I don't blame Shurmur at all. We don't need another injury.

Especially since it was a no tackle drill and he had been warned already - good for shurmir - hope it doesn't happen again

I wasn't making THAT incident into something more. It's him not listening, and previously (allegedly) testing positive for a banned substance.

He was popping Adderall. Seriously? How juvenile. I like the guy, he's actually my favorite player on the team, but gotta say it's a bit disappointing to hear that he may be popping Adderall.

If you let today's athletes play like they played "back in the day" everyone would get injured, and someone would probably get killed.

Larry Czonka..use to beat his fore arms with a 2 by 4 so he could knock players down with them when he ran...I don't think the players now have near the meanness as the boys back then....

Bentley got hurt how ? these players are bigger...but I still think the old boys are tougher...jmo...

Shurmur was right to yell and even throw Joe out if he had been warned!!... But I like little Joe getting after it!!!

Your way off the mark with that comment ..

Today's over paid /candy ass players never would have made it through training camp back in the day .. They run a couple of running plays in a row and take them selves out of the game , give me a break .. DB blows on a Wide out and they pass interference ( Joke ) .. and so and so on .. No one wants players go down .. This a game for Gladiators not Baseball players ..

Yes I;m showing my age and yes you are showing your youth !

Do you feel that the NFL did an adequate job treating concussions back in the 60's 70's?

Not sure why your're playing the concussion card here..The discussion was on the toughness of practices and game playing...

there was a whole different mindset back in those decades...Im sure they were problems...but all i remember is watching guys have grass and mud hanging off their face masks...don't recall hearing much on concussions...

The significant difference is that those old-days training camps HAD to be tough because they didn't make enough money to sustain 12 months a year and took on other jobs during the off-season (many did). Those camps were to get those guys in shape in a matter of weeks. Today's players train all year round. There is no use for the brutal camps anymore.

As far as them being candy-ass, someone could obviously make the point that being a hard-ass leads to long term health issues. These "tough guy" Gladiators from years past are in TERRIBLE health at relatively young ages now. Oh, so-and-so was a beast of a linebacker in the 70's? That's great. Today he needs help putting his pants on and can't remember his wife's name most of the time. Congratulations!

Also, there is the business side of it. Owners have a LOT of money invested in these guys (for better or worse) and any smart business man knows you protect your investment. Not only individuals but the NFL knows that their product is better (and more lucrative) when the best players are on the field. The rules are designed to protect the players health, protect the owners investment and protect the ratings of the games.

So you can blah blah blah all you want about "the good old days" but the NFL has never been more popular than it is now.

Look Dawgs ; We all love the game of football and we are all Fan-a-tics about the Browns .. We are are going to have generational view points .. I will always contend that today's athletes are bigger / faster than those of a bygone era .. However I am not sure how they would match up against the old timers for four quarters and 16 games and old time rules .. .. Joe Turkey Jones / Mean Joe Green ans rest would kill them some QB's today !

back to topic, I didnt think he deserved to be tossed over that. Now if he would of TJ Ward-Jordan Shipley hit him thats one thing, but it looked like he fell and grabbed....didnt look dirty or trying to hurt anyone.

They wouldn't even get near a QB today. Heck, some of them would be getting pancaked every other play.

Joe Green would have to move to DE to even get a roster spot, he's too small for DT today.
Guys like Deacon Jones and Too Tall Jones would be merely average in size and would have to hope to be of average speed these days. Joe Thomas would abuse them.

Without the head slap, Deacon would be lost.

Turkey Jones would have to hope to make it at LB, or he'd have to put on about 20 lbs. He was 6' 6", he might have been able to play TE.

That's a good and bad argument.....it's like saying Wilt couldn't dominate in today's NBA because he was too thin. But, if he was growing up in this generation, he'd have better access to nutrition, weight training, coaching and also know the history of what is needed to be in the NBA now. So he becomes a completely different "Wilt"...right?

I don't think the guys in any previous generation were tougher. If you play in the NFL, 50's or 10's, you're tough, period.

Yeah, that was my point. I was already a little peeved that he was popping amphetamines (allegedly), then he gets warned by your coach to tone it down, and he didn't.

end of camp, guys are a little chippy.

Who knows, maybe he was just amped up on some Adderall and was a little on edge? Nothing wrong with that, right?

Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of his ADHD was affecting him, so he needed back on the Adderall. Because he obviously wasn't listening to what Shurmur was telling him.

Come on man....you are way wrong.....Wilt would still be a dominate force today.

Wilt was the best basketball player ever. If he decided to play O, then he scored. If he decided to play D, balls were swated all over the place.

I really don't have an opinion on this subject ... it's difficult to compare dominant players from different eras because there are so many variables.

However, as a basketball player, coach, and fan, I must disagree with your statement that Wilt is the "best ever." I'm not disputing that he's "one of the ..." But I must say Michael Jordan is the best player ever.

They can be "tougher" or whatever all they want.

It's not ganna help them when Calvin Johnson is beating them by 20 yards down the field.
