If the team won games, it'd be packed into January.
Attendance at end of season has more to do with wins, losses, and holidays than it does temperature.
Oh people would go, that's not his point... his point is that they would be more comfortable and have a better time and enjoy the game more if it was indoors than if it was -5 with a 25 mph wind....... and they would.
It's one of those things that the diehards would complain about as it was being proposed and built... until it was done. I'd like to go up to a guy and his wife at a late December game that could mean we were going to playoffs or not, who are watching the game with their jerseys on and a hot dog in their hand and a cold beer in the cup holder and and cheering like mad... then ask them if they would rather be outside.... the vast majority will find it be a much more pleasant experience if its inside..
And as already has been mentioned, where does this perception that we have some kind of cold weather advantage come from?
For me it's not about a cold weather advantage. It's about football being played in Cleveland in the dirt and weather. Football is an outdoor game in Cleveland. It's part of our tradition.

It would seem that is a premature statement and conclusion to Jimmy Haslam at the moment.

W/hy is it that some people hate the new stadium? I was too young to remember the old stadium but I don't get why some people hate the new stadium.
It's a 'sterile' feeling, cookie cutter, suburban tract home design. Compared to the old gritty, Muni. The Muni was attrocious but it had a rust belt charm. The new stadium brings none of that feel of Cleveland in its design.
LOL... I guess that is a matter of taste (or lack thereof)
I went to a LOT of games at The Muni and it was an absolute dump. I have loads of great memories of attending games there, but I always hated the building itself. ::shrug:: Personally, I really like the new stadium.
Now, if we could just build a winner to play in it...

Because of the memories they associate with the old stadium. The site lines were horrible, the bathrooms were horrible, the concessions were horrible.... and the Browns have never won consistently in the new stadium...

The design was not Cleveland Browns. I think someone from queer eye was the architect for the stadium. It never felt like cleveland browns stadium.

Ya know... when the team first left and people were debating on stadium designs, I was COMPLETELY against the idea of a dome.
I'm now completely in the boat that believes I was a fool. A dome on the stadium would be GREAT! For football, for the city, for the venue.

I've attended games at both. Again the Muni was an atrocious dump. But it matched the grit of the city. The new stadium...meh. It's clean. That's about the most interesting thing I can say about it. It's a strip mall of a stadium. JMHO.

Muni was a dump it smelled like Ft Benning outhouse in late july. Didnt like it at all. If u have been to these other stadiums, I think you can understand the difference. CBS is like caviar when people would be happy with potted meat lol

I wouldn't mind a dome in Cleveland.
I remember going to the Rams Monday Night Game back in the days of the Holcomb/Couch debate. It was bitterly, brutally cold in the upper deck. I'm fairly hardy .... and I dressed really warmly ..... but it was still just awful. I really couldn't enjoy the game because it was so damned cold. It wasn't super cold, but that wind whipping around the upper deck was like a real whip, cracking against any exposed skin, and cutting right through the layers of clothes I had on.
I would have preferred a dome on that night, that's for sure.

Seven hotdogs and four beers + dome, if not now, it will then. A dome? We have DAWSON! It would be a killer for his skills.

I was always against a dome, but since I dropped my season tix 3 years ago I've been to Ford Field twice and have totally changed course. Maybe it was just Ford Field itself, but on a December afternoon, drinking cold beer (ie, not frozen) in a jersey and being comfortable is FAR more enjoyable. In fact, quite honestly, IMO everything about Ford Field is better then at CBS with the exception of the tailgating, as there really isn't any in with the setup.

If he is able to find someone to build a dome onto the stadium, maybe he can have them stick some big iron poles in various spots, so the old schoolers can sit behind them and feel like its the good ol' days again instead of complaining about how there's a dome on the stadium.

The idea of a dome has been floated before. Frankly, it is a great idea except for one thing....The cost.
It's just a guess on my part but I have to believe that at this point it would cost $300 to $500 million to do it properly. Just who would pay for that is anyone's guess but I gotta believe it wouldn't be Jimmy Haslam.
That leaves the city of Cleveland taxpayers and ticket holders. I just don't see that happening in this economic climate.
Honestly, only a masochist actually loves freezing their butts off at a football game. A brisk October breeze, sure. 15 degrees with horizontal snow in December - not so much.

I think that is way high Otto.....I am thinking 100-130 mil.
It sounds expensive, but 1 SuperBowl would cover that for the city.
I am all for a dome. A nice afternoon, keep it open. Rain or something under 50, close the lid.
Owners lose money with no shows due to weather. You were at the SD game.....we had a beer or three before the game....there were a lot of no shows for that game.
I don't claim to know the number, but there has to be a average dollar amount spent for a fan once inside the stadium...$15?? $25??? I don't know, but a no show impacts the gross sale amount for that game.
I am all for a dome and have said so since we first talked about building this stadium.
It doesn't make sense for the city to not have a domed stadium.

I have no problem with a dome and filling in the open spots in the endzone areas of the stadium would really help a great deal. The open sports just looked so tacky and it does keep the noise in the stadium down. Hey I love snow games but there is only 2 places to enjoy a snow game that is on the field playing where u can keep warm by moving around or sitting at home in your living room. Now since they wouldnt let me on the field to play, I will stick with the recliner .

You sure about that? The roof fairings for the stadium appeared to be present in the event that they wanted to add a roof for some reason.

