Many of those stops came with 8 and 9 in the box. You gotta check out of those plays and take advantage of the 1 on1. Everyone we drafted supposed to be run after catch prospects so put the ball in their paw and let them catch and run with the damn thing.

In my not so humble opinion, WAY, WAY, WAY too much is made of "play calling".

It's like the favorite thing for people to pick on a coach for and everyone doing the nitpicking has absolutely no insight into what the coaching staff is seeing or thinking.

I say this: If the play succeeds, or had a chance to succeed barring poor execution - it was a good call. If the play had no chance at all to succeed even with perfect execution, it was a bad call.

I don't know... Telling weeden to throw the ball 10 yards out of bounds and to drop the ballwhen going back towards the RB seem like pretty bad calls to me .

This whole thing is really funny when you start breaking down the mindset of this board as of late.

Mike Holmgren forced Old man weeden on poor Tom Heckert.

Weeden isn't a superstar because Shurmur is an idiot calling plays. If Shurmur had called better plays those passes wouldnt have sailed so high lol.

If we had drafted guards higher our offense would be kicking ass by now.

Schwartz was a bust and a horrible decision by Heckert until well he actually played a regular season game and did pretty good.

Our D really sucks and were only top 10 last year because teams knew we couldnt score. Our D still sucks because they didnt completely shut down Shady McCoy. Michael Vick only looked bad because well he sucks now. If Andy Reid wasn't a moron the Eagles would have killed the Browns.

O yea fun times being a Browns fan.

This is my nomination for "Post of the Year".

Honestly, reading some of the dopey opinions since last Sunday has been much worse than anything that happened in the game.

Telling him to throw to Marecic is a terrible call ...

Marecic was the decoy, the play should have gone to the wide open Ben Watson.

The most telling stat about our run-game comes from Jamie Hemmsley at ESPN:

Quote:

Trent Richardson needs help: The Browns' rookie running back has been having a one-on-one verbal battle with Bengals middle linebacker Rey Maualuga this week. But Richardson won't be able to beat Cincinnati's run defense alone. In his NFL debut, Richardson rushed for 39 yards, which led to Maualuga describing Richardson's game as "nothing spectacular." Richardson's ineffectiveness was the result of getting hit in the backfield on seven of his 19 carries, according to ESPN Stats & Information. That was tied for most in the NFL for Week 1. Richardson lost 4 yards on those rushes but gained 43 yards on the 12 carries (3.6-yard average) when he wasn't hit behind the line.

For those who aren't math wizards, Richardson was hit in the backfield on 38% of his attempted running plays.

Two things have to happen and happen quickly:

1) The line has to block better, and

2) Weeden will have to look like the supposed NFL-ready QB he was touted as being.

Some times a RB has to make the first man miss too. Richardson was known for that in College.
He wasn't at the top of his game last Sunday and neither where the guys blocking for him.

Don't try and make it out to be more than what it was.

Bad play call? No Weeden didn't go through his progressions and the play wasn't executed properly by Marecic.

I agree you can't put the blame on the play caller there.

The play calling was fine last year, and it's fine this year.

It's the execution has been lacking.

We were tied with another team for the most number of times our RB was hit in the backfield, and our QB had the lowest rating of any passer.

I don't need to try and make it out to be more than it was. Those numbers make it quite clear what happened, and what needs to happen. There is no hyperbole there, only fact.

I was merely pointing out the fact that Richardson was not at the top of his game and he shares a responsibility in those plays. Some times a back needs to make someone miss and Richardson will be the first to say that he could have done a better job. that's not hyperbole.

Richardson could have bounced outside several times against the Eagles for huge yards. He tended to run into the pile and was a bit slow to burst through any holes. The rust will chip away as the season goes forward.

Brandon Weeden Disaster?

Take heart fellow dogs!

I have a formula to keep you sane this year!

Do as I do and treat this season like your golf game.

I never dwell on that drive that went ob or that muffed bunker shot. I remember that 30 ft slippery birdie putt that dropped or the chip in to save par...and I smile.

Weedens pick? pfft....DQs TD!!!!

Weeden Pick? Bah! Young undrafted LBrs playing like studs!!!

What keeps popping into my head, just like my best shot of my last round is the lick that TRich put on the eagles Coleman (buckeye). That helmut flying and the look of surprise and pain on his face, well, that my friends was just priceless and will sustain me lol.

I don't really remember him being touted as being NFL-ready. But he is an older rookie who spent 5 years in professional baseball. That should have resulted in him coming in as a rookie without the overwhelming, wide-eyed, head spinning initial effects of being a part of a professional sports organization. Weeden had already been involved in professional sports so he came in knowing the drill of what is expected of him.

