I was watching a story on ESPN about Nick Toon and his dad and it made me realize I hadn't seen much of him this preseaon - didn't realize that he had been hurt all pre-season.

The Saints seem to be pretty stacked at WR but I can't imagine that this kid wouldn't make the 53 man roster.... if he doesn't I'd pick him up in a second... I HATED this guy at Wisconsin... but it's because he always seemed to come up with the big catch when needed... has a ton of talent and seems to have a good drive. Will be interesting to see what the Saints do with him. He didn't play last night against the Texans...

http://www.rantsports.com/new-orleans-sa...-saints-roster/

New Orleans Saints rookie Nick Toon has been injured for the entire preseason thus far as he has been battling a foot injury. Toon is doubtful for the Saints’ next preseason game against the Houston Texans on Saturday, August 25th. With Toon not seeing any preseason action so far it’s among many NFL rumors sparking that Toon might not even make the Saints’ 53-man roster.

Toon sustained a foot injury during practice on August 2nd, and Toon described it as a “tweak” at the time. However, Toon’s injury seems more serious than a “tweak” since he has missed the past three weeks. The question is, without any preseason experience, will Toon make the roster?

I honestly think that despite his injury, Toon’s roster spot is safe. Toon was the Saints’ fourth round selection and they seem to be invested in him. Toon has drawn comparisons to teammate and fellow wide receiver Marques Colston. It is evident that the Saints drafted Toon to be the wide receiver of the future and the successor to Colston. Furthermore, Toon has a good pedigree as his father Al Toon played in the NFL.

The Saints claim that Toon will be back sometime this week but he will likely not play in the next preseason game. I would like to see Toon play at least one preseason game just to see what he can do. Toon has great size (6’4″ 218 pounds) and runs routes well but I still think he needs to earn his stripes with the Saints.

Before the foot injury, Toon was considered one of the favorites to claim the number four receiver position but his injury has been a big setback. However, the competition is still going on and with injuries to wide receiver Adrian Arrington and Andy Tanner the number four receiver is still up for grabs. If Toon can come back in the Saints’ final preseason game against the Tennessee Titans he could have a chance to claim the number four spot.

Toon would have to bring his A-game when he returns if he wants the number four spot as he will need to get up to speed with the other receivers on the Saints’ roster. The entire time Toon has been injured he has been on the sidelines taking “mental reps” as he prepares to come back from injury. I think we will see Toon this season and I hope his foot injury will not hinder him in his rookie season.

Toon is a promising player and I think the Saints got another late round steal. Toon just needs to stay healthy and I am sure he will be another great young star for the Saints.

Edit: article is a few days old, but still interesting... I agree with the writer though that I can't imagine he wouldn't make their roster... but, like I said, they have a ton of WR talent right now.

The Bengals and Bucs both lost starting Gs...the Jets lost a starting OT. The Chargers McNeil retired.

We need a backup OT and maybe a starting G...at least another backup.

I'm not too optimistic that we will be able to find OL help off the waiver wire. We may be forced to trade if we think that area needs an upgrade.

How so? Seeing as how he tried to come back and then retired, we would still be in our current situation.

No surprises. The only one could be Davis. Knew he wouldn't make the team, but thought he'd make it til final cuts. The rest were pretty much as expected.

finally, the mitchell experiment is over.

Too bad really,, size, physicality.. wonder what the problem was.. Seemed to be able to catch when given an opportunity..

some WR's have all the physical attributes to play. But if they don't have it between the ears, you get waived.
Mitchell got by on his speed and size at South Florida. Probally ran a limited route tree. I'm sure the size of a NFL playbook overwhelmed him.
Steve Largent he was not between the ears.
welcome to the CFL, Carlton Mitchell

Mitchell's problem, from all accounts, was that he couldn;t figure out what to do on the field without someone telling him exactly what each play/route was. He never learned his playbook, and could never grasp routes and adjustments to coverages.

well, if that was the problem, then you have to wonder why it took this long to dump him. But maybe they kept hoping the light would go on at some point.

Oh well, anyway,, done with him.

Yep.

