Another post got me to thinking about all of the jobs I have had over the years and wondered who else had really bad ones. The hardest dirtiest job I ever had was vacuuming lime dust off the top of cranes in a steel mill. We had to climb up 100 feet to the top of the cranes dragging 6 inch vac hoses and work in 120 degree heat all the while tethered by dubious ( IMHO ) harnesses . When I was 16 I got a job at the dirty bird cleaning all the beef processing equipment, the stuff that grounds up the beef and cuts the meat. It was disgusting. I lasted about 5 days and because the guy was being a jerk, I screwed him by just not showing up. Poor taste I know, but he deserved it. It was right at Thanksgiving too, ha.

I've had more grueling jobs, but none that I wanted to go to less than that job and I was only there a week.

I've been pretty fortunate. Even in high school, I always had jobs I didn't hate.

I did have a job detailing cars for about 3 months. That was probably the worst.

I'm a big dude. Those are small cars I had to get into

I once worked for a carpet cleaning company, went to clean a house on the east side of Youngstown, had a gun pulled out on me by the homeowner because we "broke" his dresser. While he sat in the house gun tucked in his pants smoking weed the YPD came, talked to his girlfriend and then left--he never talked to us (my partner and me were upstairs poopin' our pants)

Since I had a newborn at home, I came to the conclusion carpets can stay dirty and quit that day.

My first job, when I was 13, was drying cars by hand coming out of the Bee-Clean Car Wash in Lakewood. It sucked.

In high school, I was a student custodian at Lakewood High. When all the other kids were hanging out and talking and stuff in the halls after school, I was pushing a dust mop for $3.35/hr. - it didn't help the social standing as much as you might think, lol. I also had to clean up some seriously disgusting things from time to time.

When I got out of the Navy, I briefly - for less than 24 hours - worked as a security guard at a hospital. It wasn't bad, but it was just TOO BORING and reminded me way too much of standing watch for a living.

Since then, pretty much every job has been enjoyable in one way or another - thankfully.

Worked in a cabinet making factory for a month. My job was to stand in between 2 planer machines, I'd grab the board when it came out of one planer, flip it over and put it into the other planer. That wasn't the worst part, the constant work was okay, but when one of the machines was t working I would have to grab a broom and sweep up til the machines were fixed. I was a temp guy so they used me up, the hard part was watching all the permanent workers sit and watch me work. Maybe it was bad for me because I only made $4.95/hr. When the state called to go take there drug test I never showed up again, didn't even pick up my final check.

And you know . . . had you not pushed that mop you have to think would you be who you are today and where you are today? Those kids in high school may have looked at you squirrely but today they may be pushing mops right now, you know?

I think about that day I had the gun pulled out on me from time to time and while cleaning carpets is a great way to make a buck I have learned there are better more important things than asking someone "You want Scotchguard?"

Quick list of my jobs - from age 16 on.

-gopher/clean up guy at an equipment rental place.
-in college - delivering pizza.
-in college - working 10 to 30 hours a week in a wood furn. factory.
-out of college - selling/designing kitchens - cabinets, counter tops
-computer training. (me? REally???)
-selling cars
-part owner of a dealership.
-current job.

Can't say I've "hated" any of them. In fact, I look back fondly at most of them - other than the car deal. While selling cars, I had a tough time with the boss - till I finally showed him, on paper, from his OWN (store's) computer program that not only was I the top salesperson, I also grossed more per sale than the others. While he doubted me at first.........the boss amazingly started treating me differently when he realized it was fact.

I guess I've been lucky. I've learned a lot from all of my jobs. Biggest thing I've learned? Work ethic. Some have it, most don't. And work ethic WILL take you places. Just my experience.

I've always thought delivering pizzas would be a 'fun' part time job.

I don't know why, I just feel like I'd enjoy it lol.