In that, and in that only, he's ahead of other rookies who come onto the team in awe of their situation.

In other words, Weeden was touted as being a more mature rookie. Not necessarily a more NFL-ready quarterback in the sense of playing experience and skills.

At least that's how I took it all along.

Luck was more NFL-ready. RGIII had abundant QB skills and high expectations. Weeden was the mature rookie of the bunch. Nothing more.

Yeah, if there was a bright spot for the Offense in Sundays game, that was probably it.

Bodes well for Richardson.. Honestly with him I just thought he was rusty and I expect him to come around and be a real winner for us.

If Weeden throws two or more picks and doesn't top 200 yards this week, then he must be benched. We can't afford to lose winnable games while a 29-year-old rookie figures things out. Not when we have an overachieving game manager sitting on the bench.
And here's another thought: What has the obese walrus done for his $5M a year, exactly? He rides around in a golf cart and talks about the "big show." He doesn't coach and he doesn't draft. His sole contribution seems to be hiring Heckert (good) and giving his old friend's nephew a big break at our expense.

now as for us against the run, we were in pass protection mode and then aggressively attacking the ball if handed off. That is not an easy way to play defense and you will give up some yards but these guys were outstanding.

So we were in "pass protection mode" on our running downs?

You hit the nail on the head there ddub.

That's why he wasn't drafted 1st overall. That's why nobody offered up three first round draft picks for him either.

Some wish to ignore the obvious and carry on anyway.

Do you understand what strategy we were employing on defense? There was only a handful of plays where we loaded up to stop the run.

I'd agree and question how it could be perceived otherwise. Baseball plays the same game, be it college, minors or the bigs with the slight exception they can use aluminum bats in college. Football differs drastically in the game that's played at the college level vs. the pros and Weeden's college experience at OSU didn't necessarily lend him any advantages in the pro game. He may be more mature about how to carry himself and how to live within a locker room atmosphere but he's trying to learn a new system and learn how to be a different QB than he was in College. He may have all the measurables but can he develop the skills to take advantage of those measurables? His age in this respect is not his friend.

Typical DDub...comes out of hiding to rain on my parade

As noted, the Browns FO didn't have to say they believed him to be NFL-ready. They handed him the job from the moment the card was turned in. There was no competition with McCoy. He didn't have to earn anything. They touted his maturity as giving him a leg-up, and gave him all the benefits given to any already-named starting QB, including giving him the last pre-season game off.

The FO didn't come right out and say it. They didn't have to.

Still, the reality hasn't changed. Weeden has got to play better if the run-game is going to work.

As for Richardson, sure, he didn't get any work in pre-season so it's to be expected that he wouldn't be on top of his game. However, when you're hit way too often in the backfield, the real problem isn't whether or not he could have made a guy miss 3 yards in the backfield....

I know it is splitting hairs here, but Weededn is still only 28!!! I get so tired of people saying he is older than he really is.

I've been pretty quiet about Weeden, people seem to forget he is a rookie! People seem to forget that was his first NFL start! People seem to forget he has a rookie RT, a rookie RB, two rookie WR's, 2 second year WR's, a second year FB, basically two second year G's! I'm not saying he will be the second coming or anything but he does deserve to get a little time before "The Sky Will Fall"!

Some forget about the other rookie QB's last week didn't play very well either except for RGIII.

Luck 23 of 45 for 309, 1 TD, 3 Int, 1 FumL, QBR 39.2, RTG 52.9, L
Tannehill 20 of 36 for 219, 0 TD, 3 INT, 1 Fum, QBR 3.1, RTG 39.0, L
Wilson 18 of 34 for 153, 1 TD, 1 INT, 1 FumL, QBR 27.6, RTG 62.5, L
Weeden 12 of 35 for 118, 0 TD, 4 INT, 2 Fum, QBR 1.2, RTG 5.1, L
Griffin 19 of 26 for 320, 2 TD, 0 INT, 1 Fum, QBR 93.8, RTG 139.9, W

And then Cutler the other night:
Cutler 11 of 27 for 126, 1 TD, 4 INT, 0 Fum, QBR 4.7, RTG 28.2, L

My point of this is, you do not hear the QB rumblings about the other rookie QB's. People realize rookies are rookies and are giving them a little time. I threw Cutler in there to show you even a veteran struggles at times.

Frenchy, I agree with you.., I mean, hey, I didn't want Weeden but he's ours now so I'm pushing for him to succeed and just cause I didn't want him, I'm not beyond looking at the reality of the situation. (you forgot to add first year OC)

Anyway, the thing that bugs the hell out of me is, McCoy didn't even have that and he was beat down almost from the word "go"!

