Forgiveness is a funny thing. When you really break it down, it makes no sense for us (in this case, the fans that were affected by Art's choices) to hold on to anger for him. What purpose does it serve us? Seriously, what good does it do to be angry with him all these years later? He did what he did and it's over. It's been over for a very long time. It was over the day after it happened. Holding on to those emotions isn't healthy.
We don't have to LIKE him. We don't have to RESPECT him. But we should be able to let go for our own sanity. I don't care about him either way....he did some great things for football and some not so great things. Those were his choices. I can either move on with my life or not.
I'm willing to bet that Art was never at peace with his choices. I'm sure he was haunted since the day he up and moved. That's enough for me. He doesn't deserve to steal my energy and emotions. Why give him yours?
Funny things, when I read your post, I thought of "karma" I mean, could it be that by holding on to the hatred of Modell is now somehow cosmically holding us back?
Just kinda thinking outloud..

I think it was in yesterday's Toledo Blade paper........Dave Hackenberg - sports writer - made mention of the first game when the Browns played Baltimore, in Baltimore. He saw Modell, Modell recognized him. Said "you're from Toledo, right? Lots of Browns fans in the Toledo area. I hope they all know how........", and then he quit talking, put his head down, and walked away.
Doesn't change how we all felt and maybe still feel - but Hackenberg was certain Modell was going to say " .....how sorry I am."
It was what it was - Browns left, now they're back. I don't hate the guy - although I did for a while. By the same token, I don't grieve over his death or celebrate it, either.

If there was such a thing as karma. Modell would never have won a Super Bowl after he screwed Cleveland.

per Tom Withers of the AP, the Browns have cancelled plans for any recognition of Art Modell tomorrow, requested by the Modell family.
I don't blame them.
Thank God this is over with for everyone in involved.
This is welcome news for sure.

OK, I'm not trying to sound like an ass here. Art did a lot for the city, donating millions to the Cleveland Clinic (who saved my grandfather's life after a heart attack). So I'm thankful for that. But... The Browns always have been and still are everything to my family. Art shuffling the team off to Baltimore killed damn near each and every one of us. And we get what in return? A "team" (and I use that term loosely) that is a shadow of a shadow of a once great team. So at first I hated Art for what he did, then the anger subsided over the years. So Art dying wasn't a happy day for me, but how can I say it? It was like closure to me. Without the living symbol or betrayal there anymore, there's no more reason to be upset. I've no more reason to be upset about it, and since I've lost family members near and dear to me, I hope his family finds peace in his passing where they know he isn't suffering a long and painful death. Heaven or hell, doesn't bother me because he ripped out my heart and I could care less anymore either way.

That really about sums it up for me as well. I dont hate the man I hate what he did and how he did it. May his family find joy in his many accomplishments.
If you need 3 years to be a winner you got here 2 years to early. Get it done Browns.

You all sound like a bunch of tree huggers!
When people kick you in the nads you don't mourn them.
I didn't go to the game but gave a lot of thought as to how I would have reacted had I of went and this travesty had been inflicted upon us.
I simply would have walked out to the concession area. He walked out on us, so I would have walked out on him.
You may call that classless. But I remember him firing Paul Brown. I remeber the ultimadum he gave Jim Brown. I didn't even like Modell when he was still here.
I wouldn't have hissed, booed or cheered about his death as some might have. But I would have given him the same treatment he gave us........ Walking out.
What does someone have to do before you simply don't "help mourn their loss"? Shoot your mom?

And then you take the other side, which in reality the whole situation is somewhat comical that if you were to know your going to die tomorrow and had time to think about your life today, Would Art Modells actions even be a thought in the overall view, does what a business man do with his business really have any true affect on your quality of life. It might had you been employeed by the team and lost your job in the move.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

I didn't say mourn him either, I was just wondering about the whole karma thing.. But around here, that could lead to, well, you know, what we have.

LOL, that's fine. People seem to like labels around this place anyway. I'm not going to ruin my life over my last sentence. I will go watch the games, as I always have, but I'm really just "eh" about the whole thing. It's just not fun any longer. And, it's likely that the person that called you a crybaby is still crying about the team moving....so...karma.

I know. Not that long ago after a devastating loss like yesterday I would have been miserable for a day or two.. yesterday by 5:00 I was helping my daughter with a project and laughing and having a good time.

2008 was the last season that excited/bothered me.
Since then, watching the games almost feels like an obligation.

