Jordan Shipley’s time in Cincinnati has come to an end.
The Bengals waived Shipley, their 2010 third-round draft pick, they announced today.
Shipley showed a lot of promise as a rookie, catching 52 passes for 600 yards and three touchdowns. But he suffered a torn ACL in Week Two of last season, and 11 months later his knee is still bothering him. Shipley h²s played in both of the Bengals’ preseason games but caught just one pass for four yards.
If a receiver-needy team wants Shipley, he’ll be available on waivers. If he can get back to full speed, he could be a good young addition to some team’s receiving corps.

If Colt McCoy was still our starting QB I would be all for Shipley. He's not, so I'm not.

Shiply was pretty good that first year.. I imagine he can get back to that at some point.

Could be kind of awkward with he and TJ Ward on the same team...

I really liked Shipley coming out of college - sorry to see him get cut... I'm sure someone will give him another chance.

Wow, is their receiving corps really that stacked that they're jettisoning him now? Code:
85 Armon Binns WR 22 6-3 210 1 Cincinnati 18 A.J. Green WR 24 6-4 207 2 Georgia 16 Andrew Hawkins WR 26 5-7 180 2 Toledo 17 Vidal Hazelton WR 24 6-2 209 1 Cincinnati 15 Justin Hilton WR 23 6-2 190 R Indiana State 82 Marvin Jones WR 22 6-2 195 R California 83 Kashif Moore WR 23 5-9 180 R Connecticut 89 Taveon Rogers WR 22 5-11 190 R New Mexico State 12 Mohamed Sanu WR 22 6-2 210 R Rutgers 19 Brandon Tate WR 24 6-1 200 4 North Carolina 88 Ryan Whalen WR 23 6-1 200 2 Stanford Obviously they keep Green, Jones, Sanu, and Tate... but which guy or guys are pushing Shipley off the team? They have one WR with more than 2 years experience. *edit* maybe we should claim him and trade Shipley + McCoy straight up for Jordy Nelson.

As the saying goes, You can't make the Club from the Tub. If he hasn't recovered from that ACL, yet, and they cut him, I'd imaging that it means that he likely isn't close to recovering.

I understand what you are saying, but maybe there is more to this cut than meets the eye. Maybe Shipley isn't happy being #4 and has said so....and the coach sees some other kid with slightly less talent who is busting hump to make the squad. Possible??

Bengals fan here. Normally I wouldn't comment and just let you guys take your guesses, but Shipley is a good guy deserving of another shot.
The answer is that Andrew Hawkins has effectively pushed him off the roster. He replaced him in the slot last season and, along with the sure hands, also is a top special teamer. The 6th receiver they'll likely keep is Binns. Another big body who actually seems to be able to hold onto the ball...at least enough to probably merit a roster spot.
So, I wouldn't call it stacked at receiver, but Shipley gets replaced by a dual-role guy and the last slot gets taken by a guy who can potentially stretch the field opposite Green...or at the very least spell Green for a few plays.
There may yet be some medical related issues regarding Shipley, but he's been skirting the cut line since Spring camps just due to his specialization. The only thing I'm reasonably certain of is that some team out there is about to get themselves a sure-handed third down slot receiver. There's little doubt he can make somebody's roster in this league.

I don't think Shipley is what we're looking for since we have Travis Benjamin and Norwood. I just don't see why we'd take Shippley (and effectively cut Norwood), when Shipley has been hurt and hasn't played in our offense.
I'm looking for a burner who's healthy, and I think Shipley is more of a pure slot quick guy

Welcome to the board.
If Shipley is fully healthy, he isn't a guy that gets cut, not after what he showed his rookie season. He's on his way out because he isn't in a place where he can be counted on physically.

He's small(ish) and he's hurt. That equals being cut.
Browns don't need him and won't go after him, IMO.

Shipley was also injured last year with ACL surgery.. the reports are that he "lost his burst," could no longer accelerate and cut. He could run.. catch.. but could not separate. So he became very average.. no longer the player he was in his rookie year...

I have had both my ACL's reconstructed. Rehab is 6-9 months.
Playing and being somewhat normal = 1 year.
Get your quickness and ups mostly back will take 2 years. You never really get fully recovered to what you were pre-op. But it generally takes a good 1 1/2 years to 2 years to get that starting and stopping quickness back.

That's probably a kindness to him. He got a lot of chances in our 2 pre-season games, and did a very good job. He got a lot of tape, and a team can pick him up now instead of waiting till the last second when he might get lost in the massive release of the final cutdowns.

That's something that needed to happen but its kind of a bummer. The kid is a pretty good kicker.
Hopefully him being waived now will give him a chance to be picked up somewhere else. That would be very big for him.

I agree while Im not shocked about the cut I thought we would still keep him until after this next game.

Well, it's nice to cut him now to catch on somewhere else but it's also stupid if that is the only reason....what if something unforseen happens to Dawson the next week(s)? If he was a good kicker you keep him around until final cuts are made to make sure your starting K is 100%...but I understand that this is probably common to treat your 2nd camp K that way

hopefully he catches on somewhere. There are enough bad kickers in the league, Wolfert should be able to push someone off a roster

I don't think I would want a kicker taking a practice squad slot.

Bills turn the lights out on Shawne Merriman Posted by Michael David Smith on August 20, 2012, 10:43 AM EDT Shawne+Merriman+Philadelphia+Eagles+v+Buffalo+4O798l2tJvql Getty Images Shawne Merriman is done in Buffalo. Sweet. Always hated Merriman, and I don't hate very many players. He was a product of steroids and I don't like to see people rewarded for ill-gotten gains.

I think so too. We all knew that he didn't have a chance to beat out Dawson. It would have been less kind to wait until the cut downs come along. He has some talent and should catch on with some team I'm thinking.

Shawne Merriman is done in Buffalo.

Sounds about right. They got productivity out of Aaron Maybin, may be they'll do the same with Merrimen.
The only thing is that Merrimen really has never achieved anywhere near what achieved while he was on Roids. And the steroids were probably the reason for so many injuries (inflexibility and bulk muscle).
But, I bet the Jets take a shot on the guy

Everyone believes this but the steroids were not the reason he declined it's revisionist history. He got caught in 2006 and still had 17 sacks in 12 games (because of the suspension causing him to miss the first 4 games) then had 12.5 in 15 games in 2007 the reason he fell off was the knee injury not getting off steriods but people will keep saying it's the steroids even though that is not true. He hurt his knee, rushed back, hurt it again, and has never been the same.

He hurt it again because he didn't use steroids to aid his healing.
