Weeden didn't look too great (That one throw to Benjamin was magical)

But I've come to the conclusion, that unless you think starting McCoy makes us a playoff contender (I don't) Then draft/starting Weeden (who clearly has talents McCoy doesn't) is a smart move...

I have no problem starting Weeden at all. Don't believe anything in my post suggested as much.

I don't think he looked awful. I think he just looked like a rookie who needs more time.

Yes but Colt was 5-5 at one point!

And Weeden threww and Interception!

Therefore Colt is better!

its the first preseason game... everyone calm down.

I couldnt see the game. but what im interested in:

Does Weeden call the right audibles?
Does he follow progressions?
Is he reading coverages acurately?
He checkin down on a blitz?

Like ive said all along... Weeden has a big arm but that doesn't make him automatically NFL QB. But lets ride out the preseason and see how much he progresses. If he's not progressing then by all means start Colt. Let Weeden sit. Dont ruin him cuz he isn't capable of coming in and starting right away. Doesn't mean he's a bust or doesn't have what it takes. It simply means he may need more time.

Yea it's hilarious that 1 quarter by each Weeden and McCoy is enough to make a commitment one way or another

As long as Colt McCoy is considered our #2 QB and no team wants to overpay for his services, we keep him. It's been so long since we've had one QB last a whole year that it's better to keep him around. He knows the system and the players well enough and we aren't in a position to just throw away depth, no matter how poorly some may feel he is compared to Weeden because he's still regarded higher than any other QB we have.

If there is a problem, the Browns FO created it.

And what problem is it they created exactly?

Right now, we have our #3 pick in the draft with what appears to be a minor knee issue.. isn't that a bigger problem.

A very minor clean out and he'll be back in a few weeks.not much of a problem.....

Injuires are a problem for every team in the NFL.

See previous comment. But if we have a player we are willing to trade, we may be able to solve that problem.

But Florio, in all his wisdom comes up with the biggest headache that haslam will have is McCoy?

He's typing to hear himself type.

QB contraversies have been a huge problem here since 99 several times. To simply dismiss this as not having a possibility of becoming yet another one is very short sighted IMO.

But to take and indicate his comments sound foolish and dismiss them considering our history is no less unfounded than the comments he made concerning the QB situation.
I'm not backing all of Florios assertions. But I also know this fan base and local media will create a QB contraversy at the drop of a hat.

And you do too.....

i would like to state that Tim Couch never had a chance. his o-line was one of the worst in history. and your leading receiver is kevin johnson? and your running back is .... who? i forget. was it james jackson?

And he is also a prime example that no matter the circumstances a QB is forced to play in, he can be judged on his ability to succeed based solely on "his game" and progress.

I mean his supporting cast was poor too. He was replaced too. Where is he now? Colt was judged on his game just like Couch was. And the end results of both will be a mirror image of one another.

Had Couch not gotten broken (elbow)
And we had actually built a good team.
I could imagine a 2011 SF type season where he leads us "somewhere"

Obviously NONE of that happened...

And people "imagined" these exact same things about Jeff George (1990), Rick Mirer (1993), Heath Shuler (1994) , Ryan Leaf (1998), Joey Harrington (2002), Vince Young (2006), JaMarcus Russell (2007)........

I've seen this happen often when people "imagine what might or have happened, rather than look at the reality of what 'did happen".

I hope beyond hope that Weeden is successful, but I will say for the record that Colt made that exact throw last year and was accused of leading the WR out of bounds on what should have been a touchdown if the ball had been placed "correctly"....

If he lead the WR out of bounds...

Then it wasnt the exact same throw...

Had Colt thrown that, Benjamin would of had to stop, wait for it, (wonder who shot the duck) and then fight the CB for it...

In Dayton the game is just now getting ready to be broadcast.

I will say that comparing what I saw from Colt last year, I think many have taken sides on the issue of Colt and how much was, and how much was not his fault is either minimized or exagerated depending which side each person has taken in that debate.