I'm still passionate about the Browns. If I was the owner.. the Prez and GM would be doing push ups and sit ups in my office listening to me tell them my opinion of their talent evaluation and their drafting skills.
It's never going to be just another Sunday to me. I wait for Sunday all week long. I've got people saying we the posters on this board are whiners and crybabies. I've got news for that.. this is a message board geared to people that have a common interest in the Cleveland Browns.
Opinions are the BASIS for this board and that includes both positive and negative opinions. We operate with a decent set of common sense rules and it's reasonably well enforced by volunteers. If you're tired of it and you wish to move on to something else, please have at it. The knitting and crocheting rooms are just down the hall.
I've always maintained that if you put 5 Browns fans in a room with a case of beer.. pretty soon you are going to have 5 different opinions about what the Browns will do, should do, won't do and who they should draft.
I'm okay with that give and take on this MB, I've taken hits for my comments and I've moved on. I enjoy the different opinions and I learn all the time. I have a lesser opinion of those that think they know it all.

How about we let people feel the way they want to feel? Personally as related for football and life in general I think Art was a dirtbag. You (michelle or anyone else) are free to like him, or let it go all you want. I won't tell you how to feel, how about you (or the national media) don't tell me how I should feel? I don't obsess about him, or the move anymore, but I'm not sad he's dead. People die everyday. I AM sick of hearing his name, and sick over the revision of history that is going on.

Jesus, I think some of you people need to go back to school to learn how to read....
I never said I was sad he's dead. I said I don't care about it either way. And I never told anyone how to feel. I said carrying that crap around is unhealthy -- and that's just a fact.
And, Saint...really....just because people are a bit tired of the losing doesn't mean we will run off to another team. I am saying losing is old hat...it's almost expected with this team. When we win, it's awesome, but if we don't....par for the course.

DM.. my response wasn't really to you. There's people on the football forums calling out posters .. whiners and criers when people post their opinions. I'm not a fan of that.

Our football forum? I guess if everyone is happy with the Browns play, so be it. How anyone could be happy about what we saw yesterday is beyond my comprehension, but it is what it is.

Yea.. Pure and Gameday. I had to shake my head. I realize just like anyone else it's only the first game of the year, but I don't think it's a mistake to characterize the play of the offense as really bad.
Really, really bad.

It's really not about anger. It's about learning a lesson. It's not about hate, it's about giving some measure of respect towards someone who has totaly disrespected you.
Art Modell asked us for our support, our attendance and our loyalty. We gave it freely. In return, he gave none of that back. In fact, quite the opposite. You can call that a "business deal" if you like. But a part of that "business deal" was a total blind side of Browns fans. And he knew it when he did it.
Funny how the very term "business" is a built in excuse for every action made by a man. I guess you can throw out a sense of loyalty towards so many who have supported you financialy through good times and bad all in the name of "business". It seems quite popular these days. You can throw out the largest fan club in all of pro sports in the name of business.
In this life, from me, you get what you give. I gave loyalty and monitary spending to support Modells business as was expected from me. As I usually do, I gave him the benifit of the doubt.
In return, I got blind sided. To me, to move on is a good thing. Which I have done. But to forget makes one a sucker. To me, to show respect to someone who made you out to be a patsy makes one a fool.
It's not like I hope the man burns in hell or anything. But if someone makes a decision that he knows will hurt a lot of people, those people should remember that. Those people do not owe him respect in return.
People keep talking about karma. Well my feelings are we saw a dose of karma that Modell had coming to him. I didn't create that situation, he did.
Yes, karma created a situation where his own family didn't want Cleveland to even attempt a moment of silence for Modell. I think that speaks for itself.......

Sorry if I don't want to join in the singing of Kubaya with ya'll.

I know the history of the thing, Pit...I was there, too. I know how I felt and how I felt for many, MANY, years after. I will always have a little hole in that place, in fact. I will never forget missing my team and feeling a bit lost during those years.
But, freaking Kumbaya?? Really? I will sing nothing for that man....nothing. Not sure where you're getting otherwise.

You have to be one extreme or the other Michelle.. either you want to take a leak on his grave or you want to light candles and hold vigils.... You aren't allowed to have just let it go. If you have just let it go or if you dare to bring up one positive thing Modell did in his 80+ years on this planet, that puts you in the Kumbaya crowd according to Pit.

I've always maintained that if you put 5 Browns fans in a room with a case of beer.. pretty soon you are going to have 5 different opinions about what the Browns will do, should do, won't do and who they should draft.
This is SADLY true.
I say sadly, because just once, I'd like the conversation over that case of beer be talking about a playoff run, not the freaking draft

If you put 5 Browns fans in a room with only one case of beer, pretty soon you'll have a scuffle over the last can As for opinions, with 5 fans, I think you'd end up with at least 7 different opinions, lol
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

Obviously you didn't read the post above.
And Michelle, the Kumbaya thing was a joke.
Like I said, if this had taken place and I was there, I simply would have gotten up and walked out to the concession area.
No boos, no hatred shown. Life is too short for all of that. Simply, I would give him the same lack of interest he gave the Browns fan base. No more, no less. Your basic walk away......
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Chemical warfare created an unfair advantage for you though.
