Quote:

Gabriela Saucedo Mercer hasn’t even won the Republican primary for Congress in Arizona yet, but she is already facing attacks from the Democratic Congressman she is hoping to unseat in November over some incendiary comments she made in the past about Middle Eastern immigrants.

In an interview with a conservative website earlier this year, Saucedo Mercer talked in depth about her views on immigration. A Mexican immigrant herself who became a U.S. citizen, she said the issue was important because people from places other than Mexico were among those coming across the border illegally.

“That includes Chinese, Middle Easterners,” she said. “If you know Middle Easterners, a lot of them, they look Mexican or they look, you know, like a lot of people in South America, dark skin, dark hair, brown eyes. And they mix. They mix in.

“And those people, their only goal in life is to, to cause harm to the United States. So why do we want them here, either legally or illegally? When they come across the border, besides the trash that they leave behind, the drug smuggling, the killings, the beheadings. I mean, you are seeing stuff. It’s a war out there.”

Saucedo Mercer was facing fellow Republican Jaime Vasquez in Tuesday’s primary in Arizona’s 3rd congressional district, with the results due later tonight. But her supporters and opponents both clearly expect her to win.

She has been endorsed by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R), who is scheduled to attend a fundraiser for Saucedo Mercer on Sept. 12 in Tucson, Ariz. She was also facing attacks from the campaign of Rep. Raul Grijalva, the Democrat she is trying to unseat.

Before the primary polls even closed, Grijalva’s campaign posted a video to YouTube highlighting Mercer’s comments. It was titled “The Real Gabriela Mercer - We Don’t Want Middle Easterners” and dated on Monday.

Saucedo Mercer gave the interview originally to a conservative website called Western Free Press, but it went almost unnoticed until now. On Tuesday afternoon, it had only 215 views on YouTube.

Still, she has been a favorite in some Republican circles. On her website, she boasts of numerous endorsements, including from retired Lt. Gen. William Boykin, known for his anti-Muslim views, as well as Arizona’s Secretary of State Ken Bennett (R), who apologized for embarrassing the state earlier this year after he threatened to keep Barack Obama off the November ballot if the president couldn’t prove he was really born in the United States.

Saucedo Mercer’s Facebook page shows her posing for photos next to former presidential candidate Herman Cain as well as presumptive Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan.

In the interview, Saucedo Mercer also commented on the religious affiliations of some of some immigrants who were crossing the border illegally. She said evidence of Muslims crossing the border were found in the desert in Arizona.

“They have found prayer rugs. They have found copies of the Quran,” she said. “So that tells you this is not just poor illegals who are trying to come to this country and find work. It’s bigger than that.”

Saucedo Mercer’s campaign did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

The quoted comments don't match "We don't want middle easterners in our country" at all. What she is saying is that there are middle easterners who are using their similar color tones to cross the border with central and south americans illegally without revealing their identities. She's suggesting that they're doing that to do harm to America.

I don't know that she has data to support those claims, though they are believable, but it doesn't mean she doesn't want any "middle easterners in our country."

Then why would she say "legally or illegally"? She's not just talking about illegal immigration.

very possible that she is a complete idiot.

but, is there a big chunk missing between the first and second quotes?

the first paragraph looks like it is talking about how Middle Eastern Muslims can get into the country illegally just as the Mexican and South American illegal immigrants do.

the second paragraph looks like it is specifically talking about the Mexican drug rings that are infiltrating AZ pretty heavily the past few years and has been a constant political talking point in that time (and where the illegally or legally comment would properly reside - in that we don't want drug rings in our country). Not sure how anyone could say those were Muslim generated.

my cynical side is thinking that it took 2 quotes out of context and put them together to make it sound worse than it really was.

This is the quote.... “And those people, their only goal in life is to, to cause harm to the United States. So why do we want them here, either legally or illegally?

Now "those people" is pretty vague as to whether she is talking about all middle easterners or just those who wish to do harm to our country... but if somebody wants to do harm to our country, why WOULD we want them here, legally or illegally?

I reserve the right to say that shes nuts if it turns out that way, but it looks like she was trying to discuss about 3 different things at the same time and nothing came out very clear...

Could very easily have been a discussion of immigration amnesty.

Maybe an amnesty question:

Huffington Post has it listed as a single continuous quote though:

Wait, you're saying a respectable site like muckraker.talkingpoints would try to pull a Michael Moore on somebody's quotes like that?

I can't view the video from work (youtube is blocked) but here's a video of an interview with her. Is this the one referenced?

That's why I started it at the 7 minute mark where the question is asked, so you only have to sit through 1 minute.

I do it as a service.

ok, nevermind my comment above. she apparently does attribute the drug smuggling and beheadings to the muslim/middle easterners. crazy.

(note: the Chinese comment was completely separate as just a listing of who comes across the border. more apparent from the video than the text)

I think it may have just been a disembodied thought about the actual drug smugglers that are more likely to be down south that are most likely not Middle Easterner that got lumped into the end of that sentence as that is an issue at the border as well and some smugglers are here legally as well as illegally.

Given that Afghanistan is a major production spot for growing poppies, is it really unbelievable that they might try to make their way across the southern border?

I honestly have no idea if indeed this happens, so I am just asking. Does Afghan opium make its way across the Mexican border? If so, do Afghans smuggle it themselves, or do they rely upon Mexican traffickers?

According to the Army, (On page 4 of the report) 31% of illegal immigration (in 2006) was non-Mexican illegal immigrants.

Im not sure how my statement can confuse you. I'll type it slower.

I do not want people in this country who's only desire is to kill people (of any religion or race) and destroy the United States.

Should I now assume you do?

First, I'm not sure that is what the representative said or meant... as I said before, it sounds as if she had 3 or 4 thoughts in her head about terrorists, illegal immigration, drug smuggling... and got them all jumbled together when she tried to answer the question.

If you are certain she is saying all middle easterners are terrorists, then that is something you inferred on your own from what she said.

I haven't knocked her for the very reasons you state. I really don't know what she was really trying to say. it was a gummed up mess.

Even if taken out of context, her comments are at best prejudicial and at worst completely bigoted.

How can this person even be in the running for political office?

AS you can in virtually any western style democracy. I just have problems understanding why anyone would want someone like this representing them as the article quotes her as being the front runner.

Not sure what the rolling eyes is for Arps. Our immigration laws have actually tightened alot over the last decade. They actually probably need to be loosened a bit due to anticipated labour shortage over the next few years.

For this politican in particular, there are ways to make strong points on illegal immigration without racial or religious stereotyping. I don;t disagree that the US needs stronger immigration enforcement.
