"[The quarterback coach's job is] part father-confessor, part psychiatrist, hug him and help them up off the floor," said Childress. "[It's] just propping him back up and getting him back up on the horse. I'd worry about him if he didn't keep shooting. You can't all of a sudden go into the fetal position."
So the team pays players millions to be coddled. Nice to know the mentality of the coaches these days. Whatever happened to tearing into the rear of professional athlete when they made mistakes?
While I agree that Weeds should get a few games in to evaluate his potential, but if he doesn't show any aptitude of running and leading an offense, he should not get the whole year IMO. I understand Billick and respect him as the coach he was, but one of the first things that John Harbaugh did was can Boller and get his QB as soon as possible. So Billick's words on QB evaluation don't hold any water to me.

You save that for Amateur Hour.
I don't see any of what was mentioned as coddling. I see it as quality coaching & leadership. Any dummy can stand there and yell... that doesn't take a brain, nor does it accomplish anything. It takes someone with skill, however, to be whatever that player needs at that moment to help get their mind right and get them back on track. The moment the current game ends, the clock is ticking on the start of the next one.... your job is to make sure the player is ready.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

I just wanted to say that I have to agree with Toad on this one (even though I view him more of a conspiracist as of late, joking ).
Hehehe...Hew, man, joking or otherwise, I do look alot like a conspiracy theorist. When it's the FO's job to lie for various reasons, we all gotta start reading into and around things, and sometimes we look cRaZy (especially when I am ).
And for the record, because there will be at least one Dolt that will say "See, Toad! I told YOU so!" if Weeden comes out and lights up the Bengals, I've said earlier in this thread or another that I'm not going to pass judgment on Weeden after one game. He may be in over his head or he may not be, but it'll take more than one bad game to convince me of that. He just came out and did things that this organization said he wouldn't do, which really makes them look like dopes.
I don't believe in the gamble on Weeds. He was always a developmental guy in my eyes. If he continues to look overmatched then I will call for him to grab some bench so that he isn't ruined mentally.
For those that don't appreciate my sig-line (Dj ) that doesn't say anything different than what I've said about him since before the draft.
Weeden better come out and play a significantly better game or he and the organization are going to be in hot water...

At least you don't have the meter on him yet .
As far as Weeden...he fits in with the rest of the rookies on this team. Give them time..the last thing I want to hear is Colt Colt Colt...as of now that is...

how has Okie State looked after Weeden left?
not much different with a freshman QB...freshman QB gets injured and back up to freshman lights up the scoreboard just like every other Okie State QB
Browns spent a 1st round pick on a 29 yr old system QB

Yep ... they hung 84 points on that powerhouse Savanna State ...... then they lost to Arizona ...... then they whipped up on another powerhouse La. Lafayette, scoring 65. Savannah State has been shut out a combined 139-0 as far as I can tell. Pretty impressive opponent list so far. Let's see how they do when they play real teams. Let's look at other impressive QBs ....... Matt Barkley (and I won't use my nickname for him, even though it would fit today) lost to Stanford again ..... going an impressive 20-41 for 254 yards, and 2 INTs and leading his team to a whopping 14 points. Yeehaw.

