Yea,, I think we should blow it up and start over.. we gotta get it right eventually uh ? Lets give Banner and his " up coming" college coach, say like a Davis.. to come in and turn this thing around. Give him a couple years to make us a playoff team.. I'm positive the next group can do this quicker and better than what we have now right ? And if not.. we can just do it again !

same thing? isn't he editor-in-chief?

They make about as much sense sometimes.

Sorry, Mac. Gotta pick on you a bit. You're a big boy. You can take it.

AABF...dude, that's some sarcastic doom-and-gloom there bro, hehe. I don't know that anyone has said Haslam will blow the entire thing up. It's possible, but the worst thing an owner can do is leave people in place if he doesn't like them. Holmgren made that mistake with Mangini and look what that cost us. The cut is so much deeper than just one year of his coaching. He blew numerous very high picks on guys that simply couldn't play. By the time we learned the lesson it was already too late. That's a major contributing factor to the place we're in right now.

Like it or not we have a new owner. When you get a new owner you get new people in place. It's possible that Haslam will keep some or all of the existing folks, but it's far more likely he'll wanna bring in his own people.

To me that's a small sacrifice to make for being able to not have to trust anyone named Lerner. Fourteen years of those guys were nothing short of disastrous. If we gotta take a step back before we can go forward I'm all for it, especially if it finally meant getting the name "Lerner" out of the mix.

Toad the only reason you like Banner so much is this from the articale Mac posted.

Quote:

"Why did Banner always need to lay down the iron fist? Even with the salary cap, the Eagles were never afraid to throw money at big-name free agents.

In fact, until this past offseason, the Eagles rarely re-signed more players than they brought in; that isn't good for a locker room, especially one that has been as close to winning as Philadelphia has. The frustration is so large it could bubble over, which it has at points."

You love the fact he will overpay for FA's and let his own players walk. Thats exactly what Ive seen the Steelers have done for years. They sign more FA players then the players they re-sign?
The Steelers seem to me to draft well and replace the guy's with new younger talent. Adding in a FA here and there when needed. Not bringing in more FA then the players they retain. At least it feels that way to me?

BB is a master at finding aging guys and getting them cheap and somehow getting them to play well for a couple years then letting them go but that also isnt the same as what Banners method's are.

Now I see why him and Heckert probably didnt get along. Tom believes in drafting good players to build a Dynasty and is on record as saying overspending on FA's rarely works out.

Much as you posted, we should have overpaid/signed some aging Guard, who hasnt been offered a contract by any other team because he probably wants to much money so we can sit our young guards, instead of having them develop together with the rest of the young offense. You believe in Banners methods and now I see why you hate the current FO so much.

Yeah lets overpay for a FA and have to cut someone young instead.

Good call Mangini.

MH had no control over the Mangini drafts. He instantly took that responsibilty away from him. You cant hold a man accountable for actions taken before he gets there.

Mangini coaching that 1st year had 0 (zero) affect on the drafts Heckert ran.
This is where its all opinion but I dont think any coach we could have hired if he had fired Mangini would have done better. I think Mike was looking over who wanted. You may consider it a waste year but I see as trying to find the right people to run what your building.

Shurmur is however who Holmgren will be remembered for hiring good or bad because he is that guy Mike found to run his team.

If Shurmur sticks and does well I will not say its because of Has or Banner it was because Mike identified him. If Shurmur is fired then we will have to watch how his career progresses, and the New head coach will be tied to whom ever makes that new hire. Along with all the other hires/firings the could come along next year.

I would like to have Shurmur stay. But It is kinda hard to believe that a new GM is not gonna want to put his own guy as HC. And Shurmur knows that. I know a lot of people are throwing away the season and it just got started.

I look at it like this. We lost by 1 pt to the team many have picked to go to the superbowl out of the NFC with a rookie QB, DT missing, LB's missing, rusty rookie RB, and over a dozen rookies on the team. The AFC north is down this year. Pitt is not Pitt. No line, no running game, and defense showing its age and weaknesses. I really think they will miss the playoffs this year. Bengals questionable as always. Between the two, i think we can get 3 wins. Our defense looks improved, faster, and more aggressive. The skill position players look like they have improved from last year and the talent lvl increased with the new additions.

