Texans | Schaub signs Thu, 22 Mar 2007 09:22:51 -0700 KFFL.com
John McClain, of the Houston Chronicle, reports the Houston Texans have signed restricted free-agent QB Matt Schaub to a six-year contract worth $48 million with $7 million guaranteed. Schaub will receive $20 million in the first three years. If Schaub stays with the team the last three years of the contract, the Texans will have to pay Schaub a $10 million option bonus in 2010. The Texans paid QB David Carr an $8 million option in 2006 to keep him for the last three years of his contract.
That is a ridiculous contract! Unbelievable, its like he is getting a rookie contract all over again.
I would be ticked if we would have paid as much as Houston is for this guy. Their FO is going down at the end of the season, maybe before if they keep this crap up.

(AP) — The Houston Texans are close to acquiring Matt Schaub from the Atlanta Falcons. A trade for the highly regarded backup quarterback was expected to be announced Thursday, according to a person with knowledge of the deal who requested anonymity because the deal hadn't been completed.
The person did not disclose the details of the trade. The Houston Chronicle and the NFL Network said the Falcons will get second-round picks in 2007 and 2008 and that the teams will swap first-round picks this year, with Atlanta moving from 10th to eighth.
A call by The Associated Press to Texans general manager Rick Smith wasn't immediately returned Wednesday. Rich McKay, Atlanta's general manager, had no comment.
"Matt's a restricted free agent," McKay, chairman of the NFL's competition committee, said during a conference call with national reporters in preparation for next week's league meetings. "He's clearly entitled to visit every team. We've talked to a number of teams that have interest in Matt. That's all I'm going to say."
Houston television station KRIV reported on it's Web site that Schaub and agent Joby Branion arrived at Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport on Wednesday.
"We have an agreement in place," Branion told KRIV. "I dealt with Rick Smith on Ahman Green a couple of weeks ago. That gave us a great deal of comfort heading into these discussions believing we could get something done and we did. It wasn't easy but I think both sides are comfortable with where we are."
Schaub, who has performed well in preseason games, has started two games in his three-year career and is 84-of-161 for 1,033 yards with six touchdowns and six interceptions.
The acquisition of Schaub would make the possibility David Carr will remain with the team seem unlikely. Unhappy with Carr's performance, Houston tried to sign both Jeff Garcia and Patrick Ramsey before the two signed with other teams.
The Texans hoped that Carr, the first pick in the 2002 draft, would have a breakout year under the tutelage of first-year coach Gary Kubiak. Instead his inconsistency doomed the team to another losing season. He had two touchdown passes in the last 10 games, and finished with more interceptions (12) than TDs (11) for the first time since 2003.
He looked good early in the season, but soon regressed and had two of the worst performances in his career in the last third of the year. The worst moments included 32 yards passing in a win over Oakland and a career-high four interceptions in a loss to New England.
While most agree that Schaub has potential, it could be tough for him to move into a full-time starting role, especially with a team with protection issues like the Texans. A third-round pick in 2004, he hasn't started a game since 2005 and threw just 27 passes last season.
Houston also has quarterbacks Sage Rosenfels and Bradlee Van Pelt on its roster.
Carr is not the problem for the Texans.. not that i really care but Schaub is not better than Carr. one thing at least Savage wouldn't give up so mush for an unproven QB who has no wins..

Um, OL does NOT make a good QB.
A good OL makes a good QB better, that's the way I see it.
You can't just throw any stiff behind center, give him a pro bowl OL and running game and expect him to be good.

the point I was trying to make was Carr is not the problem on the Texans. I can not believe the Texans gave up so much for anothe QB that really has not proved he is better. he is also less mobile..if Savage had givin up that much to get Schaub he would need to go..

Good lord, isn't that similar to what we paid Couch in '99?
He'd better be in the Pro Bowl this year, LOL.

He was a third round pick, and this will be his first year as a starter. If he doesn't light it up fans will be calling for his head

I'll agree with you there, but there's other reasons that factor in getting Carr out of Houston. His morale is probably shot, the fans hate his guts, etc.
He's one of those guys a change of scenery may benefit.

With that contract and being a 4th year vet? He damn well better be.
Besides, there's a big gap between lighting it up and being a complete, utter disaster with third round QB's who are first year starters.

