Gordon is easily our best WR and its not close IMO.

DON'T GET ME EXCITED!!

I have heard comments like that from multiple people. While he isn't up against great competition with the other WR's, I heard the guy is just a flat-out freak.

If he pans out, that is one more thing to make the case to keep Heckert around

LOL, what is he going to do, tell Colt he's grounded and send him to his room with no dessert?

We'll all find out soon enough whether the FO feels Colt is a distraction when he either is or isn't on the roster come game 1. Until then, they sure as hell aren't going to tell any of us about it.

If Colt isn't on the roster to start the season, then there could be many reasons why, but being a distraction wont be one of those reasons.

No fan is calling for Colt to start. Colt is not asking to be traded or released, but I guess it wouldn't be Browns football without a QB problem to whine about. At l;east it's not over who the starter will be.

All the guys on "Moving the Chains" on the NFL radio nework feel Colt's going to be traded before camp's over.

When it comes down to it...By keeping Colt...we have a backup to Weedon for his entire career or at least most of it. Can we say the same for Wallace??? How many years does Wallace have left?(really??? I am asking...I don't know)

Every time a players contract ends, you have a chance of him no longer being here. Even if Colt has twelve more years to play, that doesn't mean he'll play them here.

Quote:

I don't see Colt as a problem. I don't see it as a problem with the fans...Even the Colt Supporters can see that Brandon has a better Arm, etc....and it will be evident...And I don't see Colt making waves....He is too much of a professional. Is he dissappointed...absolutely....But he IS a professional

I haven't seen anything from Colt that would indicate he would be any kind of problem. He has always been a class act since he came here.

People can sit here and say what they want to, but if most really think about it, in the NFL, when a QB is "dethroned" from his staring position, how often is he kept around as the back-up?

The fact of the matter is, all the fan base knows as of now, is that Weeden was drafted to be the starter. We haven't seen him throw his first down in an NFL game. Nobody thought the fan base would be screaming for DA or *insert name here*.

I too think Colt would make the best back-up of the choices we have. The problem being, that's simply usually not how it's done in the NFL. Usually, they will show some commitment to a new QB by getting the former starter out of town.

Quote:

Frankly, I think he should call up Ty Detmer..a guy who looked to be destined to be a good starter in the League but became a well respected Backup. Heck even Gannon was a Journeyman Backup forever before he broke out for a few years...(not saying it will happen for Colt..but who knows what the future holds)

You know, this is a two edged sword. Not you specificly, but people sit here and say that Colt wants to start, wants to win and has drive. I don't disagree with that.

But do you honestly think, at his age, he's willing to just give up on being a starter in the NFL? Honestly many fans will always say that his supporting cast wasn't good enough to win. And I can't really say that I disagree with them.

But if we see that and our fans feel that way, don't you think Colt feels that way? Don't you think he wants a chance at a fresh start somewhere else?

PPE mentioned about this FO seeing if Colt was willing to commit to the back-up role here. I feel if you asked Colt you would get pretty much the same reaction as many feel. He hasn't had a fair chance. And as a pro and who wishes to compete and play in this league, he would want a freash start with a true chance to compete.

Now as long as he's here, I don't think you will hear him say that as a Brown, but if you were his age, given the talent he had to work with...... would you be willing to give up and simply accept that your destiny was a back-up QB in the NFL?

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Cleveland Browns' Colt McCoy must realize that being a backup is a good job, so don't mess it up: Terry Pluto's morning blog

It was disappointing to hear Colt McCoy's reaction to not winning the starting quarterback's job.

He is the son of a coach, and he knows that it's the coach's job to play the best men at different positions.

There was no need to see McCoy extensively with the first team offense to realize that Brandon Weeden has the superior arm strength. And Weeden also is the more accurate passer. And Weeden certainly is physically stronger.

I saw about five practices in training camp and several more during the minicamps. It wasn't even close -- Weeden has been the better looking quarterback, period.

McCoy has to accept the fact that he can have a long NFL career as a backup if he plays this smart and stays ready. And he must understand that being a backup NFL quarterback making $550,000 is a good job.