All in all I think we have a good COMPETITIVE young hungry ball club. We will see if they can turn that into some wins this year.

You are correct. I had the timeline out of sync. I can't hold Holmgren's feet to the fire for allowing Mangini's draft picks, only for allowing Mangini and his program stay.

Then you're saying when Banner gets here he can't allow Shurmur or his program to stay. So we have another dead men walking scenario this season, again.

you need to combine that with this from his other post.

You see to Toad its OK to take a step back, but only to replace the guys (H&H) who he says did that, and set us back, to get it right. Double standard IMHO. Of course that will make it so he would never have to admit that Lerner actually tried to get it right and maybe actually has. Everything he did will have been erased.
To bad too seeing as Toads hoped for step back, may be straight back to the year 1999.

Honest question,

Wouldn't it be pretty bad business etiquette by the Browns to do much speaking on the matter before the sale is even final?

Yup, sure would....

To tell you the truth, if these articles are even close to accurate, I'd rather that he not be associated with the Browns in any fashion

Simply stated, Banner in his role was part of one of the most successful teams in the league over the last decade. If he comes here doing the job he did there, I'm all for it. That blueprint was wildly successful and that's good enough for me. Of course none of that will matter if we bring in the wrong personnel people, but in the microcosm that was his job he was the envy of all of his piers.

He was wildly successful at it pre 2006. Since that time, for some reason Lurie must not think that Banner has kept up with the ever changing salary cap situation.

AS is printed in my earlier article posted here, somewhere between then and now, others have been given those duties in Philly.

The players and fan base in Philly are overwhelmingly glad he's leaving. Now you spin that any way you wish.

Sometimes people are frozen in time and just can't seem to change with the times. We'll see how he does when he gets here, but to say the jury isn't still out on this one is far from accurate.

Baltimore sure wouldn't let Ozzie go but Savage was no problem.

In one breath you said that Philly waqs such a great team. Then in the next breath you make them sound like fools for lettig Banner go. Having your cake and eating it too?

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I don't recall saying that at all. The structures of Mangini and Shurmur couldn't have been any different. The only similarities are that they were both head coaches. Beyond that? Totally different.

My "agenda" isn't being weaved in the dark corners of a dark passage. My "agenda" is that Holmgren probably shouldn't stay. Beyond that? I want Heckert to stay. He's a proven guy. I don't know that Shurmur is a failure. He's been handed a pathetic roster and told to go win. Shurmur and Heckert are old Eagles guys and if Banner were to come in maybe they are all on the same page with the power struggle involving Reid having rocked the boat. I don't really know.

What I do know is that Mangini held all the power here. Lerner gave him that. Then Holmgren was hired. Holmgren butted in from time to time and screwed the pooch, but Heckert had power that Mangini never gave to anyone, and unlike Mangini, Heckert has a track record of success in his position.

So there are differences between removing Holmgren from the equation and removing Mangini from the equation.

Finally, when I say if removing Lerner from the equation may come at the cost of a teardown and I'm ok with that, there is no agenda there. Both Lerner's were abysmal failures as owners. Randy had to go. If we gotta lose a year in order to start over with Haslam, so be it. I'd rather Heckert and many of our coaches stay, but the facts in the NFL are such that when a new owner comes in, there WILL be changes if the team sucks. Unfortunately for us, yeah, we suck. I don't call that an agenda. I call that acceptance.

Joe Banner, the long-time team president of the Philadelphia Eagles who was previously reported to be joining the Browns under new owner Jimmy Haslam, could be officially introduced as soon as the Oct. 15-16 league meeting in Chicago, sources said. Some expect Banner to be named CEO, but regardless of the the title will report directly to Haslam. Haslam has yet to comment on the move, publicly or privately, or convey any plans for changes to current team president Mike Holmgren, sources said.

However, Banner's arrival would most likely spur settlement talks with Holmgren, as their roles would be redundant.

Haslam has made it clear he is not going to make immediate, sweeping changes upon taking over midseason, but sources said an overhaul is possible in the offseason, with everyone under review. Coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert worked for Banner in Philadelphia, but if the winless Browns can't produce some results, widespread change is possible in 2013.

