Matter of fact Brady looked like he was staring down receivers. Manning looked like he was watching the rush more than Downfield and Rodgers looked like he never played before.
So.....now you tell me about these guys upcoming seasons with what they did?
Come on guys..really.....

Aaron Rodgers looked bad early in his career. Heck the Packers spent two draft picks on his replacement. Now he just played the greatest all around season I've ever seen from a QB.

Yes. I can already tell unless Brady picks up his game in this next game he might be on the verge of losing his starting job. of course that is from what I saw last week and my assumption of what my keen talent lading prognosticating self can gather from a couple series.

what? they spent 2 draft picks on his backup, not replacement.

they trusted him enough to tell Favre to take a hike when he wanted to come out of retirement (again).

4,038 yards, 28 TDs and 13 INTs is bad?

In 08 they drafted Brohm and Flynn, Rodgers had yet to start a game for them, kind of early for a replacement, no?

Or maybe, because they just traded Favre, they needed backups..?

Two draft picks on his replacement? You mean Brian Brohm and Matt Flynn, both picked as later round picks just to see what they have were replacements?

Aaron Rodgers has looked nothing but good his entire NFL career, if you think anything else you are delusional.

Not disputing backup vs replacement but for clarification Brohm was taken in the 2nd round. I wouldn't call that a later round pick. 56th overall. Rodgers went 24th. Only a 22 pick difference.

I don't see that as stirring the pot or a negative article.

Just read the boards for the public's opinion....many are writing him off...Grossi is right on point.

Writing him off now is just as stupid as annointing him would be if had a great game.. which is his point. Give the guy time to work a few things out.

odd... he looked like a deer in headlights to me. rewatch the game and you will see that he looked lost/overwhelmed.

I would just have to say that's a matter of perception. I DVR'd the game and watched Weedens playing time over several times.

From my obsevations I did sense an underlying tone of frustration which I would have expected from his performance. But during his playing time on the field I didn't see any "deer in the headlights look" that you seem to indicate that you saw.

And as what I think was a further indication of this, is as soon as he was removed from the game, on the sidelines I saw him very cool, calm and collected going over things with the QB coach.

Quote:

I am sure that he will get better as time goes and the jitters will subside.

I didn't see the whole "jitters thing" either. I'm not saying which one of us is right or wrong. But what I will say is different people can look at the exact same thing and take away from it very different perceptions of what they did and didn't see.

what i saw was when they zoomed in on him in between plays etc and he looked overwhelmed. He looked like he was lost (kinda expected for his first game) I don't know how everyone else saw different. I was just trying to view in 3rd person

Agreed that we saw different things and that's ok. I think he has the potential to be a great QB. I really believe it will boil down to his self esteem and how he handles the first year as a starting QB in the NFL. Especially playing for the Browns

I understand you have the tendency to be a condescending troll that adds little to any actual discussion other than the occasional roll eyes gif, but allow me to educate you. Favre was retired already and Rodgers was not a proven commodity. Rodgers was a project coming out of Cal because his mechanics were off. He did not show much promise in his time he saw the field in 3 years. Thompson drafted Brohm to either be the starter or push Rodgers.

My point was Brohm was not picked to be Aaron Rodgers replacement. They were picking him to find a solid backup and hopeful that Brohm really did not fall off the face of the earth in his last year at college. If anyone actually think they picked Brian Brohm to "replace" Aaron Rodgers, a guy the shoved Brett Favre out the door for, then they are crazy.

Aaron Rodgers hadn't even gotten a chance to play a full year by the time they drafted Brohm, and he was drafted the year Favre left. That left them with Rodgers and nobody, leading to them needing a QB. They saw value in Brohm and took him accordingly. You don't pick someone to replace a QB you spent a first round pick on and sat for 3 years learning from one of the best QBs of all time.

all factual statements.

are you talking about the whole 28 passes he threw in 2007 in mop-up duty for Favre (who never missed a game in the GB uniform while Rodgers was there?). his QBrating was above 100 that year.

2007 preseason he was 62% 6.5YPA 3TD 0 INT for a 98.3 QBrating. not that it matters much being preseason mostly against backups (and Sage Rosenfel led all QBs in rating that preseason).