He's not at Texas anymore. And what he did at Texas doesn't matter here.

Nor is McCoy the first quarterback to go from backup to starter to backup. Players such as Ty Detmer, Jon Kitna, Rex Grossman, Vinnie Testaverde and many others bounced back-and-forth between those roles during their careers.

But McCoy also must know that other teams are not demanding his services, or the Browns would have traded him by now. Without saying a word, the rest of the NFL is delivering the same message that Pat Shurmur did: Colt McCoy is a backup.

Every day people are demoted. Many think they think he didn't get a fair shot. Talk to all those who have been laid off and/or had their pay cut while work load increased in the last five years.

As my father often said, "Who says life is fair?"

If life were fair, everyone would be the same size with the same talents and given the same opportunities.

But it's just the opposite -- everyone is different.

I'll never forget the day that I came home from college (I commuted from home.) and found my dad sitting at his desk...staring. It was about 4 p.m. He never came home from work before 7 p.m.

He had been laid off after 30 years in the grocery business. This was during the 1970s economic slump. He went from a supervisor to out the door.

That really wasn't fair to him or the others laid off with him.

The Browns now have to pick between Seneca Wallace and McCoy as the backup. I have long favored McCoy for that role -- but not if he remains in this funk.

Being a backup quarterback for the Browns can be a great job -- especially as only once (Tim Couch in 2001) did the same quarterback start all 16 games since the team returned in 1999.

Now, it's up to him to "act like a professional," as he said was his job.

It's his job to help Weeden perform well and win games. It's his job to take another step down the road of maturity that almost every NFL quarterback must walk -- the road with signs that sometimes say, "Right now, we don't love you...welcome to real life."

I can see a team deciding on a player in that situation because it can tear a locker room apart. It can become a distraction for the team as well. Teams generally try to avoid distractions whenever they can ...... and I suspect that they will in this case as well.

Two preseason games from now, unless Colt looks decidely better than Weeden, the media won't even talk to or about Colt any more. It will be a non-story. It's a story now because the starter was just announced....

The only people making a big deal about it are those on message boards and talk radio who have an ax to grind.... Beginning in a couple weeks the only media time Colt will get is if he makes an appointment... at that point, if he keeps talking about it, I may think he will be a problem... as of now, I can almost guarantee you that nobody in the lockerroom cares.

In his weekly podcast on the Plain Dealer site, Pluto said that McCoy seems like a kid who needs to grow up. He's been just going through the motions much of training camp.

He also said that Shurmur and the coaches would like to have McCoy win the job, but he has to actually act like he wants a job. If there was a market for McCoy, they probably would have traded him by now ..... and that he doesn't think that anyone has even offered a 6th or 7th for him yet.

Sorry not enough! Please elaborate. It is your duty to blokes like me who can't make it and are jonesing for more info!

Quote:

I was at camp yesterday but arrived late like Saintdawg and was not as close to the action as I wanted to be.

But I'll say this about the QBs.

It's obvious Weeden is the best. Throws a really beautiful ball with a lot of touch. He knows when to apply velocity and when to finesse it. As just a thrower of a football he is impressive.

McCoy was easily the second best QB. Much improved velocity. He is also clearly a backup.

Wallace was mostly garbage.

I don't like Colt's attitude and his comment yesterday is leading him to become a distraction. But I'm afraid he would be our best option at #2.

Saw Moore get gator arms and drop a beautiful TD pass. I think he's going to get cut.

Schwartz and Miller are big dudes.

WRs in general looked good. Little was taller than I thought and looked like a string bean.

Gordon is easily our best WR and its not close IMO.

That goes back to what I've said for the past three years now...McCoy has never faced adversity. He's been the golden child since the day he was in Junior High. Everything was handed to him. Now at the NFL level, he's not good enough, so not only is he not being given everything, his pendulum has swung the other way and now he's having things taken from him. Love. Faith. Belief. Admiration. And most importantly, his job. So this is the first time in his life he's faced adversity.