When I was high-school I wound up getting a job at a restaurant in a tiny town. I was expecting the job to be a busser and to clean tables, sweet floors, etc. On my first day there, they asked me to clean a few things. On the list was a spitoon filled with used chewing tobacco and tobacco spit. I absolutely refused to clean that stuff out because it reeked and was honestly disgusting. At the end of the shift, I informed my boss that I would not be coming back the next day and never went back again.

This decision, however, led me to getting my favorite job as a student: working at a winter sporting goods store selling skis/snowboards/etc. which I absolutely loved.

For me, it was fun. Plus, I made pretty decent money for working only 15-20 hours a week. (pretty decent, considering it was 20 some years ago).

I absolutely loved delivering pizzas. I could often put $100 or more in my pocket working an 8 hour shift, plus I also got my paycheck. For the mid 1980's, that wasn't bad. I also got invited to so many parties it was almost disgusting. The cute girls who would answer the door wearing almost nothing were quite a perk too.

I was a pizza delivery guy for a couple years while in college. I loved that job. Had my iPod on, listening to music and made about $12-15 per hour (upwards of $20/hr on weekends) and it was the easiest thing in the world. I'd recommend it to anyone in college that wants to make easy money.

I delivered pizzas.. it was a nice gig. Ytown hit it on the head, I got invited to parties, got to be out on my own listening to music (sorry, no iPod in 1991 ). Made good money, always got the shift meal pizza... oddly enough I never got tired of free pizza.

Two downsides, you run the crap out of your car and you can't get the pizza smell out. The other is that when the weather is the crappiest, cold, snowing, raining.. that's when people order the most pizzas so you are out in it for hours.... some people give you a bigger tip because they realize what they are putting you through but a lot don't... similarly, when big football games are on or the final 4, those are also your busiest times, especially if you work in a college town so you often miss the best sporting events if you want to make the most money.

My first job was my worst job. I picked tomatoes between Prattville and Selma, Alabama when I was 15. My Granddaddy who farmed mostly cotton had a friend with about 25 greenhouses who grew tomatoes. Since cotton picking time is in the fall when I was back in Ohio, he saw to it I had a job waiting since tomatoes in a house are picked all times of the year.

A hot house, in south Alabama, in July and August is a pretty unfriendly environment.

What I learned...you pick them as soon as there is a HINT of red in them...that and rig up some sort of knee pads.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

Walmart hands down. As the management was really awful. They were like a bunch of thugs working for them. Don't let those so-called family commercials of friendly people fool you!

Wow, some of you had it rough.. Guess in my life I've been blessed.

my worst was washing dishes at the Iron Gate restaurant Westlake (1990ish). even then I didn't mind it, I liked my co-workers, the chef made me ANYTHING I wanted for dinner, and the shakes at the little shop next door were to die for. And it was a second of 3 jobs I was holding at the time.

My worst job was the one where the paychecks bounced, not once, not twice but three times!

The first time, I was on my break at work and by happenstance, I went to do some personal banking on the computer. I noticed that the deposit of my paycheck went in and then came out a few days later. I was more fortunate than most. One guy had around 30 checks or so that he had written, that bounced BECAUSE of the payroll bouncing. He had a lot of bounced check charges which the owner had to cover. After that, on paydays, it became a race to the bank.

Then, my bank started to refuse to take his check and suggested that I go to his bank, cash the check, then come back and make my deposit.

The third time, his own bank refused. I told him, in a screaming match in his office, that he would have to pay me in cash at the end of every day. He didn't like my attitude. I told him that I don't work for free. Needless to say, I wasn't employed there much longer.

I would like to say the steel barrel company I worked in for almost 8 years. The hours were crazy, we had no scheduled quitting time, and the owner reminded me of Mr Burns from The Simpsons, and that atmosphere trickled down through management to the employees. It was hot and boring work. But I can't say that one because the money and benefits were pretty good and I was able to provide for the family pretty well with that job.

So I would say my two worst jobs were as a dish washer at Kenny Kingz and at a aluminum foundry.

I worked for this guy who had bought an old Mr Steak location, and turned it into a different restaurant. I had 2 checks bounce before I decided that it was time to move on.

