Trent Richardson, Brandon Weeden, and Mitchell Schwartz versus Robert Griffin the Third. How is that decision looking today?
When Washington made "the deal" before the draft I got sick to my stomach.
Then the draft came and it was like food poisoning when the Browns reached for Weeden in the first round and passed on Riley Reiff.
After that I said well Holmgren was brought here to solve the quarterback problem. He has worked with many great QB's he must see something in Weeden that I do not.
Then I said to myself "I will give Holmgren the benefit of the doubt. I will give Brandon Weeden his day in court."
Well, his day came and went. He is exactly what I expected and worse. Sorry, but I don't want to hear about first game, rookie, etc. etc.
Brandon Weeden is not prepared to play in the NFL and he should not have started the game.
Holmgren forced his hand on Heckert in the draft and made the choice to draft Weeden in the first round. Then Weeden was given the starters job because he was a first round pick and is 29 and the Browns felt that he has to start now because there is no time to waste.
It was decided that Colt McCoy did not possess the physical tools to be a NFL starter. He was led along to compete for second string.
**Note this is not a I love Colt McCoy thread.
What you saw yesterday from Weeden is clearly a guy in way over his head. Clueless about playing professional football.
On top of losing the game with interceptions he looked like he was in a complete fog. Like he just woke up and was looking around saying "where am I? What am I doing here?
"Hello Brandon this is the NFL (as in Not For Long)."
Near the end of the half, last play of the half, Hail Mary situation, You are suppose to throw the ball, up in the air, in the end zone, not scramble for nothing.
Remember when Holmgren and company said two years ago when Colt was thrown into the starters role and played. They all said: "the games is not to big for him". Well it is too big for Brandon.
Did anyone feel confident based upon what they just witnessed in the game that when the Browns got the ball with a minute left trailing by a point that Brandon was the man to win the game? If you did, I feel your pain.
It was inexcusable to let Griffin get away. Brandon Weeden is the result of a missed opportunity that will take years to correct "if" correct decisions are made.
The first decision is to fire Holmgren and the second is to draft another quarterback with their first pick next year.
But will that happen? Not as long as politics rule.

All I will say is this ...
Everyone knows I've been adamantly against Weeden since April. He simply is not, and will not be, an average QB. Our front office preaches youth and learning together, yet then they reach for a 29 year old QB who doesn't even have background with an actual playbook. Add that to his inability to handle pressure, inaccurate bouts, lack of athleticism, and fellow rookies around him ... it's a recipe for disaster.
He looked exactly as I expected yesterday ... and things won't get much better ... BOOK IT.
I was also underwhelmed by TRich's burst and vision. I know it's his first game and the line sucked, but he didn't look the part to me.
And Greg Little is the ultimate head case/drops guy. Quincy Morgan was way better.
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

If Weeden comes out next week, goes 18-32 with 2 TDs and 2 INTs and 250 yards, what will your post say?
Will Weeden still be in over his head?
What if we win next week? What if he lights it up RG3 style?
It is completely ridiculous to make such claims after 1 game. I know it was terrible, and I know Weeden lost the game for us. But it was 1 game. Rookie QBs are going to lose games. This one just happened to hurt because we had it in our finger tips.
If Weeden doesn't show some improvement by the bye, I can understand the doom and gloom. But it was one game. One.
*Side note: This is just me thinking rationally. I wasn't a big fan of Weeden pick, but I also didn't like McCoy's play last year. I really hope Weeden turns it around next week and plays at least average.
**Your post is ridiculous. You're going to be in for a long year. The Browns (probably) aren't winning the superbwol this year, but I'd be willing to bet Weeden doesn't look this bad the rest of the year.

I too was against the weeden pick but that's water under the bridge at this point.
The kid has skills but are they enough. I guess we'll find out.
But damn, can we at least give the new offensive coordinator, new RB, new RT, new Receivers more than one game before we slit our wrists..
Bone,, I respect you but please, step back from the edge for a moment.

Once teams get some extensive film on RGIII theyll contain him more.
I cant for the life of me understand guyr ripping TR in his first NFL action! I f we get the passing game going the guy will be a beast! He did deliver the hardest blow Ive seen in years!

happened to Cam after the first month of last year.
and man, I didn't think bubble-screens would work in the NFL over and over, but the Skins made them work against NO. RGIII was running the Baylor offense and it worked!
he is a master at getting that extra second when the pocket collapses and putting a throw on the money to his WR though. that Garcon TD really showed it well.