Of course it hasn't helped that his parents and family have fueled this attitude, which can only make it harder for him to learn how to cope with real life.

McCoy is a good guy, but he's very-much a spoiled child. Can he get over this? Probably, but it's up to him.

Bullcrap. He worked his butt off and had success. Do you think the Big 12 just rolled over and agreed to lose all of those games so Colt didn't get his feelings hurt? Yes he has tasted a lot more success than failure but to say he had it handed to him implies that he didn't work for it and that's just crap. Then he came to the NFL and continued to work his butt off.. maybe he has reached his ceiling and he's NOT NFL starter material... The world will go on, but at least give the kid more than a week to come to grips with that and respond...

Daman, I know the media is crazy town but why wouldn't Pluto believe the words coming out of his mouth? Would he just say things just to say them? It's just a funny assertion to me, I would love you to elaborate on.

Here's the preceding sentences:

Quote:

Kinda different context, isn't it.

Nobody is gonna be dumb enough to believe that people like he and Vince Young were "handed" jobs that they weren't good enough to do.

Both guys never had to overcome obstacles...until they got to the NFL.

I'd also say that he's had more than a week to swallow the reality that he's no longer the starter. In fact, if my math is correct, since the draft was April 26th, he's had three months and two weeks to come to grips with the fact he was no longer the starter. He's no idiot. Nobody in his situation would still believe he's the starter. He's had plenty of time to accept it. Don't defend him when he knew damned-well what he said. He didn't have to say that he thought there was a competition. He's whining, purely and simply, in an albeit sophisticated way.

So, as I'd said, can he get past it? Probably, but he isn't helped by his family who hasn't done him any favors.

I'm with Pluto on this one. The time for a pity party is over. He can earn an amazing living as a backup, and may even get another shot as a starter...but it won't happen as long as he's carrying a "woe-is-me" attitude.

I'm pretty sure Pluto believes what he said.. I think ytown added the "much of camp" part. I'm pretty sure what they were talking about was since he realized he wasn't the starter... everything else I've seen and read has been pretty consistent, Colt looks a lot better, but Weeden is still a lot better than Colt.

Glenn Moore said that he was at practice last week, and one thing that stood out to him was McCoy's body language, running through the motions, and it looked like he wasn't urgent and didn't want to compete. Terry Pluto replied: "Um huh." then Moore continued, "He seemed like a guy who gave up." Then Pluto replies" Yeah, or who is just trying to accept his fate."

Pluto then talks about practices, and how they are crisper and more organized than last year.

Then back to Colt, Pluto says "Colt just needs to grow up here."

You can listen to the podcast for yourself. Pluto generally tells it like it is.

That's how I feel. There were rumblings almost immediately after Weeden was taken that McCoy and probably moreso his agent, were going to rattle the Browns' cages.

Like I said before, the best thing he could do is keep his mouth shut, tell his family to shut up, and just play the role of backup. Look at the history of this franchise the last 10 years. Look at the history of this league the last 10 years. Opportunities come. Just ask Matt Flynn.

I think the perfect situation for the Browns would have been for Weeden to start and McCoy to back-up. We know what Seneca Wallace is. I think there are still some things we don't know about Colt. It'd be nice to maybe develop him along as Weeden plays, and maybe you trade him down the line when he's worth something, and if not you have a guy who has learned Shurmur's exact system.

Like I said, I don't really care one way or the other because if we lose Weeden to injury, or if Weeden flames out, this team isn't gonna do anything, anyway. Seneca Wallace and Colt McCoy aren't gettin you out of the AFCN.

I guess they must have edited all of that out of this years camp footage </purple>

Opinions are like ... well you know the rest.

Real or imagined ... I'm mean we are speaking about someones interpretation of another’s body language. Hardly prof positive and air tight evidence to support their claims. Unless their expertise is in reading someones body language.

I did listen to it.

Remember Mary Kay who always knew the WR's were open?

Quote:

Cleveland Browns quarterback Colt McCoy is showing signs of improvement at training camp.

