Report: Jeff Demps eyes NFL spot
Updated: August 14, 2012, 2:27 PM ET
ESPN.com news services

Former Florida running back Jeff Demps, who won a silver medal at the 2012 London Games as part of the men's 4x100 relay team, hopes to sign with an NFL team, NFL.com reported Tuesday.

The website, citing a source close to the former Gators star, reported that Demps has signed with an agent and is hoping to play for an NFL team this season.

Demps went undrafted after he informed teams he was pursuing track fulltime.

Demps finished his Florida career with 2,470 yards rushing and 23 touchdowns.

He had 569 yards rushing and six touchdowns last season. He also was a dangerous kickoff returner, averaging 28.8 yards per return in his four-year career.

He didn't run in the 4x100 final, where the U.S. team finished second behind Jamaica, but still received a medal for competing in the qualifying round.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

did you have to post this story literally minutes after Bouchette (Pitt-Gazette) posted as story about Redman getting a MRI on his groin (and Mendenhall being slow in recovery - and Pitt also having Rainey from Florida as their scat-back, so a friendly face for Demps).

Ugh.

I'd sign him.

Yes, I know I am a Gator HOMER, but the guy has skills and he is fast as blazes.

I wouldn't say sign him if I didn't think he could add something.

I don't really know enough about the kid to say.

What I will say is he would add a deminsion we don't have.

A quick "scat back" type RB with world class speed.

I guess at that point you would have to weigh the price he would command and if that is a deminsion you want for the price it would command.

Sounds very interesting though......

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

He would have been drafted if he didn't have the Olympic dream....Now that's over, so he is back to football.

He will be signed by Sunday.

You're right though.

I've said numerous times that I love the kid. I wanted him and Rainey on our team.

I am usually right, but we will leave that be.....I know you liked both of them, and so did I.....they can bring it. Give them a crease of any sort and they can scamper through it, then juke the rest.

If it was me, he would be signed in the morning and returning kicks tomorrow in GB.

He'd be a very intriguing pickup.

I'd say sign him and cut Ogbonnaya.

After watching that video I concur with the above post, try to sign this kid and dump Obi... What speed... He looks faster than Benjamin. He's an Olympic sprinter so I would hope so...

I believe he will. The NFL Network has reported the Bucs are very interested in him as well as some other teams.

There's no doubt the kid has talent. I'm just not sure how much and what it's worth from a dollars and cents point of view.

Like I said earlier, I really don't know enough about the kid to say..................

I watched that highlight film .... WOW he's FAST!

Honestly, I'd sign him just for the heck of it. I'd MUCH rather have that kind of speed in the slot than have an extra FB in Marecic or an extra TE in Smith

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Just clickin,
Please, if I were the Browns, I would call old Urban Myer and get Demps direct number pronto. Then I would be on the first thing smokin' down to FLA! But that would make too much sense for the Browns to do!!

I wonder what the CBA says about UDFA contracts (total $, signing bonus caps, etc). I also wonder if he used this olympics thing to avoid the draft and pick his own team.

I'm surprised no one threw a 7th rounder on him.

Assuming he'd wanna play football when the olympics are over...

Yeap, he still could have been drafted in April. Teams passed and now he is free to sign with whatever team he likes.

lol, yeah... because that's all the Olympics are to an athlete, an avenue to manipulate their NFL career from the bottom up.

That's a huge risk to take. What if he pulled a hammy at the olympics? Then the plan would have blown up in his face.

I would bet he's going to get a pretty standard UDFA contract....those are awfully cheap compared to being drafted in the 3rd or 4th round. And considering he's a RB.....he could be battered and abused for a few seasons for almost nothing.

All to pick the one team he wants to play for.....nah.

As for signing Demps, I wouldn't come to Cleveland if I were him (drafted T.Rich, losing culture, tough division, new owner, hot seat coach/GM/pres and a big question mark on the QB position).

Green Bay needs RB help, they are a Super Bowl contender.

Seems like a better deal then getting drafted by us anyways.

I'm not saying he PLANNED to go to the Olympics JUST so he could be an UDFA...

But if the thought wasn't in the back of his (or his agents) mind I'd be surprised.

I certainly didn't mean to indicate that he'd go to the Olympics just to choose what NFL team he played for, but when he said he was "going to focus on track & field full-time" did he know he would come back after the Olympics?

A lot of guys would rather choose their situation than be a sixth- or seventh-round draft pick.

Didn't they just sign Cedric Benson? Not that that would prohibit them from signing this guy...

Born in Florida, raised in Florida, college in Florida... my guess he's not going to Wisconsin or northern Ohio to at least play 5 or 6 games a year in freezing weather if he has a choice.... $20 says he signs where there is better weather.

I was under the impression that in order to sign with a team, one had to declare for and enter the draft. Perhaps I'm mistaken. Did this guy declare for the draft?

TB apparently has interest but they just drafted a 1st round RB and have Blount as well. Miami has a littany of RBs and Reggie is their Demps-role guy. NO has Sproles. ATL has Norwood.

Wait a second. It's obvious. There is no doubt. Oakland has McFadden but he cannot stay healthy. They lost their backup (Bush) this past offseason. And, it would be seen as a great tribute to Al Davis by signing a track medalist.

Get it done Oakland.

That's why when the whole "LeBron in the NFL" thing came out, I was super confused on how James would have been able to just signed with any team if it actually came true?

there is some type of grace period at which point you no longer have to declare for the draft. not sure exactly what those rules are in the new CBA.

I take it that gets thrown out if you're a 28 year old senior then?

Can we get our #22 pick back and sign Weeden as a FA?

only if we could go back in time to before he went back to OkieState . I do believe we could have signed him as an UDFA if we picked him up as a failed minor league pitcher instead of as a college player.

I don't think that is the case. As long as you are as old as the graduating college senior class, you can draft anybody you want.

I believe Bolt could be drafted and that team would hold his rights for a year.

Sign him today and put MoMass on PUP to make the spot. DOUBLE deep speed AND Weeden's arm . . . Priceless.

but, if the NLFPA ever votes on it, you can put a player on the special "1st half of season IR"

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/825507...eadline-matters

Quote:

The NFL notified teams Thursday that it has not yet received approval from the Players Association for rule changes involving the injured reserve list and the trade deadline, according to a source.

The changes were made to let teams know that they might not be able to designate one player per team to a special injury list that would allow the player to return to the roster in eight weeks and to the practice field in six weeks. The rule change, which was voted in by owners in May, would provide an extra roster spot to temporarily replace a player who suffers a major injury but would be able to return for the second half of the season.

Under the current rules, if a player suffers a major injury before the regular-season opener and the team doesn't have the roster space to carry him until he's healthy, the player is put on IR and is lost for the season.

The other rule change in flux has to do with the trade deadline. Owners approved a two-week extension of the trade deadline in May. Instead of the deadline ending after the sixth week of the regular season, the new rule would extend the deadline to the Tuesday of Week 8 at 4 p.m. ET.

Both rule changes were made to provide teams with more roster flexibility. The change to injured reserve effectively adds jobs for players.

Any changes on rosters and jobs must be collectively bargained. Although there is no anticipated negotiation needed for these two rules, the union must approve them before they are implemented.

And Taylor is destined to take the spot on the "1st half IR".

no, Taylor is a PUP guy. he was out before training camp started, so there is no need to place him on the special IR list.

that list was generated for guys who get hurt in training camp so that teams don't have to "hold" a roster spot for them.

He was hurt in an organized team activity. (weight training)

He cannot go on the PUP.