Ok, can someone explain something to me?
We made a play for RG3, right? It was a blind auction, and we lost, correct?
I would imagine when you enter a blind auction, there's a balance between giving up too much and not offering enough to get what you want. I believe the record indicates we offered the 4th, 22nd, and our first next year. That seems like a decent offer to me.
What exactly are fans mad about when it comes to the fact that we did not secure RG3?
If the accounts are accurate, we certainly tried. It looks like the offer was pretty decent.
Do fans believe we didn't try hard enough? Is that the complaint?
I can see some anger if we didn't try at all, but we did.
What's the angle here? Someone explain it to me.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

Was it ever confirmed that Holmgren forced his hand on the Weeden deal? Heckert seemed quite giddy about him before the draft.

I agree... Weeden's had an ENTIRE DAY in his professional career and completely blew it!!! We CANNOT dump him fast enough!
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

Yeah, I don't get that. Offering two additional first round picks to move up two spots? How can that possibly not get it done? The whole thing was a sham orchestrated by that Turd Fisher. Fortunately, he got what was coming to him losing out on the WRs and DLs he wanted.

Don't waist your breath nologo.
All these self professing experts need is one game
It was pretty obvious to me that the Eagles game plan to not give us the deep half of the field. It was unanticipated by our offense game plan going in to the game.
Another obvious point was that we where giving Weeden max protection and it was probably prudent thing too, but that limits your options in the passing game.
The slant was basically taken away too, which shouldn't come as a surprise, with our mirroring offenses.
The FB in the flat was probably an option to the defense if we had a FB who could execute it properly.
Weeden over threw both Moe and Smith in the corner of the endzone on separate occasions and I know that he can hit that pass.
He was high on most of his passes (reminded me of Boomer) and was just too amped up.
He needed to steady his nerves.
A couple shots of a good strong mouthwash (w/alcohol) might suffice.

I think that all parties involved where all on the same bus, with the only question as to where to draft him (22nd or hope he fell to pick 37)

I've said this before but Mike Holmgren's ability as a QB evaluator is vastly overblown. He can coach the hell out of them but he's no GM. He had Bill Walsh feeding QBs to him in SF and Ron Wolf in GB but everything after that has been ugly. Aside from Hasselbeck (who he brought over after Wolf drafted him), it's been bum after bum. Hell, he went after Charlie Frye.
When we missed out on our legit QB options, what we should've done was improve our other positions and waited for our crack next year. Even if Colt isn't the guy, I'd rather start a guy who isn't the guy but costs us nothing than reach in the 1st for a guy who isn't the guy. Getting "the best of what's left" at a position that is already reached for to begin with is a terrible idea. Sure, he got hurt but can you imagine the difference in our line with DeCastro starting and Lauvao on the pine?
This is largely how Holmgren and the bunch will be judged... Weeden is going to either make or break them so they may as well start him... it just sucks we're even in the position where we have to.
We're... we're good?

I don't think anyone will admit it, but there are some that would have given up the entire draft this year and part of next to get him,. Generally speaking, I think the complaint is, we didn't go far enough.
After one game, it looks like RGIII is the real deal and may have been worth more than we offered.. But that's just one game
Most of us agreed that RG would be special. He sure looked like it yesterday. Good enough to throw in 2 firsts this year, a Second this year and a 1st next? We'll find out.

While Brandon Weeden stunk the place up yesterday, and while some parts of the mess were purely his fault (i.e. overthrowing receivers a few times, horribly inaccurate throws a couple other times)- I think the REAL culprit here is Pat Shurmur.
The Browns went and hired Brad Childress for WHAT? Nothing, it seems. It looks to me like Shurmur just calls the same ineffective, vanilla, non-chance-taking calls he did last year. It's as if there is ZERO difference in the game plan or ability to adjust as we saw last year. As if Childress came in and Shurmur just said "Doesn't matter. I'm still gonna do what I want to do and nothing is any different. I'm THE MAN."
I swear- Pat Shurmur strikes me as a dumb guy with a big ego- and that is a deadly combination. It basically dictates that this guy will call whatever loser play he wants, and no one will convince him that he's the wrong guy to be calling plays- even as he watches his offense get crushed because the opposition keys in on everything he calls before the ball is even snapped.
Weeden needs to get used to the speed of this game- but my fear is that his development will be stunted and this team will never go anywhere with Shurmur at the helm.
Please Mr. Haslam, we beg you to clean house. Of course no one wants to start over yet again and we all understand the need for stability and giving a coach more than a couple seasons to get things right- but it should be obvious to anyone with a brain that Shurmur is not the guy who's gonna get it done. I trust Haslam to NOT be a silent, lackadaisical owner who will just hire GM's, football presidents, or coaches based on the story they pitch him, like Lerner was. I think Haslam is the type who will hire the right, experienced people for the job. So let's go ahead and clean house one more time, and get the right freakin' people who are at least worthy of a 2nd, 3rd chance to get it right. It's painfully obvious that Shurmur (or, really, even Holmgren) are NOT the right people for the job.