He's made some impressive plays working with the second unit and coach Pat Shurmur is happy with his progress, via Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain-Dealer

Here is another person's opinion...

Quote:

Colt McCoy Responds to Competition: Not that there is a competition, but Colt McCoy is not looking like a wounded animal in practice. He continues getting all of the second-team reps ahead of Seneca Wallace. Whether that is a ploy to try to make him trade-worthy remains to be seen, but I think it is a tell-tale sign: if Weeden gets injured, surely they aren't going to waste so many reps on a guy (McCoy) who might be traded somewhere.

How many more do you want that disagree with him? Those two saw what they saw, others have seen it differently... I'm sure if they could trade him for any value they would, but trading him for a 6th or 7th round pick just to get him out of town, in my own humble opinion, would be assinine.

All I know is that almost everyone has always said how fair Pluto has been to everyone over his very long career ..... and how he's always been a straight shooter.

I see no reason why he would make stuff like this up.

Nobody ever said he was making it up. But judging somebodys body language is an opinion that is open to interpretation and other people, who you have said were credible in the past, seem to disagree with him... you have decided to harp on the guy that agrees with you... we get that.

National media figures are saying that they didn't see improvement from McCoy when they were here.

Frankly, there were 2 days when McCoy seemed like he was starting to show a little improvement, but much of the rest of the days he was his old self.

We'll see what happens by week 1.

In week 1, he'll be on the bench. Tough to show much from there.

Question: what has seneca shown in camp?

Seems to me the media is saying pretty much "nothing", as in he's shown nothing.

Oh, but he's "helping" Weeden. Wow - does it take a line to draw the correlation there?

I am glad they got this done, there was no point in belaboring it any longer: name Weeden the starter, that was he gets the strater reps, starts every pre-season game and the team has a few days to accept him as the starrting QB (assuming they hadn't already) before the pre-season games begin.

As for Colt, as others said he needs to realize that being a backup QB isn't a bad gig, and nor is it a certainty that he won't start again - even in Cleveland.

I'd rarther keep him than Wallace - Wallace blows worse than Colt, imo.

I agree. One thing Toad has been fair in was first giving the kid a chance and while seeing he wasnt the greatest he was also in a bad situation.
The McCoy O Meter may have flatlined but there were no paramedics to help save the patient in the first place.

The part I just dont get from those saying Colt was whineing crying whatever.

He said he thought it would be a competition.

"I've come out here and competed my tail off and I've wroked hard to get better and improve, and I know I have and I know our team has. So, from that standpoint, I am OK."

Im sure he probably did believe in his mind he could compete, which is what we want from him anyway, and learning that you have lost would be disappointing to any player. He says hes getting better and looking forward to the team being better.

I just dont see how else he was supposed to react other then that. Im also pretty sure Colt remembers he got his starting job because of an injury to the starting QB AND the backup QB.

IMHO if Colt wants to go he'll be gone. If Colt wants to stay he'll stay. I would like to see him stay for reasons Toad mentioned.

National media figures are saying that they didn't see improvement from McCoy when they were here.

Frankly, there were 2 days when McCoy seemed like he was starting to show a little improvement, but much of the rest of the days he was his old self.

We'll see what happens by week 1.

That may very well be true but Ive hearing alot more positive reports about McCoys play then negitive and hes playing with mostly the same or worse players then he did last year. Not really much to go by there.
I've heard he's made some good throws that were dropped completed and also has made some horrid throws. Again this is what I would expect from the 2nd team.

Im not saying McCoy should be the starter but to just kill the guy for what the National media precieve to be a horrid team (mostly ranked between 28-32) and have already made up their minds before they got here what they would see it's not all the suprising.

As someone else said, they are saying and seeing what they want to see. Humm first thing I want to see is hows Colt handling about to be demoted. I bet hes going to be in a funk. Oh Look I was right He's in a funk.

In week 1, he'll be on the bench. Tough to show much from there.

The question remains, will it be our bench or someone elses?