Quote:

Thompson drafted Brohm to either be the starter or push Rodgers.

regardless, Thompson felt secure enough in Rodgers that when Favre wanted to come back to GB, he told him no. Could you imagine the fallout of the Favre-obsessed GB faithful if he was wrong about Rodgers? He felt confident enough to make the move and to stick with the move.

Brohm and Flynn were to make sure he had a good insurance policy at backup QB (as GB had been spoiled with Favre's health, so why risk not having an option).

In limited duty his first 2 years his QB rating was 39.8 and 48.2 respectively...

Then he drafted another QB in the 2nd round...

I have seen 2008 draft grades list it both ways.. some say he was drafted as a backup, others said Brohm was drafted in case Rodgers didn't work out... in the end, what does it matter?

When Brohm and Flynn were drafted, Rodgers blew it up the season after. People forget the 3 years prior where he was below average at best. Thompson drafted those two for the purposes I mentioned.

Overall Rodgers did put up very good numbers his first year as a starter... he also took a team that was 13-3 the year before and went 6-10.... So its not like he answered every question...

Below average at best? The dude threw 15 passes and sat behind Brett Favre. What the hell are you basing him being "Below average at best" on? Come in a game, throw a few passes having no rhythm and being a young QB. In 2007 he was 20-28 when he had a chance to play. The following year they drafted Brohm. Clearly they thought Rodgers was good enough to start and play well when they told Favre no when he asked to come back. There really is no debating this, if they didn't think Rodgers was good enough, they would have happily welcomed Favre back.

A young team without an offensive line and one of the worst defenses in the league will do that. The Packers actually had a top 10 offense that year and a bottom 10 defense, so I really don't think you can pin anything on a first year starting QB that put up 28 tds and 4k yards.

how can he be considered below average when he threw 59 passes in 3 seasons and only got into those games in pure mop-up duty?

he was a complete unknown (other than GB coaching staff).

Actually in 05 he played in 2 games, in one of those he threw 15 passes... in 06 he played in 2 games, in one of those he threw 12 passes.. both times he was horrible.. then he had one game in 07 where he got to throw 28 passes and he looked pretty good... so clearly based on that they knew he was the guy for the future.

I think using younger quarterbacks isn't an apples to apples comparison though.

Rodgers was drafted at 21. Weeden was drafted at 28. Time is on your side with one, not on your side with the other.

If Weeden spends 3 years figuring out what he should be doing, he'll be 32 and potentially on the downslide of his career. He needs to immediately be better than Colt or the whole thought process on taking him made absolutely no sense.

I'll reserve my judgement for the regular season, as these glorified scrimmages mean nothing but the thought that Rodgers, Manning, etc. "weren't any good to start with" just cannot apply to someone who is 7-8 years older. Weeden is already halfway through his playing window and he hasn't taken a single NFL snap. He doesn't have the luxury of "coming along slowly". He better grasp the NFL game quickly or the Browns will have to waste another pick to cover up the mistake.

I really, really, really, really hope he plays well but I was never in love with taking a player who was already in his late 20's. It could prove to be a great move but it's much more of a long shot than him turning out to be a below average QB (who's with a different team in 2 years).

He doesn't have the margin of error players like Rodgers and Manning had (i.e. his current age doesn't allow him to come along slowly). I'm not advocating running him in to the ground but if you wanted a developmental QB, then Weeden should not have been the pick. He won't be afforded the longer timeline that a younger player would.

I agree with that completely. If you wanted a guy that might be really good 3 years from now then they should have just taken Tannehill and passed on Richardson. At least you would have had a good 10 years left after you endured the 3 years of growing pains... if Weeden has 3 years of growing pains, then we will be lucky to get 5 good seasons out of him.

I never said anywhere that they knew Rodgers was going to be what he is today, I simply stated they did not draft Brohm to replace Rodgers. They drafted him to possibly compete and most likely back-up Rodgers. They didn't turn down Favre's request to come back because they thought Rodgers was going to be awful, they clearly thought he would be good. Basing anything off of part-time duty spread across 3 seasons is asinine. They obviously thought highly enough of him to draft him as Favre's successor in the first round and developed him properly. You can read into what I am saying or put words in my mouth all you want, fact is the Packers did not draft Brohm to REPLACE Rodgers, he hadn't even gotten a chance to start at that point.

Unless you were being sarcastic with your last statement and ripping on something someone else said, I don't understand the comment
