yeah, I think that idea sounded better for them when he was their starting C instead of the backup. they also signed Kwame Brown to a 2yr deal.

the magic got several picks. which they could parlay into talent...over the next 5 years they get picks so they have plenty of time to get there
They could have Trey Burke/Ryan Harrow, CJ Fair, Patric Young, Christian Watford, among others around that range...through a pick late in the 1st
as well as maybe a player like Nerlens Noel, Cody Zeller, Shabazz Muhammad, Alex Pothyress...with their own horrible season pick
or they could trade some picks and take 2 of them...
This trade while it looks ugly for Orlando so far...they unloaded a headache in Dwight and a bad contract in JRich...and they got a few players and picks. Harkless could be good, Afflalo is good depth, Al Harrington is starter quality, Vucevic, Eyenga, and McRoberts suck...but come cheap.
They'll be bad, but with some maneuvering, could end up for the better after this season. If they picks can become something...good drafted players and/or players could have it positive for them...
they need to do well in the future to make this work for them

And so were the Cavs ... in fact, most of the trades scenerios involving the Rockets, Nets, Cavs and Lakers all seemed better than this one.

Because then they'd just end up being Magic-West... And Howard would just leave them...
I think (maybe I'm biased) Our offer was one of the best, maybe they don't want AV, but they could EASILY ship him to a contender (he'd be great in Boston) for something...

the picks they got are all late lottery at best (protected) and not coming for years in some cases (earliest 2017 from Lakers)
so, in 5 years they'll have a chance to draft someone that has a 25% chance of being a rotation player (according to NBA draft analysis this is what guys in the 20s generally turn out to be)
I thought New Orleans did real well in their trade last year. This one, it stinks. Maybe Orlando should get David Stern to be their GM.

Are the Magic planning on relocating or something?!? Fire a good GM... Fire a good coach... and trade league's best center for virtually nothing after turning down (seemingly) better deals.... I'd be TICKED if I was one of their fans....

Orlando had a couple nice peices (guys like Courtney Lee etc.) and went to the NBA Finals.
Then Otis thought trading for Vince Carter was a GOOD idea...

It was a panic move. I thought they were doing ok with running the team and trying to keep Dwight there until that point. Otis Smith is a good GM but he just panicked.
He gets shredded for making that move, Danny Ferry got shredded for never making that kind of move. You can't win when you're in positions like both of those guys were.

I liked Ferry, he was in an impossible position.
We got too good too fast, couldn't get any other high picks (and looking back, the drafts after LeBrons kind of sucked, barring getting Howard the next year)
I think what he just did in ATL in the span of a week was amazing. While some fans there may be annoyed they are going to suck for a bit, they are officially out of the 4/5 seed HOLE they were stuck in forever.

Ferry's time in Cleveland dealing with being good right away (playoffs in his first year) and dealing with a mega-star like Lebron will pay off huge for him.

I remember in 08 I got up at 330 in the morning to watch the final against spain. today I got a few hours extra sleep, and didn't bother getting up until it was over.. A lot has changed in 4 years.

I'm not going to say I didn't care, but I didn't care that much at all one way or the other. I would have rather seen Spain win it to be honest.

Apparently there were talks of a Minny/Cle trade of Ridnour/Derrick Williams for AV.
Those may have died.
Which is somewhat of a shame.
A solid backup PG (need one) and a (young) guy we could plug in at SF? (oval peg, round hole)

yeah, Jeremy Pargo really struggled last year though he had some good reports coming out of Gonzaga (our current backup PG). I don't like Ridnour, but he's a decent backup PG.
the real question is if Derrick Williams (who really struggled trying to convert to SF for Minny, which is why his name keeps popping up in trade rumors) is worth trading AV.
i'd think, at this point, that he is not unless we see Derrick Williams as someone who we can play at PF long-term. he could be our "Ryan Anderson" so to speak. he struggled mightily with his 3pt shot last year but he was so good at AZ that I imagine that should improve.
it's interesting to ponder but I can see why both sides might have reasons to walk away.

Wow.. but who knows by 2017, UNC will suck because they will just be getting off sanctions, Coach K will have retired and Duke will suck, Kentucky's starting roster is going into 8th grade right now, Georgetown might have a white guy on the team... and Portland will be the team everybody comes to see.

I feel bad for the fans in Sacramento. They loved their Kings when I lived there (99-02) and it is their ONLY pro-team (though they support the AAA Rivercats) and have no major college team either. But, at this point, it's readily apparent that the Maloofs are moving the team. San Jose/Santa Clara, Seattle, and now Virginia Beach are all on the table (along with the never-ending speculation of Vegas). It has got to be heart-wrenching for the fans to know the team is moving and yet have all those efforts stalled so that the team is pretending like it "might" stay. Not even saying they "will" stay at this point as a mirage. Anyways, the latest: http://www.news10.net/news/article/206972/2/Comcast-would-seek-pro-team-to-fill-new-Va-Beach-arenaI would think VaBeach is not close enough to any major city to be a serious contender. 2 hours from Richmond (which is about the same to DC - though closer in time due to DC-traffic). Too far from Raleigh to even consider it. I'd really think that Richmond or Raleigh (in particular Raleigh) would be better candidates if the Kings moved East. But really, with teams already in Charlotte and DC along with all the major college bball programs, I don't see how another NBA team could thrive in that area. Largest Metro Areas without a NBA team: #12 Riverside/SanBernarndino/Ontario (though Lakers/Clips would protest) #15 Seattle #17 San Diego #18 Tampa / St.Pete #20 Baltimore Sacramento is #25 Cleveland is #28 Virginia Beach is #36. Salt Lake is #48, OKC is #43, Memphis is #41 and Milwaukee is #39, so there is hope I guess for them, but it seems like a new owner would go with a more stable option (even if you included 100% of Richmond with them, they would still be far below Seattle in overall terms).