KFC the job lasted one day and the manager made a crack about fooling around with my wife. I decked the guy and walked out. Three months later the jerk went to jail for stealing money from the company Other than that I liked my other jobs as a coal miner, in Insurance sales, and the last 28 + years in the car business.

Some intesting comments on the subject here, but I think I can top most of the above.

I did my best Fred Flintstones impersonation when I was very young and worked at Sidley's bagging rocks and play sand [silica] for about 5 weeks (in the winter), before a better oppritunaty came along.

Then there was an occasion when I was a boom truck (pump with boom) operator and had to poor a suspended slab in side a plant in SC that processed turkey blood and guts to extract the wax from the blood to use as a base for lip sticks and such for beauty aids.

After a walk threw to show me the poor and the smell ... I made a decision to perform an unorthodox set up by extending my out riggers and boom straight out in front of the truck without lowering my pads and drove the boom threw an overhead door, so that I would not have to run my system pipe and pump the poor from within the building (they though I was nuts for attempting such a risky move). I was still green and puked more times then I care to remember, but there was no way I would have wanted to be inside that building for longer then I could hold my breath.

But none top picking up and looking for burnt body parts (Marine Barracks in Lebanon '83') and searching for dead Marine pilots after we first received the then new Harrier Jump Jet. We had a lot of teething problems acclimating pilots to that plane in part due to a lack of a true trainer aircraft.

Crack whore.

Nah, probably a dishwasher at a few restaurants. I was sweaty, wet, soapy, covered in greese and food. And it stunk.

I never had a truly "terrible" job, but I did have jobs that I just plain didn't like.

I worked at Gabriel Brothers for one day in college. They had me working in the back stocking stuff and pricing stuff. I loved it because for 5 hours, I was by myself, taking my time. It was a very easy job. I had another job at the time, too, so this was more just a "get some more money" job.

Well, after my first day, the manager comes up and says "hey, you did a really nice job. Tomorrow we're going to put you on a cash register." I am not a patient person, and I knew that I wasn't going to like dealing with the people who shop at Gabe's. So, I just never went back.

I did try to call to quit, but Gabriel's in Kent had no phone number. So, I couldn't even do that.

Right out of law school I got a job as a lawyer with a pretty good firm in Cleveland. However, for whatever reason, I just had a big personality conflict with the managing partner. I usually get along with just about everyone, but for me and him, it was like fire and ice. I still get knots in my stomach thinking about how I would feel in the morning when I'd get up for work. I hated it hated it hated it.

Lasted 6 months before my current job came along out of the blue.

Other than that, though, I've liked my jobs. Was a busboy at Bob Evans in high school, which was easy and I got a ton of sausage gravy.

In college I drove a bus, which was great.

I also worked on a concrete crew as a laborer. There were times when it really sucked, but I never minded the hard work.

Ok you don't like dealing with people, so you goto law school. Which apparently taught you how to deal with people since afterward you usually got along with everybody?

There's so many crappy jobs out there. I've had a couple I guess... and they pulled me threw college when I'd think about doing them the rest of my life. I only list the pre-college jobs as the post at least paid well and I've primarily only had one... and if your getting paid well then it can't be too crappy.

- fast food grease boy (probably my worst)
- refrigerator repair warehouse guy
- hardware store clerk
- furniture delivery boy
- factory worker on drill press
- moving company truck hand
- computer sales guy
- deli boy
- wrestling summer camp helper
- hockey referee
- waited tables at small family joint
- cooked at a steak joint
- construction laborer
- movie and game rental boy

And to be honest I'm not sure that's all I worked pre-college. I quit more jobs then I can remember during those days. But there was always some other flunky job to make money at.

Worst job for me was being an attorney at a litigation firm in Cincinnati. No time for family or myself. I was a billable hours machine who was treated worse than dirt. I know it varies from firm to firm, but this was by far the worst.

I quit that job 2 years ago. Turnover there is so bad, I could walk the halls right now and not know one of their associate attorneys.