Eh, I'm mixed about it. I like rain and snow games. I just don't want to lose the uniqueness of frozen beer slushies, ridiculous cross winds, and the challenge of playing in our stadium. Quote:

I think the cost of adding a dome now would be gained back in the future with more events that would be held there, especially the Super Bowl. I would love a retractable dome on the stadium. Open for those nice sunny, Sunday games and closed for games held in inclement weather.

For me, it was a visit to the SuperDome to watch us spank the Saints. I am still in awe over how stinking LOUD that place is.

You know what? I'm not a huge fan of being outside in the freezing cold for hours and hours, but two of the most fun games I've been to in recent memory were the Great Buffalo Snow Bowl of Aught Seven and the Thursday nighter against Pittsburgh a couple seasons ago. Had a blast at those games (probably mostly because they won). And I've said it before, but I'll sit through ten freezing games before I sit through another game in the pouring rain.

I've had season tickets for 10 years with my dad and I would love a dome. Don't have to worry about freezing your ass off and if you think Browns stadium is loud now, if we get a winning team and are in a dome its gonna be absolutely ridiculous.

Hmmph. Everyone that tailgates in December would have to take off their outdoor heavy stuff before they walked over to the stadium. That would just be weird.

You've been there. There is no way to dome the stadium. Retracting roof is the only thing they could do and it would not keep the cold out. If they want a dome now and Im serious they would build a new stadium and it would not be where it is now.

Not necessarily - play somewhere else for two or three years, Columbus as an example, and build the thing right like they should have done for 1999. And if they did move the location I'd be fine with it.

I hate the idea of a roof. Football is supposed to be played outside, on grass. Just my opinion (obviously).
The stadium is already lame due to to many rules, people who should stay at home, and fun fans being at bars or home. A roof would let them drink tea, and have family time. Yipee.

Just chiming in here now... a dome are yall kidding?! All for a dome?! Have we all gone soft?!?! Football is an outdoor game. When youre young and it snows outside whats the first thing you did? Gather your friends and play snow football. What game have most of the fans in Cleveland/Buffalo been to in the last 12 years had the best time? The snow bowl against Buffalo! Snow and cold are what football is all about. Red Right 88 was amazing (despite the loss part). The ice bowl was amazing. the Packers NFC Championship loss to the Giants was amazing. The Thanksgiving Leon Lett oops was amazing. Weather is the best part of football. those that show and go, for the most part always have an amazing time. The elements are a part of northern football. Zygi Wylf wants to build an outdoor stadium for the Vikings...The Lions, Rams, Falcons, etc all have lame stadiums...Lucas Oil Field? Lame...Ill give credit to the Superdome cuz that stadium has character, but the rest? cmon....The Metrodome was sweet, but i think only cuz of Barry Sanders... Ive lived in upstate new york forever and have been to several Bills games in terrible weather as a kid, and have been to a few Cleveland games in bad weather and theyre always fun...You cant take weather out of Cleveland football...ever. Please no dome. Please...and for the record, if it ever is too cold to go to a game and you have seasons, and dont want to go...sell me your tickets, Ill be there in a heartbeat ready to tailgate at 7-8am and get it goin! Love weather.

its funny like that, we get worked up for games, we dress for games, and we enjoy the games because we like the raw element of football itself. Its meant to be played by men in all elements and nasty weather. Why because its supposed to be a nasty game. Of course the Wife/GF wants a date and thus perfect conditions. Well that is not football. I remember that Buffalo game and there was a girl there probably late teens maybe early 20's and she had on sneakers that of course were soaked. I told her she should go home because she was not ready for 4 hours plus of freezing weather and snow. This was still waiting to get inside the staduim.
Now Im older and dont like the bad weather as much but TBH if I cant sit at game in bad weather Im not going to drive there either so who cares, I wont be there either way. Good to see the young carry the torch to learning what real football is about as well.

I would be very happy with a dome. Since the league is moving to a passing league, it makes sense to have a stadium that we can use that takes advantage of our passing attack (Assuming we ever develop a consistent one). Add to that, I'd much rather be nice and comfortable than freezing my butt off in the stands. You can also have concerts and other huge events in bad weather there and it seems like a good move.

I've been in construction for 20 years and it's possible.. .heck all things are possible if you have enough money.
The biggest problems, as I see it, are that the roof is going to be heavy so attaching it to the existing structure might require beefing up the structure all the way to the ground, not to mention the type of roof required would create lateral loads not accounted for in the existing structure. That would require work.
The other option is to build another structure that basically covers the the existing stadium... that would probably be cheaper but it would be hard to make that look decent.
I'm thinking you could do it for $200 million, but that probably doesn't cover a retractable roof. Retractable would drive the price up considerably.

Here's a funny stat about domes in cold weather area's...for hosting the Super bowl.
The Silver Dome...Detroit Mich... 1982 San Fran & the Bengals...Cinnci fans are snow weathered fans.. and it's cold in San Fran..
Metro Dome.Minneapolis Minn... 1992..Washington and Buffalo....Cold weather fans...
Lucas oil Stadium... Indianapolis Ind...2011.. Giants and Patriots...cold weather fans..
And only once has those places held the Super Bowl...The rest have been warm weather areas...Odds are if a roof goes up in Cleveland...It may host a Super bowl..but it may only be one time...
The NFL appears to believe that fans want to do more than visit a dome on their trip to a Super Bowl game...Having a Casino may help in Cleveland. Not sure how much thou.
Haslam would be better off waiting for TV revenues to help pay for the roof...
I don't really care either way...Just want to see a winning team ... warm or cold weather...