Haslam is very high on former Bucs and Raiders coach Jon Gruden, league sources said, but Gruden was not interested in the job when Shurmur took it in early 2011 and it would not appear he has interest now. The NFL Today's Bill Cowher name will undoubtedly be connected with the job, since Cowher is a former Steelers Super Bowl- winning coach (his tenure did not cross over with Haslam's minority ownership of the Steelers) and Browns assistant and player, but that won't be happening, sources said.

With the prospect of landing any “A list” coach likely to prove difficult, Haslam could ultimately follow the model espoused by the Rooney family for decades, which is targeting bright young assistants for head coaching vacancies and keeping stability in the coaching and front office ranks as those coaches grow and develop in their roles.

To be fair, this report is coming from Jason La Canfora. He works for CBS Sports and is on the set right now with Bill Cowher. It wouldn't be all that hard to find out Cowher's preferences.

Plus, why would we want a 3-4 guy when we have completely blown up our defense to run the 4-3?

Geesh .... if we keep switching back and forth and back and forth we'll never develop anyone worth keeping.

Holmgren's position as President of the Browns and Banner's past experience as President of the Eagles are not the same job or area of expertise.

Mike Holmgren is not a salary cap guru and he is not the lead guy in negotiating player contracts...Banner was the head bean counter for the Eagles, in charge of negotiating player contracts and salary cap issues.

Banner got in trouble in Philly, when he used contract negotiations to help shape the teams 53 man roster, low balling players Andy Reid wanted signed to contract extensions. In Cleveland, Bryan Wiedmeier is the Executive Vice President, Business Operations and as everyone knows, the Browns have not had issues with the salary cap since Holmgren hired Wiedmeier.

An article below about Banner being fired earlier this year...losing a power struggle with Andy Reid, that had gone on for years, and finally came to a head with reports that Reid gave the Philly owner Jeff Lurie a choice...Banner goes or Reid goes.

Philadelphia Eagles: Joe Banner out as Team President Means Andy Reid Won

By
Dave Stoessel
(Analyst) on June 7, 2012
In a shocking announcement, Joe Banner is no longer the president of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Banner is being replaced by chief operating officer Don Smolenski, while Howie Roseman will assume Banner's salary cap duties.

For the longest time, there had been rumors of a power struggle in the front office, most notably between Banner and Andy Reid. And for the most part, it appeared that Banner won many of those struggles since he controlled all things money-related.

This is why, over the years, you often heard players get disgruntled towards the team when it came to contract negotiations, but they would always maintain a respect for Reid.

You even heard it last year with Asante Samuel when he was getting upset about being on the trade market. He made his infamous claim that the "people upstairs" were playing fantasy football with the owner's money.

However, during that same time, he differentiated Reid from the bunch, when he said this:

"Everything has been good with me and Andy. That's my guy, that's who I play for, that's who I continue to play for," said Samuel.

"I go to war for Andy. It is what it is, all the other stuff upstairs."

Samuel's feelings have been shared by most of the players who have played under Reid. This means that, for the most part, the "people upstairs" have had a tremendous amount of say in who stays and who goes.

Furthermore, if you recall, there was a controversial report that came out back in March from Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times. Here is what Farmer reported:

Two NFL insiders, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the topic, said that Philadelphia Coach Andy Reid was ready to walk away from the Eagles if he didn't get more personnel control, and now he has it.
We've seen a flurry of decisive moves by the Eagles in recent weeks, including finally cutting a blockbuster deal with receiver DeSean Jackson; extending two good soldiers, defensive end Trent Cole and right tackle Todd Herremans, outbidding the Ravens to keep guard Evan Mathis; and trading for Pro Bowl linebacker DeMeco Ryans.

In light of the moves the team made this offseason, this report made sense at the time and it makes even more sense now. During the Reid era, how often do you remember the Eagles restructuring players' deals because "they deserved it?"

Brian Westbrook was the only case I remember, and that was almost literally like getting blood from a stone.

It certainly does appear that Reid threw his weight around this offseason and ended up winning the ultimate struggle for power within the front office. If he lost a lot of battles with Banner and/or the "people upstairs," he appears to have won the war...for now.

Banner was never a popular figure in Philadelphia and was viewed as a stingy penny pincher for the most part. However, if you were a businessman in the business of making a profit, Banner was someone you wanted on your side.

