitions hurt both qb's. He has stated that you need to make a decision early, pick a guy, then give him 100% backing. That's what they did last year with Colt.

Now this year they had a chance to upgrade the position. I have a buddy who's opinion i trust, and he knows football, and he was at camp and told me that its night and day. Weeden has an arm, and is more accurate. I'm glad to hear it.

Weeden is now the starter and will have 100% backing from the FO and coaches.

Now i understand everyones rational about getting rid of colt so it doesn't cause a divide in the locker-room. I just don't see it. Right now we have two qb's in development. A starter, and a backup. We know neither of their ceilings. That will take time to sort out. The game hasn't slowed down for either of them yet. Maybe it never will.

If I had to guess what you are thinking, I would say that you think Wallace is the better backup right now. You also think thats its possible that Colt becomes a better backup than Wallace, so you would rather give Colt a chance to learn and develop.

The other side of this, and I hope it don't happen, is that Weeden might not pan out after a few years of play, and Colt will have mastered the system, have a solid line, good running game, and experienced receivers. Thrown into that situation, as apposed to what he was thrown into, he might be good enough to win with, while we develop the next guy.

I still dont see this whining everyone talks about. He was marched out in front of the press on the day he lost his starting job. He said what he felt, and we all knew this was not a compition he lost before he even showed up. He's been working all camp to make himself better and is excited to get to the pre-season and excited to see the team is better.

Again explain to me how that is whining? He was asked about how it felt to lose his starting role. Did he feel he was given a fair chance? If he wants to be traded? Was he given a fair shot? etc. Whats he supposed to say? Yeah Weeden is better then me so I understand and although Im not better then him now I dont think they should have let me compete, its fair? What? just what did you want to hear from the man?

I disagree with this assumption. Based on his rookie year where he outperformed his (zero) expectations, the team thought he would get better. That didn't happen. The Browns stuck with McCoy until they nearly killed him because of their "pick thr guy and stick with it" mantra. There was no QB competition last year for the starting job. just as the year prior, there was no competition for the starting job, which holmgren had reportedly sold Wallace on when he signed up with the Browns.

The same way aaron rodgers Philip rivers steve young and many others did. Not really seeing him meeting those standards but he was supposed to sit for 2 3 years before even seeing a football field. Things didnt work out that way. Its not a problem, we have found someone better, and he can be a backup.

I'm not a Colt (as a starting qb) fan, but saying he's whining is a bit harsh. Those questions were of the difficult baiting type, and there were no good answers he could have given.

I agree, a lot of times reporters poke and prod to try and give these athletes questions which will spark a controversy.

But, with what Pluto was saying, i think there might be more to it, may be mannerisms, etc. Terry Pluto is a journalist or columnist (whatever) who i like

NFL network showed part of Colt's interview this eve and it wasn't a good interview. It made him look much worse imho than the transcript. By the end, he was choked up and ready to cry.

That's what i figured. Pluto is there saying that McCoy has to embrace the role and stuff, but that he wants McCoy to be our backup. He also says that our coaches want that too.

It's not like he's trying to run the guy out of town. He's just saying, you better change your attitude before you lose the chance to play in the NFL, period. Kinda like advice.

Of course, the reporters asking him those questions (and thus making his emotions/feelings visible), obviously doesn't help our perception. I'm sure this is tough for Colt, hopefully he'll be a man about it and embrace that backup role. Prepare for every game, continue to improve yourself, and help the starting QB (thus the team) in every way possible

To bad they didnt show the whole thing so we could have a prespective on it. But given only the partial parts that where released then I guess I cant place any context on anything. Hence what the media wants they can create.

I can't say for sure, but it seems like it was a fairly short interview.

I can't disagree...the goal has always been to find a starter you could win with. Wallace was the proven backup, colt was the unknown. That is why colt was the better qb. Not for what he accomplished, but what he potentially could become.