I think the only beef with the RGIII botched trade was that when it's a QB, there's no such thing as "overpaying", IF he's potentially an elite signal caller, I'm not even sure how you put a value on it.
From all accounts, we bid the minimum and then acted shocked when Washington made a better offer. To me, in my completely amateur guess, it smelled like a FO trying to make the CYA move.
I wish I genuinely believed Holmgren desperately wanted RGIII but in reality I just envision him ogling a picture of Weeden, while trying to negotiate a half assed trade attempt for Griffin.
Fair or not we're going to judge RGIII vs. Weeden, T-Rich and Schwartz and the inevitable stiff we'll draft with next years #1.
I don't mean that to sound dramatic but 4 quarters is not worth a dollar in the NFL. If RGIII turns in to a top 5 QB and the asking price was only a #1 swap, 2 additional 1's and two 2's, you look like a complete idiot for not making that trade. Especially when you acquired an additional #1 via trade the previous season.
Time will tell but it was just so unbelievably frustrating for me to have watched the horrific QB play for as long as I have, only to watch the FO not swing for the fences when it FINALLY had the chance. We tried to bunt the guy over, have him steal 3rd and then hope Shelly Duncan could single him in.....aka the "we know something apparently no one else knows" move.

I'm glad we didn't trade for RG3 we needed too many positional/quality players. I think if we were in that position next year... we do it. We are really close in terms of depth and starters. We probably need a standout WR, a upgrade Guard, a upgrade at FB, at QB, CB and FS. Most of those players can be had in later rounds minus the QB/WR/shut down CB. (maybe early 2nd round)
this year... no way
Hunter + Dart = This is the way.

Absolutely. I'll wait and see on Weeden but that still doesn't change my position on Griffin.
I genuinely hope Weeden gets it but wether or not he does and to what degree does not mitigate making a poor choice in not overpaying for a player who's 7 years younger.
If Weeden were 22, I'd be a little less worried. While he's still a rookie, he's working on borrowed time from day 1.

yeah, i've been worried about Weeden since we drafted him, but even if he ends up successful, I was fully expecting him to struggle mightily out of the gate. especially with the defenses we are set to face and the youth we have on offense overall.

Some Browns fans seem genuinely shocked that the Broncos were able to win with Tebow last year by revamping their offense.... I've seen it mentioned that the Redskins incorporated a lot of Baylor's offense to make the transition easier for RGIII, etc.
Last year we had a shorter, more mobile, less arm strength QB.... this year we have a tall statue with a canon.... did anybody notice ANY difference in the offense or the playcalling? I did not. I guess the plan is to keep drafting players until we find the ones that can do exactly what Shurmur wants to do.

Great point, DC. If this is how it's going to be, why not just keep McCoy and use the draft pick on someone at a different position?

I knew people would come and say: "knee jerk reaction, only one game, not fair, give him time".
This is not a knee jerk reaction. Look at the offense he ran at OK. He was the "man" playing with kids, throwing to Blackmon, in a no huddle offense, with all day to throw. Watch the tape on his college career when he is under pressure.
This is not about Brandon Weeden. This is about not making the deal for RG3 and the decision to reach for Weeden in the first round.
Weeden at best was a third rounder and reach in the second.
Imagine yourself as Joe Thomas or another veteran ( oh, do we have one? Phil Dawson) you have gone through losing seasons one after the other. You gone through grueling training camps, lifted weights till your blue in the face. Then you witness Brandon Weeden under pressure in the first game and the result. Now lets say he has another miserable performance. How are you gonna feel?
Look around the league at the other rookie QB's or last years rookie QB's did any look as pitiful as Weeden?
What is it? Why does everyone just accept losing? Is it habit?
Look! We were ahead of Washington in the draft. We had two number one picks. Does everyone have amnesia?
I am disgusted with losing. But what is worse is making bad decisions that effect the team for years.
Haslam is the only hope. He signs the checks. If he is the guy that he is portrayed to be then he will see what has to be done.

Again this is not a rap on Richardson or Schwartz. I believed right from the start that Richardson was the third best player in the draft.
Schwartz may very well "develop" into a good player.
This also not an indictment on Weeden. He is a third or fourth round player who got drafted early because of need then forced into the starters role unprepared.
That is not the point.
The Browns went into this off season looking for a franchise quarterback. Luck and Griffin were clearly at the top of the class. Luck was not going to be made available. Understandable.
We had a clear path to Griffin. Then came all the BS. Oh, "we made just as good an offer". "They did business with Shanahan because he was friends with Fisher."
Garbage, it was an excuse because they did not submit what they were told to be their best and final offer. Holmgren thought he could get back in the deal and he miscalculated. All his responses were a cover-up to cover him.
The rest of what happened was the result of that failure.
Then it was on to the draft. "We like Weeden". Then it was forced upon Heckert to take him in the first round.
Shurmur was forced to name him the starter. He is a first time head coach and will not buck the system.
Weeden is going to play sink or swim because he was drafted to play not because he is good enough to play.