He was often seen as shrewd and unwavering in contract negotiations. He was able to pinpoint a value for a player and would rarely budge from there. However, for all his faults and unpopularity, he always had the Eagles in good position in terms of cap space.

And that is important in this day and age because it's hard to compete if you're always cap-strapped.

With that said, I can't say I'm "disappointed" by this move. Banner is not someone I'll miss...at least not initially. If we see the Eagles with cap problems and unable to sign a player we all want, maybe I'll be wishing we still had him.

But, if not having Banner in control means we continue with the philosophy employed this offseason, by all means, see ya Joe!

I don't see the big deal here. Banner sounds like a smart guy that doesn't believe in overspending especially in FA unless your a piece or two away from something special.

Tom Heckert is on record saying that spending big in Fa rarely works out. Heckert worked with Banner for years so perhaps thats why Heckert won't spend big in FA. losing Mike Holmgren is not going to be a big loss for us. I fully expect Heckert to stay as GM. This will allow Heckert to do what he does best which is finding value in the draft.

Next year i do think Heckert and Banner will add a few mid-tier Fa signings along with finding some good value in the draft that should improve the overall state of the team. IF the big IF Shurmur can actually win a few games and not look inept like he has, he may keep his job as well. If not, then we will have a new coach....who knows...we may just give the HC job to Childress and kep Jauron as DC or vice-versa and keep Chilly as OC so we may not lose continuity as much as many believe.

I think Banner will be a fine addition to this ballclub...a Suit with years of expereince as a team President and NFl Executive, a guy who barring a mjor rift will probably keep Heckert and his scouting staff on which will just further help stability.

Holmgren was in over his head as a President, the guy sucked as a GM in Seattle, Ron Wolf made all the picks and personell decisions in Green Bay not Holmgren. Now, I am not taking away anything from Holmgren as a Head coach. The guy is a Hall of Fame Head coach, but he just isn't a good President.

If Banner would have been President, we probably would have RG3 as a Brown....Holmgren's inexperience in top negotiations by trying to be "cute" cost us RG3.....Remember Holmgren saying we offered a better deal then the Redskins did? Then the owner of the Rams came out and stated bluntly that was a faltout lie? Again Holmgren got "cute" and outsmarted himself....he just isn't Presidnet materiel....it happens...but the man is a great coach. It will not be a big loss losing holmgren as i figure Heckert has a pretty good chance of sticking around as he worked under Banner for a longtime in Philly without any major issues....

i think it's funny looking back at these sometimes. even when someone re-posts the same article 10+ times.

Banner said he left the Eagles not because he was battling with Reid but because he wanted a bigger opportunity elsewhere as part of an ownership group.

the timeline for his departure lines up well with Haslam finding out the Browns were for sale and starting to put together his team for that venture.

but, we are supposed to believe media speculation over his word and what directly came to pass?

If you are suggesting that they could peacefully co-exist, I would respectfully disagree. Holmgren isn't going to want to have to share authority with anybody and I believe Banner wants to expand his role... whether he will be any good at it is anybodys guess.

Frankly, at this point I don't care one bit who stays, who goes, who gets the blame, who gets the credit, whether or not we have a logo, cheerleaders, or new uniforms ........ I just want a winning team sometime before I die.

Frankly, at this point I don't care one bit who stays, who goes, who gets the blame, who gets the credit, whether or not we have a logo, cheerleaders, or new uniforms ........ I just want a winning team sometime before I die.

That's about where I'm at too YTown.

It's out of our control anyway and getting all worked up over it wont change what they end up doing ... and I say they, because I'm including Banner in the mix.

Whether or not I will like and I'm able to live with their decisions is another story.

I'm Old and Tiered of Change. Tiered of waiting for a winning franchise.

If I was a new Browns Fan (since 99), then I probably wouldn't still be following the Browns to be perfectly honest. With that said I'm not and I can't change my colors no more than a leopard can change their spots.

How long I continue to wear my colors is entirely up to them and the direction they take from here on out.

I don't see the big deal here. Banner sounds like a smart guy that doesn't believe in overspending especially in FA unless your a piece or two away from something special.