I would think that if we started wallace then all we would have learned was that we were starting a backup, and still need a starter. Colt had to learn, so we could find out if he could develop into a starter.

Based on last years debacle with hillis, the line, and receivers, I would say that he had a crappy learning environment. Such is life in the nfl. IMO the jury is still out on what colt can become, but right now its weeden's gig. Colt missed the boat.

Suppose that we drafted weeden in the first round, and colt in the 3rd this year. Weeden starts for 2 years. If colt would have got a shot then, knowing the offense, lifting, working on arm strength, experienced line, receivers, and a solid running game in place. How do you think he would have fared? Possibly alot better than what we saw.

It's hard to say .... because would McCoy have worked on arm strength? I don't even think that's his biggest limiting factor. Guys can be very successful with less than rocket launcher type arms. However, if they lack an arm, they better have great accuracy and anticipation. A shorter QB can succeed in the NFL, but he better be very good at finding throwing lanes.

Unfortunately, these were areas where McCoy was, and still is lacking. Further, and I have said this about so many of our QBs over the years, it's hard to take a "careful, cautious" QB and turn him into an aggressive, attacking QB. It is easier to rein in a "mad bomber" than it is to turn an overly careful QB into a guy who will see, and take advantage of opportunities to attack the defense. McCoy, Quinn, and Frye were all cut from this same cloth. They would all rather take a 3 yard "safe" play than to chance a 30 yard play down the field. (even if that 30 yard play appears to be fairly wide open)

The most successful QB we have had in the past 15 years was DA ..... and his success was due to the fact that he would attack the field at all levels. He had major flaws, but he would attack the defense whenever he saw an opening. He threw more TD passes than any other QB in Browns history.

A overly careful and cautious QB will never accomplish anything even remotely approaching that type of production. We have taken all of these guys with major flaws and tried to convince ourselves that they can be fine as "game managers". Game managers rarely win much in the NFL.

Less QB controversy, and mystery starter crap this season is fine with me. This way the starter gets lots of snaps to prepare properly. Splitting snaps to make nice for multiple QBs means some time was wasted and the starter was not as prepared as possible. Enough of going with the gut. Just win, Weeds! I am all in.

Here is an outsiders opinion on our backup Qb situation:

It’s time for the Browns to move on from McCoy

Posted by Mike Florio on August 7, 2012, 9:19 AM EDT

The Browns have a new owner. And as truck-stop magnate Jimmy Haslam tries to get his arms around the football business, he’s got a big decision to make — even if he doesn’t realize how big of a decision it is.

Quarterback Colt McCoy has lost the competition for the team’s starting job. He previously said he had been promised a chance to compete with rookie Brandon Weeden. McCoy now says, publicly, that there was no competition.

McCoy’s agenda is now clear. He wants out. And since there are no Super Bowl trophies to drag around from the bumper of his car, McCoy is relegated to trying to talk his way out of town.

The problem is that team president Mike Holmgren’s head is sufficiently hard to keep McCoy around, if only to prove who’s in charge.

Haslam now needs to show that he’s the guy in charge.

Keeping McCoy, as we’ve said since Weeden was drafted, would be a mistake. If Weeden struggles, McCoy will become the most popular guy in Cleveland. And if Weeden gets dinged up and McCoy gets a chance to play and plays well, the Browns could have another Derek Anderson/Brady Quinn clusterfudge on their hands.

So the Browns need to go with Seneca Wallace as the backup, get what they can for McCoy, and move on. Even if they can’t get anything for McCoy, the Browns need to move on.

Former owner Randy Lerner didn’t want the sale of the team to be a distraction. Why let the backup quarterback become one? The decision to use the 22nd overall pick on Weeden necessarily closed the book on McCoy in Cleveland.

If the first string QB "struggles" or gets "dinged up", don't you want your backup QB to play well? Isn't that the whole idea behind having a competent backup? Florio's talking out his butt, imo.

this writer is a moron....If you think we need to get rid of McCoy...OK...fine....But don't jump to stupid conclusions that you have absolutely nothing with which you back up....