It takes a team.. no one player can do it all. Give these guys a little time and maybe we'll see what we really have. I'm absolutly sure we're better than we showed last sunday. (or at least I sure as hell hope so )

this has been a pattern of the Browns under Tom Heckert. Just handing players starting jobs without them earning it. and the common thread. they all suck.
For 2 years in a row Lauvao has been handed a started job.
Brian Robiskie was handed a starting job in 2011.
Jason Pinkston was handed a starting job this year.

Geeze why didnt he make these guys earn their starting spots? They all suck!

Dont forget about McCoy, Hardesty, Jordan Cameron, and Buster Skrine....oh wait they weren't just given starting spots.

Seriously when you criticize Heckert you are being ridiculous. He is performing better than average as a GM.

In all fairness, Lauvao was playing next to a nothing Right Tackle while he was trying to learn his job.

In all fairness, he got rid of Robo pretty damn quick when it became obvious

In all fairness, what choice did he have but to hand the starting job to Pinkston last year. and as for this year, pinkston played pretty damn well for a raw rookie.. he earned the starting job this year

Having said that, do you really think he's not always looking for an upgrade at every position?

If your team is a combined 9-23 over 2 years, then no one's job should be safe.
you have 9 wins for a reason. .
I recall Troy Smith doing a interview after he cut by the Steelers.
He said Tomlin told him "the only safe job around here is Big Bens"
astonishing this is coming from a organization that is in the playoffs every year.
Mike Adams wasn't handed a job even though he was the 56th pick in the draft.
he's 2nd on the depth chart.
lets be honest,Mitchell Schwartz was handed a job.
I'm starting to see that the Browns plan in 2012 isn't to win.

When I hear Obama talk about how Bush ran the economy into the ground and they are complaining because he hasnt fixed their mess fast enough, it really reminds me of this regime.

We had 10 years of Jimmy Carter and George W. Bush, wasting picks and destroying prospects. Now many are complaining because Heckert and Holmgren havent fixed it quick enough. They inherited nothing other than Joe Thomas, Rubin, DQ and Alex Mack.

Now we have the deepest and most talented secondary since that pack of wild dawgs was blasting everything in site. The linebackers are young and inexperienced but they look really good. The front 4 is deep and talented and the upside is off the charts with the defensive side of the ball.

For the O, they tried to patchwork it while they revamped the D. The results weren't good. So now we are revamping the O with the same attention as the D received.

Everyone likes to complain about no attention to the OL but they have drafted in 3 years almost as many offensive linemen as the other regimes did in their 10 years. Our top 6 offensive linemen were all drafted by the Browns.

I want to see if they can do with the O what they did with the D.

And what is it they said that maturity would give him a "leg up" on exactly? I think it simply means he won't dwell on his mistakes. That he will learn from them and move forward from there. Much like a pitcher does when a batter hits it out of the park on them...... On to the next batter.

Whether that pans out to be true or not is yet to be seen. But nothing was stated or implied to the contrary despite trying to lead to that conclusion.

The FO didn't come right out and say it. They didn't have to.

All the FO was saying is that Colt wasn't the guy for the job so let's move on to the next candidate. It wasn't so much of a gold star for Weeden than it was that McCoy was the past tense at that juncture.

Nobody knows if Weeden will be a franchise QB. But the longer you stick with a guy you know isn't the future, the longer you wait to move into your future.

Funny how on one hand you say sticking with Mangini was a mistake. This FO knew he wouldn't be here at the beginning of the next season so it was wasted time.

This is the exact same thing. Once this FO concluded it was time to move on at the QB position, that's exactly what they did. Yet now suddenly that same "moving forward" theory you seemd to advocate they should have taken on Mangini, is some bad thing to do when moving forward at QB and an excuse to try to sacrifice someone?

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

And yet after Weeden made a mistake by throwing to a well-covered receiver down the right sideline, he turned right around and did what? He threw to a well-covered receiver down the right sideline.

I guess he wasn't ready to learn from his mistakes afterall, which is a second example of his maturity level being a myth.

Look, Weeden admitted in his quote his maturity was supposed to make him more ready, and he said he wasn't. When someone admits something there isn't much left to debate.

Weeden wasn't a "candidate." Weeden was "the man" and he wasn't handed the job in the hopes that he was ready. He was handed the job because they fully expected him to be ready. Their actions spoke to that quite clearly and quite loudly, right down to the phony-balogny competition.

That isn't apples-to-apples. That isn't even apples-to-oranges. That's banana's-to-hand-grenades.

