How about this hypothetical ... Weeden is hurt 1/3 through the year and misses the rest ... We end up 3-13 with the #1 pick ... Still draft Barkley/Another QB?

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

No...Weeden still would not of have had enough time to grow or show if he is capable of doing so..

how bout this.... Weeden and TR decided three games in that they don't want to play football anymore... but it's ok because Colt and Hardesty actually play really well and we win 15 games... but we lose the first game of the playoffs and end up with a late round draft pick... but we trade the entire draft to get the #1 overall draft pick... now the real question is.... do we draft a kicker to replace Dawson?? I think we do...

ok... enough of this silliness... and let's worry about who we are drafting once the season has actually be played...

Not a bad question although some dont like to think about things like this so early in the season some posters have pretty much nailed it down when reading the collective whole.

1- If Weeden Does good - we wont be picking that high
2 - if Weeden does at least as much as McCoy last year we wont be picking that high
3- If Weeden gets hurt and McCoy doesnt do well we may be picking high enough to entertain the thought.
4- If Weeden looks like crap then again it could be a possability.

I guess the bottom line is we have a low first round pick QB and a 3rd round backup. We should know more in 17 weeks for sure but if we are picking at #1 or #2 overall I could see us seriously looking to take a QB or as others have stated moving down for a truckload of picks.

If you need 3 years to be a winner you got here 2 years to early. Get it done Browns.

Quarterbacks like Andrew Luck you just don't pass on. I don't think Barkley is quite to that level. There are some questions about arm strength. A lot of that would depend on what Weeden showed in 16 games, and what else is there to draft. If there is a top tier pass rusher, I'd go with him, and just cross my fingers Weeden picks it up in the next year.

Without an Andrew Luck type in 2013, Weeden would have to tank bad for me to consider another QB, if I were running team that is.

If Weeden shows growth, no way we draft another qb #1 overall.
If Weeden lookes like Jimmy the pickle Clausen, Derek dumb ass Anderson, or Spurgen Wynn, hell yeah we better be finding someone ASAP.

If Weeden looks like he can be the guy, then our draft will actually be pretty wide open. We'll probably want an edge rusher or a linebacker.

Well, if we are QB hunting again next year, i hope it's not Barkley. I used to be impressed with the guy- came in as a freshman and took over the usc program. But, his arm strength has not improved. I watched him yesterday against Syracuse, he has a noodle arm. Way worse then Colt- and Colt gets ripped for his arm even though it actually looks a bit better this year. No, if we need a qb- we need to look elsewhere.

Here is to hoping our 29 year old rookie can find the fountain of youth and actually look like a qb, he doesn't have the luxury of time and a learning curve.

What if Weeden gets hurts or stinks and McCoy comes in and lights it up?

Happy birthday, but you didn't answer the question,, what if Weeden sucks and McCoy comes in and lights it up?

Well, now we've seen what Weeden can do. With decent protection, he had maybe the worst game I've ever seen a Browns quarterback play. If we'd have switched to McCoy for the second half, we'd be 1-0. God, he was awful.
Maybe he gets better. But it is pretty hard to see the 28-year-old guy I watched today ever being a stud. Looks to me like a wasted first-round pick. We could've waited and grabbed Nick Foles or Russell Wilson.

I'd urge you not to lose sight of the question of the thread: If Weeden improves but we still pick #1 do we take Barkley?

After 5 turnovers, two EASY TD's that he missed and a rating somewhere around the Christmas-time temperature of the North Pole as measured in Celcius, well, Weeden has no choice but to improve.

Yea its still too early but it does open up the question, improve from WHERE... to WHERE... If all he has to do toward the end of the season is look better then that... then as long as he's not in a coma, that should be pretty easy.

As an aside, I really think Shurmur did Weeden a disservice with how little playing time he was given in the pre-season. Weeden is s rookie Qb taking over a completely different, much more complex play calling system and moving from all shotgun to all under center.

If Weeden's psyche can handle the boos and criticism and Shurmur sticks with him then he will show improvement. Of course the question is how much?

Start strengthening your arm for the wind of the lake Matt Barkley! Maybe we can hire Lane Kiffin to go with him.

Thanks

Esp considering that if McCoy comes in and lights it up (what I was replying to) we will be picking much higher then 1st or 2nd which is what makes the question moot.

Ah, that wasn't very clear to begin with.

I don't know that he would light it up, but he could keep us in games and help the defense win them. Right now, I have my doubts that Weeden can do even that.

If we're picking #1 overall, I'd be stunned if we passed on a QB with a new owner. Picking #1 overall means Weeden was bad enough to get us there and teams just don't pass on QBs at #1. It's only happened 2 times in the past 10 years and only 4 teams passed:

2006
- Houston (David Carr) - Traded multiple picks for Matt Schaub in 2007
- New Orleans (Had just signed Drew Brees)

2008
- Miami (Chad Pennington) - Took Chad Henne instead, took Tannehill in 2012
- St. Louis Rams - Had just signed Bulger to $60M+ contract in 2007, took Bradford in 2010

Teams picking #1 that don't have a franchise QB either take one or end up taking one down the road and almost all of the time, they take one (regardless of if there's a Luck there or not). I doubt we'll be any different. Don't doubt for a second that Haslam will pull a "Clausen" on Weeden if he doesn't show much of anything this year.

If we're picking 1st, I hope we don't take Barkley. That would seem to be a monumental reach.

BPA or trade down. We don't have a second rounder next year, as of now.

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

Holmgren's original plan was to have Delhomme start and be so bad that we would get the 1st pick. Delhomme got hurt, so he couldn't play. And Luck stayed in school.

The new plan is to start Weeden the whole season and have him be terrible then we get the 1st pick. Unfortunately Luck is no longer available.

Holmgren is actually a genius whose plans have gone awry.