There were several reports earlier in camp about coaches and other players ..... even rookies ..... having to tell Mitchell where to line up.

I don't think that it was a matter of not trying ..... because the kid bought himself a Juggs machine and used to practice hands catching for hours on end. Unfortunately he never managed to figure out a playbook.

Here's a shocker for first round cuts:

The Baltimore Ravens released former Pro Bowl kicker Billy Cundiff Sunday morning, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Cundiff made 28 of his 37 attempts last season but missed a 32-yard attempt in the final minute of the AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots that would have tied the game.

He has been in a competition with undrafted rookie Justin Tucker, who did all the kicking in Baltimore's last preseason game Thursday night and was successful on a 53-yard field goal attempt.

Cundiff on Thursday said he was "shocked" when told of the team's decision the night before the game but refused to read too much into being sat down for the entire game. Reciting his statistics over the past two seasons -- making 90 percent of his kicks inside the 50-yard line, going 12 of 13 in the playoffs and recording the most touchbacks over that span -- Cundiff said his track record should speak for itself. ESPN

He was here for several weeks during the 09 season when Dawson was injured. He made the game winning field goal during the infamous first win against Buffalo that year.

someone will likely pick him up - overally a pretty good kicker...

I too am happy we're done with Mitchell - seemed like a kid with a world of talent that just never caught on. Maybe he'll get another chance somewhere else down the line.

Cundiff kicked the game winner in 2009 against buffalo. The Browns won this game with two completions, tying an all time NFL record low. (not the snow game)

The Ravens were the 9th team Cundiff has signed with.

Sorry to see Emanuel Davis and Bert Reed go so quickly. Says something about the competition at DB & WR though. Windsor & Sims... Cut or stick?

Well, that was quick. I saw it coming after the drops.

Mitchell should try out for the Jets. If they keep Tebow, he is the perfect receiver for them. He is a beast of a blocker, routes dont matter, just freelance and run deep.

So Whatever happened to Rod Windsor?

Is he still on the team and if so, What is his role?

He must be doing something nobody else can do. I just wonder what it is.

I treasure each one of his catches. Glad we went a fresh direction. But overall, no real surprises. Will we be shopping in the cuts market? Like a tackle for OL. Can't be too much there I suspect.

Yes he is still on the team for now, but I will be surprised if he is still on the roster opening day.

He's still on the roster....Not sure what you mean about being able to do what nobody else can do ?...

Maybe hold onto the ball..run a decent route..or be an adviser on how to play arena league ball...don't know...

maybe a special teams position..

I can't believe we'd cut a player with a 75% career reception percentage. He only dropped one ball in the last two seasons and 50% of the time his receptions went for first downs.

What more does a guy have to do to prove himself?

Okay, maybe all of that should have been purple.

Taking the whole in purple, maybe that is a good sign and we are getting better.

Seeing as how I'm not enamored with our guards and would like a veteran backup with some cred to his name, I've noticed that the Seahawks have released Deuce Lutui. He never became this great guard that the Cardinals thought they were getting when they got him in the 2nd round, but he'd represent some nice insurance.

Yeah, I know...dream on, 'Toad...

From what I have read, he was cut in favor of a kid who was drafted as a DE, then moved to Guard in training camp ...... this after he seemed to be a shoe in for the spot after the starter was injured ........ plus he has had a history of not making weight.

Arizona allowed a lot of sacks in the past 2 years. Is that on the line, or on the QBs? Is it a combination of the 2? How much has he been a factor in that?

I really haven't paid much attention to him, but for a team to give up on a veteran guy in favor of a rookie learning a completely new position is kinda scary.

Plus, can he play anything but Guard? That's kinda important for a backup OL.

Toad/Ytown - I was thinking the same things when I went to bed last night.

Deuce is a big name but what is going on that he couldn't even make it with the CArds given how pitiful their line has been. Only thing Y. I don't think he would be a backup here. If we signed him he would either take the starting role or get released,

How old is he? He might not fit into our youth movement.

That's one bust that definitely surprised me since he was such a beast at USC.

Then again, that whole team was a surprising bust of draft picks.