Banner is a bean counter...not a personnel type guy. Matter of fact, Banner was the most hated man in the Eagles organization...hated by the Eagle players.

WHY?....because he was a penny pincher on contracts and tried to use his authority over player contracts to shape the Eagle roster and to go over Andy Reid.

Andy Reid and Banner did not get along...Banner had an agenda to gain more power within the Eagles organization.

Just "this year" Andy Reid told the owner, either Banner goes, or I goes..one of us is going to leave the Eagles.

The owner, Jeff Lurie chose to keep Andy Reid and fire his best friend...

TO EVERYONE...why do you believe Banner's best friend fired him?

...and those of you who do not believe Banner was fired...type in "Joe Banner fired" in your search engine and read the articles...I will even make it easier for you...here.. web page

Again, Joe Banner's area of expertise is "bean counting"...Holmgren hired Bryan Wiedmeier, ExecVP, Business Operations to handle that job for the Browns...that is the job Banner is "qualified" to do...the job he did in Philly since Lurie bought the Eagles and hired Banner to take care of the money issues.

The guy who replaced Banner in Philly is Don Smolenski...he holds the same title Banner held, President...from his bio...Smolenski directs the club’s business and strategic efforts, including sales, marketing, communications and operations. He is known for his collaborative, easygoing style, financial acumen and long-term view and for playing a key role in significant projects from the construction of Lincoln Financial Field to the club’s internationally recognized environmental and philanthropic programs.

Smolenski joined the Eagles in 1998 as the club’s Chief Financial Officer and was later promoted to Senior Vice President/Chief Financial Officer. In 2010, he was named the club’s Chief Operating Officer.

Also, Banner has a reputation of someone who is hard to get along with...Andy Reid for example...the players hate him, because he has a reputation of low balling players in contract negotiations.

Those of you who believe (if hired to replace Holmgren) Banner's reputation will not affect free agent signings and or coaching hires...you are not being honest.

I invite everyone to do some homework about the guy...I have !

One last thing...Banner obviously left the Eagles a very wealthy man and was determined to never be fired again. He sought out a group he could be part of to buy a team...in essence, buying himself a position he could not be fired from.

IMO, Banner doesn't give a ratsass about the Cleveland Browns...he is in this for himself and would try to move the Browns to Los Angeles in a heartbeat, if it made him look good.

I view Banner as trouble...nothing more. We already have someone who does what Banner did while with Philly...count beans.

Pros and Cons of Joe Banner's Reported Interest to Buy Buffalo Bills
June 7, 2012

Buffalo Bills fans should familiarize themselves with Joe Banner.
The 59-year-old is now the former Philadelphia Eagles team president after he stepped down from his position this afternoon.
That news itself doesn't concern the Bills whatsoever, but his future endeavors certainly do.
In a statement obtained by CBSSports.com, Banner discussed what his next move is within the football world:
"I plan to pursue a major new opportunity within the sports field — one that will enable me to apply all that I have learned as the Eagles president."
ESPN's Sal Paolantonio (via ProFootballTalk.com) shed more light on Banner's plans:
...................................................
Banner is interested in joining an ownership group that hopes to buy an NFL team. He said that he is “open to L.A. I don’t want to single them out, but that’s something I think I can do – set up a franchise, help build a stadium, hire a coach, hire good people to build a a winning organization."
.......................................................

To add even more specificity to the report, Philadelphia sports radio personality and Eagles sideline reporter Howard Eskin tweeted the following regarding the teams in which Banner is interested:
......................................................
Now hear #Eagles Ex Pres Joe Banner interested in getting group together to buy Buff Bills.. Hear Cleveland and St louis may also be 4 sale
........................................................

Now I've got the attention of the Bills faithful.

Is this good news? Bad news? Or meaningless news? (We must remember that the team is still owned by soon to be 94-year-old Ralph Wilson Jr., and there has been absolutely no indication that he's looking to put the team he founded up for sale.)

Let's list the pros and cons.

Pros

Banner's Past with Eagles

Due to Ralph Wilson Jr.'s age, the Bills are forced to be worried about their short-term future in Western New York.

With no succession plan in place to keep the team in Buffalo, Bills fans have a somewhat haunting notion that their team will go up for auction and be sold to the highest bidder, bringing Los Angeles into consideration.

