Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, died Saturday, weeks after heart surgery and days after his 82nd birthday.
Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the moon on July 20, 1969, and he radioed back to Earth the historic news of "one giant leap for mankind." He spent nearly three hours walking on the moon with fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin.
Armstrong and hiw wife, Carol, married in 1999, made their home in the Cincinnati suburb of Indian Hill, but he had largely stayed out of public view in recent years.
He spoke at Ohio State University during a February event honoring fellow astronaut John Glenn and the 50th anniversary of Glenn becoming the first American to orbit the Earth. In May, Armstrong joined Gene Cernan, the last man to walk on the moon, at Pensacola Naval Air Station in Florida to support the opening of The National Flight Academy, which aims to teach math and science to kids through an aviation-oriented camp.

I recommend everyone to watch When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions. It's on Netflix and it tells the story of NASA, Armstrong, and many other astronauts.
Not many words can sum up how I feel about the passing of Armstrong. I know he'll be greatly missed but his legacy will live on forever.

In addition to being a great American hero, this guy (and all the early astronauts) had some stones on them. To venture somewhere like outer space with no book of experience to draw from.
RIP Mr. Armstrong

It just struck me watching that, we don't get moments like that anymore. Where the whole country comes together with awe and excitement. I was a young kid when that happened and remember watching that with my parents. I sent that clip to my dad just now and he wrote me back immediately thanking me and telling me how much he enjoyed it. I'm glad I grew up when I did.
RIP Mr. Armstrong.

RIP Mr. Armstrong.
You inspired a generation to dream of the possibilities.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.
John 14:19 Jesus said: Because I live, you also will live.

Indeed Jules. That summer I was ready to start the 5th grade. I'd fallen asleep and my step dad woke me and sibs up and hauled us infront of a black and white in the den and I watched Mr. Armstrong take that hop onto the moon.
I was enthralled and beyond facinated. The folks knew better than to try to get me to go back to bed. Thats all we talked about for weeks. What a memory.

Well said. I wish I had my Mom or Dad to send that to...we watched as well, be it apart.
Hell Yeah......R.I.P Neil.
It's too bad all counties have been named and they don't change from time to time. Armstrong county isn't out of the question IMO.

'Blue moon' on same day as Neil Armstrong service By SETH BORENSTEIN The Associated Press WASHINGTON — There's a rare 'blue moon' on Friday, a fitting wink to Neil Armstrong by the cosmic calendar. That's the day of a private service for Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, who died last Saturday in Ohio at age 82. A blue moon occurs when there's a second full moon in one calendar month. It won't happen again until July 2015. The full moon cycle is 29.5 days so a blue moon is uncommon and has come to mean something rare. The moon actually won't be colored blue. Harvard University astronomer Avi Loeb said the moon is far more important to lovers, literature and folklore than to science. Armstrong's family has suggested paying tribute to him by looking at the moon and giving the astronaut a wink. Copyright The Associated Press web page

My houseguest and I just walked outside and winked at the moon. What a remarkable achievement by NASA and Mr Armstrong.