Terry Pluto's Talkin' ... about the rush to QB judgment, a Browns coach's impact, a struggling Indians and a returning Cav Published: Saturday, September 15, 2012, 11:50 PM Terry Pluto, The Plain Dealer By Terry Pluto, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- After a busy week in local sports, we're talkin' ... About instant opinions ... We live in the "Have a take, now" world of sports. A "take" is an opinion. And the last thing anyone wants to hear is -- wait. As in, "Can I wait more than four lousy quarters to have a definitive opinion of Brandon Weeden?" I recently heard a talk show about the Colts' decision to take Andrew Luck. Three picks (that's interceptions to some of us) and Indianapolis lost in Luck's first game. Rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill also was a pick-3 in his first start for Miami. But the question of the day was: Did the Colts make a mistake drafting Luck? Should they have kept Peyton Manning instead? Or should they have drafted Robert Griffin III? Have a take ... right now! I understand the need for talk radio to have some fun while filling hours of air time. But Manning vs. Luck vs. RG3? After one week? Is it possible Manning's neck may not hold up all year? Or Luck may play better in Week 2? Or that RG3 may have an average Week 2? People want a "take" on Weeden. OK, the Browns' rookie quarterback was absolutely horrible in his first game with four interceptions, no touchdowns and a 5.1 passer rating. For those who don't worship at the shrine of the passer rating, I'm with Browns offensive coordinator Brad Childress. He said so much goes into that rating, that he really doesn't understand it. I asked Childress what mattered for a quarterback in his system, and he said completing 65 percent of the passes. Weeden was dismal (12-for-35, 34 percent). Childress also talked about "getting the ball downfield." Weeden was 0-for-10 on passes of at least 10 yards. He wants at least four yards on first-down plays, which rarely happened. Obviously, he wants touchdowns. Weeden produced none. And he doesn't want four interceptions. Or the two Weeden fumbles (at least the Browns recovered). Childress talked about the ball being "like a sack of gold, you have to lock it in your pocket." By any measure, Weeden was terrible ... but it was just one game. And it had to be a shock to Weeden, who: • Never threw more than three interceptions in a game in his two years as a starter at Oklahoma State. He threw three picks in three games -- against Iowa State and Louisiana-Lafayette in 2011, and against Oklahoma in 2010. • In his last season, he had 34 TDs to 13 interceptions. In his two years as a starter, only once did he fail to throw a TD pass in a game. • He was sacked only 20 times the previous two years. He's facing NFL pressure for the first time. His quick release and the spread offense made it easy for him to stay away from pressure in college. This also is the first time he's consistently facing defenses that take away his first two options. By any measure, Weeden was terrible . . . but it was just one game. Rookie quarterbacks generally struggle early. That's my take, as boring as it may be. About the Browns ... dick-jauron-coach-2012-cc.jpgView full sizeChuck Crow, The Plain DealerHas any Brown had a better start to the season than defensive coordinator Dick Jauron? 1. If the Browns upset the Bengals, it will because Dick Jauron will find a way to make his young defensive backs as productive as the young linebackers were in the opener. Joe Haden is suspended. Veteran Sheldon Brown is expected to play, but is dealing with a shoulder injury that knocked him out of the opener. The Browns aren't sure how well Brown can deal with the injury. 2. Suddenly, that means cornerbacks Dimitri Patterson, Buster Skrine and Trevin Wade are on the spot. Wade is a seventh-round draft choice who was inactive in the opener. Patterson played 86 of 95 defensive snaps (Haden played them all). Skrine was on the field for 47 snaps. 3. Jauron found a way to take two undrafted linebackers -- Craig Robertson and L.J. Fort -- and combine them with veterans D'Qwell Jackson and Kaluka Maiava to create a defense that chased Michael Vick all over the field. Worth noting is defensive captain Jackson played all 95 snaps at middle linebacker. After that, it was 50 for Robertson, 39 for Maiava and 38 for Fort. So Jauron is not afraid to play an undrafted kid from North Texas (Robertson) over a veteran such as Maiava. 4. There is a tradeoff with veterans Scott Fujita (linebacker) and Brown (cornerback) vs. the younger players. The older guys know where to go, but their legs don't always carry them to the spot. The young guys have brought the defense some desperately-needed speed, even if they don't immediately read every play correctly. 5. Not much was said about Ahtyba Rubin, but the veteran tackle had a monster game with four hits and three hurries on Vick. He also forced a fumble and batted down a pass. The Browns showed real speed from the tackles -- Billy Winn (who had an excellent game), John Hughes and Rubin. Defensive end Jabaal Shread struggled with only one tackle and no real pressure. Sheard led the Browns with 8.5 sacks last season, so the Browns are counting on him. 6. Winn (65 snaps) played more than John Hughes (31) as the two rookies split the tackle next to Rubin (77 snaps). Once again, this shows that Jauron didn't care that Winn was a fifth-round pick while Hughes was a third-rounder. He's playing the guys who are producing. 7. A new trend? After nine interceptions last season, the Browns had four in the opener. Fort will tell you that it should have been five as the rookie dropped a Vick pass in the end zone. All three linebackers -- Jackson, Fort and Robertson -- had an interception. Last season, the linebackers had a total of two interceptions. 8. Weeden's star receiver at Oklahoma State was Justin Blackmon, who caught three passes for 24 yards in his modest opener with Jacksonville. The Jags' top receiver in that game? Local fans will love this: Cecil Shorts of Collinwood and Mount Union. He caught four passes for 74 yards (18.5 average) and a touchdown. He caught only two passes as a rookie last season, playing mostly on special teams. But now he seems to be figuring out the NFL. The Jags waived former Browns 2009 second-rounder and Ohio State star Brian Robiskie last week. Former Brown Peyton Hillis had 16 yards in seven carries for the Chiefs. Evan Moore played one snap for Seattle. web page ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) RG3 faced a Saints D missing a lot of parts and really looked bad all preseason. Tannehill faced the Texans, enough said. Weeden faced the Eagles, who brings pressure from angles Weeden and their secondary makes plays. Luck faced a really weak secondary but a tremendous pass rush and boy he was rushed lol.