In his talk with Mike Florio on PFT Live, Banner said his interest in a certain club will be "driven by their stadium situation," and that the ownership group he's trying to assemble is not against moving a team to LA.

While the last piece of that sentence could haunt some Bills fans, remember what Banner did with the Eagles.

He was the man behind the construction of Lincoln Financial Stadium and was the financial mastermind during the team's rise to prominence in the early- to-mid 2000s.

The Bills are playing in one of the oldest and out-of-date stadiums in football, but as the Buffalo News reported earlier this spring, the team wants to make upgrades that could cost up to $200 million. The impending renovations could be intriguing to Banner as a starting off point in what he'd deem a rebuilding process of the organization.

Banner's Salary Cap Mastery

After years of coming off as a cheap franchise who wasn't willing to pay their better players, the Bills finally broke the bank in the 2011 offseason with their 100-million dollar signing of defensive end Mario Williams. That followed multi-year extensions to the club's core players like Ryan Fitzpatrick, Kyle Williams and Steve Johnson.

While CFO Jeff Littman and GM Buddy Nix have done a wonderful job keeping the Bills under the salary cap, Banner is renowned as a salary cap guru, a guy proficient in structuring contracts to keep good players around and sign high-profile free agents. He'd be welcomed by fans and coaches who'd like the front office to give a concerted effort to remain competitive every year by re-signing guys and inking players on the market.

Cons

Los Angeles Possibility

The "cons" are quite obvious. Banner has no connection to Buffalo or Western New York and openly stated he's no against moving a team to Hollywood.

Bills fans are aware that legendary quarterback Jim Kelly, has "people in line" to potentially purchase the team when they are put on the open market, a group that certainly would have no intention to move the team from the Western New York area.

The former Eagles president would like serve as competition to Jim Kelly and his investors. Banner will stand to make the most revenue possible, which probably means the club would move from Buffalo or any surrounding region.

The Stadium

The report of major renovations to Ralph Wilson Jr. stadium could be enticing to Banner, or the fact that the Bills don't seem willing to construct a brand new, state of the art facility could make him lean toward a move if he purchased the team.

The stadium opened in 1973 and its lease with Erie County expires in 2013, although there have been preliminary talks to extend the lease.

Banner could see the somewhat dilapidated facility as a second coming of Veterans Stadium. While history shows he'd try to build a new stadium with the metropolitan region of Buffalo, if he's unable to gather enough public or state funding for the new project, he could relocate.

This is engaging news for Bills fans, but remember, the team is still owned by Ralph Wilson Jr. As of right now, they aren't for sale and aren't going anywhere

Sure makes it sound like the Browns aren't the only ones (that's even if we really are) fishing in the Banner Pond.

The one to watch is Haslam, not Banner. Banner is a suit, a corporate killer type. He'll do what he's paid to do and probably do it well. You don't work for a guy like Haslam for very long if you don't do what he wants.

Haslam apparently knows football. He's going to tell Banner what he wants and then Banner gets to either execute on the plan or explain why he failed. I have no doubt from watching the few interviews Haslam has done that he plans on being an active owner. And that is what makes Holmgren expendable.

The question is does Haslam think he knows more about football than Mike Holmgren. I kind of doubt it. Guys like Haslam really like to know it all and if they don't they'll latch onto someone who can keep them from looking stupid. So I see him keeping Holmgren around for a year or so but as more of a consigliere than anything. And I think Holmgren could do quite well in that role as opposed to what he's doing now as long as he accepts the fact that the boss is calling the shots.

And does anyone see a theme surrounding some of the things going on in Berea for the last year, even before the sale was announced? Heckert, Shurmur, the Philly connection with Banner? Maybe Holmgren has been in on this thing longer than he's letting on. I think I'll spend some time pondering that time line and see if it is just a Budweiser dream or maybe something more.

If we are to believe what we're told, the team became available sometime in April and Haslam was contacted by the league office at some point after that, asking if he'd be interested and when he heard it was the Browns, he was on the next plane to Cleveland and from there, they consummated a deal.

Again, if you believe what we are told.

But I'm kinda with you, this is the kinda thing that an owner who hires a president would tell him and then say look, do this for me and I'll make sure you get the golden parachute at the end..