I just wanted to say that I have to agree with Toad on this one (even though I view him more of a conspiracist as of late, joking ). You snag candidates after the first round and develop them to replace aging or struggling starters on the current roster. If they are drafted in the first round, everybody (media and fans alike) crown that individual the QB of the future. My point is candidates sit and learn. McCoy was a candidate, Weeden was drafted to be the answer which is what the fuss is all about.

jc Can this thread just go away? A two part qb disaster thread....after a rookie qb's first game? Only in Cleveland.

In all honesty, I hope it goes away tomorrow after we see a rookie QB play lights out against a limping Bengal D

Cleveland Browns expecting a step forward for Brandon Weeden against Cincinnati Bengals

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Brandon Weeden's woeful rookie debut isn't enough for the Browns to agree with the notion that he's not ready to start in the NFL.

"I don't feel that way," said offensive coordinator Brad Childress. "I don't think he cowered in the face of it. ... I don't feel like it's too big for him. You're going to throw interceptions. The first pick of the draft [Indianapolis' Andrew Luck] threw three."

Childress, heading into Sunday's game against the 0-1 Bengals, broke down Weeden's four interceptions and concluded that only the last one in the fourth quarter was a bad throw.

"The first one was a tipped ball [to Greg Little], which could've [been] first and goal, where you say, 'That was a pretty good throw,'" he said. "The two down the sideline ... he doesn't give Travis [Benjamin] a chance to use his speed. That's one of those where you put it out there and you have to give him an opportunity to make a play. The last one is a straight overthrow."

Childress did acknowledge that Weeden's fumbles when hit is a concern. Weeden lost the ball three times during last week's 17-16 loss to the Eagles, but one was negated by a penalty and the other two were recovered. He also fumbled on his three of his four preseason sacks.

"[The ball is] a sack of gold and you have to lock it up in the pocket," said Childress. "I know they're coaching on that side of the ball too -- just strip and sack. That's a real vulnerable position, when you're back and you're starting to come through. All it takes, literally, is a finger on that ball."

The Bengals, who finished fifth last season with 45 sacks, will try to rattle Weeden into submission. But the Browns have spent the week trying to bolster his confidence.

"[The quarterback coach's job is] part father-confessor, part psychiatrist, hug him and help them up off the floor," said Childress. "[It's] just propping him back up and getting him back up on the horse. I'd worry about him if he didn't keep shooting. You can't all of a sudden go into the fetal position."

Fox analyst John Lynch, who called the Browns game last week, noted that Weeden looked overwhelmed at times. But he expects him to bounce back, especially with Trent Richardson a week healthier.

"That's a good Philly defense and one that can make life miserable for a young quarterback," he said. "He was a little bit rattled and made bad decisions, but he didn't get much help.

"Anyone knows that pass to (Greg) Little should've been caught and maybe even a TD. The two to Benjamin, he threw jump balls to a corner who's four inches taller. But I don't think he looked overwhelmed all day."

Lynch suggested that perhaps the Browns should've considered going to Colt McCoy. "You had Philly on the ropes and it didn't look like it was going to happen with Brandon," he said.

Fox and NFL Network analyst Brian Billick argues against overreacting.

"It was a rough start for him, but I don't know that we can slam dunk [Robert Griffin III] into the Hall of Fame after one game, either," he said. "Sometimes it's a function of the total team. I'm doing the Indy game this week. When you look at Indy, Miami, Cleveland, the fact of the matter is, they're just not very good football teams right now."

Billick observed that Peyton Manning had three interceptions in his rookie debut.

"But Peyton had Reggie Wayne to start with and Troy Aikman had Michael Irvin and then Emmitt Smith," he said. "Having that one go-to guy makes all the difference in the world."

Billick, the former Super Bowl-winning coach of the Ravens, thinks it would be wrong for the Browns to sit Weeden. "Every snap he takes will benefit him the next year," he said. "You don't learn anything from the sideline."

Billick, who watched film of all the rookie QBs this week, said his one concern was that Weeden seemed too confident in preseason.

"It was like, 'whoa son -- you don't know what you don't know yet,'" Billick said. "But he knows that now and he certainly has the age (28) and maturity to fight through it. For a younger guy to get savaged the way he did, it might linger a little longer, but I'd be fairly optimistic that he'll bounce back."

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis defended Weeden in his mid-week press conference.

"He didn't play nearly as bad as the criticism he's getting," he said. "He was timely, they get the ball in and out of his hand and he knows where he wants to go with the football. I wish I could count on what happened last week this week."

Added Bengals cornereback Leon Hall: "We'll definitely give him some different looks. Anytime you play a rookie, you want to make things as hard on them as possible."