IMO Colts performances often varied from game to game. Sometimes he led his WR's well. Sometimes he seemed to throw behind them.

But yes, some seemed to blame everything on Colt and some seemed to blame everyone else but Colt.

I don't beieve either of those two scenarios as accurate....

Nevermind. Colt sucked, never made a good throw, Weeden will save us... All hail Weeden and his magical throw. Forget I tried to say fanything about the rampant lack of objectivity in here.

I don't think it was all that objective. It was a good throw to the outside shoulder.

Colt just thrw them out of bounds.

At any rate, it doesn't matter. Colt will be traded and we will go with Weeden, Wallace, and Lewis.

I like Lewis....he brings some legs in to the equation. That is perfect for a 3rd string guy. That might actually steal you a win out of a bad situation.

I say cut Wallace, and just keep Lewis.. He kinda reminds me of a poor mans McNair/McNabb.

I still think that we'll trade McCoy and go with Weeds, Wallace, and Lewis.

Next year Lewis will be the primary backup.

Man was he impressive last night ..... especially considering that he's had very few reps in camp.

so what? he had those same type of players blocking for him too.. he made the best of the situation he was put in. and for the most part capitalized on it.

That's true ..... and I wouldn't put him into the #2 this year ...... but he showed nice touch on his throws, solid accuracy, excellent leadership ... and did so with almost no practice time in camp.

You definitely have to take into account that he was playing against guys who will be fighting for a spot at the bottom of a roster at best, and against mainly simple defenses, but he still showed a lot of good things.

I am not so sure about that. I would get rid of Wallace. We will see. I think Mike keeps Colt as backup.

I would put Lewis as the #2 this year. We are going with Weeden (good or bad) unless he gets injured. If we need to go with the #2 guy we are not going to win many games regardless of who he is. So why not go with Lewis and see what we have in him (not sure why we didn't try him at the end of last year after if became clear we weren't going to win with Wallace). And in the process we get rid of Wallace's contract (big for a mediocre at best backup Qb) and the drama that goes with Colt.

And the real question is: Can you blame the new owner if, after year three of the Walrus-Regime, we win 3 games and he decides to clean house?

Frankly, I don't see any real progress relative to the amount of time Holmgren has been pulling the strings.

Sure, one can argue that we've acquired more "talent" but we hear that every year. The very bottom line is that it appears we're going to be a very sorry team, again. Nobody knows if Weeden is going to be great (I've seen nothing in him that makes me giddy) and before anyone blames being bad on injuries, every team in the NFL has them. Good teams with injuries win and bad one's don't.

It's too bad, really. I believed in the 3-4. I still do. We just sucked at acquiring the right people. I believe in the WCO, but so far have sucked at acquiring the right people. Someone has to answer for that, and his name is Holmgren, especially after doing jack-crap in free agency then turning a 180 and gambling for the here-and-now with draft picks featuring a 29-year old rookie QB and a 3-time drug test failing WR who lied about it just a month ago.

Unless this team seriously overachieves in terms of improvement someone is going to have to pay the price.

Wallace's comments offseason comments rubbed me the wrong way. Wallace might command a bit more on the trade market (bag of balls instead of a bag of kicking tees).

After watching the game I think Weeden possesses the tools and the mantality to succeed. I also feel McCoy should be kept as the back up and should be allowed to continue his development. Wallace is a career back-up, and has been successful as one. I think we could get more from trading him than Colt, plus his salary is way too high. I say trade him and his salary and obtain a LB.

Didn't get to see Lewis, but in the preseason if you are playing in the fourth quarter, the competition is very questionable. I recall a great quarter from Bartell a couple years ago.

Weeden was 3 for 9, had a pick and a stripped ball. I don't consider that a fumble. He did show enough sense to try and make it look like his arm was in motion, that shows me he has some brains. The drops continue, and that won't look good in his stat line, but all in all, I think he showed some skills.