Whoever wrote that seems a bit lacking.

Seriously, as has been the case in Cleveland for years, and as is the case just about anywhere that doesn't have a Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, etc type starter - - - - the backup is always the most popular guy in town if the starter is doing bad.

But then he says "oh golly gee, what if Weeden gets hurt and McCoy plays well......" Uh, isn't that a good thing? Or, if weeden gets hurt, are we supposed to hope our backup (whomever it is) comes in and plays poorly so we don't have a "clusterfudge"?

Is that it? If weeden gets hurt, we want and need our backup to play poorly?

Florio is again, just making noise..

McCoy is so far down the totem pole of problems it's silly.

What about what McCoy said wasn't true?

He said he was promised a competition... does anyone actually believe one existed?

So because the kid tells the truth,, he should be gotten rid of.

If there is a problem, the Browns FO created it.

Right now, we have our #3 pick in the draft with what appears to be a minor knee issue.. isn't that a bigger problem.

We have our first round pick from last season out until Oct. isn't that a bigger problem

We have a starting linebacker out for the season, isn't that a bigger problem

But Florio, in all his wisdom comes up with the biggest headache that haslam will have is McCoy?

He's typing to hear himself type.

Well, actually I'm pretty sure he was saying holmgren is hard-headed and not willing to admit he was wrong about McCoy, but I didn't want to put that particular comment in purple. Just seemed over-the-top.

And as a disclaimer the views provided by the writer do not necessarily reflect the views of the poster

For the record, I posted the article because I thought it would be interesting to hear what somewhat outside the Cleveland fanbase thinks.

As for my personal opinion, I have yet to reach a conclusion. I think there is too much that we are not privy to that could effect the decision.

I agree and have said so since we drafted Weeden.

The sooner we dump Colt, the better. Better for the team and better for Colt.

jc...

Part of the problem as I see it is that the kid has now publicly called his franchise liars twice in the past three months or so, and both times it was with regards to a player who, by all indications, is the better player at the position.

Regardless of whether either instance is true, it doesn't behoove a player that's been demoted to air his dirty laundry with team in public.

What should he have said? "I performed to the very best of my ability with every opportunity given to me by my coaches, and the final decision is up to them. While I may not be happy with the decision, I'll continue to support my coaches and teammates.". That'd be sufficient. Nobody is asking Colt to do cartwheels and be giddy, but he has to learn to keep his emotions in check.

Exactly.

It's said that a backup is playing not only for his job with his current team, but for every other team in the NFL.

When a guy starts having all of these things ..... on top of his father's statement, and his brother's outburst .... then he becomes less and less desirable to other teams.

This is what Pluto was talking about in the article he wrote yesterday, and in his podcast.

Colt tells it like it is, because he was asked and the PD, and now Florio are running with it. Any rational person would have a hard time disagreeing with what Colt said. Critically speaking, i don't see the problem in him being honest. The real issue is that, this SHOULD be a non issue. Who propagates this as an issue? The Media. Every. Single. Time. You haven't seen the team make real wind about it (because they didn't need to, they drafted Weeden to be "the guy" and he's proven he is capable in Camp.) and really, Colt hasn't made wind about it unless you twist his words and read into what he's saying what you want to.

As a fan who feels that Seneca would actually be the better choice, it's hard for me not to sit and defend Colt either. Colt and Seneca from a game play stand point, are both limited QB's who scramble when the pressure is hot, and shy away from making the aggressive pass in favor for whatever dump off pattern is a part of any given play. I don't really see either QB with a "advantage" over the other unless you want to count Seneca's experience.

I called out Seneca for speaking his mind, and frankly I don't think the timing of Colt's comments are that great, and that's probably exactly what Mary Kay was going for when she pressed the interview because Quarterback "controversy" makes for good media. So when there isn't one... you've got to cook one up.

That's what sells press, controversy. It's clear that some of us are eating it up.