You snag candidates after the first round and develop them to replace aging or struggling starters on the current roster. If they are drafted in the first round, everybody (media and fans alike) crown that individual the QB of the future. My point is candidates sit and learn. McCoy was a candidate, Weeden was drafted to be the answer which is what the fuss is all about.
I didn't say he wasn't drafted to be the answer. What Toad is saying is that this FO said he'd be ready week 1 to look like RG3 or something. That isn't the case.
What everyone needs to remember is he was the 4th QB selected, not the first or second. As such, he's not going to be "NFL ready" in his first start.
And when you have already determined that Colt isn't the answer, you move forward just as they have done and let him learn on the fly rather than to continue living in the past.
Toad somehow feels he can support that theory when it comes to HC's and then deny that same theory when it comes to QB's. A complete double standard that holds zero merrit.

That's not what he's saying at all.
I'm not going to put words in his mouth, but I'll say this:
The FO, by their decisions, gave the impression that Weeden was ready to start in the NFL in Week 1. Not be great, or good, but be ready to start an NFL game.
And he wasn't. Not even close.

That's a matter of perception. You precieve that this is what they were saying.
I percieve that they decided that McCoy wasn't the future and Weeden was. So they moved forward with Weeden.
If we can all see that Weeden wasn't ready, do you actually feel it's realistic to think they didn't see that? That's what my preception is based on. I don't think they are blind.
Some seem to think they are......

I agree with you, they felt mangini deserved another look. He got it, failed and was replaced. They felt McCoy deserved a real look. He got it and by most people here failed and was replaced. Now Weeden is being given a look, if he fails he will be replaced as well.
As someone else said hopefully we will have much better things to discuss in about 4 hours. RIP thread, Toad will remember you fondly.
If you need 3 years to be a winner you got here 2 years to early. Get it done Browns.

Nobody can because there wasn't any garbage time in this game.
Weeden did today when he didn't last week. He played a helluva game. Last week he was the goat, this week he played like a vet. That was a promising game today...

He had a much better performance. Looks like something clicked and the game slowed some for him this week. Still making mental errors but that will come. GJ today Weeden. MoMass looked much better too I thought.
And let the hall of fame career of TRich begin today... hopefully.

Tough crowd. 26/37, 70.3% completion, 322 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT, 8.7 yards/pass attempt ......
That's a pretty damn good afternoon playing QB. If that just gets you to "decent" level, then I dunno.

Oh, I do.
I watch the game, eat snacks my wife makes and discuss the game with my grandson while the game is being played. That's three things at the same time.

We also check on stats for our fantasy teams during commercials. For all of these reasons, I never waste my time posting during games.
Besides, how well or poorly do you know players have done until you watch all four quarters? And at least in the snacks my wife makes, there's no crow in the ingrediants.

A much better game by Weeden.
I am very encouraged to see the progress he made this week.......big time progress. I am actually looking forward to seeing if he continues to develop this year.

Oh I'm not one bit sensative. I'm just waiting for you to own up to the fact that Weeden did display many of the things you said that he simply lacked the ability to do. I'm having a great day! Even though our team lost, I expected our secondary to have a very rough outing without Hayden. Our D has shown us their potential in last weeks game. But being young they will have some bumps in the road as they did today. Our O gave us an example that they can move the ball and score more than enough points to win provided our D play at least average. Yet with all of the youth, they will have weeks when they will struggle as well. Over the past two weeks I've seen some very positive signs. I just call it like I see it. That has nothing to do with being sensitive.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

About the most inflammatory I've ever said about Weeden is that in college he threw the ball into huge windows and because of that he wasn't as accurate as advertised.
What I've also said...and I'll be happy to repost it...is that there will be some "I told you so" folks who wanna try and hold me to a cross. To those posters I'd said that while I don't fully believe in Weeden as a long-term guy, I wasn't ready to bury him after one bad game. It would take several games like that before I would call for a benching to keep from ruining him. I've also said repeatedly that he has all the tools an NFL QB should have.
Here it is again so you can read it: Quote:
I wasn't ready to bury him after one game and I'm not ready to anoint him after one, either. I blasted his maturity after last week's pathetic effort because Chilly stated Weeds wouldn't make the same mistake twice, then he turned around and did it. That made the FO look like dopes. I also said he needed to play better.
Now you're going to be waiting a long time before you hear me admit to something I never said. If, by the end of the year, Weeden is completing more than, say, 62% of his passes and isn't doing it at a Colt McCoy-like .035 yards per attempt, I'll admit his accuracy was better than I expected, but until then, there's no crow for me to eat because I wasn't ready to bury him after one game.
And in case you missed it, you bet your ass you're being overly-sensitive. Just settle down and have fun with this.
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***