We are in need of LB'ers.....

Who knows?

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Remember Mary Kay who always knew the WR's were open?

I gotta wonder...why is when I see something following the three words "Mary Kay said"...that I immediately go into "I don't believe it" mode. Hell, I thought the receivers were far more open than given credit for last year, but now...I'm doubting it.

Back on track, McCoy's not a bad guy, but if he's wilting or walking along kicking dirt, he could use a pep-talk because as it stands right now, McCoy won't get another shot. If he professes his desire and shows enthusiasm, well, as was mentioned earlier, look what a positive attitude and a "I'm gonna be ready when I get my shot" mindset got Matt Flynn.

To Hell with it. I say trade McCoy to the Bengals.

(nah, he's too good a kid for that. )

I dont think we could get a decent back up LB for McCoy at this moment in time only because teams love to pounce on someone they precieve to be down and to many in the media and Im sure some teams GM's as well they are going to test the waters to find a steal not give up anything of value at them moment.

Heckert seems much to smart to just give up talent (no matter what you think of the guy) for free. He Im sure has a price in his head that he would not be willing to move on that price, and I dont see him going any lower that.

No matter what the talking heads say.

Daman, I know the media is crazy town but why wouldn't Pluto believe the words coming out of his mouth? Would he just say things just to say them? It's just a funny assertion to me, I would love you to elaborate on.

Please allow me to elaborate as you ask.

If there is no contraversy, there is no news story to tell. Even the most respectable of the media (and I include Pluto in that realm) has to have a story to tell.

In this case, there really isn't one.. so, what do you do if you are the media..You create a story.

Thus, you have Pluto, a man I generally respect doing just that.

NOBODY can point to anything concrete that says that Colt McCoy wasn't trying to win. but come on, it was a competition that even he knew didn't actually exist

Exactly how excited would you be?

he's going to have a chance in Preseason to show some value. Either he proves his worth to the Browns or someone else and thus becomes trade bait

If you think you are in a fair competition, you fight like hell to win, but if you know the deck is stacked,, you gotta almost say,, why the hell should I show it here, let me show it in a preseason game.

One way or the other, Colt either flops horribly or wins the job back, or plays second banana or gets traded/cut.

and I have to be honest here,, I don't give a damn which. as long as the Browns win, I'm good..

I think this thread should be locked. It's a "Weeden named the starter" thread, and we all knew he would be.

What it's turned into is a "we have to get rid of Colt" thread..........and interestingly enough, those with that opinion offer nothing other than "well, he'll be a problem".............yet not once have I seen anyone in the "get rid of colt" camp say "Seneca is better".

Weird. 2 arguments for seneca are: 1, he's used to being the backup. (wow, that's one hell of an endorsement), and 2: Seneca is helping Weeden. Well, if seneca is helping weeden..........I pity weeden, because he's being taught by a career backup that hasn't won a starting job anywhere he's been.

This discussion has turned from the obvious - Weeden being the starter - into a pee on Colt thread, with no substantiation other than "he might be a problem". Not once has anyone said Wallace is better.

And that, folks, ought to make a few people look at themselves in the mirror.

BINGO and they always seem to forget or poo poo the fact that Colt is a ton of money cheaper and younger and has an upside that Wallace will NEVER see.

Doesn't matter to some. the hatred for McCoy is just horrendous.. and had to basis in fact as it relates to reality.

Having said that, he might be traded,, he might get cut, he might retire..hell if I know.

but I know this, he's better than Seneca Wallace, he's Cheaper than Wallace, He's younger thus has more potential upside than Wallace, and yeah, he might want to fight for the starting job. Do you want a back up that doesn't want to start? Does anyone?

Right now, I look at it as though the Browns spent a 3rd round draft choice on a backup QB.

Given the importance of QB, that makes sense.

Should I do it? Anyone?

I happen to think that Wallace is better, but I also think that I'd rather keep McCoy.

Board, please feel free to psychoanalyze that one...

Sure, I'll analyze it. You're a nut job. There, easy enough.