That's the entire point. If you are convinced that your current QB is not the answer, you move on.
At that juncture, every snap McCoy would be taking is wasted time that Weeden could be developing.
If as the season nears its close this team still looks the same, your points may very well be validated. But after one game everything everyone is saying is pure frustration and conjecture.
A VERY good offer was made for RG3 by all accounts. It simply didn't happen so they moved on. It sickens me to see people acting like the sky is falling after one game. It's pre-mature and people act like someone stole their birthday.
But sadly, I expected as much....

If as the season nears its close this team still looks the same, your points may very well be validated. But after one game everything everyone is saying is pure frustration and conjecture.
I can see this to be true to an extent. But Weeden hasn't displayed anything preseason either. Yes, he has an arm. So fricken what. H'es yet to display one other tangible skill to work off of. He's looked lost and the game has not slowed down for him at all.
You can't tell me with a straight face he's better than McCoy right now or in the near future. And please dont start with the anti-McCoy stuff. He may not be the answer but we have a talented young defense work with this year. I dont see throwing the entire year away, just to get an overaged rookie experience when he's not close to NFL starter lvl yet.

Let's review shall we? Weeden is going to be the QB for this season unless he is injured. That is a given. He will get his shot.
The question at year end which will be made by Haslam and company (meaning Banner, (Heckert and Shurmur if they are still in place) will be do we spend another first round pick on a QB?
My answer, is yes and trade up if necessary to get the best QB coming out.
Weeden is not first round material and at 29 the time to develop is just not there.
Better to cut your loses and move on.
We will see how this plays out, but for me I do not believe Weeden is championship caliber. And that is what it is all about.
I applaud John Elway. All the Tebow talk. He led them to playoffs etc. He knew the guy was not a QB who could win a Super Bowl and he traded him. Then he got one who could, and backed him up with a guy to develop.

No, Weeden looked horrible.... like, record-setting horrible.... those are facts, from those facts comes frustration, from that frustration comes conjecture...

It's pre-mature and people act like someone stole their birthday.
Well, Philly offered us a week 1 gift.. and Weeden is the reason we didn't get to keep it... so I suppose it is very much like that. Except I have a birthday once a year, the Browns win an opener much less frequently than that.

I gotta be honest, Weeden was horrible. Horrible, horrible, terrible, wretched.
Obviously that means he's a bust, a reach, a horrible pick. He'll just never have "it". I think we should cut our losses and just cut the bum now. I mean Colt McCoy gives us a better chance to win now and we know that's what matters. Winning now. Now dammit!
You know who else was terrible? Trent Richardson. That dude is a bum too. He's already proven to be injury-prone and he's not big enough for the NFL game. I mean our greatest RB ever already said he was just "average" and his first game did nothing to change that perspective.
While we're at it we should probably can Shurmur, Holmgren, Heckert....our long snapper. The kid who sells newspapers down the street....my dogs (they can't even get kicked properly when we lose, go figure). I mean the last time our QB and HC sucked we canned them and we turned it around IMMEDIATELY so I'm pretty sure we should try that again.
Does that about sum it up?

You know what amazes me? That all these guys know so much more than anyone in the FO or coaching staff. Yet not one of them works in any capacity with an NFL team. Some team should take advantage of all this abundant knowledge.....

This pretty much sums my opinion up. I could endure another year of McCoy if Weeden continues down this path "developing" as some say it. A third year, second in the system, could tell us a lot about McCoy. We will be in position next year with this schedule to pick up our "QB of the future" without all the barter.
Man, do we need this game to be entirely nerves for Weeden. Wasted 1st round picks are truly kicks in the nuts!

Once again if the browns offer as reported was true, we made a good offer in a blind auction. So even if you think Weeden sucks, and will continue to suck, I don't understand this anger at not getting RGIII.
And that purple font sucks. It reminds me of the Cravens.....any chance you'll stop using it?

How do you know what people's careers are? with that aside, they should because it's painfully obvious that weeden sucks. His preseason was less than stellar and he continues to suck- a month of football won't change anything (minus solidifying that he is a crappy QB)
Hunter + Dart = This is the way.

I actually know the careers of several people on here. And none of them work in the NFL.
Of the ones I do not know I'm sure that most of those guys, that know exactly every wrong move the Browns have ever made, would not hesitate to let us ALL know that they had some tenuous connection to the NFL.
Anyway, if it makes you feel better to moan and groan and take cover because the sky is falling by all means, be my guest.
