CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Indians today announced Manny Acta will not return as manager in 2013. Sandy Alomar has been named interim manager.

A news conference is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.

Manny Acta compiled a record of 214-266 (.446) over his three seasons.

"The Cleveland Indians would like to thank Manny Acta for everything he has done for the organization in his three seasons as our Manager," said Cleveland Indians Executive Vice President and General Manager Chris Antonetti. "Managerial changes are never easy or taken lightly, but as we approached the end of the season and turned our attention to assessing the year, we determined a change was necessary."

The club has named Sandy Alomar as Interim Manager for the final six games of the 2012 campaign. Alomar, 46, has been a member of the Cleveland Indians Major League coaching staff since 2010, serving as Bench Coach in 2011.

The rest of the coaching staff will remain intact through the end of the season.

It's about time. I'm sick and tired of watching him squander all of our talent.

He was probably due a bonus if he coached the last game of the year?

Evidently not.

I guess that Sandy gets 6 games to show what he can do.

Meh, Miami, Boston (horrible) and Detroit (May miss playoffs) are showing just the ability to spend cash on people does not a winner make.

We have a system that lets us be good in stretches. Unless someone with unlimated pockets comes around and can make SMART decisions with the money, then whats the point?

and you missed the best example: Anaheim

How can you miss the playoffs when you have Wilson/Weaver/Greinke/Haren/Santana?

And have Pujols/Trout/Trumbo/Hunter/Aybar all as '+' hitters. And are a good defensive club who do well on the basepaths?

I wanted Sandy as the manager a while back, so this is good. I hope they dust off the interim tag soon.

As for the Indians, we bag on them a lot, but they've actually provided a lot of competitive Cleveland sports games since 1994 (the Cavs had 5+ very good years too). The Browns.....made the playoffs once (barely) and then flamed out in a embarrassing way.

Might I add, and some already know this, if we lose tonight it will be 10 straight. Yup.

I'd bet the Indians and Cavs both make the playoffs way before the Browns do. That bites.

Oh well. I'll be watching tonight.

Now what needs to happen? Get the Dolans to sell the team, Selig to step down, get rid of Wahoo and introduce a NFL/NHL style salary cap in the league.

Well, the Dolans won't sell until the value of the Indians is a lot higher than when they bought the club. I haven't checked that figure recently, but I guess it's not much higher than the purchase price (figuring the Tribe was at the peak when they were sold and since the economy and team have nosedived). I wouldn't hold your breath on a sale.

Selig is stepping down....in two years from what I remember (end of the 2014 season).

I don't like Wahoo....and I think the owners don't either, but they won't won't ever phase him out completely (probably because they don't want to appear to be forced by the whackjobs). I think Chief will slowly be less and less prominent.

I don't think there will ever be a salary cap in MLB, ever. I don't think one is needed either.

the franchise value should go up quite a bit by next spring. just based on the valuations of other sport franchises, I would expect it to go over $400mil for the first time (it was at $360mil last spring and the Dolans bought for ~$330).

not that it matters. they aren't selling, the last CBA showed how much the owners will push for a cap (not at all) and the big markets will continue to drive MLB (and give "just enough" in revenue sharing to shut up the small market owners).

MLB is going to get much worse with a bigger divide. I'd say "before it gets better" but some owners would have to care enough for that part to happen.

My assumption is that the FO told him he wasn't going to be back and he told the FO to find someone else to finish the year. Otherwise it just doesn't make any sense.

Unless there were bonuses involved in him managing a whole season.

Not like the Indians FO would do things to save money...

What's odd, they just took 2 out of 3 against the White Sox (knocking them out of first). Although, maybe they were mad about that.

But it's also a day where the Indians don't play. That might have been the reason.

Who knows.

I would be shocked to see anyone other than Sandy as the manager in April 2013.

Love the Alomar promotion. Hope it isn't just an interim appointment.

I would love Nagy or Orel Herschizer (sp) as our pitching coach.

Think Thome retires after this season and comes back as our hitting coach???

Now it's time to find a 1B, 3B, LF, and four starting pitchers.

I like Alomar, but would like a manager with experience. I hope they talk to Francona, though I can't see him taking a job here. For pitching coach, I'd love to see them lure Leo Mazzone out of the radio booth. I read on Wiki that he reduced the ERA's of pitching staffs he went to work for by .64 runs, and that the ERA's of teams he left increased by .74 runs.

I love Sandy, wont mind him getting the job but, getting someone with managerial experiance also means getting a manager who has been fired at one point, so new isnt always bad....

As much as I rooted for Hafner, I'm glad we're FINALLY done with him (although, they'll probably sign him to a Sizemore-like 1-yr deal hoping he stops being who he is, which he won't).

I'm still steamed over that Sizemore deal from this year. EVERYONE on the planet knew he'd spend more time in the trainers room than on the field.

at least Hafner is productive when he plays. he was our 2nd best hitter behind Choo this year when he played (though obviously, he didn't play enough games).

Sizemore not only cannot stay healthy but was garbage in the time he was healthy.

I hope we don't waste the $18mil coming off the books from those 2 on whoever ends up being the new Kerry Woods

2-0 under Alomar. Projecting out if Sandy had been manager all season we would 157-0 right now!