Holmgren may have known this was coming from day one. I suspect he did because when you've been around the league for as long as Holmgren, there aren't any secrets anymore.. I'm fairly positive he wasn't surprised by this at all. The timing perhaps,, maybe he expected it to take place after this season or next. But not the actual event itself.

Question: On why fans should be optimistic that he is the guy who will turn the Browns around:

Haslam: “I hate to refer back to our business track record, but that’s all I know to refer back to. If you look at our main company, Pilot Flying J, it’s been in business for 53 years. We have a very, very senior group of individuals, a very set culture and candidly that’s how we plan on doing it here. We’re going to devote whatever time necessary it takes to get things right here in Cleveland and I believe they’re on the right path now. We’re going to take whatever steps necessary to bring winning football back to Cleveland.”

He uses his experience in business, not football as to why we should be optimistic

Question: On being a minority owner of the Steelers and what he can take away from that organization and their success:

Haslam: “Let me say this, even though I understand the rivalry between Pittsburgh and Cleveland, I get it and our main goal is to return that to a real rivalry. I’ll say this, the Rooney’s are everything you have ever heard and read that they are. They are class people, they do things right. I take no credit for the four years that we were there, but two Super Bowls, won one, playoffs three years and they do things the right way. They have the Steeler way of doing things. I think we will now have the Browns way of doing things. They build through the draft and those are the things that I learned there.

Doesn't sound to me like he thinks he knows much at all about the inner workings of a team or about personnel decisions.

Question: On how active he will be in terms of football decisions:

Haslam: “I think it will be a learning curve. I mean you’ve got a guy that won a Super Bowl over there that’s going to be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, that’s a legend. I’ll be honest, there’s a fan part of me too. Last night I was looking forward to dinner to meet Mike, but he’s also a guy I’ve thought a lot of so we’re going to ask a lot of questions and learn it first. I’m a believer in collective wisdom and if you have five smart people sitting around the table, it’s better than four, but we’re going to take some time to get up to speed before we get real involved in any football decisions. It probably comes a little quicker on the business side for us.”

I don't know exactly what you used to base your opinion on in your comment above, but I can't see where you based it on anything Haslam indicated.

I keep that press confrence on my favorites list.

It seems the longer time passes since that press confrence, the more people seem to forget what he did and did not say.

And so it begins... Fire Holmgren now... then, either this offseason or next Heckert, Shurmur (2013) and crew are gone. Then, the new staff will come in... give Weeden/McCoy one year for (2014) evaluation purposes. Then, the new brass will decide neither QB is the answer. The new QB will be drafted (2015). Then, we will be told that it is a 2 to 3 year process and that it is not fair to judge the rookie.

With the current reset/restart scenario... projecting 2017 as the "we have a chance" season.

Actually if you take a couple of the answers and put them together, he uses his business model and his time with the Steelers to prove that he is a man who values continuity and a stable business environment.

Why? Because he doesn't want to come out and take credit for the Steelers success? He may not have caused it, but he watched it and has a firm understanding of how they did it. And I'm not just talking about drafting and Xs and Os, I'm talking about how you build the inside of an organization, how you treat people, etc.

Would you feel better if he came out and said, "I take most of the credit for building the Steelers into what they are?" No, he would be called arrogant and unrealistic.

So the fact that he values Holmgrens opinion and wants to develop a much better understanding of his vision and where he is trying to go and how he is trying to get there, that is an implied admission that he doesn't know anything about football?

I will say this, I personally don't care if the guy knows football. I bet neither the Rooneys nor Robert Kraft sit in their box on Sundays going, "Hey look, the defense is in a shallow cover 2, I hope the offense runs a couple short outs and sends the tight end down the seam to expose the safeties." I also bet that neither of them sits there watching film saying, "You know, this OG out of Arkansas uses his hands much better than the guy from Wisconsin but the guy from Wisconsin has better push and a better ability to get to the second level.

They don't do that (and we don't want an owner that does that) and they are 2 of the most successful organizations in recent memory... they hire people to do that. If Haslam hires the right people (or trusts that we already have the right people and retains them) ... and let's them do what they do, then he will be a successful owner.