I agree but this has been argued to death. Without a decent line every QB will fail, if we draft a QB this year ( which I pray we dont) we are starting over again and will have a different QB starting the season for at least the past 5 years. It is a cycle that the Browns seem to have become stuck in.
I just remember when Dilfer was QB everyone was calling for Charlie, anyone remember the chants "If you want a chance to win, put Charlie in"? When Charlie struggled everyone wanted to see Anderson. Anderson didnt play lights out football either so whos to say Quinn or Russel will do any better. Im just sick of the game of musical QBs that we play here.

I agree I don't want the Browns to draft NO QB this year.. I'm for sticking with Frye for at least one more year

Hmmm...you don't want them to draft no QB. So, you're in favor of drafting a QB?

Your right no excuses. But we "should" have had a decent o-line last year, but Bentley went down, Tucker got sick, Andruzzi knees got shot. Also thats this years line you speak of and we have yet to see what our current crop of guys can do under this line. If the line performs adequatly and Charlie and DA blow then fine we have our answer and get a QB the following year. But if the line continues to suck and guys get hurt then this team will continue to struggle.

If you are refering to Tim - the Browns cut ties at precisely the right moment. Not 2 months after being released by the Browns - Tim's shoulder problems were revealed as he was cut by the Packers.
Tim has not played 1 down of NFL football since he left Cleveland. He has tried. The arm hasn't responded.
As for Carr... he (like Tim) is damaged goods courtesy of 249 sacks. Carr would perform no better for a team like Oakland or Cleveland. He needs a 2 year Jamacian vacation. Then, consider a comeback.

I wasn't referring to Tim. I was referring to the "typical fan" that blames every problem on the QB because they don't have a real understanding of the game.

I could agree with you except for one thing. The fans didn't pull the trigger on this trade. The new GM did. If Kubiak liked Carr and the GM agreed DC would still be the starting QB in Houston.
As it is they are stuck with a guy that probably no one will trade for because they know he'll eventually be released. Either that or they'll get him for a 6th or 7th round pick which is next to nothin, really.
I also wanna see how Schaub does when he has to run for his life on 2 out of every 3 downs. He might not be quite the Superman everyone seems to think he is. Time will tell.

I think Green is the better fit..now that doesn't mean there can't be another QB
What's this FIT [censored]???
Do u know something I don't about a Chudzinski Offense???
Chuds been an OC for a total of THREE YEARS...In COLLEGE...
U...Me...Anyone...Knows NOTHING about what O we will run...How can u say "FIT" at this point???
U can't...
And U can't say Carr is a Non Fit either...Not that u did...But Carr had some SOLID ASS games with a pathetic Houston team for 5+ years...
Take a long long look at the Tackles & Guards this kid has had around him...The Tackles are WORSE than what we've fielded for 8 years...And the Guards are even WORSE YET...
David Carr is the one QB coming from college that had high expectations that has been literally BLIND-SIDED every single year...No Offensive Line...No Running Game...(How's Williams doing so far in Houston???...LMAO...Dumbest ass move I've seen yet in a #1 overall...)...
Carr has EVERYTHING a Peyton Manning has...Noone's seen anything beyond a glimpse so far because of what SHOULD BE obvious reasons...Manning was being SLAMMED coming outta Tennessee for Happy Feet and numerous other things...He turned out pretty good I'd say...
OFFENSIVE LINE/RUNNING GAME/#1 WIDE-OUT...
Makes a HUGE difference...
Bring Carr here for a 4 or 5 Savage...(Best off season move u made yet)...And get JOE THOMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go Browns!!!

It will be interesting to see at the end of the year wether or not Shaub will even survive the beating he is about to take. And wether he can outperform what Carr did with them,

Carr was done in Houston... he looked horrible in his last couple of games.
And really this was suppose to be his year to shine. The management showed a lot of trust in him when most fans here in Houston wanted Vince Young last year.
I agree 100% that the Texans NEED to get their line better and get more offensive weapons... but I don't think Carr could have won here in Houston. Now with a fresh start I stil lthink he has the tools to be a good QB (though I'm not sure how he's doing mentally). But here in Houston? he was toast... poor decisions, happy feet, I just think he was beat up mentally here. I wouldn't be totally upset if he was in Cleveland (depending on what we gave up for him) but he was never going to win here in Houston.

Solid year... not great but solid...
one sports guy down here did have a good poitn on the draft last year... Houston offered Reggie a pretty sweet deal to be here in Houston and he turned it down... I'm not sure what he wanted but it was rumored to be a lot more than Williams got... might have had a lot to do with not going after Reggie... but still a horrible move IMO as well.
I think Mario will be a good player... and with how bad their defense was (worse than the offense was actually) I can sort of understand the pick... but only a little
